Akdong Musician Tops Melon Album and Artists Charts for Fifth Straight Week

Akdong Musician has topped the Melon Album Top 20 chart for the fifth week in a row with the release “Play.” The group has also retained the Number 1 spot on Melon’s Artists’ Top 20 for the same period of time.

The duo, consisting of brother-and-sister team Lee Chan Hyuk and Lee Soo Hyun, have enjoyed meteoric success since they first appeared on SBS audition program "K-Pop Star 2" in 2013, a competition they eventually went on to win. Since then, they have signed a contract with YG Entertainment. The debut album, released April 7 this year, was written and produced by Lee Chan Hyuk.

Topping the chart for a fifth straight week means that Akdong Musician are now only one week short of equaling the record for the longest period ever spent at the top of the artist chart. That record is currently held by fellow YG act, 2NE1, who have previously held onto the top spot for six consecutive weeks.

“Play” contains the hit songs “200%,” “Give Love” and “Melted,” and Akdong Musician recently won Mnet’s M! Countdown and SBS’ “Inkikayo” for three consecutive weeks.
