  1. Awww Happiness really bringing all us OG fans back to Soompi ! love that haha So happy to see you all again!

I agree with y'all that YSB is my favorite character of hers in a long while. I did watch Treadstone when it aired and did enjoy her character in that too but I was no where near as invested in that show than I am with Happiness. Though it was a lot easier for me to catch it live on my time than Happiness and also... no need for English subtitles haha. But it's been so great seeing people acknowledge her portrayal of YSB so far, especially the critics reviews. Glad the show's getting rave reviews all around the world.

I've seen some criticism of the show and people finding issue that the show presents YSB as the good moral compass, which is confusing to me because she literally pushes someone off the rooftop in the first episode because of selfish reasons aka she wanted to go home lol. She isn't exactly a paragon of virtue, and she never really was.

Anyway, can't believe we're almost halfway into the series T-T I'm curious of the show's pacing from here on out because we still have 6 episodes left after this weekend and I wonder how the show intends to end.

After Moving, I do hope Hyojoo's next drama is something mellow and slice-of-life, just for the nice scenery change lol. I really want her to be in something that's more character-focused. Feel like we haven't seen that from her in a while.

Also, are we really going to get that Elle photoshoot halfway into the series?! What is this promotion?

  2. Yeah, episode 3 is by far my least favorite episode so far lol. I've rewatched all the other episodes and avoid all discussions for ep 3 like the plague lmao. I really wish the writer had written that episode a little better and with more forethought. Episode 4 is a lot better and I personally didn't think her self-righteousness was as prominent here. The only scene where I went "Girl, why are you so dumb?!" was when she sniffed the blood. Like what did you think it was going to be? T-T lmao.

We all know YSB is reckless and insanely fearless and it's all to a fault. Like homegirl is 100% a Gryffindor lol but I do appreciate that she's quite fleshed out as a character. We are seeing early on that her being so reckless has certain consequences. She comes off strong and unbothered but also has vulnerable moments. I'm hoping there'll be some nice growth for her and she learns to be less "act now think later" and I really want her to have a one-on-one with Ji-soo to apologize or even acknowledge she crossed the line and was too judgmental with her. Please, writer, please let there be some good character development!

I think a lot of people find HTS to be the most rational and relatable person. I do too but I think he has his own flaws and hypocrisies and can also be self-serving, it's just he comes off more sympathetic to viewers cuz we know he has a family at risk. Honestly, so far JYH is the least complex character to me, cuz all he really does is exist to serve YSB haha. Which I find refreshing honestly, cuz it's usually the other way around with MLs and FLs so it's nice that it's the FL driving the plot with her actions, while the ML just goes along with the ride and unconditionally has her back. I do hope his character is more fleshed out eventually though. His mom kept saying he gets emotional at times but he's been super chill so far so we'll see.

I am obsessed with this drama though, and waiting every week for new episodes is torture. Really wish it goes on Netflix within reasonable time after its airing because I really think it's got international appeal. It's already trending on overseas OTT (Viki, iQiyi, Viu).

But tvN realizing how popular the show is getting and are now barely trying to promote it better all of a sudden is hilarious to me. There are so many views on the Happiness videos on their Youtube channel now. Like y'all should've promoted it better from the beginning and had faith in the work lol but w/e I'm just happy it's getting rave reviews, word of mouth continues to spread, and ratings at the very least stay stable.

I, too, am so excited and happy to see her and the show all over social media! Also, OMG you're back on here @adamag! It's been so long LOL

    ----

    Also, @frozentundra,

    Spoiler

I don't think the infected are capable of opening doors. I think this is a common trope in zombie works too. In the first episode, YSB closed the door on Lee Jong-tae and all he knew to do was smash his head at it. In the third episode, YSB lets out the neighbor from the bathroom, husband opens the front door and his wife runs out right after him, and then husband opens the emergency fire exit door to floor 5 and if you watch in the background, the door is slow to shut and you see Min-ji come out of it. The issue is what happens when there are a ton of infected and they're all bashing/shoving through glass doors... hmmmm lol

  3. Okay watched with subs and

    Spoiler

I didn't like YSB's characterization in this episode. I felt like she was heavily utilized as just a plot device. I was initially annoyed during the live-stream when she jumped right in to save her friend, but after watching it with subs I can understand it kind of makes sense and is within her character.

But the bathroom scene with the infected neighbor? That really annoyed me cuz I didn't understand why she let her go when she's a trained counter-terrorist specialist. Like how was she OK with possibly endangering other people by letting her free. I know the reasons why (infected neighbor seemed only interested in harming her husband), but YSB didn't know that for certain and it just doesn't make sense to me why she did that. Why put others in danger no matter how crappy they are?

Also, Idk I felt like she kept flip-flopping between viewing the infected as humans and constantly threatening HTS that she'll expose him cuz how they're being treated is inhumane, but then she also agreed with the housing manager/representative that they should keep the incident a secret amongst the residents because she so badly wants to keep her home? And also why was she mad at Ji-soo? I didn't understand why she was acting self-righteous? Like Ji-soo said, she lost 5 of her colleagues too.

Another complaint! I'm disappointed that she had to be saved by Yi-hyun twice! I was really hoping she was gonna perform some cool stunt with the shower head attachment in the bathroom but nope. Maybe she's only trained in handling guns in her field of work so can't improv as well as Yi-hyun? IDK. Like I'm fine with Yi-hyun being her savior here and there, as long as it's reciprocated cuz I wanna see capable, smart YSB protecting her home too.

    End rant. haha

  4. Hmmm hopefully Kim Eui Sung is a surprise guest appearance. That would be amazing to see him and HJ reunited again! Imagine he plays as her dad again haha

I think tvN just placed all their eggs into the Jirisan basket but I think also BH Ent might have struck a deal with them/TVing too cuz at least 3 of their artists (KGE, HHJ, HJM) have TVing originals, and so far Yumi's Cells has had the most promotion (which makes sense cuz KGE is the most bankable star atm)

Anyway, I live-streamed today's episode. I have... some thoughts... lol. Gonna wait for English subtitles and then reassess my opinions ha

The script is good; I love that her character gets to DO things. Not just action scenes (which she is amazing in), but in large and small ways, she is driving the plot. It's refreshing. And she's doing an awesome job bringing Sae Bom to life. Sae Bom is just a little crazy, lol. The chemistry between all three leads is good, too. I think it's well cast. They're all distinct and they play off of each other well. I found the picture they hung up instead of a wedding picture hysterical. There's just a nice balance between jumpscare zombies, and these funny scenes that keeps it from being too heavy.

I went poking around on DC to see people's reactions in Korea, and they seem quite positive. They like the pacing and feel the story is refreshing and they want to keep watching. Which is good to hear!

I agree with all that you said! I love that the drama is centralized around YSB and that her character comes off as fully-realized already within 2 episodes. We know what motivates her and behind that tough counter-terrorism specialist who pushes her trainees hard, she's got a personable side as well. I especially love her friendships with the female characters, such as the little girl and Jisoo (can we even call that a friendship yet haha). I hope we get to see more of her action scenes and since we all know YSB is a capable person, I better not see any scenes of Yi-hyun coming in and being her savior~!

I was so anxious about how it would be received domestically and honestly, with how crappy tvN/TVing has promoted it, I was expecting low premiere ratings so I was pleasantly surprised that it performed better than its predecessor, Yumi's Cells. I think tvN is realizing they have a potential surprise hit in their hands and are starting to properly promote it a little better. I'm seeing them showing reruns more (which had decent ratings of 1.66 in Seoul and 1.283 nationwide on 11/11 and aired after tvN's newest drama Melancholia whose 2nd episode had 2.459 in Seoul and 2.407 nationwide). I've been gauging reactions on the qoo and it's looking like it's got strong word of mouth. With so many new dramas premiering this week, it'll be interesting to see how it fares. I don't expect it to be a breakout hit with so much competition, but here's to hoping the quality of the show remains good and ratings stay stable at the very least!

It's too bad it's a TVing original and not available on Netflix cuz it's totally something they would've picked up and gotten popular imo.

Also, not sure how credible Mydramalist is, but on their Happiness page, they have Kim Eui Sung listed as a guest star!

  6. I was so glad for my insomnia when I saw the notification for her IG Live! I hopped on so quick! haha She was so cute and looked so happy. Hope she does more in the future

Anyway, since Treadstone debuted last night on OCN, it managed to hit top 10 in cable TV ratings (for # of viewers, not household ratings; I don't know the diff tbh) in both nationwide and Seoul!

  7. Thanks for the translations @frozentundra and @kembie! Really appreciate reading her insights~~

She's doing soooo much promo for Treadstone right now. It's crazy. I feel like it's more promo than she's done for any of her other Korean dramas lol

I read that Moving is expected to start shooting soon and that it might actually coincide with Happiness' filming schedule. Tho I low-key hope Moving doesn't come out until late 2022 so she can be a contender during award seasons for both Happiness and Moving lol. So in the event that she gets nominated and if the dramas are eligible for different years, then it won't hurt her chances. And last I checked, Pirates 2 is expected to be released in the winter... so she's gonna be super busy. Hope she's taking care of herself and staying happy and healthy!

  8. Haaaa yes I've been the admin forever (not the original one though) but I've been pretty absent lately, haven't I? Oops lol

I still very much keep track on Hyo updates though! I do miss the discussions I used to have on here with other users, so hoping we can bring some of that liveliness back in this thread.

Anyway, I'm super pumped for Happiness and can't wait for filming to start! Checking obsessively for updates lol. I normally love apocalyptic thrillers but ngl the plot for this sounds confusing between the fake marriage trope, class division in the apt, unquenchable thirst as the ID, and then the thriller/mystery solving aspect. Like do they get fake married so she can get her apt? If so, like... why?

I hope the writing is tight and clean. Saw some articles describe Hyo Joo's character to be girl-crush material, so I'm excited for that. Hope Hyo Joo gets to perform some cool action scenes as well. I don't know how much romance there'll be but hoping it's a satisfactory amount cuz PHS is cute af and it'll be a waste of their visuals if there's nothing more than unrequited, possibly sacrificial love ;_; I need some cute and lively BTS footage with another flowerboy type calling her noona! It's been too long since W!

Best thing about this new drama is that it'll probably be simultaneously streamed on Netflix (as with other Studio Dragon prods), so I can watch on TV comfortably, which is SO BAFFLING to me because I still remember the days of having to wait for fansubs and having to torrent the episodes lol. Crazy how much K-ent has flourished in the past couple of years, but also highlights how long I've been in this fandom t-t lol

  9. Just popping in here after GOD KNOWS HOW LONG butttt just wanted to say I'm so excited for this year + 2022. Our girl is booked and busy, happy and surrounded by good friends. We are going to be fed so well these upcoming months T-T

I don't know how I feel about the premise of Happiness, but at this point, I'm just anxious to see her on the small screen again. She is literally the only reason why I bother watching Kdramas lol. I know nothing about Park Hyung Sik but he's cute so I hope to see strong chemistry between these two, especially since the premise seems quite serious so I don't expect a very strong loveline. But I think I'm just desperate to see Hyo Joo smiling and being her happy self... Been rewatching Hometown Flex eps and old interview videos a lot lately lol. Hoping she will update her IG a lot during production~~ I expect many coffee trucks sent by her friends!

And then... still.... waiting for Moving confirmation..

  10. Thanks for the news @eLizza! Love seeing that she's still got a strong presence in Japan. Hoping her movie comes out as scheduled next year. I'm still like wthecc when tf did she film this lol

Excited to see her in variety again and to be reunited with so many people. While I'm happy that she's got a movie gig this year, I'm wondering if she'll ever do another drama anytime soon. Seeing so many breakout Kdramas the past year (thanks to Netflix) makes me envious that they are so easily accessible now compared to back then. No more waiting for fansubs lol.

  11. Some of the choreographed stunt work is a bit less impactful in her scenes versus that of the men's but I think that might be on purpose? I think it really plays into showcasing that So Yin's talent/adversity comes from finding and using other items to use to her advantage. She's obviously a capable fighter but hand-to-hand combat isn't her strongest suit so we really see her shine in fight scenes that allow her to utilize her quick thinking similar to her first fight scene in that first episode when she uses the tie to help take her enemy down. We also saw something similar to this fight style in her Cold Eyes role, where she used her iPhone as a weapon in hand-to-hand combat.

The show is ok as of now and I think episode 1 is still its strongest episode. They went overboard on the soundbites for all the fight scenes lol.

TV Ratings: USA's 'Treadstone' Racks Up Huge Delayed Viewing Numbers

The first two episodes of Treadstone, USA Network's extension of the Bournefranchise, drew modest initial audiences: The series premiere on Oct. 15 brought in 647,000 viewers for its initial airing, and the second episode a week later dipped to 536,000.

The drama from Tim Kring (Heroes), however, has made huge gains in delayed viewing. The series debut nearly tripled its audience after seven days, growing to 1.84 million viewers. Episode two grew by a factor of more than 3½, rising to 1.97 million and surpassing the premiere.

Treadstone has also tripled its adults 18-49 rating over seven days, from an initial average of 0.14 for the first two episodes to 0.45. A lower starting point makes large percentage gains easier to achieve, but even so, it's extremely rare to see a series with an initial tune-in above 250,000 viewers make that kind of leap.

Treadstone's 1.43 million viewer gain wasn't large enough to make the top 20 for the week of Oct. 21 — it ranked 41st among all broadcast and cable shows for the week. The top of the charts is pretty similar to previous weeks, with This Is Us (+1.46 points) and Grey's Anatomy (+1.05) getting the biggest bumps in adults 18-49 and the former finishing second in viewers added (4.73 million) to The Good Doctor (4.99 million).

    High Spy

Hyo-Joo Han comes to America through the Bourne universe.

    Paula Chin

Hyo-Joo Han was ready for something completely different.

A superstar in her native South Korea, she began her acting career in 2005 and quickly skyrocketed to fame as a rom-com actress in films and on television. Now she's making the big leap to Hollywood: on the USA Network's Treadstone, she plays a mild-mannered piano teacher in North Korea who is actually a covert CIA agent.

The series, premiering October 15, takes place in the Bourne Identity universe and follows several sleeper spies around the globe, all of whom have been trained by the infamous black ops program to become superhuman assassins.

"I'm a big fan of the Bourne series," says Han, who believes viewers will relate to her character, even though she's a killing machine. "She's a strong, good woman — a normal housewife and mother who is struggling to complete her mission while protecting her family. That could apply to anyone."

Born and raised in Cheongju and discovered at 16 in a local beauty contest, Han finds the physical demands of the role a constant challenge — for example, she has to train daily in hand-to-hand combat.

She notes that working on a TV series, American style, presents other challenges. "It's a very different process for me. I'm used to having one director for a show, so having lots of directors was confusing at first. But now I'm enjoying working with so many talented people," she says.

That includes her costars, including Omar Metwally (The Affair), Brian J. Smith (Sense8) and Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). The production is based in Budapest, but separate storylines mean the actors aren't together on set that often.

"When we are, we all get together and go out for dinner," Han says. "Everyone is very caring and cheerful, and it's been fantastic."

As exciting as working on Treadstone is, she knows her legions of loyal fans — dubbed "Hyolics" — are waiting for her back home. "It's impossible for me to say how much I appreciate them. I want to keep giving back and continue to do Korean films and TV shows as well." Even so, she admits Hollywood has her hooked. "It's an amazing opportunity, and I want to keep going for more and more. I never want it to stop."
