Former agent Cha Seung-won pursues The Tyrant

by solstices

Promotional materials are out for Disney+’s upcoming sci-fi thriller The Tyrant, setting its tone with gritty altercations and intense confrontations. A spin-off of the Witch movie series, the drama — initially planned as a movie, and later expanded to four episodes in the editing room — delves into the opposite perspective, centering around the operations of the bioweapon researchers.

On a rainy night, a deliberate head-on collision derails an important delivery. Amidst the wreckage, a shrouded figure shoots everyone else dead, having obtained what they came for. With that, the last sample of the Tyrant Program has been stolen.

What exactly does that sample contain? As the U.S. intelligence agent Paul — played by Kim Kang-woo (Wonderful World) — explains, the Tyrant Program has been creating a drug to develop a superhuman gene. After catching wind of this covert initiative, the U.S. intelligence agency called for the program to be shut down, alongside the relinquishing of all research material.

Needless to say, such unilateral orders did not sit well with the Tyrant Program’s Director Choi — played by Kim Sun-ho (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) — who, presumably, sought to secretly reclaim the sample. Judging by his look of consternation in the face of Paul’s English swearing, though, perhaps not everything has gone according to plan.

Enter Cha Seung-won (Our Blues) as the former agent Im Sang, whose mission is to eliminate any opposition to the Tyrant Project. Sang has no qualms getting his hands dirty to clean up after the project, as evidenced by his eerily unsettling grin while torturing information out of a man. Yet Sang knows a tall task when he sees one. “What were you thinking, creating a virus that you can’t control?” Sang drawls, while Director Choi’s expression remains stony.

Will the virus be obtained, or eradicated? “If it’s that child, she will be enough,” an unknown lady narrates, as Jo Yoon-soo (The Interest of Love) gazes at her own reflection. She’s Ja-kyung, the technician tasked to seize the last Tyrant Project sample, and she cocks a gun with ease. Amidst relentless car chases and explosive gunfights, someone’s footstep easily cracks the wall of a building — suggesting the superhuman mutation has already taken hold. The teaser closes on Director Choi’s self-satisfied smile: “The Tyrant is ours.”

Helmed by filmmaker Park Hoon-jung (The Childe) on both the writing and directing fronts, The Tyrant is slated for an August 14 release.

On July 15, press conference was held for the upcoming Disney+ original series The Tyrant. The event was attended by director Park Hoon Jung, along with actors Cha Seung WonKim Seon HoJo Yoon Soo and Kim Kang Woo.

The Tyrant is a sci-fi action drama about people who gather for different purposes chasing each other after the last sample of the Tyrant Program disappears in an accident.

The Tyrant marks director Park's debut in K-dramas. At the press conference, he expressed his respect for drama makers, saying, "It was my first time working on a non-film project. It was tough. Perhaps because it was my first time, it was difficult, and I respect those who make dramas."

Talking about the K-drama, he revealed an interesting fact: "It's an extension of The Witch [movie] series I've directed. It's a story [set] in the same, [but] bigger, universe. You can see it as the story of people and forces at opposite ends."

Actor Cha Seung Won commented, "The Witch is the east, and The Tyrant is the west. They will converge someday," adding, "While they share the universe, it's a different story. There's ample opportunity for the two to converge."

Director Park agreed, saying, "Cha Seung Won explained it very well. That's right. It's a work we thought about and prepared for from the beginning. Perhaps that's why there are many things fans can infer when they watch."

d0WRkz_2f.png

The Tyrant features renowned actors from the Korean cinema industry such as Cha Seung Won, Kim Seon Ho, Jo Yoon Soo and Kim Kang Woo.

Cha Seung Won takes on the role of Lim Sang, who tries to remove obstacles related to the Tyrant Program. The actor said, "I am a huge fan of The Witch. I think the director's greatest strength is that he doesn't hesitate when shooting genre works like action and thrillers. The characters are also very intense."

E5QYj5_2f.png

Kim Seon Ho plays Director Choi, who has been secretly operating the program. He struggles to protect the program from outside forces amid the crisis of the last sample disappearing. The actor said, "I was excited to take on the role of Director Choi because he felt different from my previous characters." "He's a character who remains calm in any situation. Because he is driven by his beliefs, I thought a lot about what choices he would make and what [course of] action he would take," and raised expectations by saying, "When the drama is released, you'll see a different side of me [as an actor, never seen before]."

Spoiler

Kim Kang Woo plays Paul, who tries to shut down the Tyrant Program and steal the sample. The actor commented, "Paul is a foreign intelligence agent. After learning that the Tyrant Program was created in Korea, he infiltrates the country to shut it down."

He added, "Paul is very cruel [like he is devoid of] blood and tears. He's Korean by blood, but his nationality is American. He can be seen as a cocky, annoying black-haired foreigner with a sense of superiority."

Spoiler

QJPdQ7_2f.png

Jo Yoon Soo plays Ja Kyung, a technician tasked with stealing the sample of the Tyrant Program. She said, "I have been a fan of director Park Hoon Jung. I consider it the luckiest thing in my life to play Ja Kyung."

It is reported that Cha Seung Won and Jo Yoon Soo underwent intense training for posture enhancement and deliver realistic action scenes.

Jo Yoon Soo said, "I received martial arts training and PT classes for a month and a half. There were many action scenes, so after one scene ended, I [would start] preparing for the next one. I built strength and learned how to coordinate action scenes."

She added, "I also learned how to handle guns and knives. Since Ja Kyung is a rough character, I tried to portray the action scenes in a beastly and raw manner."

A four-way race begins for Disney+’s The Tyrant

by lovepark

The promotions are ramping up for Disney+’s sci-fi thriller The Tyrant. A spin-off of The Witch movie series, original director and writer Park Hoon-jung (The Childe) returns with a four-part drama that explores the other side of this bioweapon war.

The latest teaser opens with Kim Sun-ho (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) as Tyrant Program Director Choi. Their research facility has been infiltrated recently, and apparently, not everything was destroyed before these uninvited guests entered. Specifically, a sample from one of their human weapon projects was kept, and now, it’s missing. Thus, the race to retrieve it begins.

Director Choi stands as the one wishing to protect, and he vows to stop them all from taking anything from him. He will not let anyone else have the tyrant, and Director Choi will resort to violence in order to keep what he deems is his.

In opposition to the director is Cha Seung-won (Our Blues) as former agent Im Sang. Underneath his calm demeanor is a figure out to eliminate in cold blood, and just like his foes, Im Sang will eradicate anything in his path without hesitation.

Then there is the one aiming to steal, U.S. agent Paul played by Kim Kang-woo (Wonderful World). He jokingly crows about killing everyone and then taking it for themselves since he believes Korea does not have the skills to handle it.

Lastly, Jo Yoon-soo (The Interest of Love) joins the hunt as Ja-kyung, the chaser. As she swerves her car and hits something — or someone — she turns to the camera and asks if they’re looking for her.

Four individuals, each with their own objective, all after one thing. In a battle where the winner takes all, who will gain control in the end? Dropping all four episodes at once, Disney+’s The Tyrant premieres August 14.
