I like how Dong Mae stays close to AS so quietly.

Maybe its time that AS corrects the ugly gesture, when she

threw the money bag on the floor.

Dong Mae in a red kimono...so handsome.

AeShin is anything but ugly. Maybe Dong Mae should stop shooting her just to make her quit RA.

It seems to me Dong Mae's so call protection, is just trying to hog the attention of AeShin. Knowing AeShin feels nth for her, he still trying to make her visit him once per month by holding Sumi and Eugene as hostage just for the sake of it. It's all forceful on his part, I hope to see some development of DongMae where he's moved past this obsession, it's getting boring tbh.

That's where HS 's growth shine in EP 16, he has come to realize instead of plucking the flower and wit, it's better to leave it alone, and embark on a new journey in setting up a newspaper company, where only truth matters and not catchy headline. ROFL, KES's dig at current media ?

THIS! I have to use your words, since you so perfectly put it. AS' character indeed took a very weird turn. I can't see her ambitions of free and independent Korea and it's very mind-boggling, since she was pretty much the only main character who went against every expectation and took parts in some controversial operations, but suddenly AS in the latest episodes stops being the patriot and her feelings for the homeland is nowhere to be seen. I really can't figure out what the writer is trying to establish with AS' character. A noblewoman going around dressed in man's outfit fighting with a gun against everyone who disrespects her country is now nothing more than a woman in love who daydreams about living in the US with her lover... Okay, there's nothing wrong with her being in love but AS' path is more of a downgrading rather than a development and it's very disappointing to see a woman so strong who was ready to sacrifice all of her interests for the sake of the country now talking about wanting to give her heart to a man who doesn't even know where his loyalty lies...

Downgrading? The RA 's cause is not to fight for the country, but lapdog of the King, doing dirty work for them. AS is now freed from being just a YES man, she's capable of realizing the diverging path of RA not adhered to what she believes in. Eugene helped her realizes that what she has been fighting for, would not allow the slaves to live prosperously in Joseon, only aristocrat can thrive. AeShin is now freed from the chain that bind her down in following orders, she can now differentiate which order would benefit Joseon.

Her romance with Eugene freed her from the cage of Aristocrat, she is determined to save Joseon, a place where all the people can live happily. She is now totally freed from discriminating against the lower class people, as proven by her deep love in Eugene. Her willingness to defend her love of lower class origin, by agreeing to her grandpa and live the rest of her life alone. Her grandpa wanted her to get married through which she can be shielded from danger and she refused stating that she has trained to the point of capable in protecting herself. When her grandpa ask for Eugene, knowing Eugene will get hurt by his slave origin, she promptly reject the idea, and try to shoulder all of the blame on herself. Name me the last female character in kdrama that feature similar inner strength?

If you read the history of Joseon, there's pretty much nothing can be done to save it at this point in time. Unless the writer willing to twist the history. Also, if you watch EP 16, the rewind of their beach date, AeShin mentioned about heading to Shanghai to meet his father's comrade, and continue to fight for Joseon eventhough she's far away from home. FYI, after Japan annexed Joseon, there's a temporary Joseon government set up in Shanghai to continue the fight against the Japanese.

The RA at this point in time, did not fought for REVOLUTION, rather they just fight to maintain status quo. There's hardly any value of patrotism in it.

If any character lack development, it's Dong Mae.

@kansas424, you are new here, right? You may want to backtrack a bit. I have mentioned I won't be commenting much in Soompi. Nevertheless, thank you for the invitation. I believe in regard to AS's character development,  I echoed @KDramaLogic. I  have also written quite lengthy about it in DB. Feel free to drop by.

I am seeing it differently from many here as you can see from my earlier posts and that is how my mind works. I don't let my love for an actor or actress clouded my judgement in analysing characters and plots though it won't stop me from enjoying the beauty feast as well. I criticised DM before and I will do it again to him and any characters when I just can't relate.

I don't see Soompi any different than DB. So I will assume claim of pulling down any site than the other, a non existent. Please understand as I am understanding why people can't relate to other characters than AS or EC. Because we see and analyse things differently. You may analyse e.g. DM on one perspective. I analysed him by others. I have written lengthy before. My views stand that I find HN, HS, Hotaru and DM are more compelling to date. I came to Mr. Sunshine not for the main love story but for the RA, hence it should give you some idea where my stance is. It does not change since then. You may also deem them as a matter of preference in addition to different way of how I am viewing this drama. Cheers!

Appreciate the reply, it's kinda weird that you're interested in story of RA, but find HN, HS, DM more compelling to date? I mean, none of them have direct link to the RA story-line as much as EC-AS which branched off to Potter, Seung Guil etc. If any of you actually watched EP 15, the RA camp esp the Potter has started to waver in his belief of the cause he's been fighting after confronted with EC and AS. Perhaps you guys were expecting more action scenes which literally only show action and nth else.....

I just feel that there's no need to bring down a character just for your favorite sake. To go as far as to use the word " hate" ?  (referring to the comments on DB). It's an extremely unfair remark nevertheless, i have never seen the other camps openly slam Dong Mae? That might change if they happened to visit DB though. The afore-statement made does not apply for all DM fans.

This drama has immense depth, it's time to look beyond the shell of lust, and try to find inspiration from the story as a whole Majority would talk more about EC and AS, because they played the major part of the story. There's nothing to bitter about.

@kansas424 I think I remember seeing a similar claim about DB being a cancerous site at the comment section. Honestly, if I were to be such commenter, I would claim similarly with Soompi as I have seen and read quite a number of fanatic postings and bashings but thanks and kudos to the mods controlling them before things get really out of hand. Having said that, I am not going to put myself on the same pedestal by making such claim. I refuse to judge people and their preferences. I would rather having the space to discuss why a certain character is flawed in my opinion and why others are more compelling instead of simply accusing the commenters for having views that are evidently in contrast than mine. It is their rights to feel what they feel for any characters or plots. We really should not go to that route. Such attack itself is worst than being cancerous. It just shows how ones can't accept differences in preferences/opinions.  Not everyone can relate with what AS is as of 16 ep than what AS was in the beginning. Many of the commenters are actually rooting for AS as a character from the beginning but until recent eps, some has indicated their frustrations from their observations. And I am among them. And I am also one that root for the supporting roles, DM included. Hence, I will not be backed down by comments like fangirls or cancerous s***. Please have some respect when writing here. I believe all of us here are grown ups. Soompi is not that much different in purpose than DB since it provides space for kdrama fans to mingle and enjoy sharing their likes and dislikes of kdrama. Let's keep it peaceful in both places. I personally find beanies are a funny bunch where I envy, in a positive way, their articulate and creative minds. It makes reading their comments so enjoyable despite we are not sharing views on some points.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the defensive remarks made against the AS hating reasoning, rather than trying to pull Soompi down to the level of DB. Because, you really didn't respond to any of them directly. If you want to talk about lack of development for character, DM should spearhead that list.  HS has decided to kick start his very own newspaper business in exposing the truths, EC has taken up the role of royal army trainer, AS has been summoned to royal palace, most probably will be appointed as teacher for the princess and prince.

DM? Nothing much going on there since day 1. Flirting around girls, piggyback 1 of them, and hugged another, acting all cool and that. Yea, he's been caught and tortured, but which characters in Mr. Sunshine hasn't been tortured either mentally or physically by losing someone precious, got shot etc ? .Hopefully the next EP, we'll get to know more from the gunshot incident, how it gonna change this character's view of things.

No hard feeling, just trying to initiate discussion that comes in both way instead of 1.

Hi, new Soompier here!  I find Mr. Sunshine to be one of KES' best (if not the best), well-written, ambitious works.  And the cinematography and character backgrounds are beautifully-shot, well-paced, and on-point given the (inaccurate, according to K-nets) tragic historical context of the impending Japanese annexation and colonization of Joseon Korea.

Appreciate the effort, but you should really take a look at the comment section to really understand why they hate on AeShin.

I disagree about the lack of character evolution of AS that you were talking about. Regarding her RA involvement, you only need to watch EP 15 to observe her growth. The conversation between AS and Eun San, whereby she claimed she knew EC would never harm the RA and especially the potter. And even giving up the chance to take revenge on the man responsible for the death of her parent, to resolve the whole RA vs EC and Joseph's death saga.

Watch the whole conversation between AS and her grandpa. How she refused to safeguard her own future by getting married. And when grandpa ask for Eugene, she stopped him from doing so knowing EC will get hurt by his grandpa with regard to his slave origin. Wow, a female character taking initiative to protect her love one? This is unlike any past korean drama, whereby woman has always been portrayed as weak and requires protection from their man.

She's readied to live her life alone than betraying her love for EC.

Lots of review on AeShin has been written in weibo and heaped with praises. Which is why it shocked the hell out of me when AeShin was hated, like literally the only place you can find such comment, which happened to be the hideout of Dong Mae nation aka Dramabean.

For fans who are still sad and depressed over the goodbye scene of Eugene and Ae Shin, here’s a tongue in cheek version that will have you rolling on the floor in laughter. No offence to anyone, it’s just for laughs. If you don’t want the scene to be ruined for you irreversibly, please do not click. Haha, you have been warned......:D:phew:

Man, i hated this edit.......this was my favorite scene of the whole ep 16.....just feel not right.

Hi @kansas424, your first post at MR.SUNSHINE.. welcome to our abode! :lol:Hope more will find their way too, and talk about the drama here. Admittedly it's not always easy discussing about this particular KES drama, but all of us are enjoying it the best we can and sharing (English) info, pics & videos are much better here than anywhere else, in my opinion.

Thanks very much for the tip about Hee Sung, I've been wondering if he had stopped questioning his parents about Eugene by simply ignoring about it. So, he will still find out what really happened to EC's parents but even though the latter has found his closure (revenge on LSE), it'll be HS feeling the burden of regret now. Ohh.. I think we can see now how KES saving her trump card and bringing it up the 'conflict' at the right time. ;)

Thanks Rubie, i have been spectator of this forum for the past months now, and i thoroughly enjoy it

@rubie thank you for the kind words. For EC's hurt, KES better wrote something really convincing to make me understand her putting burdens on him again and again. ( I feel like I'm his mother :P)

For the burning letters, I see post office stamps - Eugene and Aeshin's letter didn't go thru post office - , so more than likely they are those mails found in room 205, from Hamgyung Province.

The thing is RA showed that it's a group( including LJM and Emperor) that could not protect Joseph whose only intention was to help and later even if Eugene helps them out again, there's no guarantee that RA will protect Eugene. Under Emperor and LJM, is RA trying to build a nation where slave and butcher can live? LJM showed that just because Eugene rejected King's offer, LJM thought that EC's against the Joseon.  The group as itself right now I don't think it deserves Eugene's help.

So, RA needs to change, and I hope KES has that in mind for part 2. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode!

Thanks a lot mistymorning for the translation.

As for recap, there's no need to go to DB for that. i know that it's good to read differing thoughts regarding the drama itself, but DB's content has 0 depth and understanding regarding the essence of this drama. For those who can read chinese, weibo is a good source of in depth review that really captured what the writer tried to convey through dialogue and screenplay.

It seems that, this week, both EC and AS will be at odd with each other again as Joseon affair has meddled with their relationship. HS might find out about their relationship and the story behind EC 's childhood (someone posted it HS will find out) and how badly his family had treated them back then. Hence the sobbing scene of HS saw in trailer, and most probably lead him to call off the engagement.

AS 's grandpa death? EP 16? I hope there would be some warm moments amid all the bad happenings.
