    @realistic2280a, his half brother, ZWC, mentioned that it was due to loyalty to their deceased father. He did what his mom wanted,

    married a girl of her choosing instead of his long-term gf

     but in the end she just gave all control back to his older brother ZSC instead.

     

    The stepmom is quite a complex character. They set her up to be the "evil stepmother," but as the drama has progressed it's evident that she is far from it. I feel very sorry for her.

     

    On a side note about the half brother though,

    did he really get divorced?

     

    Maybe it's a little lost in translation for me as an international viewer, but I'm confused about what he told his ex and her family versus how he behaves with his wife and mom. It seems like he's being shady as heck and lying to his ex.

    It's his real voice in Forever and Ever. He is very soft spoken, that's why he's always dubbed in costume dramas like the first season (One and Only). I think he's also dubbed in earlier modern dramas as well, Miss Crow with Mr Lizard was the first modern drama I watched that he wasn't dubbed.

     

    I don't mind his voice, but I can see why it might not fit in the historical or fantasy "authority" roles. So far I've liked all the dubbers they've had for him.

    You're correct, I saw on MDL that Wang Xing Yue 王星越 played the crown prince and Wu Man Si  吴曼思 played the princess in Season 1. In season 2, ZSC's best friend is played by J_Black 此沙 and his sister is Wang Rui Xin 王瑞欣. So, unfortunately for us, no one from season 1.

    Well, I found this drama to be quite surprising. The overall story is meh, the leads have little to no chemistry and you have to leave all common sense/logic behind to enjoy it.

     

    However, JYC has his usual unexplainable charm, some of the supporting casts are loveable dorks and the city where it's filmed is beautiful. Anyone know where it was filmed?

     

    I've never minded JJY, but this drama did a terrible job with her makeup and styling. There were some scenes when she showed up that gave me a scare... seriously, wth was the production team thinking.

     

    I'm looking forward to finishing the drama, fast forward certainly helps.

    Absolutely agree! It's refreshing to see Ren Jialun's take on a bumbling noob in love. :wub: 

    I'm so glad I made it through season 1 to watch this season! Although I'm always enamoured with costume dramas, this modern season is inducing all the "feels" that I felt were missing from the first. Both Bai Lu and Ren Jialun are doing a wonderful job, the supporting characters are also such a charming addition this time around! :D

    I think the actor that played the crown prince and later Emporer is playing Zou Sheng Chen's bestie in the sequel. That's the only familiar face so far.

    @omiki Just this season has a sad ending. Season 2 will air in September and has a happy ending.

     

    Perhaps the downplayed romance just isn't for me, or things are lost in translation as an international audience member, but I just don't feel the chemistry between the leads. Both the actors are doing a good job and I'm convinced about their roles, but I feel like something's missing. Ya know, that unexplained butterfly feeling that makes you grin when the leads are together. :(

     

    I'll still continue, because having watched 10 episodes, I'm practically halfway through it. However, I wish I could enjoy the actual drama more. I'm just watching for Bai Lu and Ren Jialun's lovely faces and period costumes now.

    Yes, based on a novel from the same writer of Longest Day in Chang'an. I believe it's also the same production crew, so the visuals, costuming, and technical aspects should be top notch.

    I didn't intend to watch The Rise of Phoenixes (TROP). The 70 episode length was daunting and despite the stunning cinematography, cast and novel material, I was just too burned out to invest the time. All I could think about was last year's disappointment with Tribes and Empires...what could of been exceptional, ended up as a drawn out mess.

     

    I was still going on my dreary way, trying to get over The Legend of Yunxi (LOY). None of the new C-drama releases piqued my interest and I was getting desperate, even to the point of editing subtitles and timing for LOY because I was so bored. Of course all that rewind activity didn't go without notice; my Youtube recommendation feed became flooded with C-drama videos. On the mobile app, the videos start playing automatically without sound. One night I randomly stopped on an interview of Chen Kun regarding his role as Ning Yi. Even without sound, I was intrigued by him. I ended up watching the interview in full and decided that I'd give the drama a try.

     

    Chen Kun and his portrayal of Ning Yi did not disappoint. He truly anchored the drama and was the most consistent character, despite some gratuitous plot lines. I liked Nini's portrayal of Feng Zhiwei, but I did not like what they did to the character of Feng Zhiwei. I hated all the tropes that they forced on her...the everybody loves me syndrome, the damsel in distress, the unknowing pawn, the noble idiocy, and so on....As early as the 20 episode mark I was already at my wits end. Seriously, how could someone be so smart and calculating but always fall into other people's traps? When she wasn't interacting with Ning Yi, I had to start fast forwarding or else I would have had to quit the drama all together.

     

    The supporting characters were also a mixed bag. The Emperor, Headmaster Xin Ziyan, Head Eunuch Zhao Yuan, and the deposed Crown Prince Ning Chuan were the more memorable of the bunch. The exceptional abilities of each actor to portray multifaceted, complex individuals is commendable. As for the rest, I felt that they were merely check boxes for dramaland requirements...the run of the mill mastermind, some bad guys, some good guys, the lackeys, the second lead, everyone that hates the main leads, every that loves the main leads, etc. Although they fulfilled their purposes, none really gave a believable performance that I could connect with.

     

    It's not unexpected that TROP falls in with the usual 90% of C-Dramas where the last act goes off the rails and the ending is a hodgepodge of how to richard simmons viewers off to no end. However, I still can't believe how disappointed I feel. Personally, I don't mind sad endings, but only if the journey is worth it. In my mind, it was absolutely not worth it for poor Feng Zhiwei. It was a disgusting waste of her character, to have her be tortured with such loss and not have any real closure in the end. The last arch of the drama was an absolute misstep. If I ever re-watch this drama, I'll stop at episode 50 and consider that the Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei eventually fulfilled their promise to marry and be together for the rest of their days. Forget the rest of the crap that came afterwards...LOL
