There are thousands of songs about New York, directly and indirectly. Some are easier to analyze and carry a pretty interesting cultural significance from the past that this generation might have neglected or overlooked.

Other than the chorus I'm not too sure what else the lyrics might have to do with New York, but I suppose those with a better understanding of NYC might get it.

The Beastie Boys are from New York and they have a lot of songs referencing New York City in one way or another. That can also be said of The Strokes and Jay-Z (he has more than just "Empire State of Mind" where talks of his hometown).
