I am really liking the show...but if they can just tone down the soundtrack.  I mean I love the songs individually.  I just don't need to be knocked down with it. I get it...always love...everytime i see you... this love. Since it is pre-produced, can't they do a better job with that?  Don't bash me for this complaint.  I really do like the show.  Would love it if I didn't have to lower the sound.

My plane is delayed so I caught pieces of it when I could get the stream.  I think there are some key parts where you have to understand Korean to know what is going on so I am going to summarize as I best remember it.

- MY works at an university-affiliated hospital.  She was hoping to become a professor. She was initially rejected because she was considered too young.  The second time she was rejected due to something else. (i forgot what.)  Third time, that brunette got it because she is the daughter of a chaebol.  MY asked dept. chair (her boss) when will skills be the requisite to get professorship.  He dismissed her off.  To add insult to injury, the brunette orders MY to do the broadcast since the brunette is now her superior as a professor and she will be drinking at dinner.  That is why she was crying in the hallway while practicing lines.  Of course, she did so well on the broadcasts that she became famous for it and got her professorship.  (it was funny how patients came to her due to the broadcasts but none were sick; one kept bringing in DNA samples to see if his grandchild was really his.)

- MY and SJ broke up, at least the part I could hear, due to their different philosophical stance on the value of life.  I presume he had to run off again from the date.  She asked if had to go off by helicopter again. He said, he went somewhere close by.  When asked what he does, he said top secret.  MY said hopefully not a spy and then asked if he always gets hurt on the job.  Then, she starts talking about the evidence she has seen, such as his bullet wounds, knife wound, head wound etc, and determines that he must protect himself from being killed so he must kill as well.  She works all day in surgery to save lives of those wounded, yet he must work to kill.  SJ says he is a soldier and must follow orders even if sometimes he may disagree.  However, he believes strongly in the honor of his job that protects so that his family, MY family can live in a world that is peaceful.  MY says at some point the importance of life for her as a doctor.  At the end, she says I regret that you don't seem to be the destined man I have been waiting for and says sorry and she must go.  He says he understands and thanks her for the time because he had enjoyed it.  My take was that MY was very interested but was afraid to develop the relationship when he fundamentally works in an area that is she opposes.    

- Director Lee comes to their dining table and asks MY to have dinner with him tonight.  MY wonders if she has just been asked out on a date; others at the table said they think she has been.  She goes to his hotel/apartment?  She asks if they weren't supposed to have dinner at a sky lounge.  He said look there is the sky, and lounge.  We can order food and enjoy also afterwards.  You must have heard of my forceful/impatient personality.  He asks do you want to wash up first or should I, then starts taking off his clothes.  She rushes towards him.  He said you were not going to hit me.  She hits him.  Then, with her friend, MY wonders how she could have done such a thing and how she will not be able to meet his eyes at the meeting.  He sends her to Uruk as representative of the hospital (Uruk is where the big backer of the hospital has a lot of construction investments.)  At the Uruk airport (more like a airstrip), he calls MY's colleague because she is not answering her phone.  He says to her, if she is enjoying the hot weather.  If she will change her mind, he has many excuses to bring her back right away.  She basically calls him a son of a ..... and tells him to shove it.

@ck1Oz - I hope you didn't feel like your comments were a personal attack or something.  I didn't intend that.  So sorry about it if that is the way it came across. I also do not read every page or comment so I agree that soompi is just a good place to share your thoughts regardless of viewpoint.  I appreciate those threads that are welcoming without attack, so I feel horrified if my post came across that way.  I also loved Reply 1988 so enjoy!

I just listened to Chen's full OST and it is really catchy. I am so glad the OSTs for this show is turning out to be so good.  

Now that I am off work, I thought to recap/translate some of my favorite scenes but I see english subs are out at some places and almost done at Viki.  So I hope you all enjoy it!

Sneaking in during a break, and happy to see the rating numbers.  I wouldn't be surprised if it drops a little bit since people also want to check out Rain's new show.  

@ilovesjk - I am glad it is only 16 episodes.  I have not seen good 20 episodes in a long time.  I just want the writing and acting to get and remain tight.  

@ck1Oz - While I think some of the dialogue is a bit on the comical side, I think it is better than the first episode of Cheese in the Trap or OMV. And who watches KES's shows for reality?   I am surprised that you say the military scenes are so bad; they are better than many others I have seen on TV.  (many of my fam and friends are in military/police).  They hold the guns correctly, unlike many cop shows.  I do know someone who has been helicoptered out of the hospital, who was in the military, but he was a pretty big shot military CH/ER surgeon needed at another hospital for organ transplant.  Give the show a chance, for more than SJK.

Last comment before I really do have to go, I saw lots of comments on Naver and Nate that are far more positive than any misgivings. Yes, there are comments that day the story is to fast or childish, but a lot more talking about how they were mesmerized and didn't realize how fast the hour went and their like the mystery aspect as well as the dynamic chemistry of the leads. I am not sure where people are reading the netizen comments.

They didn't exchange numbers. She got it, probably from his medical file for the appointment. At least that is what SJK suggests.

I think SHK character ( because I can't recall their names) is intrigued by SJK due to their past history of JW "stealing" away the guy she liked in the past.  And there was some confusion as to who is JW's boyfriend at first. That is why when JW bad mouthed the men, HK said that was a good enough for her. Your enemy is my friend type of thing.

My internet went down so couldn't watch it live. It was better than I thought it would be. The dialogue was crackling and super wry.  At times, it reminded me of the Hong sisters.  For example, at the end, SJK character didn't really ask directly whether SHK character liked him or not, the way it seems to have been interpreted here.  He apologized that circumstances artist and he had to take a rain check on their date. She saw the helicopter coming and said it must be an emergency do they have to move out of the way. He said no, they are coming for me. She goes, why you, omg, are we at war? He smiles and says somewhere there is and that he will explain it all later. Then hee looked at her and grabbed her shoulders, saying time is short now, but he promised to come back in a week and whether she will go out to a movie with him then. She looked bewildered. He says, maybe here time is short, I have to go (i am doing all this from memory). Then comes the phrase "like or hate", which in context refers to his proposal for a movie date. But there is the underlying innuendo of do you like me or not.  It's th is double entendre that reminds me of the Hong sisters.

The boys scenes were full of great dialogue too.  I have to get back to work unfortunately. I can't wait to see episode two although that will have to wait a while for me. Alas.

Yes, I speak/understand Korean.  But I grew up in the States so if they use a lot of slang, I have harder time following. (Reply 1988 was hard to recap, for example).  I can recap while streaming if I can find a good link.

I was ambivalent to this but the teasers with great chemistry between the leads, and especially the music, is making me curious.  Please let it be more like secret garden or secret than heirs.  I like the leads. Please let SHK be more vivacious like her earlier roles than the winter...which was so blah.  Pretty but blah, really to no fault of SHK I think.

Finally, it is time.  This is the first thought MooSung had when Taek had called from the training center to say this evening I have something to tell you.  After focusing all that time on raising him and watching him grow, MooSung know how much Taek had liked, no loved DeokSun all that time.  He wanted to make sure DeokSun went with Taek to China at that time.  He knew Taek would be most comfortable with DeokSun besides him.  Even with him, Taek did not eat.  But with DeokSun calling him, Taek ate.  Ever since then, MooSung knew this day will come.  

When Taek was young, there was a time when Taek and DeokSun wrestled and Taek's forehead got hurt when he was thrown to the ground.  As Taek cried and cried in front of his dad, there was DeokSun next to him bawling her eyes out.  After seeing Taek's blood flowing from his forehead, Il Hwa yelled and scolded DeokSun.  Seeing it, Taek interrupted while crying "It wasn't DeokSun's fault.  We were just playing around.  Please stop scolding her."  Scolding Il Hwa and angered MooSung could only stop and laugh.  MooSung often thought about that day.  Even after he was treated and received scolding, Taek took DeokSun to his room to sleep.  

My son has depth and big heart.  After his mother died, he grew up quickly and stopped talking about his mother in order not to sadden MooSung.  Taek would say "she is now watching over us" with a smile on his face.  With that kind tone, he also gave his approval for marriage to SunYoung.  After marriage, he treated SunYoung, SunWoo and JinJoo like family.

That boy one day came home with a ring on his hand.  No matter who looked at it, it was a couple ring.  MooSung continuously stared at that ring whenever he saw it.  Taek would not wear it when the family ate together, but he would wear it other times.  On the days of matches, the ring would again disappear but MooSung saw a necklace with the ring.  Perhaps, if the reporters saw the ring, then they would ask, but MooSung couldn't ask Taek to confirm.  Still, that couple ring never left his body.  MooSung wondered who wore the other half of the couple ring but had a good idea.  MooSung thought he knew well the reason why Taek never wore the couple ring to family gatherings, why Taek would not raise it, so he never asked anyone.

"Good evening ahjuhssi."  DeokSun greeted Moosung warmly with a smile.  MooSung instinctively stared at DeokSun's left hand, but there was no ring.  Strange....He was sure that the ring would be on DeokSun's hand.  MooSung looked at her neck but couldn't really see it.  Suddenly he saw what seemed to be shape of a ring through DeokSun's v-neck shirt.  Ah, what should be is happening thought MooSung.  DeokSun must be wearing the ring as a necklace for the same reason as his son, the dread of affecting the neighborhood.

What should I do...When SunWoo and Bora said they wanted to get married, MooSung actually had thought of Taek and DeokSun.  If those two get married, then will Taek and DeokSun be able to get married...When the article came out and Noeul shouted it to everyone, it seemed Dong Il and Il Hwa were against it.  Marriage between same family name and now double-in-law marriage!  MooSung, however, could not oppose SunWoo and Bora's marriage just to make his boy happy.  Also, after raising his kind but stubborn boy, MooSung thought there was no way a parent could oppose the sincere by firm look in SunWoo, even if he had never once opposed his mother.  Thus, he comforted SunYoung a little as he could.

"We are here." "Oh, are you here?  DeokSun is with you too?  Have you eaten?"  "Yes, we already ate."  Seeing Taek arrive with DeokSun, MooSung sat down in his place.  Since he said he had something to say to you, SunYoung tried to leave discreetly, but both MooSung and Taek begged her to sit and listen.  She could not leave this important discussion when both MooSung and Taek considered her an important family member.  Even SunWoo told both of them about his marriage desires.

DeokSun's hands were blue and shivering.  She wasn't exactly sure what their responses would be but was certain they would not bless them.  Believing them, she had braced herself but still her entire body shook.  To assure her, Taek took her hand but even Taek's hands shook a bit.  In front of MooSung and SunYoung, Taek and DeokSun knelt.  Seeing Taek on his knees in formal sitting position, MooSung let out a small sigh.  After receiving scolding once as a child, Taek had never done anything to get scolded and here he was now in formal sitting position.

"We want to get married, dad.  I have loved DoekSun for a long time now.  We have been dating for two years.  I am sorry I couldn't tell you before."

They were both wearing the couple rings they had kept hidden on necklaces.  "Two years?  Two years?  Why didn't you speak up before?" asked SunYoung.  Taek responded, "I wanted to tell you the day the article came out since we had already been dating then.  But DeokSun said the adults were already having a hard time with SunWoo and Bora's marriage so the adults would suffer a shock if we announced our relationship then.  DeokSun asked that we inform elders once time passed a bit."

Hearing this, SunYoung refrained from asking the questions in her mind.  Yes, DeokSun was that kind of a child.  As a middle child, she would have missed out on much, but she always was aware of her surroundings and tried to comfort people.  That is why she thought DeokSun could be a good match for Taek way back when but SunWoo and Bora's marriage made that difficult.  Feeling bad towards both Taek and MooSung, SunYoung could now only look at the ground.

"Taek-ah."  MooSung didn't need any other explanation.  At some point, he no longer needed to tell Taek to reduce taking his medicing and sleeping pills.  He knew it was all due to DeokSun.  Now, in front of him, Taek would not look in his eyes and instead only stared at his lips while kneeling before him.

"People may curse at you.  Double-in-law marriage is not an easy thing.  It is not just you, but our entire family, DeokSun's family who will face difficult times.  Is that still ok?"  

"That is better than not having DeokSun next to me."  

"What about you DeokSun?"

"I know it will be difficult.  But I also need Taek beside me."

"SunYoung-ah.  What do you think?"

"Oppa.  You said this to me before.  To children, there are no parents who can win.  I don't oppose this, especially after not opposing SunWoo and Bora' s marriage."

"Do DeokSun's parents know?

"No, not yet.  We are going to visit them next."

"For your dad...if those two say ok, then you have my blessing.  I know how long you have loved DeokSun.  If it is not you two, who will you marry?"

Dad...tears came to Taek's eyes.  Of course, dad already knew everything.  Taek knew how long MooSung had thought over this problem and suffered through it.  "Thank you dad."  

"Thank you." Deoksun also said.  She didn't think one household will give blessing so easily.  Taek grabbed her hand and gave her a bright grin.  "Now, let's go to your house.  Your parents will be waiting."

Sorry I couldn't translate more.  Although I don't enjoy clue hunting like you guys and disagree with some of their logic, and tone, of those posts, I am happy to help out friends in this room that welcomed courteous discourse.

I actually think the chocolate was for SunWoo and DS was faking it in the future to save Taek's pride. I don't ascribe to the view that everything had to point to Taek and that was the writer's intent.  I think one important aspect of this show was about DukSun's growth through her youth and young adulthood.  It was perfectly fine for her to have crush, and in fact necessary for her to learn who she was and how she loves. She poured her thoughts and process into her diary. She may have done so for JH too but we don't see it. None of that takes away from her love of Taek. 

I think it is clear that Taek realized DukSun liked SW at some point by hitting SW after reading some part of the diary entry. I think DukSun tore that page because it clearly says his name and shows the depth of her despair at the time. I did something similar: I should have just burned the entire diary and instead tore only a few pages only to have my hubby figure out that his former best friend had liked me.  Ugh.  Tangent.

I guess my point is not everything needs to tie to Taek and it would not minimize one iota DukSun's love for Taek, and vise versa.

There are four more pages that @hafunohane sent me that I can make out some words but I need a clearer picture.  Even the second set you sent me has some problems, but here is what I can make out.  I can't figure out how to post the picture here.  

I think the first one has a date of 1988.9.20 with two sunflowers and leaves on the top; it is a page on the right side.  From what I can make out.  "...house silent(?) ... time. That is why a more painful time.  My heart towards you does not want to rest or sleep.  One said people are wired to express.  Thus, today, I gathered up my courage and gave him chocolate."    

The page on the left still has fuzzy parts and words cut off so this is what I can make out: ...together..[illegible words] made me feel as the day passed [guessing because the first two words dictate grammar].  Why couldn't I have been more patient? With this regret, I need to figure out way to bear through and solve my pain? [can only read the first character.]  How come I know what pains me or when I am in pain [both can be correct from the wording], but I can't notice another's pain. ... I really felt deeply today that I must become a person who can be patient and lead while starting first good acts. 

the left page with fewest words with date in the middle of 1988.9._1.  I can't make out the first line.  "It would be good if I can approach it with calmness, coolness, and courage. [word cut off].  love too."

Sorry I can't make sense of the right page, too many words are fuzzy and the angle of the half open page makes it hard to make out DS's characters.  She tends to crunch some, although generally she write very clearly.

A round has passed.  SW and BR passed through each household over time and weathered the storm.  After working at it, they received approval.  With the parents' blessings, they held their wedding.

Lovey dovey.  During that time, Taek and DS continued dating and it grew deeper.  In the beginning, Taek also wanted to just get married, but after enjoying the warm and fun dating period with  DS, he thought the dating was not bad.  Of course, after that one time press release, they had to be careful where they met on their dates.  And thus, one year passed and another year passed.  

The ssangmundong adults saw how well SW and BR lived together and believed in them.  Now, they reflected on why the same familial name was such a problem and started to forget the concerns they had.  They of course did not know of Taek and DS's relationship.  As with all relationships, they had times whey they fought.  The latest was over the couple rings Taek wanted.  DS, however, saw how SW and BR's relationship was discovered through them suddenly appearing with their couple rings in front of their moms.  DS was afraid they will also be disclovered if they wore couple rings.  Plus, Taek does not like wearing anything for his baduk matches and DS thought it would make him feel uncomfortable trying to grip a baduk stone during a match with a ring on his finger.  But hearing this just made Taek sad.

"Taek-ah, are you mad?  But seriously, you don't like to wear anything on your fingers due to discomfort.  Also, the reporters will notice..."

"So what? If they ask, I will just say it is a couple ring.  And if the ring is uncomfortable in my hands, I can wear it on a necklace during matches."

"What if the adults notice?"

"Isn't it time to tell our parents if they notice?  It has been two years already."

Inside Taek's bag for many days were the couple rings that he wanted to wear with DS.  He thought for sure that DS as a girl would love the couple rings so he worked hard in trying to pick out the right ones.  He wanted to give it to her when the time seemed right.  He never thought DS would come out so strongly against it.  It made him mad.  "How long are we going to keep hiding?  I want us to get married now."

Sadness.  I didn't want to bring up marriage in this way.  In hearing the catch in Taek's voice, DS was bewildered.  "We are definitely going to get married.  I haven't changed.  We haven't changed.  Right?  Taek-ah..."

Next day.  Taek called SW.  SW and Bora met Taek.  "I think it is time now for me to tell our parents so ...I wanted to tell you two first."  "Ok...yes.  Thank you for all this time Taek.  Waht does DS say?"  "That is why I wanted to talk to you.  DS doesn't want us to tell our parents yet.  But I think it is now time."

Taek was always like this.  He always heard out DS but if he believed something must be done, then he would make it happen.  Like the time when he believed he had to run to DS even if it meant he had to forfeit the first round of the match, he would set his entire mind and body to make it happen.

That night.  Taek went to pick up DS at the airport.  He took her to a very nice restaurant to eat.  He had asked Manager Yu for recommendation and found the place.  "What surprice...you know places like this?"  "Are you ok with this place?  Do you like it?"  "Yes, its amazing."

Surrounded by the candlelight in the restuarant, Taek brought out the ring he desperately wanted to give DS.  "DS-ah.  Do you have the turtle I gave you?  Today, though I really want to give you something else.  This ring."  

"Taek.  Taek-ah..."

"I can't wait any more.  Enough time has passed.  When we ask for approval, we will face difficult times.  Now, I think is the time to start.  DS-ah.  Trust me please and follow my lead.  I only need you by my side.  So please accept this ring.  Couldn't you accept it today?"

Verge of tears.  Recalling when Taek confessed his love and all the six years of suffering and seeing the tears welling in his eyes, DS braced herself and seized all the doubts in her heart and nodded.  Taek slowly crossed the table and reached for her hand and placed the ring on her finger.  DS also placed the ring on Taek's finger.  "We may have difficult times in the future...but I am definitely going to marry you.  I told SW and Bora-noona today.  They are going to help us..I love you DS."

The night the dating article came out, SunWoo (SW) and Bora were together like always, in the alley holding hands.

"SW-ya...you saw this, right? What do you think?  Taek and DS..."

In SW's mind, he knew from years ago that how sincere Taek's eyes were when he said he thought he would die without DS.

Unable to sleep he kept taking those sleeping pill to soothe his heart/mind.

After breaking up with Bora, and going crazy, I stayed up late to study and go to lab early in the morning, only to have to borrow and take those sleeping pills to fall asleep.  SW knew his own crazed heart so he had not asked what happened...still guessed it must have something to do with DS.

"No.  You know our relationship.  Are we the type to change so easily?"

Looking at the worried adults, Taek responded so.  Then proceeded to go home and let out a big sigh.  After a few days, SW, BR, Taek and DS met up near SW's hospital for a beer or two.

"Sis, why did you ask to meet up?  SW, you too? Did you want to buy us dinner while talking about your upcoming wedding?"

Seeing the slight awkward atmosphere, DS brightly started talking but SW and Bora hesitated.

"Ya, Choi Taek.  The newspaper article was telling the truth, huh."  In trying to solve this problem, SW thought the only way to go is to ask directly.  SW stared directly into Taek's eyes.  

"...Yeah."  While noticing DS's glance, Taek believed it was best to answer truthfully now rather than let things escalate.

"How can you answer that way right now!!!!"  DS shouted.  In seeing her rough response, SW and Taek glanced at each other and smiled.

"DS-ah.  Ya. That boy, six years ago confessed to me that he would die without you.  Am I an idiot?  Choi Taek said that to me and now I am supposed to believe this is untrue?"

Listening in on the friends' conversation, Bora's eyes glistened with tears.  "Why?  Why did you deny it?"

"DS said to lie.  That we needed more time."

"Ah, SBR, what was I supposed to say?  Yes, you are correct.  We are dating.  You are facing difficulties with SBR and SSW wanting to get married even with the same last names and on top of it we want to have married-in-laws also get married too?"

"I said we should just tell the truth to the parents... But DS said if we did that, you two possibly would not be able to get married."
