I wish that LMH did not have to wear so much lipstick makeup, do they have to make them wear lipstick?  I have seen some shows where the men don't do it or it is very light.

I made a similar comment awhile ago. His lip coloring is quite heavy in LOTBS. I think it must be his personal choice. He's so famous that I'm sure he can do whatever he wants in terms of makeup!  I do think he has almost perfect lips and probably wears more lip color to emphasize them.

He doesn't wear much lip color at all in GB but that was a much more realistic film.

These are just my speculations based on what I've seen in his work.

What a lovely, sad, sweet episode this is! It just tugged at my heartstrings all the way through, from the sad conversation on the bed, when he denies his feelings because of his own heartbreak as a child, to the merman's death and his former lover's grief, to Dam Ryeong's learning of his own coming death and saying goodbye to his love, to HJJ's coming clean that he has feelings for SC at the end.  And he just looked beautiful all the way through. Great acting too.

I enjoy the combination of humor and drama in this series.  I was particularly amused by  the conversation about how to treat a mother-in-law, and the wanna-be-his-girlfriend's declaration of how well she'd treat his mom while she is actually treating her like dirt.

Change of topic:  I have my own question for anyone that cares to answer. I've been fascinated by the fact that LMH has fans all over the world. So I'm curious about which countries people are living in on this thread. Probably more of us from English-speaking countries since that's the language of this thread. I'm originally from the U.S. but now live happily in Mexico. I was happy to discover that Mexico has such an active Facebook LMH fan group (Minoz Mexico Official). I hear that young people in particular in Mexico are very much into K-drama and K-pop (so no wonder I found that LMH pillow in Puebla!).  Great fans here, who just held a Hallyu festival in Mexico City.

  3. So we don't have any idea when this show will be shown on Viki or Netflix, etc.? The recent Arthdal Chronicles was interesting because there was only a one-week delay from broadcast in Korea to Netflix (didn't much like the show itself, however, except for the SJK eye candy). Just wondering how these things typically work.

It is funny about calling himself a girly boy because it is kind of true that many flower boys are considered girly boys. Men are supposed to be macho, hairy, and muscular and  a lot of American women like those kind of men. Even American men consider Korean men, LMH included, Song Jun Ki, Kim So Hyun and many other top stars as sort of not manly enough or nerdy.

Yes, my best friend thought LMH looked like a girl when I started raving about him in Faith (well, he does have long hair in that one). But over time she's gotten into Korean actors big time, and thinks LMH and Song Jun Ki are the best looking. Guess who's been watching LOTBS with me?

  5. LOTBS just keeps pulling us in as it continues.  Nice acting from LMH when as Dam Ryeung he finds and rescues Se Hwa. And I like the storyline with the timeline parallels that keep emphasizing the point that everything repeats, clear down to the tangerines! There are several hilarious scenes in this episode; my favorite was SC and the merman crying into their black plastic bags to create pearls. Would that we could all do that!

I also agree that LMH looks terrific in this series. Both he and the role are a little older, so I find him more attractive as a man than I did in BOF or Heirs, for example. I don't think I've ever literally gasped at an actor's beauty the way I do fairly frequently when looking at him.

I'm always amazed that he seems to be so full of laughter and relatively modest,  at least in public, and shows such appreciation for fans. It would be so easy to become a conceited jerk with his looks and talent. I read somewhere that his costar in Faith, who was 10 years older than him, said that she'd never met someone so young who was also so kind. He seems to have kept much of that attitude.

I'm glad i found this amazing thread while googling LMH.

Welcome, SophieH! That's how I found this thread too. This is a great place for all things LMH! One thing that helped me over the long absence were the thousands of photos, hundreds of youtube videos, and of course all his series and movies. I've just been a fan for two years, so many of the things I just mentioned were new to me. I admire all of you who have been fans for a long time who toughed it out during his MS!

  7. LOTBS Ep 6:

I don't have a lot to add to what others have said about this episode. I enjoyed the William Choi act; he does a good over-the-top fop. I particularly liked the part in this episode when she nearly dies and he's so heart-sick. Good acting and he looked gorgeous.  He always looks beautiful, but particularly when he's sad or emotional. I mean, those eyes!  And I enjoyed his bullying the hospital about feeding her. Very sweet!

Irrelevant comment: There must be a Korean thing about the first snow fall. I've seen it in other K-shows as well as this one.

I have just finished watching Faith- I thought it was incredible - what a great actor LMH is.

Yes, I thought so too. I think it must be very difficult to portray a stoic character like Choi Young, and LMH used his eyes to great effect. Some people say it is his best work in terms of acting, although I thought his acting in GB was terrific as well.  The screenwriter of Faith, Song Ji-na, was also quite impressed with his performance. She said that she contributed 70% of the character of Choi Young, and he contributed another 130%!

And finally how gorgeous did LMH look in the camel coloured jacket and the leather trousers!!

LOTBS, Ep 5. Yes, @Lindyloo421, he did look terrific!  I hadn't caught the leather pants before now. I like most of the clothes he wears in his shows; very smart and sophisticated, even when casual.

I'm enjoying the Josean part more and more. Dam Ryeung is a terrific character. And HJJ is developing nicely too. We can see more of his kind side along with the tough part that won't tolerate being kept in the dark. He is very brusque with the other woman, demonstrating that he has no interest, but it would be kinder if he just told her. Is he not wanting to offend his hyung, who would perhaps like to see the two of them together?

Both of LMH's characters in this series are very intelligent, trying to figure out their respective situations. I don't know why SC won't tell him about their previous relationship. Her memory "wipes" are imperfect, so she might as well get ahead of the game and give him some information about their relationship. But, again, romance needs its challenges to fully flower.

Re: beards. I agree that a full beard is more attractive, and it would be interesting to see him with one. But his face is so beautiful, I'd miss seeing all of it!

but I feel many of his fans especially the younger ones or those that love romantic comedies or keep away from violent American shows would object. He could lose those fans.

Maybe he can do a movie as a serial killer or other villainous character, and follow that up with a tv series that includes action and romance. Just like the movie GB followed by the series LOTBS, he'd gain some fans who didn't know how well he can act and keep the old ones too. Whoever manages the roles he takes has been really smart, probably LMH in consultation with someone at his agency, with LMH of course having the final word.

My own hopes for him in terms of roles are pretty simple. While I've enjoyed everything he's done, some of you may know that I'm a crazed "Faith" fan. I wish he'd do another role as a hero (or anti-hero) with longer hair! I think he'd still look terrific in that type of hairstyle.

  11. LOTBS, Ep 4

This series is so much fun as HJJ sees ordinary things in a new way through SC's eyes. The fireworks scene is a great example. I think that's part of the attraction for him. We also see his sweetness when he takes SC home with him. He's being protective of her but also still trying to figure out who she is and what's going on with his memory. Some of the scenes are just hilarious: the birthday cake scene, as well as his roommates complaining about him bringing someone else into the house.

I have to say that Sung Dong-il, who plays the villain, is just terrific in this series.  He's so repulsive in the Josean era with those horrible teeth and his leering gaze. And his quiet menace in the modern era is eerie. I just watched him in another series in a completely different role as a psychiatrist, no less. So I'm feeling a little admiration for his versatility. LMH always seems to be in shows with excellent actors around him. A nice tribute to him, not afraid of being outshone.

I decided to ask what your thoughts are on LMH taking on the role of a bad guy, such as a murderer or serial killer.

He was already a murderer in GB, but I know what you mean.  A serial killer would be interesting. I don't know that I'd prefer to see him as a sociopath like Ted Bundy, although he could use his natural sweetness as part of the bait to attract victims.  It would actually be more heartbreaking to see him as a serial killer who is torn about what he does, driven by his obsession but who also yearns to be normal.  In either case I wouldn't be able to watch it over and over again like I do with his other works. Too creepy.

I'd give a lot to stumble across HJJ lying on a beach. I'd even be happy to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Oh well, back to rest of the episode. I have to say my favorite character in this episode is the little girl that the mermaid first tries to mug and who then befriends her. She is so deadpan and hilarious with her 30-going-on-10 take on life! And she consistently steals scenes from any adult with whom she shares a scene.

The story begins to take shape as we start to learn about HJJ's family situation and find out who are his mother and father. We continue to see the pain he carries around losing her; going to the aquarium alone on his birthday is very sad. There is also something very poignant about him meeting the mermaid again when he has no memory of her. I'm really not sure why she felt the need to erase his memory in the first place ... but, hey, this is a romance, and what's a romance without barriers to overcome?

Their meeting again during the Josean period is also poignant, as both of them realize they are each other's former love. As I've said before, I really dislike the Josean costuming for the most part, but the more I see LMH in it, the more I like it. Or, rather, I like him in it. He manages to be handsome, sophisticated and sweet, all at the same time.

I'm really enjoying watching this series again. It was a great idea of the members of this group to watch all of his series, episode by episode, and share comments. Wish I'd been part of the group from BOF on!

  14. He's just looks terrific at the presentation by the King Sejong Instiute! Such a good project for him; it's a great fit.

Has anyone gone online to take the lessons offered by the Institute?  I haven't found them easy to use, but perhaps it's just me! Any other online recommendations that you've found to be useful for starting with Korean? I know there's a ton on YouTube. Just looking for which ones might be particularly good. Thanks!

  15. Thank you for the posts about joining Minoz. But I had trouble figuring it out. I found a Facebook post on Minoz Mexico that's a helpful tutorial  about how to join Interpark, which is evidently the first thing you have to do. Tomorrow they're going to post a tutorial for the second part.  The text of the post is in Spanish but the screen shots of Interpark's website are in English.  Here's the link to Minoz Mexico's Facebook page, followed by an English translation of their post about the tutorial.  On their Facebook page the screenshots of Interpark below the text are pretty self-explanatory with lots of pointer arrows. I had no trouble joining Interpark.

  16. LOTBS, Ep. 2 (22)

I continued to laugh out loud at his co-star's antics.  I enjoyed watching her go through several complete mood changes as she watched different types of shows on his laptop.   I also laughed at HJJ and the other "evangelist" both belonging to the CMC (Con-artists from Mensa Club)!  Yes, it was mean to leave the other guy with no money, but I think HJJ was pissed that he kept hitting on his girlfriend.

I thought the chase scenes went on a bit long, but the scenery was terrific, including our two co-stars. Just as she says in this episode, his eyes are pretty and they sparkle (especially when he smiles!).

A lot of groundwork is laid in this episode that is built on in later episodes. Dam Ryeong speculates about being reincarnated in the future (in the Director's cut). HJJ finds out his mother left a loving message for him. He starts feeling bad about being a conman. He begins to have feelings for the mermaid beyond just rescuing an innocent soul.

LMH looks very thin to me in this first part of the series.  He puts on a little more weight as the series progresses, which, interestingly enough, accompanies the increasing weight of the drama. Maybe they did that deliberately to show HJJ maturing as a person.

Does anyone else think that the shot of him sitting on the rock at the beginning of each episode is just stunning?

    Lastly, welcome @serendipity...!

  17. LOTBS Ep. 1 (21). This is one of my favorite episodes in this series, and I appreciated the reminder about the Director's cut.

    - I have an aversion to men's costumes during the Josean era, as the hats look silly and the hair style too severe to me. But he wore it with his usual grace and good looks. Liked the feather in his hat. And the expression in his eyes when he first sees her is worth a paragraph of dialog.

    - The modern day portion was terrific and I liked his costar's antics; she was hilarious. I laughed out loud several times, particularly when she tried to jump through the window of his hotel room and when she was pulling tissues out of the box with such joy. He looked terrific in his white suit on the island, and how romantic was that walk up the escalator with her in his arms?!

    - I agree, the lighter is a little over the top, but this is a fantasy. Not much different than picking her correct shoe size right off the shelf. I can suspend disbelief pretty easily.

    - One small criticism. To me, he wears very intense lip color in some parts of this series. Wish he'd tone it down a bit in next series. He doesn't need it to look absolutely stunning.

    - His acting continues to improve with every show he does; he's just excellent in this series. He seems so at ease and genuine in these two roles. It's quite a change from the heavy dramatic role he played in Gangnam Blues, so perhaps he's having fun here, as well as being so much fun to watch!

  18. I had redo my sign-in to Soompi.  Still not sure it's right. Now MsDot2 instead of MsDot.

Thanks for all the summaries and pics of Heirs!

Does anyone know how to donate to Promiz?  Every time I click on a link I end up in a website with no English, so can't really tell what to do to donate.

    Musings:

Just rewatched Boys Over Flowers.  In BOF he was, of course, good looking with that smoldering glower, but I think he was still growing into his face.  Even handsomer two years later in City Hunter,  then a year later in full flower and drop-dead gorgeous in "Faith", and so on. Looking forward to seeing some new pics of him.

It seemed to me from reading an interview and watching one of his later fan-meets that he had some concern about leaving his 20's and not doing younger dramas like Heirs. I'm sure that's largely a worry about whether his fan base will continue to follow him into more mature roles. Obviously he's made movement in that direction with LOTBS and especially Gangnam Blues (thanks #CarolynH for sharing that great clip). So interested to see what he does next!
