2008년 '나만 바라봐'가 수록된 태양의 첫 미니앨범 [Hot]은 가요계에 기록될만한 센세이션이었다. 마니아들만이 찾던 R&B 장르를 태양은 '나만 바라봐'를 통해 대중에게 가까이 풀어내며 대중과 평단으로부터 이례적인 찬사를 이끌어냈다. 스튜디오 앨범뿐만 아니라 잘 짜인 한편의 뮤지컬과 같은 태양의 무대는 가요계 수준을 한 차원 끌어 올렸다는 극찬을 받기에 충분했다. 그 후로 2년이 지난 지금 음악 팬들이 원하고 무엇보다 태양 자신이 원했던 첫 정규앨범 [solar]가 공개된다. 미니앨범에 이어 이번 앨범에서도 역시 공동프로듀서로 이름을 올린 태양은 앨범명 [solar]가 의미하는 것처럼 가수가 되기로 다짐한 13살부터 지금 23살까지, 10년간 꿈꿔 온 태양의 음악을 이번 앨범에 담아냈다.

타 이틀곡 'I need a girl'은 신예 프로듀서 전군의 곡으로 연습생 시절부터 태양과 오랜 기간 동거 동락해 온 지드래곤이 피처링으로 참여해 기대를 모으고 있는 곡이다. 쉬운 멜로디와 감미로운 태양의 보컬이 인상적인 'I need a girl'은 태양의 이상형이자 모든 남성들의 이상형을 노래한 '21세기 희망사항'이라 할 수 있다. 이외에도 앨범에는 'Superstar'나 'Break down'같은 화려하고 웅장한 비트의 곡들부터 'Just a feeling'같은 하우스 비트의 곡과 몽환적이면서 따뜻한 느낌의 로즈피아노와 태양의 매력적인 보컬만으로 가득 채운 이뤄진 'You're my' 등 정규앨범에서만 들을 수 있는 곡들로 채워졌다. 지난 해 발표한 'Where u at'과 'Wedding dress'를 통해 작곡에 참여하며 음악적 성장에 노력을 아끼지 않고 있는 태양은 [solar]를 통해서도 인트로 곡인 'Solar'을 비롯하여 'Just a feeling' 'Take it slow' 등의 작곡에 참여하며 자신만의 색깔을 내기 위해 노력했다. 첫 솔로앨범 이후 2년 동안 누구보다 치열하게 고민하고 준비해온 태양의 이야기 [solar]가 이제 곧 시작된다.
