Synopsis
Eun Jae (Han Chae Young) was a stubborn and head-strong girl who had a passion for cooking. She did not have any interest in going to college and with the help of her hig school friend, Jung Hyun Sung (Lee Chun Hee)ran away to Italy to enroll in a cooking school. Jung Hyun Sung who loved her dearly went along with her. Han Yi-Joon (Jo Hyun Jae) came from a wealthy family. He travelled to Italy looking for his mother and there he ran into Eun Jae, who had also been seeking the same person to learn the secrets to making great pasta. She comforted Yi-Joon, who was distraught over his mother's remarrying, and they ended up making love. Yi Joon left Eun Jae the next morning over some misunderstanding. Eun Jae became pregnant and had no choice but to give up her dream and to return to Korea. 6 years later, Eun Jae was working in low paying restaurant jobs, Yi-Joon atarted to take over the operations of his family's business, and Hyun Sung was working as a chef for one of the restarurants owned by Yi-Joon and managed by Ji Soo Yeon (Hong Soo Hyun). Hyun Sung was good with Eun Jae's son and he was helping out Eun Jae's whole family financially as they had fallen on hard times. Yi-Joon found out that he still had feelings for Eun Jae as they ran into each other when he was looking for a new chef for his restaurant. The dramatic tension unfolds as the four main characters worked out their feelings for each other.

I saw this drama a while back. I like it a lot because it is light and a feel-good drama. Nobody died, the lead characters (Jo Hyun Jae and Han Cha Yong) ended up together, they even have a cute son to make their relationship even better.

The second leads, may not have ended up together, but that's acceptable because how can they suddenly fall in love with each other when they've been in love with other people for so many years already? It wouldn't be logical for them to suddenly fall out of love of Yi Joon (in the case of the second female) and Eun Jae (in case of the second male).

This may not be the best drama out there, but I still like it a lot because it left a good feeling inside me. Besides that I love Jo Hyun Jae's interactions with the boy who played his son. JHJ is totally convincing as the father of a 6-year old boy who didn't know he had a 6-yr old son, but is trying to build a relationship with him.

If you're a drama watcher who wants something light, something to make you feel good, this is the drama for you.

Chae Young is too young for Jo Hyun Jae, but I think they pulled it off here..I watched the OY music videos!!!

Both JHJ and HCY were born in 1980, JHJ on May 9, while HCY on Sept 13. So yes, JHJ is actually older than HCY by a few months. In looks, well, blame that on the styling done on JHJ in this drama. His fashion and hair style in the drama leaves a lot to be desired.

I love his hair in the beginning of the drama, while they were in Italy - very cute, very young. No wonder Eun Jae (HCY) fell for him after knowing him for 1 day only. With a Han Yi Joon (JHJ) in the picture, how can Lee Chun Hee's character make a dent in Eun Jae's heart? But fast forward 6 years later the hair was brushed up to make him look 6 years older. And his clothes, mama mia!!! They look 1 size bigger on JHJ's body and the colors@#$@@@! How can they make him wear fuschia pink (?) during a business meeting???? But despite the tacky hairstyle and tacky clothes, JHJ still managed to look handsome. :rolleyes::D:lol:

I finished this drama in 2 days.

An enjoyable drama although I wish JHJ and HCY had better chemistry and more romantic scenes together. She snapped at him too much; I wanted her to be nicer to him!

I think, Eun Jae snapping at Han Yi Joon a lot is her defense mechanism. When a girl feels too much for a guy, and the girl feels that the guy doesn't return her feelings, the tendency is for the girl to get defensive so as to hide her real feelings for the guy. In the first part of the drama, Han Yi Joon didn't really know that he has feelings for Eun Jae. His feelings developed as the eps progressed but he's not very good at showing it to Eun Jae initially. But he did learn. He came a long way from being an arrogant jerk to being a jerk in love :lol::lol:

ahh I just finished watching episode 2... i love jhj's character in this drama so much!!! i think this character suits him more than his role at seo dong yoh. hehe, what do you guys think? ^_^ (for those of you guys who are watching SDY) XD

I beg to disagree. Although I love JHJ in this drama, JHJ in SDY is a different level entirely. Han Yi Joon is a very light character, while Jang/Seo Dong/Prince Mu/King MU is a challenging and mulit-layered character that JHJ portrayed so excellently.

Between Han Yi Joon and Seo Dong/Jang (JHJ's character in SEo Dong Yo) = i'd choose Seo Dong/Jang anytime, everytime.

Between Han Yi Joon and Andrea (JHJ's character in Love Letter) = i'd choose Andrea anytime, everytime

But if forced to choose between Andrea and Seo Dong/Jang = i won't be able to make a choice because i love both JHJ characters to pieces. :):P

I don't know how long this will be posted on veoh so watch it while you can. BTW, you can also download this but you have to download veohTV first. I have done this already, and I was able to copy to a CD (yes, a CD not a DVD. the vid is small enough that it can be copied easily to a CD, no need to burn to a DVD) so I can watch it whenever I feel like watching a light-hearted JHJ. Episode 1 recaps

Ep 1 starts with a cooking contest (with instant noodles as the main ingredient) participated in by Cha Eun Jae (Han Chae Young) and her good friend Jung Hyun Sung (Lee Chun Hee). The pair wins, and the prize - a truckload of instant noodles.

Eun Jae (EJ) happily arrives home with the truckload of instant noodles, very proud of her achievement. However, her mom, Mrs. Park, is not very happy with what she has done. She loudly berates her, for doing things not related to studying. Mrs. Park wants EJ to go to college, but EJ is bent on becoming a cook. EJ's father, Mr. Cha, tries to intercede for EJ, Mrs. Park shouts him down, so out comes EJ's sister, Soo Jae (SJ), from her room. Apparently SJ is studying, but because of the commotion over EJ, she can't concentrate on her studies and would rather study outside their home. Mrs. Park intimadates SJ into returning to her room. SJ grumbles, blaming EJ for everything, but follows Mrs. Park.

Mrs. Park then brings EJ to a dormitory academy (boarding school?) so she can do a crash course to help her pass a college entrance exam. Her friend, Hyun Sung (HS) visits her in the dormitory. In whispers they talk about her passport and plane ticket. But they worry on how she could escape. When visiting time is over, EJ makes a run for it and HS helps her.

EJ drops by her home to get her clothes and to leave a message for her parents "Mom and Dad, I will come back as a successful person. You must take care of yourselves, your daughter, Eun Jae. Goodbye!"

At the airport, before boarding the plane, EJ calls her mom to say goodbye. Mrs. Park is again mad at her daughter for wasting time calling and talking to her when she should be studying. Mrs. Park is busy working (driving a heavy machine in a construction site) so stops talking to her daughter. When Mrs. Park comes home and sees EJ's note she got mad again!

In the plane, while EJ is eating, HS appears beside her. She tells him to get off the plane, HS can't because the plane is already on the air (haha, funny scene!). He is the needle, following the thread (EJ). He is going to the same cooking school where EJ is going.

Next scene, JHJ makes an appearance for the first time as a serious Business Management student at Harvard in Boston Massachusetts. When he arrives at his place, we see his apartment to be well-organized. He puts his book where he took it and blows dusts off from the books (hehehe, hints of an obssessive-compulsive personality). While fixing his things he listens to recorded calls on his telephone. He receives a call from a Mr. Kang, telling him that he found Yoon Hee-jin's place. That stops him, he seems bothered by the information relayed, he thinks things for a while then, coming to a decision, eagerly calls Mr. Kang to ask where he can find Yoon Hee-jin.

Next scene is in Vicenza, Italy where EJ and HS are now studying in a cooking school. EJ brings a pot of pepper paste to the school and experiments with it to create a pasta sauce.

Next scene, another character is introduced, a woman by the name Hong Soo Hyun (SH). She is talking to one of the chef of the school where EJ and HS are studying.

Chef:Cooking is an art, a creation. Creativity is the key in Vicenza Cooking School. Beginner class students learn to develop their creativity.

HS: Ma'am, what kind of education will our staff receive?

Chef: There are no exceptions. Everybody starts from the beginning.

HS: Dae Young Group is more interested in techinical collaboration.

Chef: Food is not a technique. It's a spirit.

Note: I decided to highlight this conversation because this is the spirit behind the character of EJ. She loves to cook, but more than loving cooking, she wants to be a creative cook. Someone who will not just follow techiniques and methods, but someone who will set her own techniques to improve herself.

Their talk is interrupted by a strange smell coming from the classroom. The chef/instructor enters the room and sees EJ mixing a smelly concoction. The chef/instructor didn't like the smell of the sauce and when she tasted it, she finds it too hot. As a challenge to EJ she told her to make something she can eat for her final evaluation.

In the next scene, EJ and HS are talking about a lady who created a pasta sauce that wasn't hot. EJ is wondering what she did wrong when SH arrived to inform them of a full scholarship to a regular course that will be offered to whoever passes the final evaluation in the short course. SH also informed them that the Dae Young Group (DYG) will pay the tuition and allowance. If they fail the final evaluation, they will have to go back to South Korea. Condition of the scholarship - they will have to work for DYG after they graduate.

Note - from this conversation I assume that the cooking competition in which EJ and HS won was sponsored by the DYG. The conversation implies that the short cooking course in Italy is part of the prize that EJ and HS won (together with the truckload of instant noodles). These details were not made clear earlier in the ep.

The DYG scholarship spurs EJ to do better in the final evaluation. She decides to go to Venezia (another place in Italy) to look for the lady who cooked the pasta sauce (pepper paste pasta) EJ is trying to copy. HS reminds her that she is supposed to go back to South Korea after the beginner's course. She replies that it was because she didn't have money, but if she gets the scholarship she will have money to continue her studies in Italy. HS tries to dissuade her from going to Venezia, but EJ is stubborn and once she makes up her mind, nothing can stop her.

Next scene is of Han Yi Joon (JHJ, YJ) travelling inside a train. He is very quite (and very handsome :) ), he looks at a sketch of a young boy. He looks at it sadly.

EJ and HS arrive at the train station, in a hurry. EJ notices her shoelace is unlaced, she hands over her purse to HS and tries to fix her shoelace. She couldn't so HS fixes it for her. I don't like this part - a grown woman can't even fix her shoelace? Is it to show the viewers how caring HS is towards EJ? That he would do everything for her just to help her along? I don't see the need for this scene because this fact about their relationship has already been established in the earlier scenes.

Anyway, EJ boards the train, but forgot her purse which she handed to HS earlier. HS tries to follow her, but the train is already moving very fast. While HS is running after the train, we see YJ seated inside the train looking sad and pensive - meaning EJ boarded the same train YJ is on.

EJ walks down the aisle of the train, passes by YJ seat, takes a seat, drinks the soda by a previous passenger (a lucky person always has good fortune, she tells herself, haha), puts up her legs on the table in front of her, burps, looks behind her and sees YJ. She asks him if he's Korean, he doesn't reply, just looks at her and then snobs her (haha, JHJ is the cutest snob ever!!! :D ). EJ takes the snob graciously. Ticket inspector arrives checking the passengers' tickets. EJ's ticket is in her purse which she left with HS.

She tries to explain to the inspector her problem, but because of her nervousness she wasn't able to make herself understood by the Italian inspector. He asks her to stand up and go with him. EJ approaches YJ, asks him in English if he speaks Italian. YJ answers arrogantly in Korean "He is telling you to follow him. Go! (with an arrogant jerk of his head). And then he goes back to his quiet contemplation of the countryside. I love this scene so much - there is not much dialogue here for JHJ and yet he was able to convey the arrogance of Han Yi Joon with just a certain look in his eyes, a jerk of his head and his unsmiling countenance.

Next scene, EJ is shown eating pizza with the elderly ticket inspector in the train's restaurant. YJ goes to the restaurant, orders a drink for himself and sees EJ eating with the inspector. We can only assume what conclusion he made with that scene ;). As he sat down he sees crumbs on his table, so he wipes it away with a paper napkin (he really is OC over cleanliness!!!). EJ sees him being OC about the crumbs on his table, a glint enters her eyes, YJ's drink arrives, EJ starts to choke, she stands up to go to the restroom and bumps the hand of the waiter who is still holding YJ's coffee. The coffee spills on YJ's clothes (atta girl, EJ, you got your revenge there!!). As EJ steps out of the restroom, YJ is walking down the aisle and they meet. EJ sees the stain on his shirt, YJ just scowled at her and bumps her aside to get through.

EJ calls him back to reprimand her on his earlier behavior, asking him how he can ignore a person asking for his help. YJ just looks at her while she rants and then turns his back on her without a word when she finishes. I like this scene too, JHJ is so effective as an arrogant man, and HCY acted her part so well too she may find his attitude not to her liking, but shes still very friendly.

In Venezia, EJ hears YJ asking a man if he knows the way to Pontelaphio. Thats where she is going too. At first she rejected the idea of helping him because hes such a jerk, but her good nature made her reconsider her decision, also she wants to teach him a lesson in kindness (haha). She approached YJ and offered to guide him to Pontelaphio since the streets are quite confusing. She walks away, and YJ walks too. She felt smug when she saw him, thinking that he is following her. But he overtook her and approached a boatman (taxi), whose services he contracted to take him to Pontelaphio. He didnt even offer EJ a ride in the taxi!!! What a jerk!!! EJ is so disgusted with him but had no choice but to walk to Pontelaphio because she has no money (poor girl)!!!

EJ thought shed get to Pontelaphio first but the street confused her. YJ on the otherhand, had some little trouble locating the place he is looking for. Arriving at his destination, which is a small convenience store, with some trepidation he entered the place. No one is around, he is undecided on what to do next when he heard a door open behind him. With a mixture of nervousness and excitement he faced the source of the sound and saw a Caucasian woman. His nervousness left him. Meanwhile, EJ is still walking (tired and thirsty) when she finally finds the place she is looking for. Eh, its the same place YJ entered a few minutes ago!!!

Inside the store, YJ and the Caucasian woman are having a hard time understanding each other. She cant understand English and he can understand Italian. As EJ enters the store, she sees YJ, she pushes him aside and talks in Italian to the woman. She asks the woman if Yoon Hee-jin is around, the woman tells her that the Korean woman has moved out. Repeating that in Korean, YJ hears that the woman he is looking for has already moved out. YJ asks EJ when Mrs. Yoon moved out, EJ asks the store owner 2 weeks ago. EJ tells YJ 2 weeks, then he asks EJ where Mrs. Yoon went. EJ asks the storeowner where Mrs. Yoon moved to, storeowner answered she doesnt know. EJ was about to tell him the storeowners response when she finally realized that YJ has finally condescended to talk to her directly (hahaha, YJ is so tricky, and EJ is so easily tricked).

But before EJ could comment on his behaviour, YJ asks her if shes sure thats what the storeowner said, that she just didnt misunderstand the reply. To which she replied boastfully that her Italian is very good. Telling him that if he doesnt trust her to ask the storeowner himself. EJ walks out of the store, YJ follows. They both take a seat outside the store, but different tables. EJ approaches YJ, and suggests that they join forces since they are looking for the same person. Her terms Ill help you find her but you have to pay me 50Euros. YJ listens, but instead of accepting her offer, questions her if she even knows what helping each other means. She lowers her fee to 40Euros, challenging him that if he doesnt like her help, then thats fine with her. His reply I dont want it (her help, that is).

EJ changes her tone to begging, but YJ ignores her and whips out his cellphone to call a friend Soo Hyun (the DYG lady that EJ and HS talked to earlier in the ep). SH is surprised and happy to hear that YJ is in Italy. They make plans to meet at St. Madoc Square. Meanwhile, YJ orders a drink, but didnt even offer to buy EJ one (such a jerk!).

Meanwhile, SH is tasting some wine while talking to somebody on the phone. She tells the other party that she is going to see YJ. The person she is talking to is another woman Yi Kyung, who happens to be YJs older sister. YK is very surprised to find out the YJ is in Italy. SH tells her that YJ is in Italy to look for someone and asked her help to locate the person. YK instructs SH to stop YJ from meeting the person he came to Italy for.

YJ buys a new coat and leaves his old coat behind in the store (he is that rich, he just leaves his used clothing if it would burden him), while EJ is walking around thirsty and tired (awww, poor girl!). Meanwhile, HS has finally arrived in Venezia and is now looking for EJ. He passes YJ along a bridge but since they dont know each other, there is no reason for them to stop and talk to each other. HS enters the same store EJ and YJ went to earlier.

In the meantime, EJ located another store owned by another Korean. She went to that store with Mrs. Yoon 5 months ago. She asked the storeowner if he knows where Mrs. Yoon has moved to. YJ arrives in St. Madoc Square where he is supposed to meet SH, he sees SH who is busy on the phone. He was about to approach her when he heard her say to the other person on the line that he hasnt arrived yet and she will try to hold him until the other person arrives. YJ makes the quick decision to just leave without approaching SH. EJ sees him having found out that Mrs. Yoon has moved to the place where EJ herself resides.

EJ approaches YJ and in a taunting voice asks him if he has found Mrs. Yoon yet. YJ ignores her, and was about to walk away when she said that she has found Mrs. Yoon. But when he asked her where Mrs. Yoon is, she refused to say, causing YJ to lose his temper. He asks her in a loud voice where Mrs. Yoon is, SH hears him and calls out to him. He looks at SH, but knowing her duplicity he ignores her and drags EJ away from SH. SH tries to follow but she loses her balance causing injury to her legs. HS arrives, sees SH, helps her.

YJ continued to drag EJ until he finds a place where they can talk privately. He finally agrees to her earlier suggestion to help each other, but this time EJ, maybe sensing her advantage, refused him. He gives her 300Euros, she is tempted. She asked him why he is so desperate to find Mrs. Yoon, YJ refuses to answer. EJ thought that he is also after her pasta recipe (she has such a one-track mind!), to which gave her an odd look as if to ask if she is crazy (hehe). He tells her its none of her business, all he needs from her is the location of Mrs. Yoon. EJ returns his money, because he refuses to answer. Calling him weirdo (EJ is such a funny lady!!)

She keeps asking him many questions, suspecting him of some wrongdoing, until finally, YJ in exasperation tells her that he doesnt have time for games. EJ walks away, YJ follows her, telling her to stop. EJ stops but still didnt give the information he needs. She was about to walk away again, when YJ gives in. He tells her, reluctantly, that Mrs. Yoon is his mother. That stops EJ, she faces him and asks him what did he say. He is so angry with her for forcing him to reveal his reasons that he shouted at her that Mrs. Yoon is his mother. EJ refuses to believe him, because it doesnt make sense to her that a son doesnt know where to find his mother. YJ finally confesses that his mother left him when he was 7 years old, asking EJ if that finally made sense.

Meanwhile, SH and HS are together. HS tells SH that EJ is looking for Mrs. Yoon to learn how to make the pepper paste pasta, which EJ plans to make for her final evaluation.

YJ and EJ are on the train together. EJ tries to talk to him, but he faces away from her. His cellphone rings, he didnt answer, instead he removed the battery (or did he destroy it?) angrily, and to stop any of EJs attempts at conversation he pretended to sleep. EJ asks herself why hes angry (I think hes angry at SHs betrayal of his trust, and that he was forced to reveal his reasons to EJ); why she cares that hes angry; speculates that hes adopted; assumes that the reason for his bad temper is that he didnt receive enough love from his mother. Then she heard the announcement on the train, I cant understand what was being announced but it seems that took the wrong train (OMG, EJ, what a scatterbrain you can be at times!!!). YJ is not talking but he is obviously pissed at her mistake.

EJ explains that she thought that the train is going to Vicenza, to which YJ replied, in an exasperated voice, if she at least knows where they were. Meanwhile, HS and SH tracked down the store where they can get information as to Mrs. Yoons whereabouts, but the owner is not around and will be back at around 6p.m. So the 2 couples are in 2 different parts of Italy, playing a waiting game.

EJ finds out that the train workers are on strike, thus no trains will be leaving the station anytime soon. EJ tries to soften the blow but YJ is not buying it, so she has to tell him the truth. EJ on foot again, trying to find a way for them to get to Vicenza, and all the while, YJ is moodily waiting for her at the train station. Gosh, I really pity EJ here, she has to cater to YJs needs, and at the same time grin and bear with his moody personality. Allthough, I do understand YJs exasperation with her because its her fault that they got stranded in the wrong place. JHJ is really very good in portraying the arrogant jerk Han Yi Joon he is arrogant, bad-tempered, sarcastic, but still so adorable.

After running around for quite a while, EJ is forced to admit to YJ that she couldnt find any other means to get them to Vicenza. She apologizes to him for her mistake. Saying if it werent for her he would already be on his way to see his mother. This seem to melt YJ a little, I think because shes more concerned about him not seeing his mother right away than her not getting the recipe she needs. Then her stomach makes a rumbling sound, YJ smiles a little. Gets up and tells her to follow him (in that arrogant way of his, expecting her to follow his every command, haha). She follows him to a restaurant, and this time he orders for the 2 of them. Signs that YJs resistance is slowly melting away.

EJ hungrily forks her spaghetti to her mouth, while YJ watches her. She tells him to eat, instructs him to turn the fork to the right for good luck. He smiles a little again. She tells him that he has the same eyes as his mother big and sad eyes that stops him. She tells him that Mrs. Yoon smiles often, but she doesnt know if they have the same smile since he doesnt smile at all. YJ asks her if his mother smile often (aww the way he asked this question really tugged at my heart, he looked so needy of a mothers love), and EJ says yes, especially when she making pasta. That seems to make YJ more sad. Ej finally reveals to him why she is looking for Mrs. Yoon. From behind her, EJ hears 2 men talking that they are on their way to Vicenza. They are loading stuff on the back of a truck, EJ approaches them and hitches a ride with them.

YJ and EJ are seated at the back of the truck, YJ keeps dusting off his coat (haha, such an OC). EJ tells him that theyll be in Vicenza in 30 minutes, YJ replies that they cant be sure until they have arrived (so funny, theyve just met but YJ already knows not to trust EJs pronouncements). EJ asks him what hes going to do when he sees his mom. He replied that hell ask her why he left him; if studying art is more important than her child; and if shes happy now. YJs expression while saying these things is a mixture of bitterness for being left behind, accusation and longing for his mother. This makes EJ sad, but their conversation is interrupted by the siren from a police car. The truck stops, the truck driver and his companion run away, leaving YJ and EJ to face the police. The episode ended with the police pointing guns at them and they had no choice but to raise their hand in the air!!!

Comments:

Ep 1 is very fast paced, laying out the story and dynamics among the various characters right at the outset:

- EJ is a young woman, seemingly carefree and independent, but when it comes to cooking she has a passion for it that nothing (not even her family) can ever douse. She can be a scatterbrain sometimes but she makes up for it by being very kind and friendly.

- The close friendship between EJ and HS (they've been friends for 10 years already), and that HS will do anything and everything to make EJ happy. EJ sees HS as her best friend, but HS sees EJ in a different light a romantic light.

- EJ's mom, Mrs. Park, is the typical Asian parent who wants her children to have a higher education, thinking that it would bring success to her kids. But in one way she is not the typical mom because she is the breadwinner of the family, driving heavy machine in a construction site to support her family.

- EJ's dad, is not your typical Asian dad - lazy, no ambition, submissive to his wife, he is the one who stays at home while his wife works in the construction site. He spends his days sleeping and putting eyes on stuffed toys.

- EJ's younger sister, SJ, is the studious of the two sisters. She looks down on her older sister who doesn't seem to have any direction in life.

- Han Yi Joon is rich, good-looking, arrogant, obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness, not very friendly, but the sadness in his eyes hides a pain. His mother left him when he was only 7 years old.

- SY elegant, looks rich, obviously educated, she is excited at the thought of seeing Yi Joon, but follows his sisters instructions to the letter even if it run counters to what YJ wants.
