There’s only one fashion-themed show on the air right now — MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday Cinderella Man — but soon, we’ll have three. KBS and SBS are also following the trend with fashion-themed dramas of their own.

First will be KBS, who will follow the current romantic comedy Accidental Couple with their series Magazine Allo (working title). The plot revolves around an outsider to the glossy fashion-mag biz, who comes in to work at Allo magazine and does her best to survive in the new competitive work culture (so… Devil Wears Prada meets Ugly Betty?) This drama will be a Wednesday-Thursday series and premieres on June 24. The drama will star Kim Haneul.

Meanwhile, SBS’s Style recently announced its lead actors and will cast Lee Jia as an assistant at a fashion magazine. The series is adapted from a popular novel describing itself as the Korean Devil Wears Prada, but it sounds like it also needs to distinguish itself from Magazine Allo.

On the other hand, Cinderella Man is battling plagiarism claims, with another production group claiming copyright infringement for yet another fashion-drama project that was developed under the name Fashion King. Producers of Cinderella Man have come out strong in its rebuttal that no plagiarism was involved.

Based on the news reports, it seems that this may be a case of parallel development more than stolen content; Cinderella Man’s producers, Core Content Media, defends itself by explaining that their accuser LK Production group’s Fashion King was one of several fashion-related series that MBC had considered. Ultimately MBC chose Cinderella Man, and the plot similarities to Fashion King were merely coincidental.

In fact, when LK brought up the plagiarism issue in March, a copyright board’s first stage arbitration meeting ruled, “It’s difficult to call it plagiarism.” Even so, LK is proceeding with legal action even as Cinderella Man is heading into its latter half.

A Core Contents rep said, “Saying that we are infringing copyright because the story is about the Dongdaemun fashion market is like saying it’s plagiarism to use the same instrument to play a different melody.”

The most expensive car is the Maybach of Hallyu star Bae Yong Jun valued 670 million Won (equivalent to USD500,000). The next expensive is a Bentley Arnage of another Hallyu star Kwon Sang Woo valued 670 million Won (equivalent to USD410,000).

The third expensive car is a Bentley Continental of actor Song Seung Hun cost 330 million Won (equivalent to USD250,000). Ranked at 4th and 5th are Mercedes Benz S600 priced 216 million Won (equivalent to USD165,000) of actor Jeong Joon Ho and a Jaguar of actor Kim Seung Woo known to pay 190 million Won (equivalent to USD140,000).

CINDERELLA MAN FIGHTS BACK, SUES FASHION KING

First, fashion-world-centered drama Cinderella Man was accused of plagiarism by the folks behind the proposal for Fashion King. Then Style announced its casting and called itself the Korean Devil Wears Prada. Magazine Allo announced its casting and also made a reference to The Devil Wears Prada. Then Style accused Allo of plagiarism. And now Cinderella Man is suing Fashion King for libel.

After Fashion King producers LK charged Cinderella Man producers Core Contents with copyright infringement, it was deemed in an arbitration meeting that it wasn’t plagiarism. On May 12, in an interview, an LK representative stated that because Cinderella Man deliberately plagiarized, they would insist upon an apology from the writer and production company.

On May 13, Core Contents escalated matters by turning around and suing LK for libel and impeding business, demanding compensation for damages incurred.

What damages, you ask? Core Contents alleges that because of the LK accusations, the Cinderella Man writer experienced “severe emotional distress” and the company was defamed; the charges also caused setbacks in negotiations for selling the drama overseas to China and Southeast Asia.

LK countered that Core Contents is just “noise marketing” and stuck to its claim that their idea, characters, background, and core content (pun!) were stolen. Furthermore, since LK’s company secrets were distributed, they’re the one who suffered business setbacks, not Core Contents. LK has threatened countersuit.
