The Thin Red Line (saw half of it on Netflix, bought the Criterion edition, and canceled Netflix before I finished)

It's Saving Private Ryan set in the Western hemisphere.

Edit: Tack on Seven Samurai - I think it's a bit overrated. The plot is interesting and i'l give it credit for being a landmark piece of work but other than that, 3 hours of talking. Nothing revealing in the end for me to absorb that I didn't pick up halfway into the movie.
