Goodbye, Kim Jung Pal

The writer didn’t change the script. JH was never meant to be the husband. His character and fate has already been set in ep 1. While he lost the girl, he gained something far more precious – his family. Compared to Chilbong and Taewoong, his story is definitely by far the most developed one of all and we ought to give the writer due credit.

Why don’t you Nike?

24394066001_4c4a0cef19_z.jpg

JH always wore Nike sneakers and carried a Nike bag. As an ardent Nike fan, he should’ve gotten the writer’s message for him: Just do it! Hesitancy was JH’s main character flaw. It was so frustrating to watch him sit on his bed, brooding over what he should do, but doing nothing anyway.

As a matter of fact, his character had already been established in ep 1, when DR was escorted down Brazil Deokbokki’s back alley by two thugs.

JH: There’s two of them and two of us. It’s worth a shot. If he takes care of one of them, I can take care of the other one. And we can definitely win. Which one should I hit first? The one on the right? Or the one on the left? No, no. I’ve given them too much time. Now… I have to hit them now.

24180900510_a5bd2b3d64_z.jpg

By the time he finally made up his mind, it was too late. He even got his Nike sneakers stolen as a punishment for his hesitancy. If this doesn’t foreshadow what eventually happened, I don’t know what does. He took 18 episodes to understand this message, but by then, he had already lost his first love.

In ep 7, DS narrated, “If you love someone, you have to tell them now before your fleeting days become filled with regret… That’s why you have to shove embarrassment aside and confess your love to the one you love before it’s too late.”

What it means to be a dog

JH’s nickname is Jungpal, because he was described as a dog, not yet a human. Of all animals, why dog?

24368172612_f9f4266fb9_z.jpg

Dogs bark. JH loved to snub DS with harsh words and rude remarks. We know he didn’t mean it, and but how would DS know better? Some people may enjoy squabbling with their partners, but this wasn’t DS’ expression of love. She clearly didn’t enjoy it.

Ep 4, DS came home eating a popsicle
JH: Where were you?
DS: The study room. To study.
JH: Look at you, lying through your teeth. You sure you didn’t just dig up a grave? Are you a zombie or something?

Ep 9, after MBC concert
DS: It’s so cold.
JH: So why’d you wear a skirt? Geez… you have no common sense.
DS: How would you go on without me?
JH: What are you talking about?
DS: You know, since you seem to live off the joy you get from tormenting me! Also, when a girl says she’s cold, a guy should give her his jacket or something!
JH: Are you crazy? Why should I?

But dogs are loyal too. JH was particularly loyal to his family. In fact, the writer made it a point to flashback on how his family stuck together through thick and thin and miraculously went from rags to riches.

Consider his diary entry as a young child:
Today, I played soccer. Taek and Duk Seon got one goal and Sun Woo and Dong Ryong got zero. But I got two goals. Because my older brother cheered for me and shouted my name. My brother’s dream is to be Maradona. I made a promise to my brother. I told him I’d become Maradona in place of my brother. I will have to work harder on soccer from now on.

JB was born with a weak heart, so JH decided to help him fulfil his dream, whatever that might be. That’s why he chose to join the air force. Some people may think that JH doesn’t have a dream of his own. But I think his dream was his family.

The art of noble idiocy

Both JH and Taek were noble idiots, but Taek got the girl. What did JH do wrong?

From ep 11-14, while DS was trying all means and ways to get close to JH, he made deliberate effort to distance himself from her. She said, “See you tomorrow!” and JH woke up before sunrise to avoid her. She actually had to ask him four times before he agreed to go to Lee Moon Sae’s concert with her.

And when they finally went to the concert, this happened:
Male friend: Hey, why did you get so pretty?
DS: Huh? (looks at JH) Hey… that’s not true! What are you saying?
Male friend: I tried to get in touch with you a few times after we graduated middle school.
DS: I know.
Male friend: Your home phone number hasn’t changed, right? Is it okay if I call you?
(DS looks at JH again. JH shows no reaction. DS nods.)

DS kept looking at him, as if to flaunt the attention, hoping that he would display some sort of jealousy. A few days ago, JH had just told her not to go for the blind date. But there he was, oblivious to the fact that another guy was hitting on her.

Finally, when DS gave JH the pink shirt, it was a last-ditch effort. And he ruined it completely by failing to clear the air. We all know what DS narrated in ep 2: An illusion is short, but a misunderstanding lasts a long time. That’s why illusions offer freedom while misunderstandings chain you down.

24368202942_490e44d478_z.jpg

By ep 15, JH had officially blown it. DR had to drag DS to JH’s house for lunch – that was how much she didn’t want to see him.

23849696253_95791f6180_z.jpg

Becoming human

If his character arc had ended right there, it would have been sad and pathetic. But JH had matured and developed in the last three episodes more than he ever did throughout the drama.

JH: (narrates) In the end, fate and timing do not just happen out of coincidence. They are products of earnest, simple choices that make up miraculous moments. Being resolute, making decisions without hesitation… That is what makes timing. He wanted her more than I did. And I should have been more courageous.

He learned a lesson on courage and timing. The confession at the pub, was merely for the sake of a closure. If he had truly wanted a response from DS, he would have done it in private. Confessing in front of SW and DR made it easier for him to lighten the atmosphere, and to avoid hearing her rejection.

Even before Taek asked, he had given him his blessings. He had a big heart, and I applaud him for that. JH had moved on, why haven’t you?

He learned to be a good daughter son. JH’s family meant the world to him. When his dad was upset, he cheered him up. When his mom felt unneeded, he made her feel irreplaceable again. But in both instances, he had to rely on DR for advice.

24368183642_579e52f770_z.jpg

24368190262_4e24f637dd_z.jpg

SW's mom: Still, you have daughters so you get through it. Our poor Mi Ran doesn't have any daughters. You need daughters at times like these.
...
DS' mom: I guess my daughters are good at taking care of the little things.
SW's mom: I wouldn't say it's that. It's because they are your daughters, so they know a mom's heart. Sons will never know a mother's heart.

When JH’s mom was struggling with menopause, he actually noticed the wedding photo was fake and planned for his parents to have the sweetest wedding ceremony ever without needing DR’s advice. JH became a "daughter" to his mom. He finally understood his parents’ feelings and learned how to show love to them.

24476494585_82b4f9696a_z.jpg

Yes, JH didn’t get the girl. Sadly, he wasn’t meant to be with DS right from the start. But over the years, his character had grown and matured. And at the end of the day, he still had his family – a complete, united, loving, hilarious family – which had always been his top priority.

Do you still think the writer had been unkind to JH?

- The future husband thing is already discussed to death. We've been shown that Taek is actually quite possesive (his cute slap at Sunwoo upon reading DS' diary?) and loves to tease DS too, in a witty way (like when he said Bora must be DS in her previous life). Basically, future couple bicekring =/= it's not Taek. The first time the husband appear is on EP2, where at that time we barely know Taek's real character, but the show slowly revealing to us, like they finally reveal Taek's smoking habit on EP9. People are too busy relating JH, which at that time has the closest match with future husband's persona, but dismissing how many times Taek can yell "Ya!" at DS too.

- Motherly? It's just fans interpretation, usually from JH-DS side. Check on TK-DS thread's first post to see how many of us think otherwise. Do you see DS caring for SW when he sprained his leg as a motherly act? It's just similar to that, but DS does that care daily to Taek, it kinda shows how much she care about him. In fact , Taek must have been DS favourite person outside her family, that she can happily admit how lucky she is if she marry him (on EP10) even as a joke. She just had that closeness and familiarity with Taek. I can also interpret how R97's SW act towards YJ as 'sisterly bullies', but it's not, right?

- About this, it's really about how the writer want it to be, we can't help it. She want to create a heartbreaking first love story from JH's side, then so be it.

Again, please stop with the 'changed script', or 'tribute to CB fans' or whatever, it might comes as rude to some people who truly enjoy the show.

Whether it was discussed or not, how would a lot of the international viewers would know that where we have to wait for the English subs like 2-3 days after? I'm sorry I didn't get to see the finale RIGHT AWAY like many of the soompiers after it came out to join the discussion with you all.. so that's why I just voiced my own. You can't avoid repetitions where you have fans/viewers that only got to see subs days later than the eps actually aired.

You have your own interpretation as much as I have my own interpretation. Why are you so 'upset' with mine?

Yes I'm a fan of the show too. and yes from what I watch the show on my own accord and follow the story, that's how I saw DS 'cared' for TK as. You interpreted it your way, that the ending made sense to you, good for you. I interpreted it my way that the ending didn't make sense for me, so I ranted. Did I bash any character? Did I bash your favorite character? DS cared for SW at that time was bc she already crushed on SW. that she wanted to show him that she liked him, that's why it wasn't motherly. DS has ALWAYS been caring that way ('motherly' - MY interpretation) since they were young, without wanting him to notice her or show that she liked him bc she didn't at that time. Taek is EVERYONE's favorite person, especially in their group of 5 friends. That's why he's their 'national treasure'; ALL of them are protective and cared for him. not just DS.

I agreed with the bolded underlined one too. And of course because of that, it showed inconsistency with how things were from beginning. It was consistent with R97 and R94, but to me, it wasn't for R88.

My take on CB-relatedness was only my observation. In R94, I was actually rooting for Trash-oppaya and the ending could only make sense that he was the endgame because that was how the story progressed. But the backlash was CRAZY back then. And in many forums now, JH leads the poll of being the husband by far. And (to me) the story had progressed that way up until ep 17. That's why I made the CB inference. Meant no harm, yo.

This isn't the only drama where the ending didn't make sense to me. I'm sure you have those moments with some other dramas that you have watched too. And because it didn't make sense to me, I ranted. Why is it rude? I did stated that I liked everything else of R88 BUT the main love triangle, didn't I? Only because my interpretation of the storyline, of DS's feelings for both of them are different from how the writer wanted them to be. Yes i'm mad. but what else I can do about it except ranting and move on? I never undermine them for their hardwork, or any actor/actress. I don't bash Taek or his character for being the husband at the end either. I just personally didn't think it made natural sense, and it felt forced for some reasons. That's all.

Hit the nail exactly on the head. I think international viewers in general misunderstood more because of the 3 day wait for subs, so we did most of the interpreting on our own without fully understanding the context. JH stands so strong on his own even without the girl, that saying his character was forgotten about or wasted is kind of an insult because his life is so full of other things other than just getting the girl! Imagine how you would feel if all people saw in you was your ability to get the girl, when you have the best family and friends you can ever ask for, AND your dream job! JH moving on as actually so crucial to the development of the dramas conclusion. It meant so much to him, more than we initially think when we see the headline "JH Confesses to DS... but treats it is a joke?"

I honestly don't know how writer Lee Woo Jung can top this one! I'm kind of worried because I want another instalment so so bad it keeps getting better and better T.T and what if she decides not to write another one because all the media focuses on is the husband hunt and accusing her of changing the script. Be strong writer!! Let your creative juices flow no matter what people say!!

@sillyvivian_yo89

I'm sorry if i sounded upset, believe me i'm not in a mood to be upset right now. :)

Though since you asked questions (rather, ranting in form of 'Why?' question), i thought i'd answer that. Since you rant it here in the MT instead of the shipper thread, i thought you might want some response from the other side? Though honestly i know nothing might change how you look at this love triangle issues. It's just you might want to know there's another perspective in contrast to what JH-DS shipper believe all this time, and that other perspective make their own sense too.

I'm sorry if i also assume you stated about 'changed script' or 'tribute to CB fans'. It's usually just this that turns me off, cause it is undermining the writer in some way. There are more JH fans out there than Taek, why should the writer change the script to favor the minority right? ;)

If you're still curious to make some sense out of this, if you've calmed down, try reading the other side by visiting TaekSun thread. The first post says it all, including all the narrative analysis done by the inhabitant. Or give it a rest for months, or years. Try watching the whole thing again without any shipper glasses this time, might help.

Thank you for this too.

I still think JH as a husband would a be more natural progress/made more sense than Taek. But it did make me feel a bit better.

Because of these details that you listed, JH's character becomes so good that to me, it overshadowed Taek's. And of course with RJY's acting, it was even better. Yes his moments of hesitations were such noble idiocy, that he put others ahead of him. Which I don't think is a bad thing at all. Since it's a drama, I guess I hoped for those silent good-doer to have happy ending too, and in this case, get the girl that he silently loved for so long. But i guess things done in silent are things came unheard.

That's why as much as I felt for JH's story, I personally thought the storyline should have put Taek as a strong contender as well from way beginning. Viewers already eliminated him out of the competition until that snowy phone call. Many of them rooting for Taek merely bc how adorbs PGB is also. I guess that's why i couldn't accept it.........................................................................................yet,

@_jesse : thank you..me too also need to hear something like this. It hurt so bad but I really need to see the silver lining of all that was happened to junghwan. I do see that he was moving on, but I also need to see with my own two eyes that he is well and happy in the present scene. I need that closure for me to move on from his failed first love story badly.

I guess my one mistake was that I fallen so deep in love with him, from the first time that he appeared on scene.

I hope this time it will be my last time crying for him (I'm at the office right now but tears can't stop flowing :tears:)

I want to be able to see the drama again for the message that the writer want to convey because it will be my loss to not cherish this beautiful drama, the best one from all the series.

@wizengamot oh yeah? I think there is no prove JH as the real husband. I ALSO READ ITS ABOUT DURING FILMING CONFESSION,Not the real life. Yes she cried as hyeri, but if you heard confession from your bestfriend? That love you from along time ago, You will cry like crazy. And about rjy v app, its from his POV, not what the writer want. So he is free to say anything, but i talk about reply 1988, and my opinion about HYERI CRIED !

reply 1988 is over, TK is the husband, i post about what i read and i saw. But honestly, i dont need Your reply about my opinion. This is MT, you can skip mine. JH character was great, i love RJY. But not your reply. Thanks

i'd really like it if you read my comment again and then reply. because i believe i never said JH is the real husband. And about crying, Hyeri cried in the real life while RJY was doing JH confession.  And again, read my comment because I definitely said TK is the husband. hahahaha i don;t know what's up with you. or did you just not perhaps understood my comment? All i'm saying is Hyeri cried while filming (and she's not supposed to) and you say love RJY but you just belittle or pick on his character. Is that how you love someone? I really don't understand why do you have to drag his name when praising TK's character. Next time, read carefully the comment before reacting. Think, before you click. I would really have not comment on your post, if you did not pick on JH character.

I just finished watching the last two episodes with subs, and I feel like the ending made so much sense. I don't know about you guys, but I was really satisfied with it. TK being the husband, wasn't such a big deal compared to the whole story that the writer was tying to tell. Reply 1988 is a story about youth, and how time just seems to flow without really waiting for anyone at all. So yes, we do reminisce about our youth, not because we miss who we were at that time, but because of that simple and warm joy that could only exist in the momentary wisp of joy, that so often seems to slip through our fingers more than we notice.

The future scenes in 2016 show a moment in the present where they are talking about their past and talking about the good ol' times they had in the now unrecognizable Ssangmundong. That neighborhood, where not only their youth was spent, was where their parent's youth and cherished memories were spent too. Those all too familiar alleys were landmarks of memory, like the stairway where SW-BR often met, the alleys that soon just turned to be a place where TK-DS had dates and where Cheetah omma and Kim Sajang would ride their bikes and take walks to get fresh air, the table/bench outside where the 3 ahjummas would gossip and pick out their bean sprouts. Can't you see that the husband game this time around truly was not the focus of the drama? It's such a pity that even I just realized that in the last few episodes of this precious drama. It was mentioned again and again, youth was the topic of their interview in the future, as adult BR mentioned.

The unanswered questions and characters that seemingly were left hanging, were not products of rushed time or quality diluting excuses contrary to the initial popular belief. I think that the writer did this on purpose, to portray the reality of reminiscing about one's youth. Not everything will have closure. If you look back on your own youth, you'll also find many questions unasnwered but seem to be fine with it anyway, because of how we have naturally moved on from it. Like mentioned in the last two episodes, time just seems to flow. We have no escape from time, and instead of wallowing on missed chances and regrets, JH actually teaches a very important point about that in episode 18 (i realized after i got over his joke confession), and the drama would not have that effect on its theme of youth had JH not moved on and continued to pursue DS.  After much thought as someone who rooted for JH-DS, them ending up together would have caused the focus to go from youth to the conventional kdrama love again, which although we love so much of it, we already know enough about it and the writer knows this FULLY well.  Yes, i did not feel the butterflies that i would have felt in the TK-DS scenes had they not been with JH, but it all makes so much sense to me. The writer didnt intend to create an epic love story, which would be evident if she made JH-DS end game. She stuck true to what she said even in the drama's pre-production, that it would be about family. It's like the drama came around in a full circle once they showed the last scene of the revisiting of Ssangmundong to what seems to go back to one of the first few introductory scenes of episode 1. To me, that scene was what touched me the most, when DS was talking about youth and revisiting Ssangmungdong.

This is truly a beautiful drama with so much meaning, I apologize for getting caught up in the stupid husband hunt when in the end it didnt matter anyway. I might be the minority for saying this, but i really truly loved the way they ended the drama, probably the best ending with the most resonating message out of all three installments. If you are reading this and are one of the people that decided to bail on the last two episodes because of what many people were saying after the husband was revealed, please give it a chance and watch the last two episodes with a lens that embraces every character and aspect of the show as a part of one whole story with a beautiful message.

Thank you everyone in the forum, and all the people in all the shipper forums. After 10 years of drama watching, this is one of the most unforgettable dramas that will really have a special place in my heart! Can't wait to see you all once again when Reply 1980/1974/2001 airs!

Oh my God!!!! I re-activated my soompi account to just reply your post!

I felt the same way when I watched episode 20 RAW then read DB's recaps and just got crestfallen how people kept saying what a horrible ending it was, how there was no closure etc... I posted a comment there, "Guys, you are missing the point! The ending is not about closure! It's the best ending you could ever ask for THIS drama!" and hoping someone understood me that I kept refreshing DB's recap over and over again in the last few days. Alas, i saw your comment, here on thread i purposely tried to avoid commenting.

This! I love that we don't have closure on some of the characters, they don't need to. It's a story about family and the good old days. The ending has to be open-ending, just like our lives don't have closure and don't have answer for everything. There are glimpses of closure on Episode 19 but they were left for our interpretation. And I am thankful that this drama gives us freedom to choose our own ending that I have to reflect my life upon it. I don't want it changed or tweaked any other way. With its flaw comes perfection in execution.

This is the WRITER's story and message, it's a shame that the message wasn't conveyed to all viewers as she had probably expected. I just want to give her a pat in the back and tell her that she has done well and there are us who GET it and thankful for the drama being written the way it was.

PS. You are absolutely forgiven! :)

I think at first TAEK is the husband not JH, the writer didn't change the plot about who will be DS husband.. DS husband smoking, and taek is smoking too. in eps 12, when SW hug BR and Taek witness them hugging each other that night, taek want to smoke, so he was going outside, remember SW ever said that JH didn't smoking.  and taek read a comic a lot too, so the clue that DS husband really like read a comic is not a valid clue for JH.

The story began from taek room, and ended in taek's room too. it always been about taek at first, and taek in the end. so it really a closure ending.  and taek always wear training pants too like JH . it's not like they force the ending.

I still think JH as a husband would a be more natural progress/made more sense than Taek. But it did make me feel a bit better.

Why is it so? Why  more sense than Taek?? as you can read, many posters describe what JH character (they almost have similar narrative description about him), My POV about JH, his character nature doesn't fit as husband DS for so many reasons, JH existence at the first place might not be as husband of DS but as someone who will be a good example of person who fall inlove,  who lost his first love, realized why he lost it, and learn from it and then move on without bitterness..

TK-DS lovestory have different moral values to convey to viewers.. they have their own set of lessons that you will learn from their friendship and lovestory..

Sorry to cut your post, but i think being sorry for JH story is not that nice... Pity , being Sorry is not a good compliment for his story...Failure make him a better person...

I totally agree that the ending was a great one because of the nostalgic feeling it portrayed. The drama was about family relationships and fleeting youth. I also thought the writer intentionally did not show us JH's and DR's future because it's natural to lose touch of childhood friends and old neighbors. I think that's why in DS's present life, they only showed Taek and Bora, because those are the people DS is closest to. SW makes a voice cameo because he's her bro-in-law, and they mention JB because he became famous and is MO's husband.

This drama was one of the most natural, slice-of-life dramas I have ever seen, and it would be great if other dramas could do the same without relying on makjang elements (or husband hunts). Reply 1988 was reminiscent of dramas from the 90s, because back then family plots had more prominence in most dramas (unlike the minor, stereotypical roles and plots that parents/siblings have in dramas these days, besides writer Kim Soohyun's works).

I am excited that they are deciding to go back even more in time (if the rumor of Reply 1974 is true). I wish more dramas took place in the past (besides sageuks) but it's difficult to portray the politics back then due to government censorship.

So finished the series will wait for couple of weeks and then watch it again.

The last episode was a roller coaster. But while watching episode 19 it suddenly felt like maybe I missed some episode in between as Deok-seon suddenly went over to Taek instead of Jung-hwan. I wish Jung-hwan had put up some fight to show he cared for her, he even kept the pink shirt but maybe he didn't care enough. If he had just approached Deok-seon once maybe things would have changed at the end. Like Seo in guk did for Eunji in Reply 1997. Maybe the director could have taken an extra episode to show the developing relationship between Deok-seon and Taek and maybe that would have made more sense for everyone. And at the end of episode 20 would have loved to see the whole gang together with their spouses, instead of Deok-seon going back to the old street, but with the voiceover intact. Not sure why they skipped Deong-ryun and Jong-bong completely.

And Hyeri has been amazing in this. Initially I was a little hesitant at the casting having watched her previous dramas and then following the footsteps of Eunji and Go-ara but she really carried the role. She did a great job.

And the waiting starts for Reply 1974.
