noise cancellation vs. earplugs

I was looking for earphones that block out outside sounds. I'm going to use it on my mp3 player. I'm looking for something with a good bass as well. light too.

A salesperson recommended Shure. but it's the kind of earbuds that you stick right into the ear. i just called them earplugs cuz i don't know what the term is. I bought a Panasonic noise cancellation (RP-HC70). It somewhat muffles the sound. but only to 10db, which didn't do a great job. It's comfy and the sound is good enough, but i wanted better noise cancellation

Recommendations please?
