The ladies of Jang Ok-jung get into characterby girlfriday | March 12, 2013 |

JangOkjung2.jpg

We’ve got our first promo shots from the new fusion reinterpretation sageuk Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love, starring Kim Tae-hee as the titular Jang Ok-jung, better known as the royal concubine Jang heebin, one of the most infamous femme fatales in Joseon history. Here she’s the heroine though, in a drama that takes a different (and far more factually-liberal) approach to telling her side of the story.

Jang heebin is famous for having Queen Inhyun deposed and becoming the queen consort herself, and was believed to be behind her death (by poison), and later sentenced to the same fate. In this version of the tale, her romance with King Sukjong (played by Yoo Ah-in) is described as a sincere love story. So at least at the outset, the re-imagining takes the approach that she isn’t an evil person at all, but someone who’s been misrepresented in the history books. Sounds fun, yunno, in a historically inaccurate, what-if way. And hey, if they go all conspiracy-theory about how the warring political factions were behind the rewriting of history, I could get onboard with giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Hong Soo-hyun plays Queen Inhyun, who in this version is the second lead. It would kind of be awesome if she turned out to be evil, just because she’s historically known as the victim in this story. I don’t know if they’ll stretch it that far, but her character will suffer from jealousy and begrudge Jang heebin’s relationship with the king.

Idol star Han Seung-yeon will play YET ANOTHER love interest (Dude, king, ever consider how maybe you’re the bad guy here?) sookbin Choi-sshi, another of his royal concubines. She goes from being Queen Inhyun’s water maid to royal consort, and bears a son and future king. So… these ladies sure look friendly now, but things are gonna get ugly in the drama, methinks. Is the concept of the photo shoot Last Smile Before War?

The 24-episode drama will replace Yawang and premieres April 8 on SBS.

Drama official title has been changed from "Jang Ok Jung Live in Love" to "Jang Ok Jung"

SBS TV has announced on March 13th that the title for their upcoming Mon-Tue drama will be officially shortened to just ‘Jang Ok Jung’ from the original ‘Jang Ok Jung: Live for Love’.

The drama has become a highly anticipated one for the first half of 2013, as it will present an reinterpretation of Jang Hee Bin’s life in the Joseon era, and has a cast list comprising of Kim Tae Hee, Yoo Ah In, Hong Soo Hyun, Sung Dong Il, KARA’s Han Seung Yeon, and many other. The drama will portray Jang Hee Bin as a woman involved in fashion design and cosmetics-making in the Joseon Dynasty, without any political inclinations. Jang Hee Bin isn’t a political tool or sacrificial lamb, and will show her own dreams and love life as a woman to viewers.

The production team wants to make the drama into a traditional love story, and this was a major influence in the final decision to rename the drama’s title to just ‘Jang Ok Jung’. In order to realize her love for Suk Jong (Yoo Ah In), Jang Ok Jung had to become the Queen, and their love story will undoubtedly be the main highlight of the entire drama.

The new drama will be the 9th iteration of Jang Hee Bin and we will wait to see exactly what sort of image it will be presenting on the small screen.

‘Jang Ok Jung’ will succeed ‘Queen of Ambition’ and make its debut in early April.

Kang Min-ah breaks through 30 to become little Kim Tae-hee

Kang Min-ah who took on 30 competitors for the role of little Kim Tae-hee is an issue lately.

Kang Min-ah expressed her existence and her talent at the audition with 30 other competitors.

To bring out the reality of the scene, Kang Min-ah acted in a barn scene with real fire lit to it.

Producer Boo Seong-cheol claims, "It's hard to get the viewers to concentrate on the drama -- the little character and the grown up character don't overlap. I have seen many auditioners but hadn't been able to find the right one for the role until Kang Min-ah came along".

"She was trained for about a month or so after she was chosen. She's melted into her character and it's easier to shoot".

"Jang OK-jeong" is a re-highlighted version of the character Jang Hee-bin not as a political figure but an artist. The cast is made up of Yoo Ah-in and Kim Tae-hee, both as Sook Jong and Jang Ok-jeong.
