I think RN did not ask/pay for exclusive rights to some of the music so they can be licensed to other drama by the composer.

Yea, I guess it’s legal, but I’m still not OK with it :)When I hear it in other dramas, I feel like it’s not fitting at all, because no drama has ever been as heavy as RN to me. Hearing it takes me right out of whatever I’m watching and into a beautifully dramatic (and better) RN scene, so the current drama isn’t doing itself any favors with that. But I suppose it’s only a problem for people who are obsessed with RN, so like 5 people? :)

CP wrote that Lu Zhongcheng and his son could be in danger and that it was best for Minister Zhang to get there swiftly to protect them, investigate and apprehend the culprits. She later explained that it was not because she wanted to harm Lu Zhongcheng but that as they were out of danger by the time she arrived, she decided there was no need to hand over the letter. She wanted to keep it because she once had a crush on CP.

@bluehibiscus Thx so much! I had always assumed her telling him she wanted it as a keepsake, was just a lie to cover her actual intentions. But now that I know what the letter says, I really can’t think of what else she could have had in mind :)

  3. Hey All, randomly watching episodes, like I do, and I don’t think I ever knew what the letter CP gives to WX, to give to Minister Zhang in Ep24, says? And then why she doesn’t ever give it to him? It’s not translated, so if anyone could advise, I’d appreciate it :)

I just finished watching A Dream of Splendour. I wonder which bit it was...

I noticed, a while back, that in The Legend of Xiao Chuo, in ep 1, the first section of the music was absolutely identical to RN... (we may have discussed this I think?) Such a shame, especially since there are so, so many talented artists of every kind in China.

A dream of splendor is my next drama,  I’ll definitely be watching for it! :)

  4. This is amazing news!! Thanks @bluehibiscus! A legitimate reason to watch the series all over again! I haven’t stopped watching it since I started, but now I have a reason :) Definitely looking forward to watching more OTP scenes, but to be honest, I’m really looking forward to Xu Changping and 5th Prince’s character developments. I really liked both of them and was disappointed that they were cut short. (Now if they would only fix Rise of the Phoenixes the same way...) Yay!!!

  5. Thanks again, @bluehibiscus !! You have successfully walked me off the ledge with this conspiracy plot :) Though I am disappointed to learn that CP failed at every step (I had thought he got a little stab at Li, at least) I so appreciate your taking the time to rewatch these episodes, even more so because I know they aren’t my favorites either. I think I’m good with the rest of the conspiracy plots (thanks to previous posted on this forum), so I’m sure any future questions will be about scenes we both would enjoy rewatching :) Take care!

  6. Woohoo! Thanks so much, @bluehibiscus !! I totally get your point about there being loopholes under intense scrutiny, but since I still have questions, even after your detailed explanation, I’m thinking it’s more on me than the talented author and professional writers :) Using your post as a guideline, I skimmed through these episodes, and here is what I’ve pieced together:

Zhao gets caught by Li (on purpose). Li then makes 2 cheat sheets, and gives the originals back to Zhao, along with his special paper and seals. Li tells Zhao to rewrite/seal the questions and take the originals home. Since Xu was working with Li from the get go, Li was already aware of CP’s countermeasure to forge a letter from Qi to Xu, with the exact room numbers listed. That set himself up nicely to wait for the evidence to show that the rooms had been renumbered, and he could then pin things on CP, with the testimony of Xu and the bribed students, which was his overall goal. But I missed in Ep6 that Zhao didn’t take the originals home, he gave them to CP. Zhao stayed loyal to CP (or maybe he did whatever Xu told him to do). So that’s how CP got the original questions, to make his cheat sheet for Xu and to recreate the questions/seal with Li’s stationary and seals. Li didn’t expect Zhao to give the originals to CP or for CP to get the originals into Qi’s place. So, he’s uncomfortable only for a moment, and he takes the blame to protect Qi, knowing that the renumbering evidence will eventually exonerate him.

    Think I got it now?

Actually, CP didn’t need to prepare any answer for the exam question. If Li had been unaware of CP’s plan, after catching Zhao, he would have prepared 3 sets of answers and placed them in the rooms that Xu, Lu Wen Pu and Gu Feng En sat in so they would get caught red-handed. Zhao and Xu would then accuse Teacher Li of leaking the questions to help his students. There should be two sets of model answers found in Xu’s room as CP promised Xu a set of answer as a reward for his part in the ploy. The fact that only one set was found in Xu’s room showed that Xu had already betrayed CP and let Li in on the conspiracy. On the time taken to answer the exam question, CP was extraordinarily intelligent so he could achieve in one night what would take others 3 days! :P

Ok, I think I finally get this now. You’re saying that if Li wasn’t aware of CP’s plan, he would have made cheat sheets for Xu, LWP and GFE, and therefore Xu’s room would have 1 from CP and 1 from Li. But since there was only 1 in Xu’s room, it meant that Li didn’t prepare one for him, which meant that Li was aware that he already had 1. Man, this seems like quite a stretch on the writer’s part. Li attacking GFE makes sense, since he was close to CP, but I had thought CP chose Xu to help him with this plan because they weren't outwardly connected at all. So why would CP assume that Li would attack Xu, along with GFE and LWP, and therefore Xu should have 2 cheat sheets? But maybe it’s just me...

About CP being intelligent, you right, you right. But I guess that’s why Li wins this round, he was able to write 2 sets! of answers in the same amount of time :)

Lu recopied the exam questions and destroyed the ones forged by CP, effectively taking on the blame to protect CP. That was why the Emperor commented to Dian Shuai, “Right, they (the handwriting) look virtually identical.” (because they were both written by Lu).

I totally missed this plot point. I had thought Lu ‘said’ he rewrote it, only as part of his ‘confession’. I didn’t realize he actually did it. Thanks for this!

Ep5, towards the end, where Li writes the characters “supervision” and “vigilance” (according to Prime), can you tell me what this scene is about and what the symbol he draws in front of each character means?

BTW, I’m with you on enjoying the overall love story (and production value) more than the conspiracy plots, but when I really like something, I want to understand it completely. Even though it makes my brain fry, I feel like I have to get it straight to fully enjoy it. Sucks for me and now for everyone on his board :) So thanks again for your help!!

  7. Thanks so much @bluehibiscus !! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of these thorough translations. With the Amazon translations, the show is incomprehensible for a non mandarin speaker, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the show as much as I do now without your and other posters’ help. Plus, reading the lines of the show is almost like watching it all over again, but with a deeper understanding, and I almost enjoy this process more than understanding it completely the first time, like a puzzle :) Anyway, thanks so much! (and TIA for the exams questions I have... I really tried, but alas... )

    1. This point is supposedly addressed in a deleted scene after CP jumps into the pond to save Wenxi. The Emperor rebukes CP for getting himself drenched as it is not befitting his position and CP lashes back, saying he cannot be as callous or clear-minded as him after his wife’s death. The Emperor made Wu De Hou retire from the army 3 years ago right after the Empress’ death by claiming the opening of the gates let in an assassin. That is why when CP kneels in the snow in Episode 1, Gu is in the capital and Zhao Guifei says he’s retired at home.

    2. Summary of exam question leak debacle:

    Gu Feng En - Room# Tian 48

    Lu Wenpu - Room # Tian 60

    Xu Changping - Room # Xuan 2

CP was worried that Li Baizhou would target Lu Shiyu, Gu Feng En and Lu Wenpu (the son of his teacher’s student Lu Ying, who had been recommended by Teacher Lu to lead the Censorate which oversaw the conduct of the imperial officials) so he bribed Zhao Li, the keeper of the key to the cabinet where the sealed exam question was kept and his nephew, Xu Chang Ping. If Li Baizhou took action, he promised Xu a post in his residence. If Li Baizhou did not act, he would give Xu a copy of the exam question.

CP visited Teacher Lu and diverted him away from the scene. Meanwhile, Zhao Li stole the exam questions and purposely got caught by Li Baizhou in the process.

The 3 candidates in Room # Tian 49, 61 and Xuan 3 were Li Baizhou’s men. They would later accuse CP of bribing them and arranging for a copy of the exam question to be placed in the rooms beforehand but the change in the room numbers caused Gu Feng En, Lu Wenpu and Xu to be implicated. The real target of Li Baizhou was CP, not Teacher Lu, Gu Feng En or Lu Wenpu. He also got one of the guards to purposely let in a candidate who was trying to cheat by bringing in unpermitted materials. This would be the trigger for ordering a search of all the candidates and their rooms later on.

CP then forged Qi’s handwriting to write a letter instructing Xu to make copies of the exam question and place them in Room# Tian 48 and Tian 60. These forged letters were placed in Xu’s home. He also got Wenxi to take the original exam question to Qi’s residence, pretending it was at Qi’s orders for safekeeping by Qi’s wife. To make sure Qi was away then, he had an attendant send information to Qi’s wife that CP was sending his men to retrieve the original exam question from Zhao Li’s home so Qi would try to intercept him.

What CP did not know when he wrote the letter was that Room# Tian 40 had a broken roof and the rooms were renumbered by Li Baizhou i.e. Candidate Tian 40 would sit in the room that was originally Tian 41 and so forth. This affected rooms from Tian 40 to Xuan 10. Hence, the copies of the exam question from Li should be in Room # Tian 49, 61 and Xuan 3. Since Xu had a copy of the exam question by CP, there should be 2 copies of the exam question in Xuan #3 but only one copy was found. This meant that Xu and Li Baizhou were working together. Xu later said CP was the one who told him to accuse Qi of being the instigator. To the world, the material evidence and witnesses point to CP trying to frame his brother, Qi, which was what Li Baizhou intended as it could be grounds for him to be deposed.

Not sure if anyone is still willing to dive into this, I know it’s not as fun as rewatching OTP scenes, but I’m still stuck on the exams plot. I rewatched episodes 5, 6, & 7 today, and used the above as a guideline, but I’m still so confused. Here’s why:

So, Zhao went into this planning to be loyal to CP, but Xu was working with Li from the get-go? After all is said and done, Xu meets with Li and An Ping, and Li says the re-numbering of the rooms was Xu’s idea. So did Li have a nefarious plan before CP even planned anything? Or did CP create this whole ‘counter measure’ for nothing?

And what exactly was CP’s plan? He bribed Xu to be on his team, but what exactly did he want him to do?

Zhao seems to run into Li immediately after stealing the documents. Does Li take the documents from him? If so, when does CP get them, to make sealed copies to back in the locked box? And if he doesn’t take them, why did Zhao purposely want to run into him?

The 3 sealed documents inside the locked box. Are they 3 separate sets of questions, or is it 3 of the same, and if so, why? Just curious :)

What documents did the guards find when they searched the rooms for evidence of cheating? Was it the questions, or the answers? Did someone (CP or Li) actually write out the answers to the questions and still somehow get them back into the rooms before the start of the test the following morning? If so, seems crazy that a test that takes 9 days could be completed by one person, three times over, in one night. But if it was just the questions, I don’t understand how the questions being in the test room helps anyone, when they’re about to receive the test anyway :)

I don’t understand who exactly put the ‘questions/answers?’ into Gu and Lu’s rooms. Was it Xu (and I’m assuming that wasn’t part of CP’s plan)? Or was it Li, and if so, I just don’t understand how he can be involved with any documentation when we know that the crown prince at least redid the test questions. So it’s not like CP wrote anything out and somehow gave it back to Li, right?

Why does CP beat Xu? At this point does he already know that Xu has gone to the dark side? Or does he not know that yet and it’s all for show? Like, did Xu agree to this in advance? :)

Finally, I don’t understand this part, “Since Xu had a copy of the exam question by CP, there should be 2 copies of the exam question in Xuan #3 but only one copy was found. This meant that Xu and Li Baizhou were working together.” Shouldn’t there be 3 copies all together, and if it wasn’t CP’s intention to place them anywhere, why did he give more than 1 copy to Xu?

    Apologies, and thank you :)

ok @Fangsi, went back on youtube, and the translation is the same...on the line  " I thought only my opponents will let you say so", I take it to mean that he is extremely suspicious of her (while of course being attracted to her and just about falling in love with her) because he has enemies on all sides. He doesn't know if this 'I've loved you' is genuine, or something his enemies have told her to say, so she can stay and spy on him. So it would be his opponents that would have urged her to say such extreme words (watch how the other maids are all extremely uncomfortable at this, and promptly leave them alone) so he would let her stay. He's trying to understand if she really means it.

The other line you mention is a bit more tricky. The translation is again the same, CP says "except those" - "chu' na xie"- na xie is those, chu' is except, or also besides, in addition... the second line is "ni zi ji ne?, which does mean "about you?"/ "and yourself?". Now, I'm not sure what 'except those' refers to (except those who love me? except those who want to harm me?). This line follows the 'it's quite tough, how can I accept or decline', so maybe it means 'it's hard to decide except those ...feelings CP has about her? Not sure...

The 'what about yourself' I think is another reference to CP trying to work out if what she says is true, or just another trick to get close to him so she can report what she learns to his enemies.

Maybe others who may still read this thread can shine a better light on it....

Thanks so much, @PPB !! I was willing to wait, but you still responded in less than 24hrs! It’s much appreciated and so nice to know people are still willing to talk about this show, even though it’s old news :)

Even though it seems there’s still room for interpretation, it’s so nice just to get confirmation that the Prime translation is right, because I didn’t trust it at all, after reading everyone’s dialogue translations on this thread. I agree with what you wrote. The ‘opponents’ line is just his disbelief that it could be true; only one of his enemies could get a girl to say such a brazen thing. To me, it’s just an odd way to say it and his acting through this line just didn’t seem to match what he was saying, so I thought for sure I was missing something. And then even though he has more lines in between, now knowing that the Prime translation is correct, I think the ‘except those’ line is referring to his ‘opponents’ and saying something along the lines of ‘Nevermind your boss telling you to say that, tell me how you really feel’, because then he physically tests her.

Love this story (would also love to read the book). The quality of the production and main leads’ acting was top notch, but due to the shotty translations, I didn’t get really hooked into the story until

    Spoiler

CP’s wedding day. Because I kept thinking there could only be OTP, so how is this wedding going to get foiled? Then when they get married, I was like, ok, but he won’t consummate it. And then yup, but she’ll be a total RickRoll'D and he’ll hate her. But nope, she’s amazing and he loves her dearly. And Wenxi is watching it all, in person, real time?!?! So, I was just like, how exactly will our OTP ever get over this, and I couldn’t wait to see it unfold from there. Many sleepless nights :)

Just started watching c-dramas about a year and a half ago, and for the most part, it’s a love/hate relationship, because so many of them have great moments, but fall short on the total package. This is now my #2 fav, but Rise of the Phoenixes still beats this one for me. I loved all the characters In that story so much more, even the Emperor, whereas the only really loveable characters in this story are the main leads. I guess I have a type, cuz I think the production quality and script problems these 2 shows have are strikingly similar. Next show is going to be Nirvana in Fire, but still waiting on some DVDs to come in from some place in Israel, cuz I am NOT watching it with English dubz on Viki! :)

Thx again for your help. I’ll probably be back, though :)

  10. Hey All,

Just finished this show and immediately read every post in this chain. Loved reading all the comments and info. I was curious if anyone knows a source for watching this show that actually has good English subtitles? The subtitles on Amazon Prime were awful. Sometimes, when the characters were reciting poems, they actually just wrote “[poem]” as the translation! Wouldn’t mind rewatching this someday(soon) but only with better subtitles.

And I didn’t see this questioned anywhere (sorry if I missed it), but would anyone be able to tell me what the CP’s line of “I though only my opponent would let you say so” (Prime translation...) means, after Wenxi tells him that she used to love him in Ep25?

Then a few seconds later, when he first puts his hand around her neck, CP’s translation is “Except those... How about you?” And I don’t get that either.

Anyone willing to re-watch that scene and help me out? It’s a nice scene to re-watch anyway ;) TIA!

Ep2: in that morning, 1 guard of Royal Guard was murder. When Gu Yan examine the body,  he recognized a halberd ( from Bloody Pagoda), he seems worry and the flash back time to when The Royal Prince captured Gu Yan and brought him to the King with a testify about the ninth prince of Da Cheng Empire (who is already dead with Gu Heng). Gu Yen is the prime leader of Bloody Pagoda, then when leader died, prime leader automatically being the leader. That's the reason the King ask him what should he do with the leader(means Gu Yen); and Gu Yen beg for mercy for him, his wife, children and the remnants. The King agreed and used him --- then he became the betrayer. (that's why if Bloody Pagoda hate him and send that message became reasonable)

    2. Ning Sheng is the one killed Royal Guard, but Xin Ziyan is not innocent. He is the one made the halberd and by someway let Ning Sheng know and then use it for his motivation. XY just tell NY that he made it and let the greedy one makes his way.

.... for the rest, I'll discuss with you later. i got to go now

Thank you so much! You’ve really made my day, and now I’m one step closer to finally understanding this drama properly :)

I never considered that GY would be promoted once his brother died and therefore he would be the ‘leader’ the emperor referred to.

Oh man, when did the story reveal this elaborate plot about XZ indirectly giving the halberd to NS to use nefariously? I’m still missing so much! :)

Hey All - Sorry to have ghosted, I took some time to rewatch some episodes, so I could ask some questions here. Thanks to Lanjung, Skibbies and StoryoftheStone for getting back to me! @storyofthestone, thanks especially for that link you provided; I’ve never seen those posts before and I had a great time reading through that :) But still, I have so many questions...

I’m not sure the best way to do this, but I watched through episode 22, and wrote down all my questions. Since I have a few starting on Ep2, I think I’ll just start there and see how it goes, but I don’t have questions for every episode and for some, it’s only one, so if you don’t give up on me, I’ll probably make posts with several episodes grouped together. I’m already embarrassed that I have so many...

Anyway, here it goes. So, Ep2, around 12min (Netflix version), I’m confused on the timeline of things after this flashback. The guards are carrying out 2 bodies, one big, and one small, and I’m assuming it’s Gu Heng and the supposed remnant of DaCheng. And Ning Chuan (NC) says he’s captured a member of Bloody Pagoda (BP), Gu Yan (GY), who can confirm their identities. But then the Emperor asks GY what should be done with the leader of BP and the remnant of Dacheng, like they’re still alive? And GY says the Emperor should show them mercy. So, is the Emperor talking about giving them a respectful burial or something, or am I not understanding this convo?

After watching through to Episode 22, I still cannot figure out if it was Xin Ziyan (XZ) or Ning Sheng (NS) that killed the royal guard, pretending it was BP. In the convo Ning Yi (NY) has with XZ, XZ makes it sound like he planned it,  but later in Ep9, it seems that NS admits to it?

At 14:25min, XZ says to NY, “I went through great lengths to resurrect BP. Do you know why?” And NY says, “Whatever they do, they do it for the title of the crown prince. Now that they have taken action, why don’t we give them a hand?” I don’t get what they’re talking about here and who exactly the ‘they’ is referring to?

17:23min, So did NS start the rumor about the remnant being seen in his kingdom? Peng Pei (PP) says to NS, “you can ask his majesty to go to the fief to settle this matter” and NS basically responds with ‘let’s stay under the radar’. Did he start that rumor just so that he could be ordered to go back home (in the beginning, it’s mentioned somewhere that the princes were kinda forced to live in the capital, instead of their own kingdoms) or did he have a bigger plan with that rumor?

29:11min, I’m not sure I completely understand NY and Ning Chengs convo starting here, if someone could break it down for me, I’d appreciate it. But, some specific questions: NY references that NS gave them a big gift, was that the rumor or the killing of the royal guard (both?)? Then NY tells Ning Cheng that he wants to keep NS from leaving the capital, using the money that NS gave to Ning Cheng, but what was the plan? How was that money ever used to keep NS from leaving?

33:33min, just a comment, Feng Zhiwei (FZ) tells Zhuyin (ZY) her real name when they first meet, but when NY assumes that FZ must be Yuluo, ZY doesn’t say anything. Pretty mean :)

Thanks for listening (I feel like Ning Yan...)

Just reposting to see if anyone might be interested in helping me. If not, I’ll take the hint :) TIA!

  14. Hi All - I’m new to C-dramas, but after watching ROTP, I’m hooked. I’ve never heard of Soompi before, I found this forum just looking for people talking about the show ( so pls forgive me if I do anything stupid). Since finishing ROTP for the first time, I’ve read all the posts here, but never created an account to be part of the discussion because I really thought this obsession would go away, but here I am, almost a year later...

There are so many things that I love about this drama (the characters, the love-story,  the cinematography, the clothes, (most of) the acting), but I think the reason I keep watching it every time I have a free moment is because of its flaws. It kills me that the script just fell apart exponentially towards the end, so I find myself trying to figure out what they (script-writers, directors, etc...) were possibly thinking to present the story as we see it.

But while I know that some dialogue/scenes/edits/choices were just bad on them, I also always wonder if maybe I’m just missing something. I don’t speak Mandarin and I’m also not that bright, so it seems very possible that some things that drive me crazy could possibly just be lost in translation. Or that some questions I have do actually have an answer.

I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s insight on this forum, but I like NEED more detail so I can stop watching this show all the time. I was wondering if anyone knows a place where people are breaking down the discussion by episode (and all 70)? I’ve only been able to find stuff about the general plot or the awesome recaps by QuippeQuest. And if it doesn’t exist yet, would this be a good forum for it? I mean, I’m watching the show anyway, so I might as well make it productive :) Thx in advance!
