*** Producer/s should look after their staff. This is disappointing to know. These people are human beings that need adequate rest. In K-entertainment, I heard many times about staff catching a nap during breaks in filming, but a rather uncomfortable sort of sleep. Because in the case of a 16 episode mini-series, usually a minimum of four episodes needs to be filmed before the drama goes to air. Cast members in leading roles have overlapping filming schedules, so they are on an even tighter schedule. Other cast members and staff have to be on standby for filming, and while the production might prefer a smaller cast, they are considered necessary for viewership ratings. Writers are also occasionally late with their scripts; it has become habit to continually edit the script to optimize ratings. Actors are given scripts just a day before shooting and have to pull all-nighters to understand and build a character, while producers don't have enough time to edit the scenes properly. When the drama is doing well rating-wise, for some, this could be a sufficiently sweet reward for lost sleep. That’s why, most K-actors and actresses often complain about their harsh filming environment. Actors surely find it hard to focus on their characters. It’s NICE to work on a project that is well prepared and reasonably scheduled. I’m sure shooting a drama series could be this great. The reasons behind the tight K-shooting schedule lie in the desired flexibility to respond to viewer feedback. Because the process of shooting and airing simultaneously allows writers to change storylines according to viewer preferences, it ultimately results in better ratings and profits for the show. :P

“When The Camellia Blooms” Criticized By Union For Poor Working Conditions

3f2efd0f13e0476082622dd7d0ab72fe.jpeg?s=

The broadcasting staff union department of Hope Solidarity Labor Union has called out KBS 2TV’s “When the Camellia Blooms” for its poor working conditions.

On October 14, the union wrote in a statement, “KBS 2TV’s currently on-air Wednesday-Thursday drama ‘When the Camellia Blooms’ is forcing its staff to work long, punishing hours of labor; pressuring them to work under a business consignment agreement rather than a standard labor contract; and is currently filming without a contract.”

According to the statement, the union held talks with the drama’s production company Pan Entertainment on October 1 in order to resolve the situation of the staff working without contracts and for the protection of labor rights.

The union made demands including a limit of 14 hours of labor per day (excluding two hours of rest), departing at the KBS Annex and dispersing at the KBS Annex, inclusion of travel time in total hours of labor in case of departing from the KBS Annex to other areas (such as Boryeong or Pohang), and the inclusion of two hours for Boryeong and four hours for Pohang in the total hours of labor in the case of returning to the KBS Annex from other areas.

The production company, however, suggested 16 hours of labor per day (excluding two hours of rest) and exclusion of travel time to other areas (such as Boryeong and Pohang) from the total hours of labor.

After the negotiation, the drama filmed for a total of 21 hours on October 4 and offered a sauna to the staff as lodging so that they could leave for filming at 11 a.m. the next day. The union stated, “They revived the long-existing evil of 20-hour filming and sauna lodging.”

The union made the same demands to the production company for the second time, and added, “We strongly condemn the production company that suggests the long period of 20 hours of filming and saunas that don’t guarantee sleep. They violate the labor rights of the staff on the set of ‘When the Camellia Blooms’ and threaten their right to health and life.”

In July, the Ministry of Employment and Labor previously announced the results of its labor supervision of four dramas—”Mother of Mine,” “My Fellow Citizens,” “Doctor Prisoner,” and “Left-Handed Wife”(literal title)—where it took corrective measures stating that the staff working on sets fell under labor contracts despite mostly working under business consignment agreements.

*** I'm happy that this drama continues to hold on to its top spot. According to Nielsen Korea, last night's EP, which was October 16 the drama recorded average nationwide viewership ratings of 11 and 13.4 percent. This is a slight decrease from last broadcast, though. :P

Why The Romance Between Gong Hyo Jin And Kang Ha Neul In “When The Camellia Blooms” Appeals To Viewers

bbcfceaffe9045a2a2fcd19fac3a5f08.jpeg?s=

Since its premiere, KBS’s “When the Camellia Blooms” has been receiving much love from viewers for the special way Dong Baek (Gong Hyo Jin) and Yong Shik (Kang Ha Neul) love each other.

Dong Baek and Yong Shik do not push and pull in the drama. The two do not engage in a vague relationship. Instead, they are honest and straightforward with their feelings. This is the reason the drama is gaining much love and praise from the public – because they show what an honest and innocent relationship is.

Spoiler

In the drama, Dong Baek is someone who lives a life that many may call “unlucky.” She was ignored as a child because she did not have a mother, and as an adult, she has to fight prejudice for having to raise a fatherless child and owning a bar.

Then, Yong Shik appears in her life, and he is the first person to not criticize her. Yong Shik realizes that it’s possible to fall in love with someone in just three seconds, and since then, he is nothing but straightforward with his feelings for Dong Baek. Despite what other people may think, he will always be on Dong Baek’s side.

Dong Baek, a woman with a negative perception of love, begins to open her heart after seeing Yong Shik’s tireless efforts. However, she is unable to enjoy it due to a series of unfortunate events in her life. This includes her mother, who abandoned her as a child, returning as an Alzheimer’s patient. As a result, Dong Baek decides to give up on her relationship with Yong Shik because she does not want to involve him in her misfortune.

However, Yong Shik does not how to give up. He does not care what kind of life Dong Baek lives. Instead, he brings Dong Baek adult diapers and blankets for her mother and says, “I almost died because I missed you so much.”

When-the-Camellia-Blooms1.jpg

In a way, Yong Shik gives Dong Baek more than just love. When seeing Dong Baek discouraged from the prejudice of society, Yong Shik feels angry. Thus, he continues to shower Dong Baek with compliments. In midst of Yong Shik’s efforts, Dong Baek begins to see what she is worth. She finally begins to hold her head up while thinking that she is someone important with Yong Shik by her side.

Spoiler

As the drama goes on, Dong Baek will continue to gain self-esteem thanks to Yong Shik. Anticipation is high whether or not Yong Shik will continue to help Dong Baek with gaining back confidence as Dong Baek faces another challenge in her life because of a serial killer named Kkabuli.

“When the Camellia Blooms” airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00 p.m. KST.

Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 14-20, 2019

by SailorJumun

dramaratings_2.jpg

Nothing too exciting to report this week, as our shows have settled into their timeslots, but still plenty to talk about. On Monday, fusion sageuk Tale of Nokdu was postponed due to a baseball game. No matter — the drama was able to maintain its decent viewership ratings when it returned on Tuesday. We also had the finale of The Great Show on Tuesday, which had a great landing of 3.2 percent.

In the latter half of the week, ratings for popular dramas When the Camellia Blooms and My Country: The New Age continued to inch upwards, while for most other dramas, they continued to inch downwards. Vagabond, The Lies Within, and Melting Me Softly, in particular, lost several viewers, with The Lies Within even joining Running Investigators in the Under 1 Percent Club. Oh well, better luck next week.
