  1. To stay on topic and what @dramafan33 said before. I try not to psychoanalyse JH too much though no one can convince me he's not on the spectrum. I still remember that show when he went to Busan and they were watching some old HK movies - the way he was alone but still part of the group. The ability to find joy within himself / enjoy his own company. Yeah it's introverted behaviour but it isn't just that. I can also relate to his obsessive streak He gets philosophical about action, most of what he says is lost on me (could be the translation) but I can acknowledge his passion and drive to get the best performance out every role no matter how prosaic it is on paper. I think he is too much in his head, which can come across as being obtuse and insensitive. And being dense (I mean intense and preoccupied with heavy thoughts) can be problematic if isn't paired with his boundless enthusiasm and passion. And I think what helped his case is that he comes from a sporty side, and is used to training his body to achieve his goals and is bound by routine and self-discipline. The more I live the more I realise that people of that nature (tendency to overthink), which is a category I fall into, need to be able to transfer some of that mental energy into something physical - otherwise the energy has nowhere else to go and becomes rather toxic. I say this as someone who feels relatively stagnant and tends to gravitate towards less physical and social hobbies. These days I have come to regret not playing any sports when I was younger However, the main reason why I am drawn to him is that he's pretty transparent - I can't see anything cruel or spiteful in him. There is a childlike innocence and curiousity about him that I hope he never loses EDIT And I've never had a problem with the dynamic of the Dragon Bros, none of them bothered me. I appreciated how loyal they are and how they've embraced JH's idiosyncrasies. I understand that Korea is a tough society for neurodivergent individuals. I seem to recall someone said he left Busan (or Seoul) because he was bullied in school. Don't know how true that is. However, he is someone that people can have very polarising views about personality wise. So the fact that they've been friends with him for so long and stood by him after his scandal makes me appreciate them. Plus I don't mind how they rib at each other because I realise there is deep friendship that underpins it all and it is also part of that culture
  2. @partyon it's a shame about My Happy Ending but I had a hunch about it and dropped it after two episodes (it's also not streaming on Netflix UK so wasn't a hard decision to make). I could smell the melodrama (without emotional depth) and circular narrative a mile away It threw a lot at the audience in the first two episodes but I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters yet to care too deeply These guys on this thread know how I feel about overacting and, for me, JNR was a bit too much for my taste. She's grown tremendously as an actress but I would have preferred a performance that is a bit more subdued / moody with a lot of quieter, spacing out moments. For instance, I saw the film Yoko last night - and though the character frustrated me with her silence/ meekness, you could literally picture the dark clouds hanging over her head. However, I don't blame JNR too much, the plot is too thin that every dramatic moment comes across as overblown. The reason why she spiralled in the first two episodes was too thin even though there is a huge trauma and a lot of nasty stuff that unravel later on. A person like that who had been able to hide her mental state for years and gotten so high on the corporate ladder should have been played as more emotionally numb rather than being so brittle - thus pissing off her detractors to the point that they do more and more to torment her and she gets just as nasty and unstable. Maybe I expected too much. I just think it would have been a lot darker but less melodramatic I say this as someone who used to be into drama (acting) when I was younger (studied it but not at degree level) and currently thinking about joining an amateur theatre group
  3. It occurs to me that the similarities between this new show idea and his previous shows is deliberate...I think JH is trying to fix what went wrong with Family and to some extent The Killer I do appreciate that about him in that he evaluates his roles / shows and where there is room for improvement, he would work at it until he gets it right. Just like he did with Bangwon. I have this same dogged / obsessive streak. And once it's been satisfied in the way he's happy with, he will move on For this reason, I'm quite intrigued now about what he would bring to the table with this new project. Though I'm still very concerned about the story. Bangwon in MYTNA was epic, the story not so much. I'm craving something that delivers both content and performance. It's about time And I agree with both @azureblue7 and @Biology Lesson on CTH. To me, he has the best people's skills (and probably the most intelligent imo) among the group. He's super observant, which makes his humour so dry and biting (something I enjoy from him even though it might come across as mean towards his friends). I really appreciated him on the Mongolia show, especially how he adopted KH and probably was the one he felt most comfortable with
  4. @dramafan33 you're right, his outlook and general positivity (and excitement over his work) is really inspiring. Especially when you contrast it to someone like CTH who seems rather blaise and cynical. I hope more doors will be opened to JH so he can do what he enjoys until he's old and grey and ready to retire / slow down It's great that despite so many years in the industry, he's not worn out bt it all - I do think he needs to be mindful of his body which is also a reason why I'm not too interested in him doing more action. Wear and tear to the body can really show in old age I also think JH is probs the one who gave HKH a pep talk during the Mongolia trip - he sounded so down beaten over his career back then. And now he's doing the music he always wanted to do - heavy metal. Him and JH look really close these days and I suspect his positivity is rubbing off on his friend
  5. @dramafan33 you're right. Life's too short. They should travel as much as they can though I don't think they should be filmed for every trip. Just the bucket list and milestones ones which is why I mentioned 50 I'm glad he has his friends for company when he gets lonely like CTH mentioned calling him and HKH saying he was thinking of a sleeping over once because he was so sad about leaving him alone I did notice he did drank quite a bit but didn't see the others indulge as much. That said, HKH mentioned he's quite the lightweight so at least he has a natural threshold keeping him from drinking to a stupor. I've never touched alcohol so don't know much about drinking limits and what is / isn't too much
  6. @Biology Lesson oh that house / apartment was a mess I agree about the English lesson. He probably is being taught like someone doing a degree in English language and I can guarantee most native English speakers don't even have a sound understanding of grammar etc. He should spend his downtime if and when he has them with his family in the States and he can get immersed in it - and they should ask him to do the shopping, order at a restaurant etc so he gets comfortable with it quickly
  7. I may be in the minority but I found the latest Dragon Bro video boring - the whole 30mins time loop was quite apt because it became rather repetitive. I'm sure in their day to day lives, they have plenty to talk about but in the context of a show they are most likely to stay with safe topics for image purposes etc. For me, the novelty has worn off and I think another travel show would be too soon. Maybe they should wait a few more years perhaps to mark the milestone of turning 50... And yep JH is a too much talker. Sheesh. I can sympathise with the dude that sat with him on that flight when they were shooting Iris 2. His poor wife tho - her ears are getting a break at last 😅
  8. @Biology Lesson that's interesting to know. I suppose it's like when US / UK celebs do friendly games in basketball, golf, etc. usually to raise money for charity And you're right I remember that other guy commenting about sparring versus actual boxing, and JH is competitive by nature Lol about him becoming more trendy. I'm surprised it took this long. With two teenaged sons, I was expecting to see more of their influence on him sooner at least on the tech side
  9. God no! Please don't give him any ideas. I imagine it would be like Lee Hanae's current historical show where she is playing a widower slash vigilante fighting crime 😅 I haven't seen it but I think it is the show's concept Ah I see but it feels like only yesterday that he floated the idea unless he's had it ages and only mentioned it recently The timeline seems rather short and for that reason I'm worried about the screenplay / story quality. Even if they start filming in April, it seems too sudden to me. Except what you're saying is it will be released in April? That's really fast
  10. Does it mean April this year or next? And is it a film or TV show? Does it not have the same vibe as The Killer? i.e. a contract killer who is a house husband and now a former action actor turned house husband plus Family where he was a husband with a double life. He probably needs to get out of the action genre and husband mindset, which seems to be versions of himself 🤣
  11. Eep just read Grace's story that he might be making a professional boxing debut. I like sparring etc. But the risk of injury in boxing and other contact sports is too high for me to feel comfortable about this Why this? Why now? I'm sorry but got to ask, is he going through a midlife crisis or something? I think it might be related to this event. I may have been a tad dramatic in the beginning 😅 https://www.mk.co.kr/en/sports/10935681#:~:text=The undercard game will also,Seoul in December last year.
  12. @Biology Lesson I somewhat feel vindicated. This is what I've been saying for ages now about not liking his taste. Even though it probably made me come across as a hater. He's a very old fashion guy and dare I say sentimental (mostly corny). He's great with characters but his usual discernment does not extend to stories. This new concept for a show sounds so uninteresting to me and as you said feels like a rehash of Family, which sucked. Hence I wasn't really bowled over with the idea of him pitching new stories. I guess my opinion is forever tainted by The Killer, which I know most of you liked but I have a visceral dislike of. I'm really not interested in another pointless, hollow plot that tries to pass off as cool action. Whatever happened to that diver story he had the script for? I hope and pray someone offers him some thing else and hopefully it's not as bad as Family. In the meantime, I'll keep watching The Mentalist (I think JH would make a great Patrick Jane) and I'm going to start The Killer Paradox today. The concept sounds a little like Dexter and I generally enjoy crime shows. OT: Has anyone seen The Holdovers? It was fantastic - the dialogue and performances were pitched perfectly. It has elements of a story I'm currently working on about a family and the father is a cynical teacher. I hope to develop it and pitch it to Mark Shaw whose company distributed The Killer in North America. If you haven't guessed already, I'm writing it with JH in mind
  13. @Biology Lesson I wish I shared your certainty and optimism about JH having a plan. It's still a little hazy to me about what it is and how it will materialise. The album thingie would have made more sense when he had back to back action films - Swordsman, Paid in Blood, Killer. That said I think he mentioned getting inspired with a concept while working on the album. Maybe something is already in development. But who knows how long that will take. I also share your sentiments about a good script. Until a good script materialises I remain sceptical I'm not a patient person I suppose and it doesn't help that I'm seeing so many projects signed off and his name isn't on any of them. Plus not being so keen on his action stuff it probably means I have to wait even longer for him to do other genres if at all. Don't mind me because I realise we're all on the same boat with the waiting. I've got a strategy to distract myself but my mind tends to wander like it did today Re LSK, it is absolutely horrid what happened to him. Not sure how much of it will trigger a culture change. I suspect it won't. I can't imagine what his family must be going through right now, especially his young sons. Horrible
  14. Lol they did go with the affair plot I've hit pause on the drama for now because it hasn't hooked me yet plot wise and it's far too melodramatic for my taste. Still it's better than Family simply because stuff happens in the first few episodes, and there is no dreadful comedy Looks like the main SK production companies have announced their 2024 lineup. Every man and his dog has casting news except JH. Can't say I'm not sad about it. Maybe we'll get something in the 2nd half of the year? JNR has a new SBS show about divorce lawyers planned I think for the first half of the year...with one of the actors from Little Women (the female lead in Suspicious Partner which I was forced to watch because of my mum who loved the actor playing the male lead at the time). Anywho, happy new year everyone. See you around Edit: Finished Gyeongseong Creature and I loved it. They gave an open-ended ending so looks like there might be a season 2. I would be so happy if JH becomes involved - if only!
  15. Hahaha! To be fair it was pretty forgettable so I don't blame you at all Will be on the lookout for JNR's next starting this Saturday just to take notes on how much better it will be story wise though from the previews it seems overly dramatic for my taste. I suspect it will be something like The Glory (in terms of her past trauma) though I haven't seen that show. I will roll my eyes if they go for something as underwhelming and pedantic as her husband having an affair with her friend Yep Moving did have more depth than your standard superhero show - movies because I haven't watched that many superhero shows at least not the ones on Disneyplus
  16. @azureblue7 I liked Moving too but mostly for the action. I thought it had pretty realistic fight scenes for a show about people with superpowers. They were messy / bloody instead of the sleek and highly CGI stuff we get from HW. They fight like how I imagine ordinary, untrained people with superpowers would fight. The only fight scenes I didn't like were the ones with Jo Insung because I found them too sleek, zippy and precise As for the storyline, the first few episodes with the high schoolers dragged a bit. The world building - mostly backstory we got about the leads was decent - but I honestly didn't care enough for the characters even though it was a pretty sentimental show. I did appreciate that the baddies were not one-dimensional. That said, it didn't move me Altogether it was a decent watch and one I wouldn't have minded JH being part of. My fave actor on it was the old guy who was the director of the agency. I remember him from Vagabond and thought he was really good in this
  17. @dramafan33 I also didn't know of his recent struggles. I only started watching Payback yesterday and there's a movie of his on Netflix that's about to be removed so I started it. I've also seen him in Parasite and the prosecutor show he had with the lady from WoL. Can't say I stanned him but I defo liked the stuff I've seen from him. His voice was so unique - reminds me of Matthew MacFadyen's. The son in law from Succession in case you're wondering. Also, I didn't even know LSK by name. Was browsing Twitter and saw his name was trending and then found out. It really saddened me that he felt he had no other options. It took me back to when Jonghyun from Shinee did the same and it was also around this time of the year. Those last CCTV images of him just out / seeking something are haunting. I can only imagine the same loneliness / estrangement LSK may have felt in those final moments I do agree that suicide is an outlier for the most part but for some cultures it isn't. And we are more susceptible than not if the conditions are there. That's why I don't take depression lightly @Biology Lesson for sure there is a seedier part to the entertainment industry. There was this huge scandal some years back and culturally they still have work to do with things like bullying and misogyny. I wasn't talking about that but I see your point For better or worse, JH is still part of that industry and now that I'm branching out by watching more stuff, whenever I see a show or character I like, I can't help thinking if only JH was offered something like this. I don't particularly think he would mind being in demand etc but I also appreciate he is not prone to wallowing in self pity and is a proactive / go-getter type. I noticed he's following some motivational IG pages that post daily words of wisdom / inspiration. Whatever helps really. With his family being away and him being a workaholic without work (not that we know of!), I do think about these things sometimes...again not implying there's anything to worry about
  18. @Biology Lesson I'm in no way implying that JH was depressed or had suicidal thoughts but we can't say for certain how he must have felt deep down The biggest difference with LSK is they were in different life stages. JH had his military service to shield him a little from continued public scrutiny. He could disappear from the public gaze so to speak. Whereas LSK was still in the thick of what I imagine would have been a long process. Plus he's a father and JH wasn't at the time. When you're younger, you're more tenacious and its easier to imagine starting over. This in no way invalidates the fact that depression and suicides among young people is high. Simply put the stakes are higher in LSK's case And I think I have a different impression of the industry than you. Imo they are no more cliquey than HW or BW. At least they are a little better on nepotism but in general I understand that people will cast who they like or want to work with. I don't see it as playing a game JH going his own path might be a product of him not getting repeat offers from people he's worked with before. His acting might not be to everyone's taste for example. Or it could also be that he's not interested in the sort of content they're making these days. This is consistent with the fact that he's now pitching ideas. Agree that better to wait and see how his plan unfolds Personally, there are duds in every film industry but I've also seen some great SK shows. I can't fault how JH chooses roles but can't say I've been enamoured with some of the stories. Some people have a knack for picking good stories, have talent, and are also lucky in being favoured by certain producers/ directors. I don't wish to diminish their success by saying they are playing a game, because I don't think they are. Yes popularity and fanservice does play a part. But I'd like to think that some writers / directors / producers see themselves as artists / have a vision and will cast who they think would do justice to their stories Also can't argue that it was the weight of LSK's fame that led to his decision. The allegations he was facing are career damaging in that part of the world and its also a culture with high social guilt. Whether he was internationally renowned or not, the strain would have been the same. That's not to say another person in his shoes would have acted the same way. After all we react to stress differently
  19. Seeing the news about Lee Sun-Kyun makes me all the more grateful that JH had good friends to rally around him during his past issues... I know the two controversies are in no way comparable but the type of mental strain and public backlash is. And poor LSK's family - can't begin to think what they're going through right now. How very sad. May he rest in peace. I will continue watching Payback on Prime, which I only started yesterday Despite my self imposed exile, I have been spying on this thread daily lol. Watching a couple of shows and thinking how JH would have fitted them. My current fave is Gyeongseong Creature and I'm really enjoying Park Seo joon in this. I would have loved to see JH as one of the baddies - the one doing the experiments - although the current actors are also good. Also watching Death's Game - it's not grabbed me the same way but it was nice to see the stepbrother from MF doing a different, more action centric role. Again something I was thinking JH could have pulled off Finished watching Jirisan and it was a comfortable watch and good ensemble. I do like the genre - disaster / rescue (?)- though I wouldn't have added a crime thriller in the mix as a matter of preference. Made me curious about Ji Jihoon - will be looking out for something else of his to watch. Not Hyena though lol Fingers crossed for casting news soon. Can't even pretend I'm interested in house husband or the photocard thingie. Though I wish him all the best with it all Gaah I want a meaty, non-action role in 2024. Something with emotional weight. Slice of life for the win! Edit: LSK has the type of filmography that I wish JH had. I didn't think to compare them as actors although I would say he didn't grab my attention like JH, Lee Minki and Park Seo-joon. But his body of work, in terms of storylines, is impressive to me. Such a shame indeed
  20. That makes the two of us...the less I say the better. My action preference is Muay Thai / cage fighting. JH's style is more about agility and precision. I like something more messy and actually looks like someone is getting hit hard- the Family bus fight scene is the only fight scene of his I've truly enjoyed plus the fights in The Swordsman. They look less stylish and zippy compared to his usual stuff plus swords are cool Also, I'm guessing an action video is like a music video. Sounds interesting if you're an action fan I guess. Is this aimed at International fans? From what I've observed Korean fans are a picky / critical bunch (a little like me!). I can't see them being interested in something like this. Maybe filming it like some type of game is intentional and will catch the gaming crowd? From the fanmeet, I can understand him being scared because this is a new territory for him. But I'm also glad he's taking risks and I hope it pays off. The only concern I have is that he is surrounded by yes men who perhaps don't challenge his ideas much. He has his action crew and all but I was really hoping he could get to collaborate with a veteran action director like his co-judge on that stunt people show. Get a different perspective, try out different moves, etc. Seeing more of what's out there these days, especially shows like Bloodhounds, I personally feel he has to up his game. I know he watches a lot but he seems to gravitate towards the older action movies, which uber action fans enjoy but there are always newer audiences to cater to who perhaps have a different taste Even though he is labelled a Korean action star sadly there is a lot of content that he's not getting pulled into - not his fault mind you - it goes to show that the genre is pretty generic / crowded and he's not top of mind when the powers that be are creating content. And he should be Until a new project is announced, I'm at loss. I suppose I need to get used to the uncertainty for a short while until he gets into his stride. I'll be less active here, which should be good news because I tend to spoil the vibe sometimes I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a melo drama in the new year. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance to you all
  21. Could be in the minority @azureblue7 but that sounds good to me. I've always wondered what it would be like if he had free rein to execute his vision. I also see action director as a stepping stone into becoming a full-fledged director, which makes it even more exciting to me I really love that he is open to learning and challenging himself. Wish him all the best
  22. @dramafan33 I would have assumed the opposite. That he was doing quite well with money and that's why he could afford to send his family abroad and maintain his residency in Korea as well. Isn't it more expensive keeping two households? I believe on top of the Gangnam property, he is also an investor with The One Boxing and probs have other production related investments. Probably his company that is organising the fan events in Japan. Ofc every little helps money wise and that could be the reason why he's doing the show. The bigger reason is probably what he said in Mongolia - that an actor has to diversify and do both acting and variety. So maybe that's what he plans to do in the future. In less busy periods, alternate between acting and variety I also agree with @Biology Lesson that actors do have to maintain some mystery about them. Luckily S Korea isn't like HW and people don't get hounded by paparazzi in the same way. Or maybe they do? Also agree that there are other shows that are probably more interesting and suitable - though I'm not that familiar with S Korean variety shows. It's a shame that the stunt people show didn't take off. It would have been good if it had and he'd been a regular on it. I wouldn't mind seeing him in some type of talent / scouting show where he has to be a judge and mentor @dramafan33 I did say Because This is My First Life is a slow burn romance. I was invested in the lead couple from the beginning (perhaps because I saw SeeHee as another Sheldon) so I didn't mind the pacing but I can appreciate it won't be to everyone's taste. The office worker and boss romance was my second favourite. On the other hand, I felt the lady in that long term relationship had to make all the compromises and they gave her an alternative love interest who sucked and was too clingy, which is why it was my least favourite relationship
