‘Pachinko’ earns universal praise from critics on the way to the Emmys

Pachinko,” the new Apple TV+ drama series about a Korean immigrant family that spans generations, is earning widespread love from critics. The epic saga comes from the Min Jin Lee novel of the same name and centers on Sunja, who grows up in Japanese-occupied Korea, tracking her life through old age, as well as her family’s lives. Academy Award winner Yuh-Jung Youn stars as the older version of Sunja, in her first onscreen role since winning Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” The raves for Youn’s performance and the series as a whole might just make “Pachinko” the next Apple project to score with awards voters.

Over 20 TV critics on Rotten Tomatoes have voiced their enthusiasm for “Pachinko,” adding up to a 100% fresh rating. The praise for the family drama is glowing even beyond the typical reviews for a new series, using such words as “miraculous,” “timeless” and “the most impressive series yet on any streamer.” One review even claims that “Pachinko” is “dangerously close to a masterpiece.” Critics praise the series’ ability to weave together the various narrative threads from Sunja’s early life to her twilight years, on top of its commentary on lineage and the changing political landscape.

Youn is also earning a slew of positive mentions for her nuanced performance as older Sunja, who carries the weight of her past experiences. She is expected to contend in Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Emmys, currently placing 12th in our latest Gold Derby odds for a nomination. The series itself has climbed its way up to 16th for Best Drama Series as of the week of its premiere. Other cast members, including Korean superstar Lee Min-Ho and past Emmy nominee Jimmi Simpson, are also among outside contenders, for their performances as Koh Hansu and Tom Andrews, respectively.

If “Pachinko” takes off with audiences following this critical success, it will be the latest in a growing collection of awards players for Apple. The still-relatively-new streamer broke through at the Emmys with “The Morning Show” and found even greater success with “Ted Lasso,” which has now won top prizes at the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards. They also proved their success in the Oscar race this season with “CODA,” landing three Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. We’re still months away from Emmy nominations, but it’s possible that with “Pachinko,” they may have struck gold yet again.

Pachinko Review: Lee Min Ho's Web Series On Apple TV+ Impresses Critics Across The World
By Sanyukta Thakare | Updated: Saturday, March 26, 2022, 14:21 [IST]

Lee Min Ho, Minha Kim, Youn Yuh Jung-starrer K-drama Pachinko was recently released on Apple TV+ for the global audience. With the first three episodes, the show has already impressed fans as well as critics across the world.

    xpachinko-1648279883.jpg.pagespeed.ic.pK

Directed by Kogonada and Justin Chon, Pachinko takes place across Japan occupied South Korea from 1910 to Japan in 1989. Following one Korean family through the generations, the show begins with Sunja, the prized daughter of a poor yet proud family. Her unplanned pregnancy threatens to bring shame to the family. However, after being deserted by her lover, Sunja is saved by a young tubercular minister who marries her and brings her to Japan.

The show has been praised for its cinematography as well as the performances by the leading stars Lee Min Ho, Minha Kim, Youn Yuh Jung and others. The eight-part series is based on the 2017 bestseller written by Min Jin Lee. NYTimes' Mike Hale said "Pachinko the TV series has a thoroughly contemporary sensibility, and it works overtime to ingratiate itself with all possible viewers." He also talked about Hollywoodization of the project, however, he said, "But beneath its shine and its likability, Pachinko is pretty ordinary - a lot of hard work has gone into making something easily digestible."

Meanwhile, Sneha Biswas of TOI praised the show and said the makers used Pachinko (the arcade game) as a delightful "metaphor to explore the hopes and dreams of a woman, Sunja and her Korean immigrant family." She added, "Each character brings their best to the story with their honest shades of grey. Lee Min Ho deserves a special mention for shedding his boy-next-door appeal and stepping into the shoes of an anti-hero character." Daniel D'Addario of Variety said, both directors Kogonada and Justin Chon have developed a "crystalline distinction between timelines and worlds," and added "Pachinko does not, finally, cohere. One yearns for the show that let its key moments sing without the at-times forced collisions between eras, ones that can keep viewers feeling both on the hook and in the dark."

As expected, LMH is killing it!

It will be hard to wait a week for each new episode, and then wait years for the following seasons. :o

I'm especially looking forward to episode 7, the Hansu episode.

(It seems that they have made Hansu a few years younger in this adaptation.)

I didn't read the book, but after watched 3 episodes last night, I didn't think Hansu is a villain. Sunja was really falling in love with him, and the peddler in fish market praised his prices were fair and reasonable. He got mad only to maintain the order and save Sunja. Except he could not give Sunja a marriage, he's not bad.  :P

I'll watch 3 episodes again tonight, can't waiting for ep. 7.

[theqoo] THE GOOD THING ABOUT HAVING LEE MINHO IN PACHINKO

    bypannchoa March 24, 2022
He's a Hallyu star so by nature, all the international Lee Minho will be watching Pachinko
    +
His fans are raising funds to promote Pachinko in their own countries

    Argentina
    AVvXsEiS70rkrDaN156YH7xG9L-NdU2J7UitnvDh

    Chile
    AVvXsEhNzcj123Q9C-jojJEW4SMwHNCD5nxMpHc9

And there are more than these

(T/N: Themes in Pachinko include racism, stereotypes, and power, particularly in the context of the experiences of Koreans in Japan during World War II.)

    original post: here

    1. Cool

    2. That's how you use an actor's influence. There's no distortion, no fabrication... he has a good influence and his actions and thinking is cool too

    3. He's cool, I hope the drama hits big!!!

    4. I like Lee Minho

    5. Lee Minho has always been super famous but I didn't know that he was this famous

    6. He's likable..

    7. He even auditioned for the role by himself. So cool. This is what I call a positive influence

    8. Seeing this makes me like Lee Minho more

    9. I didn't know much about Lee Minho either but he's the top Hallyu star. He's super popular in Japan too but seeing how he pushes himself to do what a Korean man should do despite of his popularity in Japan is cool. He's doing the right thing even though a lot of people wouldn't have the balls to do it..

    10. He's the actor who has the most fans overseas so seeing him picking up this work is seriously impressive

    11. It's obvious that he's gonna get bullied in Japan but seeing how he auditioned for this role by himself is seriously cool

    12. I like his positive influence so much, Lee Minho actor-nim is cool!!

    13. He's impressive. Pachinko, hit big

    14. I like that Lee Minho is good at acting

    15. The fact that he read the original novel and decided to play this role is impressive. He's cool but his role is closer to that of a villain in the story.... Lee Minho is impressive

Pachinko boss Soo Hugh explains how Lee Min-ho won the role of Hansu

"He just has a spiritual connection with the camera."

    22/03/2022

Pachinko showrunner Soo Hugh has opened up to Digital Spy about how Lee Min-ho won the role of Hansu in the series.

The Apple TV+ show is a long-awaited adaptation of author's Min Jin Lee novel of the same name, a sweeping family epic that examines the ways one crucial choice can impact an entire generation in a bloodline.

As part of an international cast that includes Academy Award and BAFTA Film Award-winning Minari actress Youn Yuh-jung and Devs star Jin Ha, one key role as a would-be gangster has gone to South Korean model, singer and actor Lee Min-ho.

    pachinko-2-1647987280.jpg?resize=768:*

Lee is also one of the most ubiquitous figures on social media throughout the South Korean entertainment industry, and has earned numerous awards. In spite of his tremendous fame, Pachinko creator Soo Hugh told us Lee went through the traditional audition process.

"When the auditions started, I knew he was a big star, but I had never seen anything he was in," the writer recalled. "And I didn't know how big of a star he was. So I went in a little bit innocent, I have to say, and he was treated just like everyone else. He went through the same rigorous audition process.

"Min-ho has that innate contact with the camera. It's not about vanity, and it's not about looks. He just has a spiritual connection with the camera. And then Hansu, you realise, has to have that kind of magnetic charisma."

    pachinko-1-1647987157.jpg?crop=0.985xw:0

In this series, a Korean immigrant family's story is followed through four successive generations as they each leave their homes in search of better lives.

One of the central characters of the show is Lee's Koh Hansu, a Zainichi Korean fish merchant whose quest to make something of himself leads to entanglement with the Japanese Yakuza underworld.

Only three months into 2022, the jury’s still out on whether Pachinko will be the TV drama of the year. But, as far as title sequences go, this one has set the bar high with its joyous visuals of a multi-generational family dancing in their pachinko parlour to Let’s Live for Today by the Grass Roots.

Lee Min-ho excellently manoeuvres through a difficult character arc as Koh Hansu, an enterprising fish broker whose emotions and ambitions are barely compatible – more so when he meets the young protagonist.
