Why Psy and not JYP?

I just watched Psy perform live in New York City's Rockefeller Center on NBC's Today Show, a venue usually reserved for the most popular of international singers.

I mean, you can't get much more mainstream than that in the U.S. Wait. And the song just hit No. 1 in iTunes in 17 countries across the world. Wait again. Psy was just parodied in Saturday Night Live, reaching the pantheon of international stardom. This is getting ridiculous. Next, they will be inviting him to the White House and Buckingham Palace.

The problem is, for the life of me, I can't figure out why. I admit that the song is catchy, silly, and fun. Then again, there are a lot of catchy, silly, and fun songs out there.

One, the video is in Korean, not English; non-Korean speakers have no idea what he's singing about except a little snippet of, "Sexy Lady". Two, no offense, but Psy is not exactly eye-candy; in fact, he's proudly anti-visual in the Korean pop culture where youth and good looks are regularly deified. Three, the video has no story that people can relate to; it's not like there is a Susan Boyle or Paul Potts making people cry with their diamond in the rough stories. Four, despite what some analysts are saying, this video is not a social statement against the conspicuous consumption culture of Gangnam; I mean, can someone seriously tell me that there is a hidden social message in the utter randomness that is this video? Five, the whole context is strictly Korean; by that, I mean that it's geared toward the Korean market entirely, featuring symbolism, scenes, and characters that would only be recognizable by Koreans or someone who has lived in Korea. Who in the world would get a kick out of Yoo Jae-seok in his yellow suit and Noh Hong-cheol gyrating unless you are Korean or can recognize them? It's as inside a joke as you can get.

So, basically, a totally story-less, absolutely random, very Korean music video performed by an ordinary–looking 34-year-old Korean rapper of a rather rotund persuasion has taken the world by storm. Go figure.

Which is probably what JYP is mumbling to himself right now as he cries himself to sleep at night. I mean, he ran the Wonder Girls ragged throughout the U.S. opening for Justin Bieber and even managed to put himself on the cover of Billboard Magazine to get on the mainstream pop culture radar but didn't even get a blip.

So why Psy and not JYP, when it actually should be the other way around? That's the $64,000 question. Is it that celebrities such as Britney Spears have jumped on the bandwagon to provide the fuel to Psy's rocket?

Dr. Ines Mergel, Assistant Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, provides this astute analysis in her blog: "This example shows that viral campaigns need the support of so-called network stars ― nodes in a network with a very prominent position who are connected to many other nodes. The messages are snowballing through the network and repeated (or retweeted and shared) over and over again".

Mergel's analysis, however, is missing one thing. Who built the bandwagon that the network stars jumped on? In other words, who provided that initial push of social media support (in terms of YouTube views, Tweets, and Facebook Likes, etc.) that got this video over the critical mass of global awareness that propelled it to its viral glory?

This video, right after its release, hit it big in Korea, which is not a huge surprise. But what was surprising was that the initial Korean popularity had enough social media reach and power to influence non-Asians ― in fact, Americans ― to begin noticing and liking the video. And once it resonated in America, it became a global phenomenon.

If we look at the global social network as a holistic system, we know that the U.S. is one of the key central nodes with the greatest number of connections and influence. Therefore, an American star almost inevitably becomes a star globally.

But what we just saw was that Korea's social media footprint has gotten big enough to directly inject itself into America's social media consciousness. Before, if you were a star in Korea, you were a star in Korea. Then it became; if you were a star in Korea, you became a star in Asia. Now, Psy has shown that if you are a star in Korea, you could be a star in the U.S., which means that you have a good chance of becoming a global star.

In other words, there had been enough social capital built up in the global social media system for K-pop ― with enough key nodes connecting between the two clusters (U.S. pop and K-pop) ― that Psy's Korea-based social media popularity was able to cash in globally.

In a way, Psy was the recipient of all the hard work done by JYP (Park Jin-young), Wonder Girls, Rain, Se7en, and others who came and failed before him to hit it big in America. They might have not quite got there, but all of their efforts built up enough critical mass of awareness and enjoyment of K-pop within the social media system so that Psy was able to bounce over and make a huge splash.

So, the question isn't, "Why Psy and not JYP?" The explanation really is: "Psy, because of JYP".

[KCM] :'Pyo Ju Yeol', do you like to watch performances?
[Pyo Ju Yeol] : Of course I do. I like all kinds of performances.
[Rain] : What is your most memorable performance?
[Pyo Ju Yeol] : It was pop group 'Wild Chrysanthemum's performance.

(1) Singer 'Jang Hye Jin's 'Bad Person'.
[Pyo Ju Yeol] : 'Jang Hye Jin' has a powerful voice and outstanding singing ability.
She is staying in the public’s good graces, quickly making her way up once again.
She was a vocal trainer before her debut as a singer, and she went to USA to study at Berklee College Of Music in 2002 while working as a singer.
Recently she even participated in the O.S.T. for the famous drama 'Shiny'.

[Rain] : I think 'Jang Hye Jin's unique voice and laid-back style are striking a chord among music lovers.

[Pyo Ju Yeol] : It is said their 800,000 concert tickets were sold out in 12 minutes.
[Rain] : I really envy them. I can't hide my eagerness to have a concert.

[Rain] : This music produces a desire to go to the beach with my beautiful girl friend while I'm driving a wrangler car with a hamburger in my hand, but then I causes a traffic accident. (laughs)

Listener 'Adolescence', "I guess I am going through puberty these days. I'm getting all steamed up about nothing. Will time solve the problem?"
Everyone goes through a stormy period of adolescence, so please don't worry too much.
[Rain] : Our family's fortune was on the wane during my puberty, so I wasn't allowed to experience puberty. Just thinking about that time makes me feel sorry to myself. I was already forward for my years and never wavered from my desired goal at that time. I heard KCM was in the same situation.
[KMC] : However, I think I experienced puberty. I'm way off base? (laughs)

My ex-boyfriend couldn't play the piano at all at first but he diligently learned how to play the piano and made it after all in order to please me. I was impressed by his sincerity.

[Rain] : Listener 'The Stump Of A Pencil', "I've dated with her since I dropped across her at the reunion in 15 years. I really want to marry her, but she wants to stay single forever. She (28 years old) is hanging tough so I've failed in persuading her to marry me. What can I do?"
Please don't force her to make a decision. She can be far too young to get married, and I think time will solve the problem.

[KCM] : As a woman has a maternal instinct, surely she'll want to marry and have a baby someday.
[Rain] : Just dating with her can make him happy, don't you think so? (laugh)
[KCM] : You're right!
[Rain] : Don't you thing? (think so?) (laughs)
[KCM] : OK, don't you thing. (laughs)
[Rain] : I'd like to give the couple a piece of advice. Please love each other happily.

[KCM] : By the way, 'Kim So Jung', do you believe in remaining single?
[Kim So Jung] : Not at all. I really want to get married.
[KCM] : I can't understand why there are such people who don't want to marry in the world.
[Rain] : As each of people has a different identity, I think we should accept diversity.
[KCM] : If they don't marry, surely they'll live to regret it.
[Rain] : (Interpreting KCM) (laughs), the next song is Bruno Mars' "Marry You".

[Rain] : Listener '#5780', "I'm sure she'll dearly love to marry after she is 30."
I think so, too. Women change their mind with the change of seasons as they change their mind easily.

[Rain] : As time goes on, their friendship may deepen into love over the years and marry. I think he should let time shape.

[Rain] : I also change my mind many times throughout the course of a day as sometimes I think I like KCM ; other times I don't. (laughs)However, KCM is like a girlfriend to me. (laughs) I'm uneasy and feel something's missing in my heart without him. (laughs)
[KCM] : I feel as if I have Rain watching over me. (laughs)
So I'm also uneasy without him. (laughs) He has no equal as a hulk of a protector who can watch over me. (laughs)
[Rain] : Anyway, I want to advise listener #7011 to give it some time.

[Rain] : Listener 'Walnut Cereal', "I believe that marriage would diminish me, reduce my options."
When a woman gets married and has babies, it is hard for her to relax and take time for herself. As actually there has been a complete role reversal with the man staying at home and the woman going out to work in many marriages, they can shuffle the cards.
I think KCM can take good care of his baby and do 100 percent of those jobs at home. (laughs) Moreover, he can chat with middle aged women. (laughs)
[KCM] : As far as chatting with middle aged women is concerned, I'm by far the best. (laughs)
[Rain] : I am too embarrassed to lift my head up because KCM really has a cool cheek. (laughs) He is like a middle aged woman. (laughs)
He also likes to put his finger in others' pie. (laughs)
[Kim So Kung] : I think KCM has a certain charm about him. (laughs)
[Rain] : His attractiveness is just due to his firm body. (laughs)

[Kim So Kung] : Listener 'Gallery Park', "I have an unrequited love for someone older from my major department. He seems more interested in me and even does light petting romantically, but I've found out he has a girl friend whom he has dated for a long time. I can't decide whether to reject him."
I think he is a low-rent guy. (laughs)
He must approach her with bad intentions. (laughs)
[KCM] : In my opinion, he's approached her on purpose since he heard a rumor that she loves him.
[Rain] ; She'd better make a clean breast of it, and he must offer definite answers concerning whom he will date with.

When he was transferred to our unit, how did you feel?

[Jung Joon Yil] : It's singer 'Yun Jong Shin' who has done various things.
'Yun Jong Shin' was born on October 15, 1969.
His wife "Jeon Mi Ra" was a great tennis player, and he is a father of three.
He started his career in show business by singing in 1990, and his debut song was "An Empty Street". He did activities as a guest performer for pop group "015B" at that time. Since then he's made his name as a broadcaster.
Recently he is also pursuing an acting career.
[KCM] : I don't think he is fit for such work. (laughs)

[Jung Joon Yil] : Also he has got involved even in composing film music.
Since his debut in 1990, he's released many albums and many of his songs have been smash hits.
[Rain] : Sergeant "Yim Joo Howan", the leader of our unit, is now watching us over there. So, 'Jung Joon Yil', please work harder to meet his expectation. (laughs)

[Jung Joon Yil] : I've heard 'Yun Jong Shin' releases a new single album every month. It is said he works all day without a break.

Rain Admitted to the Hospital; May Be Discharged From Army Prematurely

Rain has been admitted to the hospital to undergo examination and tests for his back.

According to the Defense Media Agency (DEMA), in which Rain is currently serving his mandatory military duties in, Rain began experiencing severe pain in his back beginning on the evening of September 23 and received permission to be admitted to a hospital to be examined.

The DEMA representative shared Rain has undergone a thorough checkup and is currently receiving treatment. The source of the pain is believed to be a herniated disk but the official stressed that the results of the test must come out first for them to be sure.

Rain’s planned appearance and schedule with DEMA have been cancelled for the time being and many are now wondering if the injury will allow Rain to be discharged from the military early as is the case for active soldiers when such a medical condition is serious enough.

Singer Rain (Jung Ji Hoon), who is currently serving in the Army, was recently hospitalized due to back pain.

According to Army officials on September 24, Rain did not participate in the officers and men of the armed forces star audition ‘Be The Star,’ which was held on the same day in South Chungcheong province.

Rain was going to appear at the audition as a jury member but he was suddenly hospitalized on September 23 with a sore back.

A spokesperson for the Defense Media Agency says, “We announced that Rain would not attend the audition due to back pain. We have to check the details to see how he is doing.”

As a result, no one knows whether or not Rain will do his official schedules in the future. It’s not sure if he can attend the celebration for the Armed Forces Day on September 25. Army officials said, “We can’t grasp the exact situation. We will consider his health condition for his future schedules.”

Rain joined the Army in November of last year and is currently serving his duty at the Defense Media Agency.

During the phone call with "Dispatch" on the 24th, Rain's agency "Rainy Entertainment" expressed, "Last night, Rain was complaining of pain in his lower back and went into the hospital to undergo tests for the pain. He was absent even for a military audition event held in Gyeryong City's Culture &Art Complex on the very day."

Meanwhile, Rain had served as a teaching assistant in the 5th Division since his enlistment in October, 2011. He's served as a PR soldier there since he was transferred to Defense Media Agency last March.

Singer Rain was hospitalized last night for sudden back pain.

Singer Rain was hospitalized two nights ago with a sudden back pain.

On Sunday, according to a member of the Defense Information Service, Rain was unable to attend as a judge for the military final audition “Be The Star.”

They added, “Rain was to attend as a final judge, but due to back pain, he was hospitalized. It is stated that it is due to a herniated disc, and he is currently being treated.”

It is also said that he will not be able to join the event for ‘The Armed Forces Day,’ on the 25th.
