  1.

This is based on a webnovel 'The Mystery of Zhang Gong' by Da Feng Gua Guo.

@SC2019 - Can you add the links to the novel translation (https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-mystery-of-zhang-gong/) and the site the novel was published on (http://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=1180294) ?

I thought it would be banned as China just passed the policy to ban boy love dramas. The Immortality may never see the light. What a shame!

This is actually not a BL drama. The novel is 'no CP' - doesn't contain any pairing. But that's going from the jjwxc description - I haven't read the novel.

Ye, that's totally fine when such relationships are shown in BG pairing, no one is complaining on such dramas, ha?

Overall, it makes me sad so much work of everyone involved is just thrown in garbage... no respect at all...

I find it hilarious, to be honest. THIS is their problem? The novel has multiple scenes of rape (done by the MC), sex acts, violence (deep-fried empress, steamed consort - done by the MC), prostitute characters (the MC used to visit male prostitutes) etc. and THIS is what they are most concerned about? They are either absolutely braindead or trolls. :spitswater:

Is “Winner is King” really the official title? It sounds like a direct translation of 胜者为王。 I guess they feel Sha Po Lang has limited attraction for English-educated viewers. In any case, the Chinese name is unlikely to be the same. I saw word that the Chinese title has been changed to 烽火流金.

I very much doubt any BL drama will be screened in the near future. I’m a little concerned whether BL authors will be affected by the direction of the new policies. For instance, Priest has been requested to make changes to works that have been adapted to dramas, both the ones already broadcast and those waiting to be broadcast.

If anything using the Sha Po Lang title is a wise move, because there already is a popular Hong Kong film of that name - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPL:_Sha_Po_Lang

What better way to market to an unsuspecting audience? :coolshades:

Chinese censors are as morally bankrupt as drug dealers - what else is new?

:huh:that came unexpected... should we try and read the novels as fast as we can?...

Yes. The English translation is complete. If you want to read in Chinese, there are physical editions in both traditional (published in Taiwan) and simplified (published in PRC) Chinese.

WOW. So it's really serious and happening...well, as I always say, we can just wait and see how things would work out...or not...

BTW, normally I do not read novels that already announced drama adaptations, just bcs I like to watch plot development without being aware of what's going to happen:).

I predict that the plot will be butchered to a disgusting degree, so you may as well read the novel. There are too many elements that either displease censors or are too costly to pull off (like mechanical designs and props, hiring foreign actors etc.).

I certainly hope so. China have been getting incredibly strict with their regulations. Lots of potentially excellent dramas being shelved. I do hope they find abroad market, similar to the movies The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity. It was showed on Netflix while banned in China. Alas, it is hard for it to happen though, not a lot of overseas platforms are willing to offend the Chinese government and the red tape they may have to go through to secure the license is unimaginable. In the case of the mentioned above movie, Netflix already secured its license before the Chinese department decided to pull it out of domestic market, hence it could still be available on foreign market.

Huh? Viki has no problem streaming Word of Honour and Addicted - both removed from Mainland streaming services.

To be fair, getting a streaming license for a drama from China should be much easier and cheaper than from Japan.

  5. Hey, OP! @tothestars

Can you link to the novel this drama is based on - http://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=3192481 ? It's called 二哈和他的白猫师尊 (Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun). It's also translated into English: https://2hatl.carrd.co

It's also getting adapted into a manhua! :

Anyway, the novel is quite graphic, so I'm wondering what's been going on in the showrunner's head... :rubchin:

Under the current political climate , this drama will probably be thrown into cold storage , won't be aired in these few years.

    Please don't say that... :wut:

Maybe they can sell it exclusively abroad and give up on the domestic release for the time being...

  6. Winner is King? It's the stupidest English name they could come up with. :surprisedwut:

Why couldn't they keep the original name?

Anyway, this is based on a novel titled Sha Po Lang (杀破狼). To be frank, I can't see this turning out well as the novel has steampunk technology, which will be difficult to include in the drama if their budget is limited. But if they remove those elements, they'll need to rewrite the plot heavily and it just can't turn out well. I'm sure they are going with the second route though... for reasons... In the novel, the romance actually plays a very important role in plot progression, and turning it into 'bromance' will just not work in the setting (why would an adopted son be obsessed to such an extent with the father who adopted him?) - I'm rather dreading the final result... It's not like the writers can make it into 'becoming inseparable best friends' because the two leads are already family...

@sugarplum892 Can you link to the novel, OP? It's published here: http://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=2322969
