'Investigation Chief 1958' is a prequel to 'Investigation Chief 1958', which wrote the history of Korean investigative films. Set in 1958, an era of barbarism, detective Park Young-han (played by Lee Je-hoon), who specializes in apprehending petty thieves, teams up with three unique colleagues to fight corruption in power. It is a drama that depicts the story of being reborn as a detective for the people by breaking the extraordinary sense of reality with common sense.

Actor Eom Jun-ki, who has been attracting attention in the independent short film industry, appears in the play as Seong-chil, a young man from a rice cake shop in Jongnam Market. Eom Jun-ki has won the ‘Male Actor of the Year Award’ at the 6th Chungmuro Film Festival Director’s Week for his film ‘Turning Gun’ and the ‘Acting Award’, which goes to the actor who showed the most outstanding performance at the 39th Busan International Short Film Festival.

Seongchil, played by Eom Joon-gi, is a young man who lost his parents during the war and survived on his own. He works at a rice cake shop in Jongnam Market. I was happy to be able to play the character of Seongchil, and I went into filming with the heart of cheering for Seongchil, who lives a more courageous life than anyone else. “I prepared hard with the hope that I could show a new side of myself through Seongchil, who is young but has manly and honest charms, and I hope viewers will enjoy watching it,” he said.

Case-cracking camaraderie with Chief Detective Lee Je-hoon

by solstices

NISI20240320_0001505735_web.jpg?rnd=2024

Another action-packed teaser is out for MBC’s period thriller Chief Detective 1958, with Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2) stepping into the shoes of Choi Bool-am’s iconic Chief Inspector. In this prequel, we rewind to the rookie days of the inspector’s youth, following alongside him as he builds his steadfast resilience and righteous reputation.

The teaser opens with our titular detective Park Young-han (Lee Je-hoon) in the aftermath of a thwarted case, clenching his jaw and narrowing his eyes in a steely glare. “I want nothing more than to apprehend them,” Young-han admits, voice thick with frustration and anguish. “But I can’t.” A montage of gunshots and bloodshed reinforces his utter helplessness, and with no clear path out of this quandary, Young-han turns to reinforcements.

“It’s time to start again from the beginning,” Young-han declares, renewing his resolve. Four heads are better than one, and Young-han’s recruited three allies who are just as capable and committed to the cause. You know a hero means business when he puts on his leather gloves, and Young-han does just that as he strides down the corridors of the police station, his trusty team in tow.

It’s time for introductions, and naturally, our hero is the first batter. Sneaking undercover into a gambling den and single-handedly subduing a suspect in the cover of night, Young-han proudly holds the title of the detective with the highest arrest rate… of cattle thieves. LOL. Such is the life of a provincial country boy, who has his fair share of goofy moments such as whacking someone on the head with the hand he just licked.

When Young-han gets moved up to Seoul, he takes his ardent intensity with him, and he meets his match in fellow detective Kim Sang-soon. Played by a sharp-edged Lee Dong-hwi (Big Bet), Sang-soon quite literally lives up to his “crazy dog” moniker when he bites down on a criminal with such might that even the collective strength of three lackeys isn’t enough to yank him off.

Backing him up in strength is Choi Woo-sung (Melancholia) as the broad-shouldered Jo Kyung-hwan, whose fists are so quick to act that even Sang-soon winds up getting his lapels grabbed. Thankfully, justice guides his punches more often than not, and Kyung-hwan sends the gangster wastrel Rattlesnake (musical actor Park Jung-hyuk in his screen debut) flying with just a single slap. Can someone qualify as a police officer by sheer virtue of their physical prowess? According to the enthused wink and thumbs up from Young-han, apparently so.

Every brawn-filled team needs its brain, and Yoon Hyun-soo (A Good Day to Be a Dog) fills that role as the quick-witted tactician Seo Ho-jung. He may only know “just a little” English, and he may be diverging from his professor parents’ path, but his incisive intelligence and street smarts are enough to earn him an invitation to Young-han’s team.

With pushcart brawls, Molotov cocktail explosions, and good old ‘50s fashion, our heroes are ready to capture rotten criminals and deal out well-deserved retribution for their crimes. The tale of the soon-to-be legendary detectives begins now.

Directed by filmmaker Kim Sung-hoon (Rampant) with scripts written by Kim Young-shin, Chief Inspector 1958 will tackle its first case on April 19.

While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” will be set even earlier, in 1958.

Regarding his reason for starring in the drama, Lee Je Hoon shared, “The biggest [reason] was my great anticipation and curiosity for the prequel of ‘Chief Inspector.’ It’s also an honor to be able to participate in the story of a project that received love from the entire nation to the extent that it broadcast for 18 years. I thought that if it was revealed how detective Park Young Han and the chief investigation team members met and how the people of that time period looked at the world, the people who remembered ‘Chief Inspector’ would enjoy it.”

He continued, “Park Young Han is a very innocent character whose passion and tenacity for catching the criminal is stronger than anyone else, and he is a young man with a passionate heart.”

The actor further used a phrase that means “retaliating strongly against the strong and being weak for the weak” to describe his character. Lee Je Hoon explained, “He works hard to capture the criminals while trying to empathize with the victims and being more heartbroken than anyone else like the people involved in the case and their families. Although he may seem simple-minded and reckless, I felt proud and thought that it was amazing that he put himself on the line [to catch criminals].” Lee Je Hoon continued, “I got the thought, ‘If there are lots of detectives like this in real life, I could live with less worries,’ and, ‘The existence of police themselves can be comfort and strength.'”

“Chief Detective 1958” will premiere on April 19 at 9:50 p.m. KST.

MBC has released two captivating teaser trailers for its highly anticipated drama Chief Detective 1958. This series serves as a fresh prequel to the beloved Korean classic Chief Inspector, which captivated audiences for 18 years, from 1971 to 1989, boasting an astonishing peak rating of 70 per cent during its prime. While the original series unfolded in the 1970s and 1980s, representing contemporary times then, Chief Detective 1958 ventures even further back in time, setting its story in the year 1958.

In the upcoming series Chief Detective 1958, Lee Je Hoon takes on the role of a younger Park Young Han, the titular chief detective originally portrayed by Choi Bool Am in the classic series. The first teaser, freshly unveiled, kicks off with a nostalgic flashback to the 300th episode of the original Chief Inspector series. Here, Detective Park rallies his dedicated team with a determined command, “Fire up! We need to find the criminal no matter what!”

The teaser then transitions to the new, younger version of the same four-member squad in 1958, accompanied by the caption, “The legendary Detective Park is coming back!” Lee Je Hoon's voice echoes as he declares, "Let's start everything from the beginning." Amidst glimpses of the two different versions of the famous TV detective, the 1958 Park Young Han is introduced as a skillful young rookie who has maintained the highest success rate in catching petty thieves for the past three years. There are numerous parallels between the original show and its prequel, and viewers witness Lee Je Hoon embodying the iconic main character from the 1971 series.

Meanwhile, the second teaser opens with a clip from the concluding episode of Chief Inspector, which wrapped up its long and successful run in 1989. As the footage showcases glimpses of the 1958 squad in action, the young Park Young Han played by Lee Je Hoon inquires, “Do you know who I am?” Following the caption teasing, “The four of them came together to catch the bad guys,” Detective Park from both eras declare, “If you commit a crime, you’ll be punished no matter what!” Chief Detective 1958 is all set to premiere on April 19 at 9:50 PM KST.

In addition to Lee Je Hoon's portrayal of Park Young Han, we see Kim Sang Soon (played by Lee Dong Hwi) joining the team. Known as the “crazy dog” for his ferocious bite against criminals, Kim Sang Soon is a charismatic and prominent figure within Jongnam Police Station. Choi Woo Sung takes on the role of Jo Kyung Hwan, a young man with remarkable strength who transitions from working at a rice mill to joining the police force. Lastly, we have Seo Ho Jung (portrayed by Yoon Hyun Soo), characterized by his tidy appearance and resolute gaze. After graduating from a prestigious university, Seo Ho Jung sets his sights on a long-cherished dream, opting to apply for a special police recruitment program.

Lee Dong Hwi Is Lee Je Hoon's Untamable

Lee Dong Hwi Is Lee Je Hoon's Untamable "Crazy Dog" Partner In "Chief Detective 1958"

Lee Dong Hwi has shared his thoughts on his upcoming drama “Chief Detective 1958”!

“Chief Detective 1958” is a brand-new prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” will be set even earlier, in 1958.

Lee Je Hoon will be playing a younger version of the titular chief detective Park Young Han, while Lee Dong Hwi will be playing Kim Sang Soon, a fierce and slightly unhinged detective who teams up with him to fight injustice and catch criminals.

Due to his intensity, grit, and insistence on doing everything his way, Kim Sang Soon has become known as a “crazy dog” who bites the bad guys and doesn’t let go. Full of pent-up fury at the corruption in society, Kim Sang Soon is just starting to grow exhausted from his lonely fight when he meets Park Young Han, a detective who is both similar to and different from him at the same time.

In newly released stills from the upcoming drama, Kim Sang Soon has a cynical gaze and world-weary aura as he seems to get lost in thought. In another photo, the detective looks intimidating as he skillfully points a gun at someone with a calm expression.

Lee-Dong-Hwi.jpegLee-Dong-Hwi-2.jpeg

However, a final photo captures a totally different side of the character: after having a few drinks, Kim Sang Soon is all smiles as he blissfully cuddles his adorable dog Soon Nam with an intoxicated glow.

Lee-Dong-Hwi-3.jpeg

When asked why he decided to star in the drama, Lee Dong Hwi replied, “The fact that I’d be able to attach my name to ‘Chief Inspector,’ a legendary drama that received love for a very long time, and in particular, the fact that I’d be able to work together with Lee Je Hoon.” He added, “I also had strong faith in the director, with whom I’d worked on a previous project, so there was no reason for me not to join the drama.”

Lee Dong Hwi went on to describe Kim Sang Soon as “a righteous character who has a lot of loyalty and fearlessly jumps into situations no matter what lies ahead.”

Finally, he expressed his admiration for actor Kim Sang Soon, who played the character in the original series.

“The character created by [actor Kim Sang Soon], who was simply the essence of Sang Soon himself, was so cool and charming that I personally wanted to become more like him,” said Lee Dong Hwi. “In order to depict [Sang Soon’s] detailed backstory, which wasn’t in the original series, and to portray the character in a way that didn’t clash [with the original version], I spent a lot of time discussing, analyzing, and trying different things with the director and writer.”

“Chief Detective 1958” will premiere on April 19 at 9:50 p.m. KST.

Watch: Lee Je Hoon, Lee Dong Hwi, And More Are Determined To Fight Injustice With Any Means Necessary In "Chief Detective 1958"

MBC’s upcoming drama “Chief Detective 1958” has released a new teaser!

“Chief Detective 1958” will serve as a prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” will be set even earlier, in 1958.

Lee Je Hoon will be playing a younger version of the titular chief inspector Park Young Han, who was played by Choi Bool Am in the original series. The drama also stars Lee Dong Hwi, Choi Woo Sung, and Yoon Hyun Soo as members of Park Young Han’s squad.

The first scene of the video shows Park Young Han with a fierce look in his eyes, making viewers believe that he is a tough police officer. However, the scenes that follow show that detective Park Young Han is not as tough as he seems.

In one scene, he challenges someone to a fist fight, only to get knocked out. Park Young Han boasts that he doesn’t feel pain no matter how much he’s hit, only to cry out in pain while getting beaten up by thugs. Another scene shows him cowardly running away from thugs right after vowing not to be a disgraceful police officer.

The teaser also gives a glimpse of the teamwork between detectives Park Young Han, Kim Sang Soon, Jo Kyung Hwan, and Seo Ho Jung as they are seen using every means necessary in their fight against injustice.
