Kwak Sun Young Plays a Passionate Detective in "Crash"

Actress Kwak Sun Young takes on the challenge of action acting in Crash.

In the K-drama, the actress plays the role of Min So Hee, the chief of TCI who will do anything to solve a case. 

Expressing her excitement, she said, "The script was really interesting," adding, "Especially, the line 'Grabbing the steering wheel instead of a knife' left a strong impression on me." The Hospital Playlist actress remarked, "I was surprised to learn that accidents caused by cars, which are usually thought of as a means of transportation, are more numerous and diverse than I thought."

Noting the significance of the drama's theme and message, Kwak Sun Young revealed the reason for choosing the project: "[Imagining] the TCI team tracking down villains on the road and capturing them made me feel exhilarated to the point where I thought, 'I definitely want to try this.'"

Min So Hee is a character who possesses all the qualifications and skills required for the job of a detective, such as martial arts and exceptional driving skills. Therefore, Kwak Sun Young had to acquire the necessary action skills for her drama character.

 

 

Contrary to the expectations of it being challenging for someone going to the action school for the first time since her debut, Kwak Sun Young said her experience was "exciting and enjoyable." She continued, "Of course, I had concerns about [how I would manage to] get it all together during the actual shooting, but thanks to the good planning by the martial arts director and the cooperation of the martial arts team, there weren't any major difficulties."

Commenting about her character, the actress said, "Min So Hee is not only skilled but also deeply committed to justice and has a lot of integrity. She never bends in the face of injustice but also knows how to handle crises flexibly," said Kwak Sun Young.

Inviting viewers to tune in to the drama, the actress said, "I hope viewers can feel and enjoy all the passion and effort the TCI team has put into solving traffic crimes". She concluded by saying, "From scorching summers to chilly winters, everyone worked really hard. I hope viewers will watch attentively how the members of TCI come together to solve various traffic crime incidents."

ENA has released new stills of their upcoming drama “Crash”!

“Crash” is a crime investigation drama about a Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) team that tracks crimes that occur on the road.

In this drama, Heo Sung Tae will finally portray a character that is a team leader who formed the TCI team out of analysis of a lack of system in combating traffic crimes. A veteran detective in the violent crimes division, Jung Chae Man is a compassionate leader who takes care of his fellows and is able to see the whole picture in complex scenarios.

In these stills, Heo Sung Tae appears with a seemingly more relaxed look compared to the characters he played in previous projects. Heo Sung Tae commented that this new project is a challenge for him and that he will show a new side of himself through this.

Heo Sung Tae added that in order to portray the character more realistically, he decided to not put on any makeup and to use the Gyeongsang Province dialect in place of standard Korean, which will draw more viewers’ attention and anticipation.

Actor Heo Sung Tae sheds his villain image and returns to the small screen as a passionate detective driven by justice in Crash. 

The actor takes on the role of Jung Chae Man, the team leader of the Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) squad, who formed the team by handpicking each member, each of whom he considers a hidden gem, and serves as a supportive leader, aiding his team members in developing their skills. 

Heo Sung Tae described his character as the linchpin of the team, who takes care of the team members, knows how to draw the big picture, and is a leader who values justice.

 

 

 

Having portrayed villain roles in the past, Heo Sung Tae expressed that he saw this role as a challenge. The one who inspired this challenge was director Park Joon Woo. The actor said, "The time we spent shooting together was really great. When such a great director said he thinks that I, who has played many villain roles, can play the role of Jung Chae Man well, there is no reason not to do it." 

The actor pointed out that Jung Chae Man's charm lies in his silliness. Moreover, Jung Chae Man's hobby of quoting Chinese idioms and ancient poems, with Heo Sung Tae's comic acting added, is expected to bring comic relief in Crash. 

 

 

Heo Sung Tae also commented on the team, stating, "The team's synergy is amazing. We couldn't be more united as a team."

He continued, "I was fascinated by actor Lee Min Ki's cool and unpretentious demeanor. Any actor will find it easy to collaborate with Kwak Sun Young. She's a truly talented actress. Actor Lee Ho Chul, with whom I've worked for the fourth time in the same production, was very amiable, and actress Choi Moon Hee, the youngest, actively contributed as the mood maker on set, so I'm grateful to her for that."

Heo Sung Tae's wish is for Crash to be watched by many people. He said, "When I first received the script, I found it fascinating that it handled such a heavy issue easily."

He revealed the reason for choosing the drama, saying, "I thought it [traffic crime] was something many people should be aware of," and didn't forget to urge people to tune in, adding, "It's a drama full of joys and sorrows, so please look forward to it."

Upcoming drama “Crash” has released a new teaser!

“Crash” is a crime investigation drama about a Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) team that tracks crimes that occur on the road.

Lee Min Ki will play rational individualist Cha Yeon Ho, the new head of the Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) team, who graduated from KAIST. Kwak Sun Young will star as Min So Hee, the ace of the TCI team, who possesses incredible martial arts and driving skills along with keen judgment and a warm heart. Heo Sung Tae will portray Jung Chae Man, a compassionate and veteran team leader who formed the TCI team out of analysis of a lack of system in combating traffic crimes.

The new teaser highlights various comical scenes demonstrating the peculiarities of each character. Cha Yeon Ho, a KAIST graduate who would be better off somewhere else, defies everyone’s expectations of him as a flawless person by portraying a rather awkward but a much more humane personality. Contrary to his clean-cut and strong appearance, he gets easily flipped over by Min So Hee, who asks him, “How do you want to be a police if you are so fragile?” Min So Hee, on the other hand, portrays a tough and brave police who is fearless, including her reckless but impeccable driving skills.

Lee Min Ki will play rational individualist Cha Yeon Ho, a KAIST graduate who recently joined the TCI team. Kwak Sun Young will star as Min So Hee, the ace of the TCI team, who possesses incredible martial arts and driving skills along with keen judgment and a warm heart.

The two characters first meet when Yeon Ho worked as an insurance investigator, during which both of them handled the same incident. Later, as Cha Yeon Ho joins the TCI team, Min So Hee guides him through his initial settling-down phase, gradually fostering camaraderie between them.

What’s particularly interesting about their relationship is their contrasting characteristics. Despite impeccable qualifications, including his education, experiences, and certifications, Cha Yeon Ho struggles with social skills and reading the room. He also lacks physical strength, making Min So Hee step in and personally teach him jujutsu. As apparent from her voluntary training session, Min So Hee possesses grit and perseverance, enabling her to take down criminals with her innate agility and martial arts skills honed from numerous real-life experiences.

The newly released stills offer a glimpse of the evolving dynamics of their relationship as they train and share moments over coffee.

Oh Eui Shik joins Lee Min Ki's new action thriller K-drama

Actor Oh Eui Shik is returning to the K-drama scene after three months.

On April 30, it was officially confirmed that Oh Eui Shik is joining the cast of the soon-to-air K-drama Crash. He will work alongside Lee Min Ki, Kwak Sun Young, Heo Sung Tae, Lee Ho Chul, Choi Moon Hee, Baek Hyun Jin, and more. 

Crash will be the second K-drama project of Oh Eui Shik for 2024. Early this year, the actor also starred in the historical K-drama Knight Flower with Lee Ha Nee, Lee Jong Won, Lee Ki Woo, Kim Sang Joong, Park Se Hyun, and Woo Kang Min. 

Oh Eui Shik started his acting career in 2015. He has starred in several popular K-dramas such as Crash Course in Romance, Big Mouth, True Beauty, Hi Bye, Mama!, Touch Your Heart, While You Were Sleeping, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, Love in the Moonlight, and more.

Yoo Seung Mok will be added to the cast of the upcoming ENA K-drama Crash.

On May 13, it was officially confirmed that actor Yoo Seung Mok will be part of the upcoming action thriller K-drama Crash. 

This will be his first official K-drama project for the year. The actor made a special appearance in the K-dramas The Bequeathed and Chicken Nugget. 

Last year, Yoo Seung Mok impressed everyone after starring in the K-dramas Moving and A Good Day to Be a Dog. He also made a cameo appearance in Shadow Detective Season 2, Decoy: Part 2, and Taxi Driver Season 2. He also participated in the films The Devil's Deal and Ransomed. 

Yoo Seung Mok made his acting debut in 2000. He is best known for nailing different roles whether in K-dramas or films. The actor is known to be part of the cast of the hit works One Ordinary Day, Taxi Driver, Kingdom, Voice Season 2, Decision to Leave, 1987: When the Day Comes, and more.

Yoo Seung Mok will work alongside  Lee Min Ki, Kwak Sun Young, Heo Sung Tae, Lee Ho Chul, Choi Moon Hee, and Baek Hyun Jin in Crash.

Crash: Episode 1 (First Impressions)

Jam-packed with zany comedy, heart-pumping action, and a deceitfully despicable villain of the week, Crash kickstarts its vehicular crime-busting journey in style. Though said style comprises offbeat humor and ridiculous wigs — but that’s a bonus, isn’t it?

 
EPISODE 1

 

Right off the bat, we’re introduced to the Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) unit, a small squad of four specializing in — you guessed it — vehicular crimes. Stuck somewhere in between the criminal division and the traffic division, the TCI is the black sheep that doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. Still, despite being looked down upon by their fellow officers, they fulfill their duties with resilient diligence and a fighting spirit.

At the heart of the team is the gung-ho MIN SO-HEE (Kwak Sun-young), who tricks a car dealer into revealing his scam together with her partner EO HYUN-KYUNG (Moon-hee). Joined by team leader JUNG CHAE-MAN (Heo Sung-tae) — who’s hilariously out of touch with modern pop culture — and gentle giant WOO DONG-KI (Lee Ho-chul), they proceed to take down the illegal dealers in a hilariously action-packed sequence.

Amidst the flying fists, bespectacled insurance investigator CHA YEON-HO (Lee Min-ki) gets caught in the fray, knocked out by So-hee’s mighty punch. Meek and polite, he winds up getting carted back to the police station, where his name card alerts So-hee to her blunder. Yeon-ho isn’t the least bit upset at being treated like a criminal; instead, he gives So-hee a manila envelope containing a serial murder case he’d like her team to investigate.

 

So-hee doesn’t spare it much thought, but when she loses the kind neighborhood granny to a traffic accident, she runs into Yeon-ho again at the wake. Disappointed by her lack of action, Yeon-ho remarks that she’s just like the others — he’d given the case to three other police stations, to no avail. Chastised, So-hee pores over the case files all night.

That brings us to our case of the week. JUNG HO-GYU (Bae Yoo-ram) is a heartless perpetrator of insurance fraud, who targets elderly women to pay off their relatives with meager sums of settlement money. Exploiting their sympathy with a sob story and guileless puppy eyes, Ho-gyu evades a court case time and time again — then profits from the insurance payout.

 

All the evidence gathered so far is purely circumstantial, which raises doubt about Ho-gyu’s culpability. If given the benefit of the doubt, maybe he just has awful luck? No way, Chae-man counters. Once bitten, twice shy; had it truly been a tragic accident, Ho-gyu wouldn’t have bought a second vehicle a mere month later, much less rack up four such “accidents.”

While checking out the most recent accident site, So-hee once again bumps into Yeon-ho, who rattles off a spiel of calculations to estimate the car’s velocity. Peering closer at the road, Yeon-ho realizes the location of the yaw marks left by the car’s tires reveal the driver’s intent. The swerve wasn’t to avoid the victim, as would be the case for most accidents — it was to ensure he’d strike her down.

 

In a lucky coincidence, the used cars dealer that Ho-kyu obtained his vehicles from just so happens to be the same one the team had apprehended. Plying the car dealer into cooperation with delicious food, the team sets a trap for Ho-kyu, outfitting a used car with wiretaps and hidden cameras.

Unfortunately, Ho-kyu catches on to their scheme and sells the car off to a stranger, sending the TCI on a wild goose chase. Elsewhere, an irate Ho-kyu speeds straight towards the used car dealer — only to crash into a bicycle that suddenly cuts into his path. It’s Yeon-ho, who’s now sprawled on the ground with a bruise on his jaw.

 

All in all, Crash delivers a solidly entertaining premiere with delightfully quirky characters, exhilarating car chases, and little dashes of humor sprinkled between the absurd comedy. (That delivery guy closing the door on his way out, then smoothly opening it again for the TCI team to catch the baddies, LOL!) It’s like Taxi Driver with more legal repercussions and less vigilante vengeance; the signature flair of director Park Joon-woo is evident, and it was fun to spot all the cameos.

The first episode doesn’t particularly make a mark in any one aspect just yet, but it keeps a good pace, introducing us to the ragtag team behind the wheel and laying the groundwork for their future trajectory. Your mileage may vary, but as long as it doesn’t veer too far off the rails with its wacky antics, I think this show has the potential to be a fun joyride.

The newly released poster shows Cha Yeon Ho (Lee Min Ki), Min So Hee (Kwak Sun Young), Jung Chae Man (Heo Sung Tae), Woo Dong Gi (Lee Ho Chul), and Eo Hyun Kyung (Moon Hee) all in uniforms for the first time. The classic car, a TCI trademark, is parked in front of the makeshift container office outside Namgang Police Station. The TCI team radiates confidence as they stand in front of the car, hinting at a future where the team will grow even stronger.

Previously on “Crash,” the TCI team, epitomized by the external container office that couldn’t even secure a spot inside the police station, was seen as the “odd one out.” Despite facing criticism and round-the-clock tasks like late-night DUI patrols, the TCI team remained undeterred. Under the leadership of the compassionate and resilient Jung Chae Man, the bold team leader Min So Hee, the youngest member Eo Hyun Kyung, and car expert Woo Dong Gi seamlessly tackled criminals with swift action. From dismantling large-scale used car fraud operations to probing serial murder cases targeting the elderly for insurance scams, they achieved remarkable success.

The introduction of Cha Yeon Ho, a KAIST mathematics graduate, adds a new dimension to the TCI team’s investigative capabilities. In his first case at the Kanghee three-way intersection, Yeon Ho analyzed factors like curvature, slope, gradient, and skewness to identify road issues. He used calcium chloride properties to scientifically explain why the road was excessively slippery. Although Cha Yeon Ho is more inclined towards solo work due to his social limitations, experienced team leader Min So Hee acknowledged his intellect by saying, “This guy’s [brain] is definitely useful.” With this recognition, there are high hopes for Yeon Ho to seamlessly integrate into the TCI team in the future as a key member.

The production team also hinted at an exciting development to come where Cha Yeon Ho’s past will intertwine with new characters and incidents, adding depth to the storyline. Notably, several characters linked to the accident that traumatized him will appear in the upcoming episodes of the drama.

Investigating the series of tunnel accidents, the team uncovers a three-way ruse behind the supposed ghost sightings. After a crash, a tow company will swarm the flustered driver, ushering them towards a repair shop. Then, while their damaged car is being fixed, a rental company will offer them a temporary car — only to covertly smash it up and demand compensation. All three business owners are in cahoots to fleece unsuspecting drivers, ruled by the iron fist of the car rental thug.

All that’s left is to figure out how exactly the crashes were engineered. KAIST graduate Yeon-ho explains the topography of that particular junction makes it prone to accidents, which points to why most incidents occurred on rainy days. As for the few clear days, Yeon-ho realizes that only the specific stretch of road where the accidents occurred had been wet.

 

Miraculously, the team’s prayers indeed call forth rain, prompting Yeon-ho to crack a rare smile. That night, So-hee dons a disguise and drives a beat-up car — courtesy of the used cars dealer from last week — to deliberately crash it and lure the scammers out.

Meanwhile, Yeon-ho’s investigation once again leads him straight into the lion’s den, where he discovers sacks of calcium chloride in the garage of the car rental. The gangster boss notices him, but So-hee — who’s there as part of her undercover plan — covers for Yeon-ho just in time, calling out for her “husband.” HA.

With Yeon-ho’s deduction that the scammers scattered calcium chloride on the road to retain moisture from the sprinkler truck on sunny days, the scammers’ jig is up, and our trusty TCI team arrests them in another slick sequence. Chae-man tries to fight but gets kicked in the nuts for his trouble, LOL, and I love that the squad simply delivers the sniveling baddies to Yeon-ho for him to cuff.

 

This week, we learn about the pasts that shaped our protagonists into who they are today. When So-hee’s taxi driver dad offers Yeon-ho a ride home, he learns that So-hee had essentially grown up in the backseat after her mother’s passing, and she now drives the car that was her father’s first taxi. Having heard about Yeon-ho’s solitary nature from So-hee, Dad invites him to eat with them sometimes when he doesn’t want to be alone. Aww.

As for Yeon-ho, we find out why he only rides his bicycle no matter where he goes. Back when he’d been a fresh graduate, he’d taken his eyes off the road briefly while driving back to Seoul from his parents’ home. That moment of inattention led to him crashing into a newlywed couple, killing the bride Hyun-soo and carving an indelible trauma into Yeon-ho. Notably, Chae-man had received disciplinary action in the case, though we aren’t privy to the reason why.

 

Three high-schoolers had given witness statements in that case, and one of them has grown up to become the misogynistic womanizer YANG JAE-YOUNG (Heo Ji-won), who’s at the center of our next case. His employee KIM MIN-JOO jumped out of his speeding car along a highway, suffering severe injuries, but the TCI team can’t pursue the case because Jae-young has threatened her into silence.

Instead, smart cookie Yeon-ho thinks out of the box and initiates a tax investigation to seize Jae-young’s car, since it’s actually the property of his father’s company. Talk about nepotism backfiring, ha. Alas, Jae-young won’t be an easy opponent, because he also has connections in the form of PYO JUNG-WOOK (Kang Ki-doong). Not only is Jung-wook another of the three student witnesses, but his father is also the current Deputy Commissioner General of the police force.

"Lovely Runner" and "Crash" Rise to Their Highest Ratings

ENA's crime thriller Crash also achieved its highest ratings of all time for episode 4 — 4.08% (nationwide) and 4.19% (metropolitan). The K-drama started off with 2.23% (nationwide) and 2.64% (metropolitan) and has set a new personal record for every episode. Crash is also trending on Disney+ in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.

ENA’s “Crash” has released new stills!

“Crash” is a crime investigation drama about a Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) team that tracks crimes that occur on the road.

Newly released stills unveil the scene of the second police arrest technique class. Unlike before, Cha Yeon Ho’s (Lee Min Ki’s) gaze is sharp, and the altered atmosphere, including scars on his face, grabs attention.

Previously, Min So Hee (Kwak Sun Young) supervised Cha Yeon Ho’s police arrest training. However, Yeon Ho appeared uninterested at the gym. So Hee suggested, “If my knees touch the ground even once, we’ll scrap this training,” but Cha Yeon Ho was subdued without any effort.

Cha Yeon Ho continuously collapsing weakly onto the mat and Min So Hee’s persistent efforts to lift him up provided unexpected humor. Curiosity deepens about whether Cha Yeon Ho’s changed attitude will lead to advancements in police arrest techniques.

 

The production team hinted at an upcoming development in the show, stating, “An incident occurs that motivates Cha Yeon Ho, who previously felt no need for physical strength, and by his side is the reliable ace squad leader Min So Hee.”
