  1. now that there are new rumors that the CQL broadcast in Korea will have deleted scenes, I’m desperately trying not to get my hopes up bc back in July I remember reading that one their body doubles said they DID film the WWX falling out of the tree scene. maybe its just a figment of my imagination maybe not but...korea I’m gonna have to trust you this time

I have been lurking on this site all along and loving both the comments and the show; I came out to ask one question: in ep 46/47 where Lan Zhan gives Wei Ying a spell to help save Wen Ning (in Yunping City), where did he get that from? Did he make it himself?

that spell is made by WWX. it is implied that WWX gave his paper spells to LWJ back in ep 11, and the Yunping City scene is to show thar LWJ has kept them for 16 yrs.

  3. just realized my favorite review channel got another Eng sub video, this time on the topic of how to make BL drama adaptions successful. CQL is of course is the forefront example of how it overcomes a dark past and she also brings up a lot of older adaptions as examples. anyway pretty funny info vid if you want to know about CQL's old rumors and about the current state of BL adaptations

  4. I have said WYB's acting got better as the episodes increase, but ngl he is pretty bad during the entire sequence from the snowy night at Cloud Recesses until Burial Mound seige. he looks completely zonked out like he can barely keep his eyes open lol. it's super obvious that he filmed these scenes early on and out of order, and it's jarring to be reminded of his not-so-great-LWJ again. I guess it's fine since it's not like those scenes require a lot from LWJ, but and it's super weird bc it's sandwiched by him delivering some of the best LWJ scenes at the Koi Tower escape before and the Lotus Pier reveal after

So does the censorship not applied to animations? I would thought so since it’s also on TV. I saw a few eng subs clips of the animation in YouTube but I wouldn’t want to watch it if it’s not being eng subs. I used to watched animations but all those flashes for movements, swords fight, over the top animations are not working out for my eyes anymore. LOL. I don’t mind watching  a few short clips.

animations also face censorship but there is no animation that can have as big of an influence on the Chinese youth like dramas. SARFT always end up writing more censorship laws whenever a drama becomes too popular and they're always on drama productions like watch dogs

Scarlet Heart -> bans time travel on TV drama

Go Princess Go -> bans time travel on web dramas

    Addicted -> bans homosexuality

Story of Yanxi Palace - bans displaying excessive wealth and too much scheming lol

Yeah I think the drama made WWX into too much of a Gary Stu. And a bit too preachy at times. Novel WWX was a true anti-hero and more complex and unique. I honestly don’t think I would like drama WWX as much except for the actor being so charismatic. Is that another censorship thing? That the main character can’t be too grey and doing morally wrong stuff?

I know everyone thinks it’s a myth but there really is a loooong list of rules from SARFT for television dramas. Here are some “taboos” that pertains to CQL:

    - Sets a negative character as a main character, or exaggerates the positive sides of a reactionary, backwards, evil, or illegal [acting] person, society, or organization.

    - Promotes spirits, reincarnation, witchcraft and other feudal superstitious thinking

    - Blurs the value judgement between truth and falsehood, good and evil, beauty and ugliness, or confuses the basic boundaries between justice and injustice

    - Expresses or displays abnormal sexual relations or sexual behavior, such as incest, homosexuality, perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, and sexual violence.

Online dramas will have the same restrictions, and staff censors will supervise online content around the clock

Just finished watching the whole series and my biggest complaint is that they never mentioned why LZ had the wen sect scar on his chest. Other than that the series covered the major plots points but tends to miss the details that explains the how and why, and this makes the story less impactful and loses a lot of meaning.

I knew they wouldn’t be able to keep the explanation for that scar in. it really is just too gay lol and I was genuinely shocked they included it at all. I guess it’s just a visual easter egg for novel fans

Is any of the leads are dubbed over? It just come over my head when someone point out that Yang Yang in The King’s Avatar is dubbed over.

everyone in CQL is dubbed by voice actors. I'd say 9/10 period dramas are dubbed

altho I'm surprised Yang Yang was dubbed in TKA, he usually use his own for modern dramas

  9. whew the JGY and NMJ flashback was intense. I also like the scene of them bursting into JGY's room and LXC and LWJ's convo about trusting people; it's almost word for word from the novel

unfortunately the Koi Tower "escape" was real clunky and CQL is kinda giving up on the fight scenes at this point lmao. how useless are all those disciples and all the sect leaders just staying still waiting for LWJ and WWX make eyes at each other and say their lines. like y'all should let JC do something also than standing around frowning lol

  10. after the clumsiness of last week's Yi City, I feel better about the wrap up. XY's actor still overacts but his flashback when he died...like ok that got me right in the feels...

also random but it's kinda cute they casted a Jin Ling that looks so much like his 2 uncles and nothing like his parents lol. like the facial features between JL, JGY, and JC are uncanny

How much is the view count rn? Maybe the onslaught of episodes next week will gain more view

they’re at 3.3 billion. yeah I’m hoping by the time the non-vip schedule finishes it’ll get to 5. fingers crossed

Can someone explain how releasing it early will affect the views ? I'm not familiar with Chinese broadcasting systems so I'm curious. I mean it is a good way to earn money for the Investors right? And IMO the VIP member fee is cheap, around $1/month...

the worry is the spoilers and illegal leaks upload. I mean regular vip episodes already get leaks every week but all dramas suffer from that; this vip paying extra for even earlier release will take out another chunk of views from those who will watch the leaks cos they can’t wait and won’t go back to stream the actual eps 1-2 weeks later

  12. XY’s actor looks exactly like his part but he’s really veering off into overacting at times. XXC’s actor acting as XY pretending to XXC is kinda better lol. but props to both of them giving the best fight scenes so far in the drama. sometimes I get tired of LWJ being too flowy and fluttery lol

also I love the juniors, they’re almost exactly as I imagined. I would watch an extra centered around their shenanigans

    they can explain easily

unlike the book, LZ is responsible and infact wrote the invitation for JL's 1 month bday party.. which basically killed WY or got the ball rolling

Regret is epic.. it is horrible.. so yea.. they can explain it in "non-platonic" way :P

Why is Yi city memorable? it is story of XY.. and no romantic scenes.. the drunk scene after this arc.. i don't think we will get.. at max.. if we are really lucky, we may get the handcuff scene :P

well you are only here for the ~cute scenes~ and the ~gay~ then no I guess Yi city not memorable at all lol. I just happen to care about most characters from this novel, esp the Yi City trio. otherwise I’d be watching some saccharine romantic dramas instead of trying tk find something with actual plot

half cores are mentioned when the actual operation is going on.. atleast that's why i remember

there's no scene of the actual operation in the novel...the only mention of it ever is in chap 89. but I think I know what you're mistaking it for...when they where discussing the half/half probability of the operation

    Spoiler

Lan WangJi, “What were the chances?”

    Wen Ning, “About half.”

“Half.” Soundlessly, Lan WangJi took in a deep breath. He then shook his head, repeating, “… Half.”

    [...]

“But Young Master Wei kept on bothering her. He said that half was fine too. There was an equal chance of succeeding and failing. If his core was ruined, he’d manage to live on, but Sect Leader Jiang was a different case. He was too driven. He laid too much emphasis on such a subject. Cultivation was his life. If Sect Leader Jiang could only be an ordinary person, unable to go anywhere in life, his entire life would be over.”

And lastly, core is cultivated.. one is not born with it like a liver or heart.. that if the organ dies it is dead end..

the core in Chinese cultivation stories IS an organ in the lower abdomen that humans are born with called dantian (丹田). wikipedia translates it as " elixir field". through a process called called core formation ( 结丹), one can channel energy into it and transform it into a golden core  (金丹). when a person's golden core is melted or removed, the dantian is also gone, so it is in fact dead end for cultivation (and his health and lifespan is screwed in general)

    more info on cores here

also the Eng translation is correct

”Wen Ning, “Your core was never mended in the first place. It’d long since been completely melted by Wen ZhuLiu! The reason you thought it was mended was that my sister Wen Qing, the best medic of the QishanWen Sect, cut out Young Master Wei’s golden core and replaced yours with it!””

    no half cores here

I don’t know why WYB is criticized for acting. Hard to judge a guy when he’s supposed to be playing a “dead eye no expression” character, literally. He’s not supposed to be subtle or hard to read or hides his emotion type,  just plain no expression. In the book, every character always comment on his no expression face anytime he shows up. Constantly.

It works in a book cause all his feelings are told through his actions and we don’t get visuals anyway. I get that it’s tough to get the same feeling in a live-action, especially when everyone else is given super dramatic stuff to act out. But he’s got the hardest job any actor can get with that type of character.

I agree. I have seen a review that criticized him by saying he can be cold but not expressionless and cite Yehua from 3L3W and Shen Wei from Guardian as better examples. but I'm just like, LWJ is totally different from those 2 characters?? he IS expressionless and doesn't connect with anything unless he met WWX. as much as people harp on WYB's "dead fish look" in the first few eps, it actually helps to show LWJ's change from pre-WWX to post-WWX as he's starting to emote more later on (and actually even emoting more than novel LWJ is supposed too lol)

also imo a lot of the criticism was prejudice against the way he looks. like too young, too skinny, too short etc. there are so many fanart out there and also the donghua and he just doesn't look like that. but when I go back to the paragraphs that describes LWJ in the actual novel it's basically thin and lanky, with a cold beautiful face, and pale flawless skin...technically the only thing WYB doesn't match is the amber/golden eyes
