  1. lol funfact but last year a portion of XZ and WYB's BTS clip on the boat leaked and a lot of weibo bloggers started rumors that the 2 of them don't get along. but after the BTS vids started getting released last month people were like "....oh, we get it now".

now everyone is thirsty for their pair interviews bc they're funny af and ppl are like "we never knew WYB talks this much" lmao

I picked up the (Chinese)  novel version - so far, I'm not very impressed by what transpired up to chapter 16 - not sure if I'm reading the right thing, as it is really different from the drama.

the novel is nonlinear so the flashback intersects here and there and not in order. the drama is linear-ish so it’ll seem different but the major events are all there. I also didn’t “get” the novel until around chapter 30 lol but it does get better I promise

  3. never thought I'd hear someone say the "entire point " of MDZS is the BL lol. I'd say if there was a rank of high profile BL novels where the romance is the least relevant part of the plot, MDZS would be top 5 (the other 4 would be Priest's novels lol)

anyway before I was not sure what's the point of removing WWX's identity as being the founder of demonic cultivation, but I'm really seeing the downstream effect of that now. WWX is having a really hard time controlling his cultivation, at time it seems more like his flute is controlling him (me now realizing the drama title is named after his flute lol). and he's already somewhat losing control Wen Ning even though he's just getting started. I saw many fans disliking the changes because it "softens" WWX but I'm really curious where they're going with this next. XZ's WWX is so much more tortured and sad, rather than arrogant and angry like in the anime, but ngl I don't hate it

  4. I think the drama team just assumes only the most ardent fans of the franchise would watch their bts vids cos they literally spoil everything in there. it's kinda funny

I just realize something very sweet :) Maybe I am the only one who realize it now but I didn't know the difference between calling them by their birth name and courtesy name means a certain closeness and familiarity. Apparently, calling their birth name display a certain type of closest and I realized that LWJ always call him Wei Ying and not Wei Wuxian whenever he is mentally thinking about him. That is sooooo sweet! If I recall correctly, the first time was when WWX is sleeping on his rooftop and he said goodbye referring to him as Wei Ying... I always wonder what is the different but now that I know...I find that really sweet and warm. I felt like WWX called him Lan Zhan almost at the very beginning to get a rise out of him but mentally he also always call him by his birth name. Now I know why the scene when they met after WWX turn to the dark side and it felt strange when WWX called him LWJ instead of LZ because it put distance between them. :(  Btw, I love that scene, the acting, the chemistry and dialogue exploded for me and it hurts. Poor LZ but I also felt bad for WWX as well from his expression after LZ left.

yas it's also something I realized belatedly while reading the novel: no one calls them Wei Ying and Lan Zhan other than each other. not even their closest siblings; JC only uses Wu Weixian, Shijie uses Xianxian or A-xian, and LWJ's brother only calls him Wangji. I'm super happy drama is actually emphasizing this when

    Spoiler

WWX was pushed down in Yiling, among all the voices calling him we can hear LWJ's voice calling 'Wei Ying' very distinctively and it got him to get up and survive...like that's the subtext of my dreams :dissapointed_relieved:

i don't know why they have the invention in the first place.. there was no such Wen sect weapon in the novel..

and i think yin iron is just another name for it.. for the iron used to build the seal..

well.. this is going to be a long wait.. if they follow the original story and given preview of ep 24.. i think we are stuck in the past uptil ep 30/32

methinks they did that to increase the screentime for the Wen characters. Wen Qing was all over the first few eps thanks to that. I mean the actress Meng Ziyi’s name is listed 3rd after Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo in credits/info pages/video titles instead of Jiang Cheng or Shijie’s actors...that’s wild lol

I guess that’s a part of why they gotta drag the past out too. they’re much more likely to film extra scenes with the Wens in their evil lair for “plot” than film a random scene like drunk LWJ stealing a chicken for WWX, no matter how much we would rather see the latter

(kind of wondering if a hug is even plausible at this point or if it’s just gonna be stares until the end...I’m not at all optimistic welp)

actually background of stygian they have changed in the drama..

the whole scene of them going into cave and the woman telling them that stygian seal exists from time immemorial and then their journey to "find" stygian seal.. this is all new stuff.. but what they have really done is taken the adventures from present and put them into this storyline e.g. the flower girl thing..

      Reveal hidden contents

    Me just waiting for romance..

because in novel, in present day, Lan Zahn is like constantly princess carrying WX or hugging him or you know always ready to hold him and such..

i don't know how they will show us here.. but dying for all those scenes

there are 2 seals in the drama: WWX's 阴虎符 (aka the Stygian Tiger Seal from the novel) and Wen Ruohan's 阴铁 (roughly translated to Dark Metal, a new invention by the drama). WWX's Stygian seal has only appeared in the first scene of ep 1 and looks completely different than the Wen clan seal they're trying to find

I actually see a lot of confusion about this everywhere so I'm guessing it has to do with the quality of the eng subs? cos there's no way to mix the 2 seals up in Chinese, their names are very different. edit: wait never mind I checked the WeTV subs and they differentiated them clearly, one is called Stygian Tiger Amulet and the other is called Yin Iron

Anyone know where WWX gets his flute? I am a bit confused because he got the sword from the 'creature' shell and I assume he kept the sword in his pouch...and when bleed into it, it sort of activated the darkness within...we see how the darkness overwhelm him and it keep asking him does he want revenge and then the sword appears, he picked it up... Now my question is where did the flute came from? Did the sword turn into the flute?

For novel reader, can I ask the background of this flute?

in the novel, WWX's flute is a flute that he made during his time in Yiling. there's not much details because he does have the ability to control the dead with any flute, it doesn't have to made of a specific material. this is kept the same in the drama as seen in ep 1 where he just cut down a random bamboo tree and made a flute on the spot

    Spoiler

what he did with the sword in the novel was turn it into the Stygian Tiger Seal (this object also already made its appearance in the first scene of ep 1). I think the drama is gonna keep this the same too.

I was wondering, how is the romance... I mean bromance... I mean ... f r i e n d s h i p  compared to the novel/anime? Everyone up until now (ep 14) was very positively surprised with the main leads interactions (because we all know the rules too well =.=) but is the drama still tamer than the original(s)?

the drama adds more interactions between the leads than there are in the novel up, until this point. I think they also have a more amicable relationship in the drama. but it's also tamer in the sense that in novel's Xuanwu cave scene WWX actually was undressed and LWJ BITES him at some point. totally understandable why that had to be changed and I'm very happy with the replacement scene we got lol

anyway, I highly suspect they're adding extra "fluffy" interactions between the 2 leads in the flashback to replace the novel scenes that they will inevitably have to cut out in the present timeline. (like imo the Lan ancestor cave scene + the LWJ drunk scene is very obviously meant to replace a much more suggestive present time LWJ drunk scene in the novel). there are a lot stuff in present time that I just can't see making past censorship, but hey I hope they surprise me

  9. hmm I wish ep 20 did more with WWX's experiences in Yiling. like that's the one thing they could have spend their extra runtime on instead of all that time at Wen Qing's place. but I am pleasantly surprised at all the gory details of his return and how good he looks whew

one thing that I really dig though is the "confrontation" between LWJ and WWX. although the lines are pretty much completely intact, the scene conveys a totally different dynamic from the novel and other adaptations. them adding this WWX expression after LWJ left is SO good.

  10. cried again for ep 18. damn those Yunmeng siblings scenes really gets me. prop to the drama for pushing the cute childhood scene early to before this whole fixing JC's golden core thing. the impact is that much stronger. looooove Shijie's actress and although I think JC's actor overacts a bit but he does have great bro chemistry with WWX.

  11. I cried like 3 times watching the 2 new eps. I was very sad when I read the novel, but seeing this with actual people really got the tears out of me. the action sequences are super clunky as usual but I think I'm just gonna have to deal with it and just watch for the emotion. I have to say Xiao Zhan is truly perfect for this role, he's like my imagined Wu Weixian walked out of the pages. the rest of the flashback is gonna be very rough and requires a lot of great acting as it's a major shift in the character, but I trust him to deliver. also the voice actor as well? fantastic combo

btw seeing people's confusion about first few episodes really reminds of my first read of the novel lol. the first 30 or so chapters were so incredibly confusing with the flashbacks and all the names

Did you see that CJD has published a trailer to her new drama? What's it called? I've no idea what it's about. The trailer makes it look like a pure thriller. Have they toned down the m/m element? Who payed for this drama? I mean, after all the troubles with Addicted, it's still a little baffling how these shows still get made. Who's willing to take the risk? I don't get it. Obviously, there's a big potential audience, but since so many shows keep getting pulled, I don't understand  why they risk it. Trying new versions of the theme? See what works?

maybe cjd paid for it? like how she apparently paid for 85% of addicted

idk, sometimes people are stubborn, especially when its things they are passionate about. cjd basically said she set up her own company so she can create live actions of her bl novels. it's the company's original purpose

    Spoiler

although, after seeing that trailer, i'm wondering if she decided to sacrificed bl just to make the novel happen...she changed the title...and the novel basically revolves around love at first sight and how the main character is oh-so-irresistible to those around him, but it looks like the drama went through a genre change into action...

director chen peng (of like love) is also another example of bl fanatic101 having his own company. he's is filming & writing bl like a man on a mission, even though its dubious whether any of them will get past the gates.

anyway, i think in dealing with censorship everyone should retain some rebellious spirit, especially when its related to a topic that really really shouldn't be censored like lgbt.

@shuweican you be more specific about what you wrote

have you got any link or similar ? thanks

i'm talking about chai jidan's weibo which is linked in the first post of this thread. she shared some videos of the filming. i'm just saying, her new series has a boxing arena and warehouse explosions. people used to say addicted got a higher budget than counterattack but this one takes the cake.

It is because it transcends typical notions of uke and seme. Many LGBT do not identify themselves with stereotypical gay behaviour too. Secondly, there is a happy ending, rather than a tragic one. In the novel, they received the blessings from everyone around them in the end.

yep, you pinpointed exactly what i find to be addicted's strongest points. although technically, i don't think they apply to the webseries bc it's such a small glimpse of the storyline; any journalistic discussion will have to talk about the addicted the franchise as a whole.

i totally agree that there's significantly less heteronormativity in gh/bly.

    Spoiler

the fact that the gh and bly switch in bed, no matter how rarely, makes so SO distinctive in bl (even gh's penchant for the word "wife" doesn't diminish that lol)

even amongst cjd's works, out all of the main and supporting cps gh/bly is the only one that switches. somehow, bl writers just has a really big aversion to switching, even though it's the closest to reality \_(ツ)_/¯

with your second point, it's so unfortunate that we won't be able to see it depicted in live action /sighs, but bly's dad is a fantastic character.

    Spoiler

it's very rare to see a parental figure like him in bl bc parents are used to create conflict and drama 99% of the time. bly's coming out scene was great bc it was so lowkey. seeing something like that onscreen in china could probably help a lot of people. sometimes parents just know and are prepared, instead of tearing everything apart one after another like a korean drama.

The fact that the series is subtitled in several European languages, the fact that breaks all stereotypes of gays (these are 2 straight men in love) are indirectly supporting the image of what the gay world wishes. Moreover despite i have clue about the writer but it is a fact that those 2 boys/men are in love each other and no interest in other men hence again another supportive reason to talk about them.

if and when you are writing your article, i'd REALLY advise you not to use the portrayal of "2 straight men in love" and "no interest in other men" as evidence for this webseries supporting the lgbt community. there are other and better takeaway messages in addicted.

or if you do, i would suggest doing some research on the many studies about how these 2 tropes in BL results in fetishization of homosexual relationships and affects the image of the lbgt community negatively.
