[Queen Seon-deok] Airs May 25th, Official posters revealed

- A poster with Lee Yo-won, Ko Hyeon-jeong, Eom Tae-woong and Park Ye-jin, in addition to two posters with Lee Yo-won and Ko Hyeon-jeong

- Tagline "The one who secures the people will acquire the world and rule the ages" gives a glimpse into the drama

The special drama to commemorate MBC's 48th Anniversary [Queen Seon-deok] (script by Kim Young-hyeon and Park Sang-yeon, and directed by Park Hong-gyun and Kim Geun-hong) revealed its 3 official posters.

Lee Yo-won as Queen Seon-deok, Ko Hyeon-jeong as her greatest rival Mi-shil, Park Ye-jin as Queen Seon-deok's older twin sister Princess Cheon-myeong and Eom Tae-woong as Kim Yu-shin presented their distinctive characters on the main poster.

Along with this horizontal poster are two vertical posters that are both two-shots of the two main women, Queen Seon-deok and Mi-shil. Their positioning clearly reflect that the two are at odds.

During the actual photo shoot for the poster, both women gave off such powerful auras that the entire staff worked with abated breath and in heightened tension.

This is a peek at the upcoming war between the two women: Mi-shil, the woman at the center of power as she serves and survives three different kings; and Queen Seon-deok, who battles Mi-shil's political forces to overcome and solidifies her own political power to become Silla's first female ruler.

The main tagline is "The one who secures the people will acquire the world and rule the ages." It means that Queen Seon-deok has the ability to gather the right people by her side, and through this she will beat Mi-shil's camp and become the ruler of the world (Silla).

The impending struggle between the two women will clearly be a main focal point of the drama. And the official posters bugle the start of a new great drama that will not only stand on its own but will also continue in the tradition of great historical period pieces.

[Queen Seon-deok] will first air on May 25th.

Are they going to have a press conference where they are going to wear their costumes? I like to see the two ladies (Seondeok and Mishil) wearing their hanboks. Looks to be regal and everyone's excited to see the clash between a queen and a court lady.

[Queen Seon-deok] Kim Nam-gil as Bi-dam, "Bi-dam with both good and evil sides is perfect for me"

200905191015211_2.JPG

200905191015211.JPG

-His handsome features befit that of a Hwa-rang member!

-Posters of six characters from the drama are being advertised on the sides of buses; much attention is also given to Kim Nam-gil

Kim Nam-gil has shown various sides in his past projects, which include movies [Portrait of a Beauty] and [Hand Phone]. [Queen Seon-deok] is his return to the small screen after a 2-year hiatus. In the upcoming special drama [Queen Seon-deok] that celebrates MBC's 48th anniversary (script by Kim Young-hyeon and Park Sang-yeon, directed by Park Hong-gyun and Kim Geun-hong), Kim Nam-gil is Mi-shil's (Go Hyeong-jeong) secret son Bi-dam who eventually leads the "Rebellion of Bi-dam."

The character Bi-dam will go from good to evil, from one end of the spectrum to the extreme other end. Kim is currently immersed in the study of his character.

This is Kim's second stab at the historical period piece genre, and this time he is an antagonist. Compared to other actors his age, he has always drawn attention for choosing roles that are distinct and different. When asked why he chose to take on the role of Bi-dam, he replied, "I was really attracted to this character because he gradually transforms from good to evil. As it is with Kim Yu-shin and Kim Chun-chu, this is the first time a drama is attempting to bring the historical character Bi-dam to life, and so I'm excited to create him as my own."

To take on this role, he revisited horseback riding, and instead of just resorting to sword fighting or archery as is typical in a historical period piece, he held many discussions with the director in order to set himself aside, showing just how passionate he is.

When Kim Nam-gil showed up for the poster shoot dressed up as Bi-dam, the staff was blown away by how perfect he was as Bi-dam. Standing tall at 185cm and with a well-toned body, and on top of that very handsome features, he seemed to be the perfect Hwa-rang member. On top of that, he also gave off a sexy aura, much to the delight of the female staff members. With the disclosure of his individual posters and his inclusion in the group poster, interest towards him is expected to rise.

In reply to how he feels to be acting alongside three beautiful women - Go Hyeon-jeong, Lee Yo-won and Park Ye-jin - he replied, "It's exciting to be in a field of flowers after only working with men. Even the summer heat can't bother me now."

Kim and Eom Tae-woong are so close that Kim made a special guest appearance in the movie [Hand Phone]. "In the movie, he beat me up quite one-sidedly, but thank goodness that won't be happening in the drama. I'm so glad to be acting opposite Tae-woong since we're good friends." To Eom directly he said, "Let's always be close friends, but please, go easy on me next time. It really hurt."

The character Bi-dam in [Queen Seon-deok] is originally a good guy, someone who grows up to be a good and brave member of the Hwa-rang despite the sad back story of his birth. Yet, due to his surrounding environment, he begins to change as his hidden desires begin to come out, and he becomes enemies with Kim Yu-shin (Eom Tae-woong). Kim Nam-gil has always been successful in taking on new and different roles thanks to his good looks and his solid acting skills. His characterization of Bi-dam will soon be seen when [Queen Seon-deok] airs.

First airs: May 25, 2009

-A "veteran" historical period piece actor, seeing how this is his fourth

-Transition from child actor to adult actor with his role in [Queen Seon-deok]

“I can't be a child actor forever."

“Please look forward to my first adult role!"

Considered everyone's little brother and much loved as "Little So Ji-seob," actor Yu Seung-ho attempts his first adult role in the upcoming drama [Queen Seon-deok].

In MBC's special drama celebrating its 48th anniversary [Queen Seon-deok] (script by Kim Young-hyeon and Park Sang-yeon, directed by Park Hong-gyun and Kim Geun-hong), Yu Seung-ho is Princess Cheon-myeong's (Park Ye-jin) son Kim Chun-chu, who later becomes King Tae-jo Mu-yeol. Chun-chu becomes a leader of the Hwa-rang alongside Kim Yu-shin and later takes the throne as King Mu-yeol.

When asked how much he knew about Kim Chun-chu, he confessed, "I know that he has a very strong personality. But I haven't received all the scripts yet so I've yet to understand him completely."

Kim Chun-chu makes his first appearance around episode 20. When asked if he feels any pressure about taking on an adult role, he replied, "I've always done child roles so I'm definitely more comfortable with them, but I can't be a child actor forever. This is a step I have to take, now or someday, so I think if I keep at it I'll grow more comfortable doing adult roles."

[Queen Seon-deok] is already Yu Seung-ho's fourth historical period piece venture following [immortal Admiral Yi Sun-shin], [The King and I] and [The Legend (of the King's Four Gods)], yet that doesn't lessen the anxiety. "I get nervous each time. The lines are hard to say compared to modern dramas and it's even more nerve-wracking working with all the respected older actors, but in the end it's fun because you learn a lot more. I want to try my best."

-“My role model is An Seong-gi!”

-He likes being everyone's little brother!

Yu Seung-ho has always shown us that he is growing into an honest and upright young man through his various commercials and photo spreads, and so he is known as "everyone's little brother" and "a star of the next generation." His reaction to these qualifiers was, "On one hand, they make me feel good, but on the other hand, it's a lot of pressure. Since I'm straddling the line between being a child actor and becoming an adult actor, I need to work harder and be more careful. Though there is some pressure, I will try hard to live up to everyone's expectations."

At the cusp of becoming an adult actor, his role model is veteran actor An Seong-gi. "I respect him so much. He shows so many sides and becomes his characters so naturally. I want to become like him."

A main force behind Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms is Tae-jo Mu-yeol Kim Chun-chu, and this is Yu Seung-ho's first adult role. He will be making an appearance in the upcoming [Queen Seon-deok] which debuts on May 25th.

Scriptwriter kim YOung-Hyeon's 3+1 things to watch out

213lv8g.jpg

Having penned [seo-dong-yo] and [Jewel in the Palace], some of the greatest historical period pieces, scriptwriter Kim Young-hyeon is critically acclaimed in her field. She pinpoints three things to watch out for in her upcoming work [Queen Seon-deok]. These points of interest will help to enhance the viewing experience.

First, the overpowering charms of Mi-shil, the temptress who has an inherently devilish character.

For the greater part of the first half of the drama, Go Hyeon-jeong's chracter Mi-shil will dominate with her great charisma. Writer Kim explains, "Mi-shil will gather prominence as her strong and evil aura increases in the first half. But in the second half, Seon-deok will rise up and overcome her, therein creating an intense storyline that will excite the viewers both visually and emotionally." Mi-shil is a character who serves and survives three consecutive kings, wiling them with her temptress charms. Yet, because she is of the weaker sex, as then believed, she must instinctively fight a bitter political battle in order to survive in the palace. As a result, her actions come off as cruel, ruthless and belligerent, and they will ignite both fear and indignance within the viewers.

Since Mi-shil is characterized by the talented and captivating actress Go Hyeon-jeong, expectations are understandably high. The more evil deeds Mi-shil commits, the more overwhelming it will be when she meets her demise in the second half. Therefore Kim intends to write Mi-shil with as many facets as she can.

Second, the focus on Hwa-rang, "Silla's storehouse of national strength."

Even the illustrious and elite West Point wouldn't compare with Hwa-rang. "The organization known as Hwa-rang was an elite training center that was essentially all-purpose as well. It was the leading training grounds for future military leaders, a place of religious affairs and also taught its members to play instruments or paint." Kim also added, "This drama will paint a refreshing picture of Hwa-rang for the viewers."

At times of a political or military crisis, members of Hwa-rang would gather their opinions and present it to the authorities, and the king and his council deemed their opinion as weighty and influential. [Queen Seon-deok] will bring to life as never before seen on the small screen the Hwa-rang festival "Nang-cheon-jae" (the ceremony that celebrates the establishment of Hwa-rang as an important axis of power) as well as the Hwa-rang tradition of "Nang-jang-gyeol-ui," the act of heavily making up their faces in order to symbolize their determination that overcomes even death.

The [Queen Seon-deok] staff has even created a grand set for the main Hwa-rang training hall.

Lastly, the tagline "The one who secures the people will acquire the world and rule the ages" is the epitomized theme of the drama.

The main current in the plot stream is the political war for the throne between Queen Seon-deok's camp and Mi-shil's camp.

Both camps will fight to gain supporters in order to take over the throne. The success or failure in the process of building up trust with other people and gaining support will relate largely to the viewers of today. Kim says, "In the end, Queen Seon-deok's side just has a stronger network of trust than Mi-shil's camp. [...] This drama will develop how those networks are formed and reinforced."

+1, the incredible partnership between two great directors, Park Hong-gyun of the hit medical drama [New Heart] and Kim Geun-hong, a leader in the historical period productions with previous works like [Yi -san] [Ju-mong] and [Jewel in the Palace].

[Queen Seon-deok] is helmed by directors Park Hong-gyun of the 2008 hit medical drama [New Heart] and Kim Geun-hong, who worked alongside director Lee Byeong-hun on [Jewel in the Palace] [Ju-mong] and [Yi-san].

Two of MBC's greatest directors will create a wonderful ensemble, leading [Queen Seon-deok] towards a common goal but with two distinct yet harmonious viewpoints. This combination will undoubtedly captivate the viewers.

Additionally, sprinkle in the dream team of high-quality actors: Lee Sun-jae, Shin-gu, Lee Yo-won, Go Hyeon-jeong, Eom Tae-woong, Park Ye-jin, Jo Min-ki, Jeon No-min, Jeong Woong-in, Dok-go Young-jae, Song Ok-suk, Kim Nam-gil, Yu Seung-ho and so forth. The quality of acting is practically guaranteed, upping the ante as well as expectations.

[Queen Seon-deok] first airs on May 25th, 2009.

Scriptwriter Park Sang-yeon say's kim Nam-gil is the secret weapon Yu Seung -Ho is the final weapon

- After penning [Joint Security Area JSA] [May 18th], scriptwriter Park Sang-yeon collaborated on drama [H.I.T.] with scriptwriter Kim Young-hyeon

- Expect strong masculine details to this tale of kings (and queens) and the characters

Writers Park Sang-yeon and Kim Young-hyeon are such perfect partners that they plan to split the responsibility of writing [Queen Seon-deok] 50 to 50. On the official website's discussion board (http://www.imbc.com/broad/tv/drama/seonduk/note/index.html?list_id=1041961), Park wrote detailed explanations behind each character of the drama.

Since Kim Young-hyeon pointed out the things to watch out for in this drama, Park took the chance to give details on each character.

Park's previous works include penning both the original novel and the screenplay for [Joint Security Area JSA] and the screenplay for [May 18th]. His skillful storytelling has been praised for his innate ability to encompass both a general scope as well as intricate detailing.

[Queen Seon-deok] is the second collaboration with Kim following [H.I.T.], and the two writers are now well in sync. In Park's introductory words, he took the time to explain the important characters in layman's terms.

In the production staff's discussion board on the official website, he began with "This is scriptwriter Park Sang-yeon of [Queen Seon-deok]." He continued to write, "After spending the past year existing only in the minds of us writers or as possibilities in discussions and meetings, the characters Deok-man, Mi-shil, Yu-shin, Cheon-myeong and others are finally taking their first step into the real world and coming to life."

Regarding the leading lady Lee Yo-won (Queen Seon-deok), Park said, "Hidden within her calm and composed image was Yo-won's rough and strong side, and that was a big factor for us." He also hinted, "In the end, Deok-man will take from Mi-shil everything but Mi-shil herself."

As for Go Hyeon-jong (Mi-shil), he commented, "Hyeon-jeong has become fiercer and stronger after taking on the role. [...] Yet Mi-shil is a sad and pathetic character because she is the most female out of all our characters," and expressed his pity and affection for the character.

Park took particular interest in Bi-dam (played by Kim Nam-gil), Go Hyeon-jong's son, and defined him as the drama's special weapon. He reasoned, "He is the most complicated character of the entire series who undergoes the most extreme change."

And he went on to say that the drama's final weapon was Kim Chun-chu, to be acted by Yu Seung-ho, the adorable younger brother to women everywhere. "If Bi-dam is a character that nurtures both good and evil within, Chun-chu may be the character who has transcended beyond good and evil." He praised Yu Seung-ho heavily, saying "There is no one better fit for this role than Yu Seung-ho." He also stirred up our anticipation by stating that we'll be able to see Seung-ho's fierce and scary side for the first time through this drama.

Park ended with the final words, "I may seem confident but in fact am wrought with worries and fear. [...] No matter what happens during the 6 months of airing, we will trust one another and always do our best."

[Queen Seon-deok] will debut on May 25th (Monday).
