Ref to above post on that actress...i dont think "career ending"...probably she is quite clever. She knew she wasn't well-liked....even if she stepped away and avoided the drama completely, she won't gain any positive points. So she made use of all the attention she would get regardless good or bad. And she also won't (didn't want to) be seen as total loser to her anti-fans.

If she act adequate enough...the high viewership of this drama will help her.

That’s true too! I just thought people would be extra, extra harsh on her, and her acting skills are already known to be lacking. Maybe it’ll even typecast her into these sort of roles and get her more acting jobs. Either way, she is definitely perfect for the role of Ji Heng, but i would have boycott too if she played Feng Jiu! Nothing against her personally, but it would ruin my mental image of FJ! :)

Besides Dilraba & Vengo, i wonder if any of you imagined any other actors/actresses as them, or what your vision of a perfect DHFJ would be?

  2. The actress playing the Demon Princess Ji Heng is Liu Yu Xin. It’s caused a huge stir in China because she was the person who initially bought the production rights to The Pillow Book from Tang Qi to create a drama. She was going to star herself as Feng Jiu and Kris Wu Yi Fan as Dong Hua. Basically, the whole of China was disgusted and pissed at her, and petitioned and threatened to boycott her. Firstly, people had already fallen in love with Dilraba & Vengo in 3L3W10MPB. Secondly, she is 30 (too old for Feng Jiu who is supposed to be about 16 or 18 in the book), and her image is not the pure and innocent type (see photo below). Because of the enormous backlash, earlier this year, she finally sold the rights to Penguin company. People in China then petitioned for Penguin to re-cast Dilraba & Vengo in the leading roles. But the 10MPB cast belongs to Yang Mi’s Jaywalk company. I’m sooo thankful that the 2 production companies have been able to agree to collaborate and re-cast Dilraba & Vengo. As expected, there would be actors and actresses from both companies. It would not surprise me if Liu Yu Xin sold the rights on the condition that, even if she can’t play Feng Jiu, she will still get a big role, which is why she now gets to play the enemy love rival Ji Heng. This is why I say she’s perfect for this role, since everyone hates her already. It may or may not be career-ending for her, but emotions will definitely be heightened by her presence. Pic of her:

Can someone please remind me who Zhe Yan was exactly? I read the book sometime around last year and somehow can't seem to recall his presence! Was he in the Aranya's dream verse?

Zhe Yan is the phoenix god who resides in the Ten Mile Peach Orchard and is a mentor/friend to Bai Qian and Feng Jiu. He is of the older generation gods and is peers with Mo Yuan, Bai Zhi and Dong Hua.

I just reread the Pillow Book recently and the "Dong Hua reincarnated into emperor" actually happened. The pretense part was the reason why DH requested it. He wanted to let FJ experience a life where they were in love. If it didn't happen, then Qingti would not have been a real person whom FJ owes a lot. This is one aspect of the pillow book that vastly differs from the TMOPB book.

As for the "shadow" being sent to FangJing Valley, DH was recovering from an injury (hence sleeping for a number of years) and his butler was afraid someone evil might know about this and harm him or take over the world. So without telling anyone except for that one god of the underworld (that underworld god is one of the few who could create shadows of a person) he sent a shadow of DH's soul (?) for safekeeping. I think it might work like one of those clones that one can use if the original is dying or whatever.

Then you need to read it again. You’re getting many aspects of the 10 Miles drama mixed up with The Pillow Book. The “pretense” was requested by ZHONG LIN while DH was ASLEEP. The “experience a life where they were in love” was DRAMA ONLY - the mortal realm arc in the book happened over 300 years BEFORE DH ever met FJ. And FJ owes Qing Ti because he took a stab for her in the mortal realm, because FJ was trying to protect the emperor (whom she believed was DH but actually IS JUST A RANDOM MORTAL). Everything else you said about the shadow is correct. 40 years of shadow in Fanyin Valley PLUS 60 years of pretend reincarnation in mortal realm = DH’s 100 years sleep covered. (Note DH’s shadow was Chen Ye, who lived a few hundred years, but 40 years was the time spent with Aranya while she was alive.)

TVN, THANKS FOR REPOSTING THE POSTERS!!!!!!!!!! Oh perfect that Liu Yu Xin is playing Ji Heng... perfect because everyone hates her already! :P

  5. On a slightly different note, this has been confounding me for a while. Does anyone know where the image below *click to reveal* originates? I have several copies of the official The Pillow Book Pictorial Album that was drawn by Ibuki Satsuki. I also have the special edition copies of the books with the bookmarks and poster. None of them have this image. Was it drawn by a fan that imitated Ibuki Satsuki’s style? Or did Ibuki Satsuki publish the image on her Weibo but not the official book? Or does someone know exactly the source behind this very popular image that appears everywhere? Thanks to anyone who can solve this mystery for me! :)

@Cedric Ong thanks for the clarification..I knew I wasn't delusional.

    Taicheng is super extravagant!!

@Wotad hrmmm..I see what you're saying, but....I think he did went into the mortal realm..not his full self but apart of him. I need to reread the book..but it's super longg...hahah.

While DH was in his 100-year sleep, a part of him (his “shadow”) was dropped by Zhong Lin into Fanyin Valley a.k.a. the “lower realm” and was born as Chen Ye, a bird spirit. The lower realm is a lower part of the heavenly realm where the bird spirits dwell. He never went into the mortal realm. The whole “reincarnate into a mortal emperor” thing was only written by Si Ming into official records so that no one would know DH was asleep. No one knew this except for DH, Zhong Lin and Elder Yun Zhang - this is all revealed in Chapter 16 of Book 2 of The Pillow Book. Not even Si Ming knew, as he only followed instructions to write that DH is to go to the mortal realm, and that is also the same misinformation that FJ learns through Xie Gu Chou and Si Ming. FJ only finds out the truth in the final chapter of the book when Zhong Lin told her that the whole mortal realm thing was a pretence. You need to read the book again if you can’t remember this crucial twist! :)

I am ok with this as I do think a direct sequel wouldn’t work since the drama changed so much etc. However, I am praying for YM and MC to do some cameos.

It would only work if they continue making it all up. If that were the case, they wouldn’t have needed to spend money buying the production rights to The Pillow Book off Liu Yu Xin. But they have the rights now, so they will make a faithful adaptation more or less. :)

So they are just going to ignore 10 miles and change some stuff?

They said this drama is going to follow Tang Qi’s books - Vengo’s interview has explained it is NOT a sequel to the drama. It is an original adaptation of The Pillow Book. So if you’re referring to the 10 Miles DRAMA - just pretend that DHFJ story didn’t exist, because that was written by the scriptwriters and completely different to the original books. In the books, DH and FJ meet properly for the first time AT the royal wedding of YHBQ, which occurs 223 years after Mo Yuan wakes up.

According to a chinese article and list of human realm chars leaked...the human realm storyline is different from the previous drama's version. Some names from the novel eg Ye Qing Ti remain....so i suspect they combine the version in the novel with some new stuff. The article said the reborn version of Donghua would be a young Crown Prince instead of the Emperor (see the 5th char listed)....my guess is this change might be the scriptwriters know fans don't like Donghua (if really reborn) to have concubines...and haha...also have beard too.

    https://kuaibao.qq.com/s/20180710A1C4B600?refer=spider

But still, as long as the official cast and info are not announced yet....a small chance that all these might be different in the end.

OOOH!!! Thanks for explaining the possible *new* mortal realm arc for the new drama. I’m ok with that, and it would mean something unknown to look forward to for people super familiar with the story already (me!). But as someone said earlier, this alteration could mean DHFJ have 4 lives instead of “3 Lives”: FJ as DH’s pet, DHFJ as bird spirits (Chen Ye & Aranya), DHFJ after YHBQ’s wedding, and a possible new spin on the mortal realm arc that actually includes DH. Regardless, i’m soooo excited! Yes, i think besides not wanting DH to have concubines, it simply is inconsistent with his character, and Tang Qi meant that to be an intentional consistency to set up the twist, but the drama actually made DH into a sleezy beardy emperor & even have FJ desperate enough to be with him.

Am I missing something here?? How come both of you guys said DH never went into the mortal realm?

I thought he did.... I don't fully remember what happened... But he was a king and FJ was one of the concubine... I don't think she was loved (like the drama), so she ended up marrying the mortal, whom she was debted to...?

Someone correct me.. My memory is fuzzy.. But I'm pretty sure DH was in mortal realm... That was part of his life experiences..

You’re confusing the 10MBP drama with the Pillow Book. ;) I’ll do a bit of a lengthy discussion/analysis because i think Tang Qi is sooo genius! Don’t have to read this. :)

In the 10MBP drama, what you said IS what happened. DH wanted to return FJ’s love, so he reincarnated into the mortal realm as the emperor and asked Si Ming to bring FJ down to the mortal realm to be with him. DH told Si Ming to put down on official records for Tian Jun that he had gone to the mortal realm to experience the 6 sufferings of mortal life. From here on, it was the scriptwriters taking liberties with BQ’s POV in the first book, since the producers of the 10MPB drama DID NOT have the rights to The Pillow Book (and they had to concentrate on YHBQ’s story, since DHFJ’s story mostly happens AFTER YHBQ’s royal wedding).

In The Pillow Book, FJ does go down to the mortal realm where she married the Emperor, then later, married Ye Qing Ti. Until the end of the book, she still believed that the emperor was DH (in the books, your reincarnation doesn’t look like you - that’s only in the drama in which the actor also played their reincarnated role). FJ held that mistaken belief all the way till the end until just before the end of the book when she finds out from Zhong Lin that DH never left the heavenly realm. DH had used his essence to save the universe from the Hui Ming toxins, and needed to sleep 100 years to recuperate his essence.  However, as the reader, we actually find out all about this a few chapters earlier when DH had completed making the Miao Hua mirror with Su Mo Ye in Aranya’s Dream, and was looking at his and FJ’s past. THIS is when DH, and we as the reader, find out that DH was in a 100-year sleep. Zhong Lin had arranged for Si Ming to put down on official records for Tian Jun that DH will go down to the mortal realm 40 years later (I guess disappearing for 40 years was ok for this recluse in Tai Chen Palace, but disappearing for 100 years was going to raise suspicions - and a mortal reincarnation is 60 years. Forget the 1 year = 1 day rule because that was only in the drama). Anyway, we also find out that Zhong Lin had sent DH’s shadow down to Fan Yin Valley to keep guard of the Hui Ming toxins. FJ had heard about this from her friend Xie Gu Chou, and asked Xie Gu Chou to send her shadow down to be with DH’s shadow to help repay her debt. DH’s shadow was born as Chen Ye, and FJ’s shadow was born as Aranya. Unfortunately, Chen Ye and Aranya were like star-crossed lovers and misunderstood each other their whole lives, never fulfilling their fate to be lovers. Xie Gu Chou returns to FJ with the news that her shadow had failed its mission. He also lets FJ know that DH will soon be going down to the mortal realm for 60 years and FJ decides to go down as well. ALL THIS we find out from the Miao Hua mirror.

Because Chen Ye and Aranya never fulfilled their fate, we learn from the Guardian of the Stone of Destiny that their fate had finally transferred to DHFJ, who originally had zero fate to be together. But FJ’s persistence had moved the heavens, and Chen Ye and Aranya’s fate, which was disrupted by Su Mo Ye, now transferred to DHFJ so they had a chance to be together. This is why for 400 years, nothing FJ did worked out well and DH never even knew she was in Tai Chen Palace for 400 years. But after DH wakes up from his 100-year sleep and she sees him again at YHBQ’s wedding, they keep running into each other over and over again.

I understand your confusion because Tang Qi took 2 books to set up this massive twist, but the 10MPB drama sort of ruined it by stepping in, taking liberties and creating confusion (i still love the drama as a standalone story!). For example, when FJ was in the mortal realm, she used the Two Lives Spell to present herself as a lovesick concubine because she didn’t feel anything for the emperor. She tells BQ she believes it is because she is too heartbroken over DH and no longer has feelings for him, but is merely here to repay her debt. What FJ doesn’t know at this point is that the emperor isn’t even DH, and that DH is actually asleep in Tai Chen Palace this whole time. She used the Two Lives Spell because she had no feelings for him, thinking it is because she is too heartbroken, but the deeper reason is because he isn’t even DH! And this Two Lives Spell is basically a hint that sets up the story for a massive twist later! She saves the emperor from drowning and the emperor falls in love with her, and this is where the drama takes liberties. In the drama, she sleeps with him and they have a romance. In The Pillow Book, she rejects him over and over again (because BQ removed her Two Lives Spell, so she can’t even pretend to have feelings for him). The emperor was heartbroken and married her off to Ye Qing Ti. FJ hung around for a few more years to protect the emperor from a distance, and finally was going to take a sword stab for him (still believing he is DH), but Ye Qing Ti took the stab for her instead. So even though she thought she had repayed her debt to DH by saving the emperor from the water, she now owed a debt to Ye Qing Ti. The amazing irony is that she never repayed her debt to DH either, who all this time was peacefully asleep and blissfully unaware in Tai Chen Palace.

The beauty of the story and FJ’s character is that she always remained faithful to DH, and she also maintained her dignity throughout her pursuit of him. She did not sleep with the mortal emperor and did not get herself involved in some mortal romance just because she couldn’t get what she wanted in the heavenly realm. In this light, FJ in the drama is very immature, but FJ in the book is faithful and maintains her dignity. Similarly, if you understood DH’s characrer in the book, you would know that EVEN if he did reincarnate as a mortal, he would NOT instruct Si Ming to make him an emperor with thousands of concubines - he is a ROCK, remember?! The emperor’s wish was to have someone requite his love, and in both the first book and the drama, BQ comments on how that is so out of character for DH, not knowing that the emperor is actually a mere mortal, not a reincarnation of DH. There are so many beautiful subtleties to pick up in the books. Hope you all get a chance to re-read them so that you don’t carry the confusion of the first drama into watching this new drama (which hopefully stays faithful to the books!).

Read my thorough explanation to linh5000 above. He only went to the mortal realm in the DRAMA. He NEVER left the heavenly realm in the Pillow Book. The drama is written by the scriptwriters and doesn’t follow the Pillow Book.

Actually when the previous drama seemed to change the human realm scenes (different from the novel) and said Donghua really went to the human realm.....some fans still interpreted in this way : it seems interesting why Fengjiu retain her memories as a human while "Donghua" didn't, they viewed it as he didn't get reborn, he just timed his "wake up" with the Emperor's death (while knowing all that happened)....so even his soul wasn't tainted with any...ahem....sex with any woman. Probably still a virgin...haha.

But of course, the above idea seems abit illogical against some details eg Donghua holding the broken arrow part when he woke up.

Wow what kinda fans are they?! That’s a terrible interpretation!!! That would mean FJ was sleeping with some random mortal king. Why can’t people just accept that the drama ignored the setup of the twist, and took liberties with BQ’s POV in the first book? I mean, the whole DHFJ story in the drama was a made-up mishmash of book ideas anyway.

A rumor i read..but most likely true (cos one screenshot show a list of human palace chars)....is they added more scenes and chars to the part of human lifetime...think in the original novel (not the previous drama), Donghua never lived as a human.....but the current drama, they intended to make it like he really have a lifetime there with Fengjiu.

Aw no! I really hope that’s NOT true! After reading the first book and watching the 10MPB drama, it took me FOREVER to move on and read Pillow Book. The reason is this: i didn’t like the storyline of DH reincarnating to the mortal realm as the *ahem* horny little mortal emperor. I’m SUPER possessive of my “man” and i didn’t like the idea of him sleeping with all these concubines. Even though he has no memory of his identity as DH, when he returns, he certainly remembers his mortal realm *ahem* rendevous. So for a long time, i wasn’t interested in reading Pillow Book, UNTIL i found out that a MASSIVE TWIST would happen and nothing in 10MPB is as it SEEMS, and that DH never left the heavely realm... because it is only told in BQ’s POV and the drama followed that reasoning. I really love DHFJ’s POV and book storyline and i can only pray to the drama gods that they don’t mess around with it. This super awesome twist took 2 books to fully set up and have its impact and i was happily blown away! <3 I take the 10MPB drama as a standalone but i don’t want the Pillow Book scriptwriters to take liberties with the original narrative. Stay canon!!!

Oh really? I will do that too, thank you! I kept hearing Hamsters translation was better. I did read both Pillow Books translated by Hamster and enjoyed it. I can’t wait for movie version.

That’s because there were 2 other people who co-translated Pillow Book with Hamster so it was done really well! Pillow Book is my favourite! <3 I don’t know what people are comparing Hamster’s translation of 10MPB to. But i have both Hamster’s and To The Sky Kingdom and there’s no comparison as to the readability. Hamster’s one skips all the Mount Kunlun chapters and has spelling and grammatical mistakes in every sentence. The ONLY thing you should read from Hamster’s is Ye Hua’s Epilogue, which is missing from To The Sky Kingdom. I AM ABSOLUTELY DYING FOR THE PILLOW BOOK DRAMAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is Shao Wan in the first show??

The pestering made me dislike their relationship in the first show.

Were YH/BQ in the second book?

Shao Wan was briefly mentioned at the end of the first book but was not mentioned in the drama. The drama chose to emphasize Mo Yuan’s affections for BQ, but the book actually is not clear as to what he really feels towards BQ, and rather hints of his relationship with Shao wan. YH/BQ are in the second book. You start off with their wedding. They are mostly background characters but Rice Dumpling is FJ’s little sidekick and instigates a lot of her awkward/funny/embarrassing moments with DH. :)

Ooooo YESSS @angelangie I saw this news this morning. I hope YH/Mark Chao and BQ/Yang mi will make an appearance here as well. Please please please make this happen drama gods. A cameo at least. I would take whatever they give me. LOL. That said Dilraba is such a cutie pie, I'm so looking forward to this spinoff/sequel although I haven't read the pillow books yet. I know I'm such a YH/BQ devotee, and I heard they don't appear much in the pillow books so I just skipped them. Lol. But if it is as epic as season 1, I promise I'll go and read the pillow books. Kekeke.

(Don’t worry, no spoilers) You absolutely should read The Pillow Book! I loved DH/FJ sooo much, even more than YH/BQ and that’s a LOT!!! PLEASE DON’T BE fooled by the “Eternal Love” drama because DH/FJ’s love story is very, very different to what was in the drama. Basically, NOTHING in the drama actually happens in The Pillow Book (although the drama did borrow some ideas and scenes). DH properly meets FJ at YH/BQ’s wedding at the beginning of the book. DH chases FJ rather than pushing her away. FJ doesn’t pester him like she did in the drama. Even the “mortal world” sequence in the first book where FJ goes to meet DH’s “mortal incarnation” (which was somewhat portayed in the drama) is given a MASSIVE twist when you realise what *really* happened from DH/FJ’s point of view, rather than BH’s. Like you, after the first book, I thought I wouldn’t be interested in DH/FJ’s story. How VERY WRONG i was because i’m now sooo obsessed with them!!! <3

  18. Sorry, another question. After Ye Hua sacrificed himself to deactivate the Bell, why didn't Bai Qian at least consider giving him her heart's blood to preserve his body (like she did for Mo Yuan)?  Why was that not even a considered option?  What was so different about Ye Hua's state of "death"?  Didn't Mo Yuan "die" too and the disciples were going to give him a funeral?  Why didn't Bai Qian instinctively want to preserve Ye Hua's body, considering that she already did it once for Mo Yuan and luckily she did that!

  19. The novel doesn't describe age-related appearances much, so my questions arise mainly from the drama. Can someone please explain to me how aging works in their immortal world? Why are some people "old" (e.g. The Heavenly Emperor), some people "slightly older" (e.g. Zhe Yan, Lian Song, the fox parents), some people forever at their prime (e.g. Bai Qian, Bai Zhen, Dong Hua) and some people forever "young" (e.g. Mi Gu, fire Qilin)? Why are some of their youthful looks unchanging, while some are portrayed as old people despite being immortals/gods? It seems like it has nothing to do with actual age, status or divinity, but just completely random and convenient to the storyline.
