I know this is quite late and this issue may be no longer interesting but I really have to get my thought out here. In fact I had some RL issue to solve first and only yesterday I got time to really ponder on eps 16. BEWARE this is gonna be a very long post because I'm not good in words. This was also posted on DB.
Eps 16 is very interesting because there are so many layers in the two most prominent conversations between our OTP. I see various opinions about these two, so I think I would just share mine.
1) The breakup conversation
IMO, the only reason he broke up with her is because he wanted to RELEASE her from being his collar. Not because the trust issue (the fact that she wrote the letter and how she told him she trusted him was enough for him), also not for the throne. It was all about protecting her from anyone including himself.
So: ”It seems I must become a dog that kills, a dog that bites its owner and takes over its owner’s home. I will become a rabid wolf dog.”
Yo: “He will be useful if I pull on his collar just right.”
So to Soo: “The king used you to get to me. He will use me to continue bothering you.”
So’s collar has always been Soo because Soo is his greatest weakness. So far he was willing to become Yo’s dog with Soo being his collar because he thought that was the only way for her to be safe. But Eun’s death made him realize how powerless he was and he knew it was just a matter of time before Yo used him to kill other people again, using Soo as his collar. He could see the suffering Eun’s death brought for BOTH the dog and its collar. I love the way he implied to her that it wasn’t just about her getting used to control him, it was also about him getting used to torture her. He realized how painful it had to be for her for seeing him doing something against his will because of her. It worked in such ways that by staying as a dog and its collar, they actually ended up hurting each other. Upon this realization, he knew he had to release himself from that collar, and at the same time release that collar from him. The only way to break the collar from the dog was by breaking up any relationships between them.
General Park: “For the sake of the nation and the royal family, the king must be willing to throw everyone away.”
In the General Park’s and others’ eyes, So had thrown Soo away. But the truth was he had RELEASED HER. This condition is very different compared to King Taejo-Lady Oh and Wook-Soo. King Taejo had all the right reason to marry Lady Oh, but he threw her away for political marriage. Wook also had all the reason to marry Soo but he threw her away for the throne in the time she needed him the most. So was different. So didn’t have the condition where he could be with Soo. He couldn’t be with her because by doing so, he would only keep her as his collar and she would be under constant threat whenever Yo wanted to use her to control So. Knowing this, he would be very selfish if he still kept her. Selfless as he has always been, he decided that if he couldn’t be with her, he would prefer to RELEASE her and let her be safe and happy. It’s a very similar condition with his proposal on eps 12, that he would let her divorce him once they got out of the palace. He always puts her happiness above his own. This was not throwing away like how some people pointed, this was indeed releasing her for her own good.
And the reason why he lied to Soo is explained on these sentences:
Eps 14
So: If you’re not going to come to me, don’t give me hope either. For me, it’s torture.”
Soo: Why don’t you just tell me (the reason for marriage)?
So: Then I would have to ask you to endure again.
So knew very, very well that if he told her his true reason, he would just give her hope and she would wait for him. This condition is very similar with the breaking up over forced marriage on eps 14. He knew she would remain hopeful and endure the painful days waiting for him. But he knew very well how torturing that hope and waiting would be for her. He knew that he couldn’t promise her anything, he already broke his promise for marrying her and taking her out of the palace. He couldn’t stand making her wait for him anymore. Therefore, the only way to make her let go of him, was by lying to her, using her distrust as a reason for breaking up. He wore his mask very well through the whole conversation. But our OTP knew each other too well that Soo knew right away he was lying all the way. That’s why Soo called him a liar, and you can see how he was caught off guard for a second. Then he decided to give that final blow, that ultimate lie: “We promised not to lie to each other.”
Now imagine how excruciating this situation was for So. He had to throw those nasty words on a girl he still loved so much to the point that he sacrificed his own heart for her safety. When he reminded her about their promise not to lie to each other, he knew he was indeed lying himself. Not enough with breaking the promises of marrying her and taking her out of the palace, now he had to break his promise to not lie to each other. And he had to blame her for breaking the promise he knew very well he was breaking himself. We could see from his expression at the tower and how he just physically collapsed there. It was like a mortal blow to him. It took him all his willpower to hurt her and now he completely broke down because there was no turning back anymore. He thought he had lost her forever. (thank you @briseis for your beautiful words, I actually got insight from reading your post on this issue, and I feel the need to quote some of your sentence here).
After 2 years, So was back to the palace, thinking that Soo had to be safe now that she wasn’t his collar anymore. He put his mask very well, not even blinked when Soo walked next to him. But apparently Yo, again, used her as his collar when he squeezed Soo’s hand. It was obvious how he struggled to stand still, in hope that Yo would think she didn’t affect him anymore. In the end it was still too much for him and he was forced to become a dog again, kneeling in front of Yo. The arrow incident just made him realized, as if he needed more confirmation, that her being near him was never safe. In his 2 days in palace, Soo had more danger than what she had had for 2 years. This only made him pushing her away even harder, even if by doing so, he tore his already broken heart to pieces. He went through all the pain alone, it didn't matter as long as she was okay. But apparently she was never okay. She told him her agony for 2 years and made him realized that his plan had actually never worked out. What he thought would liberate her and made her happy turned out to cause her the misery he never intended her to have. That was why he decided to put off his mask and reconcile with her, because again, her happiness is his first priority.
2) The throne conversation
Soo: “What if I asked you to give it (the throne) up?”
So: “I will persuade you until you say it is all right to do it.”
Unlike what some people said, I don’t think that Soo was nagging or testing him when she asked him that question. Soo asked this because she still had the mindset that wanting the throne was a bad thing. She had all people in the palace responsible for that mindset. Wook abandoned her for the throne, Yo killed Moo and Eun for the throne. She even once had a thought that So left her for the throne, so it was reasonable for her to try to persuade him from wanting that bad thing. And I love how So used the word “persuade until you say it’s all right” because it meant he didn’t want to forsake her for the throne. As much as he wanted the throne for all the right reasons, he would not force her to accept his decision. And as much as she wanted him to deny, he wouldn’t give her the sweet lies. He explained to her his reasons instead and gave her new insight that wanting the throne wasn’t always a bad thing. He wanted that when she finally accepted his decision, she would do it because she understood his reasons, not because he forced her to do so.
I put so much faith on So's character consistency and so far he doesn't disappoint me. People said he changed, and yes he did, but in a good way and for every good reason. One thing stays the same though, his love for Soo doesn't waver. I wish it will stay that way till the very end.

(Shout out to @tinniet!!) The BTS of WangSo-WangEun-SoonDeok scene is out!

(And can someone upload it on YT? My YT account just... erm... died)
I KNOW RIGHT!!! DRAMAGOD HAD ANSWERED OUR PRAYER
And I have to say that watching that BTS gives me more overwhelming emotion than watching that scene in the drama, if that's even possible. LJG's acting is on the level that I no longer see in him an actor acting sad scene, I see a real man who broke beyond what he could possibly handle. How could he do that? All those tears, those trembling, those agony were real. I'm actually afraid that the depth he got emotionally absorbed in his role would take toll on his real mood as well. Like he said that in Two Weeks, he got depressed because he got extremely invested on his character. I wish he is better in setting apart his role's feeling from his real feeling now.

(Sorry, I can't stop myself... Something's really wrong with me today. JG's interview broke something inside of me, and now I can't stop mooning over him... so...)
Another post on LJG's acting prowess...
Really, that's more range of emotions than most actors are capable of portraying in THEIR LIFETIME.
(All credit for the gorgeous pictures goes to yayoi_jg)
(Don't stop yourself, I love seeing post like this lol)
I really need the BTS of that scene very badly. Watching that scene is painful but also extremely satisfying because I can see various emotions flashing on LJG;s face way so natural and clean-cut. Oh actually all of his scenes in eps 16 gives me the same feeling. Emotionally struggling Wang So is so delicious.

She's wearing white clothes so is that for a funeral or are is it just like a sleeping gown or something? I mean she is in her bed.. I think
I think yes, she's holding that blood letter in her hand, you can see the white paper with red handwriting on it.
Seems like she is in her sleeping gown because her hair is down.

Really appreciate him posting in english. I just hope it's not being use by those antis to badmouth him again.
He's the only actor that makes me send DM on IG to tell some encouragement words (not that he would read it though among the thousands DM he must be getting now lol). After the interview came out there must be tons of fans, Korean and international, who send him love and support. I'm happy he gets those and I love the way he appreciates his fans by posting this. So much love and respect for this man.
Sidenote: Can I pretend that he did read my DM and it's one of the "pep talk" he was talking about? kekeke~

LOL perhaps, but I prefer to call him Lee Joon Gi because he identifies himself so. Thank you for your information and sorry to cut your post.

The first 2 episodes are very crucial in any drama production because it’s the ‘first impression’ of the drama. If the first 2 episodes are not interesting enough people will lose interest. There was less of LJG appearances, more scenes were given to cast with acting below or just average level (except for KHN). Some people don’t have patience to wait. There were just too many princes introduced at one time and it’s confusing to some. I have a tough time to remember who is who.. Who is 10th, 13th and so on .. (I only remember 8 and 4 – KHN and LGJ) the rest I was still in dazed trying to match the C version with K version prince – and imagine what Korean viewer would feel especially if they don’t have any clue at all.
Sorry to cut your post. But I agree with you so much on this. I notice that the re-edited version contains so much more of LJG's scene than the international one, I notice that even since the very first episode of re-edited version, and they stay very consistent that way until the latest episode (the backhug, longer scar tracing, double kiss in exchange of Jung's scenes, bravo! ), which is why I preferred watching SBS version all the way. That's kinda relieving for me, because it confirms that LJG is well appreciated in Korea, and even SBS realizes the appeal of LJG in Korea and the benefit of having more of his scenes for the sake of higher rating. What I regret is they realized that way too late, they had lost the audience's interest and whatever they did later couldn't compensate for the initial damage they have done. I understand that they wanna attract the international K-pop fanbase by putting so much screentime for the idols but didn't they realize that strategy will cause more harms than benefit in Korean market? They should have made 2 versions since the beginning if they aim for both local and international audience: Korean version with more LJG's scene and international version with more idols' scene.

CMIIW but I always think one of the reasons for low rating of this drama (apart from the editing issue) is because this drama requires the audience to think, or maybe to put it better, to analyze. I may not do enough research to back up this, but based on what I observe in forums and IG, people often don't have enough understanding about the story. I'm not sure what is considered as good drama; is that the one that can gives you all the information so you can enjoy watching it at ease? Because I always find people criticizing this drama for not giving enough information, for the plot holes, for the inconsistency of the character, and else. But actually some of those can be understood if you put some effort to analyze. I always re-watch each episode (both version) at least twice because I try to understand about the story and the character, and when I find some jarring stuffs, I always analyze them because I have my faith on the writer. Reading the analyses in Soompi and DB is also very helpful. At the end, most of the stuffs I find jarring is solved. But how many people are willing to do the same thing? I have a feeling that most people, Korean audience included, prefer to watch something that doesn't require any efforts from their side. This drama requires them to think hard, and they simply dismiss it as a bad and confusing drama. It's sad because this drama actually has so much potential. As the story unfolds, I come to appreciate the casts, the writer, and the editor more and more. If only they make it into 30-40 episodes then this drama will be able to feed the audience all the information and I'm sure the rating will be good.
But back to the definition of good drama though. Is that the one that gives the audience all information needed? or the one that requires the audience to analyze?

Not exactly,
Ratings are live..
Face it.. ML did screw up bad in earlier episodes.. and that was enough for people to watch Moonlight which maintained its pace..
For intrnational - You watch it on online... AND that is the big difference.. maybe back in Korea too online viewership is high..
Exactly my thought. MLSHR did screw up pretty badly in the first 3 episodes, that's why they decided to re-edit the rest to become the SBS version we have nowadays. But it's too late, because another drama MDBC was already going strong and people switched to MDBC and stuck with it. Korean audience might still watch MLSHR but it would always be their 2nd priority, which means they would still watch MDBC on TV and went online to watch MLSHR later. That's why TV rating for MLSHR is doomed but online viewership is high.

i'm sorry to cut your post. yes i agree that it's not his fault the drama get low ratings. i become his fans through this drama. he is perfect. but i don't think the problem is editing. yes it's true for youku viewer and s one tv cable the editing is not good. even for some episodes i had to watch sbs version to get a better and bigger picture about the drama. but i think sbs version quite good in editing. and the rating only related to sbs viewer who watch the drama on tv, not youku and s one tv cable viewer. so i guess there are other reason for this.
For the first 3 episodes they aired the same version with the international version though, and they received heavy criticisms along with the decreasing rating. I remember that we actually got pretty good rating for eps 2, but it just goes downward ever since. I'd still stick on the editing problem, because even here and in Dramabeans, people are commenting about the editing problem on every single episode, particularly the few first episodes. They failed to attract viewers from the beginning, and with MDBC going strong, people just let go of this drama. The first episodes are the key, if they failed to hook the viewers, it would go that way no matter how good the rest of the episodes are.

I think this vote shows us what the reality is like. See the vote? the highest vote here is Baekhyun (16128). I don't hate Baekhyun but I think we agree pretty much that his acting as WE is still lacking. He tried his best but I'd say he still has many things to work up. Is he a better actor compared with the "in" more experienced actor like LJG, SJK, and PBG? No. But if the vote goes on like this, in the end Baekhyun will win the Asian award as best actor for his role as WE
The reality is like that. Fans vote for the actor category but they don't vote it based on one's talent and hardwork as an actor (do they even care?) They do it because they love their idol and that love overshadows the idol's talent and hardwork. It's good for their idol but by doing so, the real talented and hardworking actors suffer.

Woke up and the first thing I got was that kind of article... seriously ruin my mood for the rest of the day... I think WS is the best character LJG has been so far, and seriously it's not about his acting at all. His acting is 100% PERFECT, and some other casts' acting might be lacking in the beginning but they've done better in the recent episodes!! The problem is on the editing, hands up. It's like cooking, you can have the best materials and recipe but if the chef messes up then the dishes will come up messed up as well. LJG is the best material caught up in a bad chef's hand. and I can't stand him taking all the blame just because he is the lead role. Like seriously LJG, it's not about you, it's never about your acting, stop taking the responsibility!!!
MLSHR fans in Soompi, can we do something to show SBS and the casts, particularly LJG about MLSHR effect internationally? Does someone have a connection with Korean fans so we can give our support and make sure that it reaches them? I don't want LJG remembers MLSHR and WS as his failure. Regarding the fans video support, anyone here can give more details how to participate? Thank you so much.

i have been rewatching older episodes. i noticed whenever WS is angry or flabbergasted, corner of his lips tremble. how LJG does that?
actually I notice YH, WH and some other casts (I don't remember exactly) also do that lips corner trembling. But so far LJG's the best, his is most natural and hitting the right point, not less but not too much. I still wonder how they do that though. I tried in front of the mirror and look silly, like why I even tried lol

Hi, What is the reason to have multiple versions (Korean vs Chinese vs International ) of a drama? Thank you.
Actually the Chinese (Youku) and international (One TV) version are the original version. Youku and One TV purchased the drama before it was aired and they have right to broadcast it. For the first 3 episodes, there was no difference between Korean and Youku and One TV. But the editing in the first 3 episodes are really bad that they drew some heavy criticisms from Korean audience. Because of that, they decided to re-edit the following episodes and I must say they really did well. So the re-edited version becomes the Korean version we're seeing on SBS now. The problem is, they can't change the version that has been sold to Youku and One TV, so these two stations still air the original, unedited version which are the Chinese and International version we're having now. From episode 1 to 15 the Chinese and International version are similar, so I have no idea why they have slight differences in episode 16.

The location is in a baekje culture village or something like that, i bet the rental per day is not cheap. And the horses rental? I just notice the horse that LJG ride in Joseon Gunman has a white nose too. The same horse?
Sorry for cutting your post. I notice that the horse that WS killed in eps 1 has a white nose too. Resurrection of the horse? Or maybe WS didn't really kill the horse, maybe what he did to his horse was like what he did to WY on eps 13. He seemed like an animal lover anyway, he said to HS he didn't kill animal for fun kekeke~

This show really does great job in selecting the actor/actress for the younger version of Moo, So, Jimong, SD and WE. Like they really consider the similarity of the facial features. The best will be Jimong's younger version though, even the way he talked was similar to Jimong!! LOL and little So was so cute I wanna squeeze him out and far from evil momma's knife

[Drama 2016] Moon Lovers ❤ Scarlet Heart Ryeo, 달의 연인-보보경심 려 \^0^/ Soompi Kdrama 2016 Winner

Always inspiring reading your post. I don't think I've ever seen a love as selfless as So's love before in any Kdrama. The fact that So is actually the one who was deprived of love the most from all people but he is willing to let the ONLY love he got in his life go for her happiness is totally heartwrenching. I agree that he will eventually release Soo from the palace, because that will be the only promise he can still keep for her.
