I'm assuming Yeong Sim is actually a grandma,

I'm actually more interested in knowing who Yeong-sim than the joker.  I mean, the joker is the joker. Whoever he is, I'm not that curious as long as he's caught in the end.  But in the case of Yeong-sim, I've always been curious about who she is. At one point, while watching Episode 11 last night, I was like, "My God, Yong-sik! Can't you just pay Yeong-sim a visit?!?!"

Could it be that Hyang Mi was actually killed by the pimp rather than the Joker?

I'm suspecting the police officers will be forced to apprehend the pimp cause he has motive and Dong-baek as witness saw him threaten Hyang-mi. But we all know Yong-sik knows better so he'll continue to investigate the joker.

So we finally have a face on the Joker, although is it really him or just a red herring..??<_<

@1ouise  also has doubts and I agree. It's still too early in the series to be sure it's Heung-sik. Heung-sik appearing at that exact moment with the cat food appears like a set-up and if the previous episodes are any indication, the writer loves toying with us and throwing suspicion at different people.

and the excellent use of ensemble cast is just as good.

I agree. The writer and director did a good job creating a neighborhood or community that makes the story believable. "Excellent use of ensemble cast" - I was thinking of this when Yong-sik went to the realtor to ask questions about the old building that burned down and when Yong-sik was talking to the ahjummas. He's going around talking to people, not just the main cast, and it feels like a real neighborhood that exists somewhere.

      • When Dong-baek's mom started to wrap her fist with a leather strap when the coach hit Pil-gu.
      • Oh my God... Yong-sik stepping in to save Pil-gu... wearing shades and doing the hero entrance and all (it reminds me of Top Gun haha).  Also, it was Yong-sik who brought the drone to the game. My heart.
      • While I'm a slightly indifferent towards Jung-ryeol, watching Pil-gu call Yong-sik after the game instead of him was a little sad. Jung-ryeol did try to protect Pil-gu by threatening the coach. Although he wasn't able to protect Pil-gu when the incident happened, it still must have hurt to see Pil-gu get excited around Yong-sik. He kinda deserves it but also not because he's been trying to be a good dad to Pil-gu.
      • Dong-baek's mom eating at Ms. Kwak's restaurant.
      • When Hong Ja-yeong, future governor of Ongsan, said, "You don't get to decide the line." :glasses: And Hyang-mi realizing she's no match for our future government.
      • Pesticide + cat food :skull:
      • Our future governor finally leaving her husband
      • Dong-baek hitting the pimp with a pan and shouting she has a bad temper. EVERYONE HAS!

      • Dong-baek's self-defeating attitude is getting stale. When she was talking about why she didn't want to go to Pil-gu's game in that self-defeating tone I legit rolled my eyes. She has valid reasons and I get it, but it's already the 11th episode and still no improvements in the self-esteem department? I'm not liking that Yong-sik always has to interfere and give her advice for her to get over things and shake things up.
      • Also, I didn't know Dong-baek and Hyang-mi had such a long history.
      • Maybe all that scratching will lead Yong-sik to the doctor who knows people's allergies in the neighborhood? --> Wrote this here before the last scene. Yong-sik did go to the doctor and the doctor mentioned Yeong-sim!!! Yeong-sim again! :D Now I want to meet her so I'd know if she's important to this whole story.

Lots of people will get a prize tonight for their previous guesses. :star:

I think it will help later on that someone like Hui-jae believes in Seun-ho to prevent him from completely turning into the dark side.

I spoke too soon but it seems that Seun-ho truly needs someone who believes in him. When Hui-jae took back what she said in the previous episode and compared Seun-ho to his father, he lost it. Now he'll be colder even towards Hwi's sister. It's a little sad.

    '

Anyway, a solid episode yesterday yet again. I am happy that we are over the back stories and the plot is moving forward.

Regarding characterization and questions whether Bang-won is evil or not, aside from the point that Bang-won has a reason to resent his father, it is also important to remember that when it comes to characters, especially those that are based on real characters and events that took place during the war, no one is completely good nor completely evil.

She should divorce him and start campagning as governor.

I can't wait for this to happen. But also, I hope there's redemption for Gyu-tae just so his character can be an example of how men should reflect on their actions. I'm imagining a closure scene between them where after their divorce and after the dust settles, Gyu-tae would meet with his ex-wife and tell her he's voting for her, Ja-young thanks him, and then they go their separate ways. This ending would be nice to wrap up their relationship.

  6. I think this series has found its footing. I understand why others thought there's something wrong with the pace in earlier episodes, but episode 5 seems stable, right? I'm happy.

My favorite parts of this episode:

Hwi's four-man team, they work well together.

I also like Seun-ho's team  up with the Jurchen soldier.

Don't you think they'd make a good team if these six people came together, plus Hui-jae giving them information in the sidelines?

The cool background music sounds like the Lucifer theme, if you watch that show.

Funniest line: "This came out of a chicken's butt. My mouth is cleaner."

Hui-jae told Seun-ho what happened to Hwi was his father's fault, not his. I think it will help later on that someone like Hui-jae believes in Seun-ho to prevent him from completely turning into the dark side. Aside from Hui-jae, there's also Hwi's sister who will prevent Seun-ho from completely falling over the edge as he knows he needs to look happy in front of her. Seun-ho told his father Hwi will die for Yeon, but I have a feeling this is foreshadowing and in the end, it will be Seun-ho who will sacrifice for Yeon.

I like that Hui-jae is ambitious. I'm looking forward to where she'll end up.

That scene where Hwi scolded his sister was so cute but also sad at the same time. Also, the market pavilion scene was so intense. I like the hesitation in Hwi and the conflict in Seun-ho's eyes of seeing Hwi look at his sister but also mustering up the courage to make Hwi look bad in front of Yeon. It's a heavy scene because you known both Hwi and Seun-ho are in pain.

So far, we know that Hwi has the makings of a good leader. People follow him, which is why in earlier episodes, they rallied behind him in the battlefield. So when it comes to the gamblers, I hope the gambling den owner softens towards Hwi and they become allies because Hwi would earn their respect. I can see that this is how Hwi will amass followers and an army loyal to him as the series progresses. All the groups he will come across will naturally follow him because of his good traits. Maybe this in the First Strife of the Princes, Bang-won said he needs Hwi.

Seun-ho's power move in the end to report directly to the king and blindside his father... SO COOL.

I'm loving this series more and more.

It reminds me how I always tell my mom to this day to buy stuff for herself instead of saving up the money or spending on someone.

Awwww...  And this is what's good about this drama, right? You often see your real life relationships in the characters' relationship with each other. The scenes are so relatable.

Looks like the real reason why she ends up dead is because she finds out about the guy who kept putting the cat food. Her fate was sealed the moment she said YS was looking for him. Maybe that's why YS expression is like that in the future when her body is found. He feels guilty....As for the loan shark, he is bound to cause trouble when he comes to Ongsan:mellow:.

Oh this is what I thought too! When Hyang-mi stopped on her tracks to talk to the guy refilling the cat food, she sealed her fate. I think the loan shark will prevent them from catching the joker. Since the loan shark has a motive to kill Hyang-mi, they will arrest him, case closed, instead of looking for the joker. But of course, Yong-sik knows better so he will continue to investigate and with more urgency since the murder is getting close to Dong-baek.

I was crying along with PG when he was speaking to JR:tears:. Poor child grow up too fast. I'm surprised too that the Cheap guy is JR lol:lol:. It makes sense because GT was always the bad guy who threatened DB with her rent and other stuff. I'm also glad JY put her mother in law in her place. It was funny how MIL started making up excuses for her son but changed her tone when JY dropped the bomb that the other party is a Bar girl. Unbelievable lol:joy:.

I actually teared up several times while watching episode 10, and the one time was when Pil-gu was crying at the restaurant and while he was talking to Jong-ryeol by the ocean. And same! I also thought Gyu-tae was the cheap man, so I was OOOOOOH-ing last night when Pil-gu called Jong-ryeol cheap. As for uri future governor of Ongsan Hong Ja-yong (I can't stop calling her that ), I love that we're getting to see her growth as a character. Her life is like a mini drama in a drama. I love it.

Yeong Shim's case was about what you've noted, which owner does the new pups belong to since the parents are from 2 different families.  I am curious tho, why there is no cat in Ongsan? :D

If I remember correctly, wasn't Yeong Shim about the dog owners or was it a cat lol:sweatingbullets:?

I just feel like there's something about that Yeong-sim case. Haha He/she gets mentioned often and I find it amusing that what if Yong-sik keeps on avoiding the case because it's soooo trivial, but it will be the one that will help him find new clues?

JR is trying hard but he is doing it all wrong because he didn't have a clear understanding of their break up.

And also, because he hasn't sorted out his family situation yet. It would have been better if he sorted out his marriage with Jessica first before coming in and barging into Pil-gu and Dong-baek's life, and planned how to deal with the media when word gets out that he has a love child.

  8. Episode 10, favorite scenes:

    • Yong-sik's thought (VO) before kissing Dong-baek: I no longer want to be the nice guy. :w00t:
    • Dong-baek and Yong-sik looking awkward at the dumpling place but holding hands under the table :D
    • Yong-sik: I like you   Dong-baek: I know. Everyone in Ongsan knows.
    • Dong Baek in a short, red dress and red lipstick
    • Hong Ja-yong (uri future governor of Ongsan) putting Gyu-tae's mom in her place
    • Pil-gu spilling his guts to Jong-ryeol :tears:
    • Dong-baek's mom pushing Yong-sik to be more aggressive in prusuing Dong-baek
    • The ending scene!

    Thoughts:

    • I just realized that Yong-sik keeps on avoiding Yeong-shim's complaints. I don't even know who he/she is but what if Yong-sik is missing puzzle pieces in the serial killer case and going to Yeong-shim will reveal clues he needs?
    • Jong-ryeol is the cheap man lol according to Pil-gu.
    • Hyang-mi knows Dong-baek's mom is acting. Good job to those who said so in the previous pages. I initially thought she really had dementia. :D
    • Does this mean, a loanshark is coming to Ongsan?

Could it be entirely attributed to prejudice or was it more run-of-the-mill jealousy?

I think it's both. Prejudice because of cultural norms, jealousy because their husbands are frequenting Camellia AND also jealousy because Dong Baek is different and she doesn't put herself in a cage unlike the ahjummas. In my opinion, they're also secretly jealous that although Baek looks pitiful by their standards, she's in control of her life and doesn't feel the need to conform.

Take Hong Ja Young, for instance. She used to take pride in having a husband even if her marriage is falling apart. Ongsan women take much pride in being part of the norm, but I think deep inside, they also feel jealous (and also amazed) that Dong Baek doesn't feel the pressure to conform. Maybe that's it?

JY imagination of killing her husband while worrying about her new wall made me ROFL

She's a hoot. I didn't expect to like her, to be honest, but she's now one of my favorite characters.  I hope to see her chill and have fun in future episodes with her girlfriends. Dong Baek, maybe even the market ahjummas, and Ms. Kwak.

It's a wonderful commentary of those of us who were born and raised in this sort of culture. We don't verbally tell each other much that "I love you. I miss you." but our grumpiness does mask a kind of fondness.

It also shows how culture sometimes molds us into human beings we don't want to be. The market ahjummas' response to Dong Baek leaving shows they care for her. Did they truly hate Dong Baek when now they're sad she's leaving? It's obvious they don't hate her. But what made them ostracize her in the first place? I think it's a society that taught them othering: (1) that being a single mom is just... weird, (2) that being a single mom is beneath married women, (3) that being a young, single woman who runs a bar is just wrong, or (4) that a young, single woman who runs a bar must be out to steal your husbands.

If they lived in a society with a culture that is forgiving to... young, single mothers, for instance, they wouldn't have felt that way about Dong Baek and they would have been friends from the get go. I appreciate the fact that the show teaches us to police our own prejudices because it may be ruining our relationship with others.

I'm looking forward to what the lawyer would do to her before she ends up being a victim lol.

Same! I hope Hong Ja Young, future governor of Ongsan :D, will do something to put Hyang Mi in her place. Also, I hope Jung Ryeol doesn't give in to Hyang Mi's demands. Just let her expose everything. Pil Gu will be sad for a while, but I think it's for the best. The child needs to know who his father is, and it's better that Jung Ryeol doesn't lose to Hyang Mi. Also, Dong Baek needs to face everything head on as her future mother-in-law advised her lol, and I think she's ready so just bring it on Hyang Mi

  12. I'm done watching episode 10.

So many people using the serial killer's favorite "Don't be a joke" line in this episode.

    My favorite scenes:

The market ahjummas feeling sad that Dong Baek is leaving

"Who could stop themselves from loving that person."

Hong Ja Young and the blood spatter

    "Pilgu... with flowers:star:

Dong Baek hearing the voices of the people who love and care for her - Ms. Kwak, her mom, and Yong Sik - while she was talking to Jong Ryeol.

Of course, the kiss. Duh.

Woah! Interesting. I remember a few pages before, someone said the ID found in the crime scene showed a Paju address. Then if Helena is the victim, it would make sense since many foreigners live in Paju right? Maybe Helena is originally from Paju and moved to Ongsan to work?

But then, General Yi changed his mind when he thinks that it is useless to attack Liaodong as it will bring more harm than benefit, that is why he decided to retreat and make a Coup D'Etat.

I see, but why did they have to kill the advance party themselves? Why didn't they call the remaining men with Hwi so they can all retreat? Is it so they would have a reason to retreat? Like, their advance party was entirely killed so they had to retreat?
