Direct comparison between tvb and mainland. Sad that tvb took away one part that minmin smile playfully and cunningly

Nice comparison! Yes, Zhao Min’s smile is really enchanting. Too bad it’s cut. This makes me confident that the dvd release wouldn’t have these random cuts. Now we just gotta hope for actual added scenes and dialogues.

I think Wuji sounds great in both versions, but I prefer Zhao Min’s mandarin version because it sounds smoother. She extends some syllables because she’s sort of flirting or patronizing him, which makes her sound sexier.

In Cantonese her words simply end where they’re supposed to end, so it sounds flat. No feeling. Does that make sense?

  2. Here’s another ADD that I didn’t notice when I watched it. On Weibo, someone was kind enough to compare:

    https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4372473858016990

Thinking back, I was very confused about that whole exchange between BH and 6th hero about her clothes in Mainland version but I chalked it up to not understanding what they were saying. Turns out, they cut away a whole minute of BH giving away her clothes to the victims.

This scene isn't in the Mainland version. So, this is an ADD scene. Also a slow motion when Wuji return to the Green Lu Liu.

Oh! Then I have to tell you something. I’m watching it a second time in Vietnamese on Fim Plus so my memory of Mainland is off, but my memory of Viet version is good. I remember that kick, that’s why I replied so quickly without properly confirming. That means the Vietnamese version has that extra kick or slow-mo that you’re talking about.

    Look here:

I’m sorry I have not been paying attention to any added shots. The flow of the series is still the same as when I watched it in Chinese so I automatically assumed it’s the same as original release. I just searched for that ep in Chinese on Youtube and it’s such a teeny tiny cut that it’s hardly noticeable. But can’t believe the cut the tiniest thing, when it barely saves them a second. That’s what—a milisecond?

Also, Fim Plus has released 40 episodes already, which has just ended at Wudan where YL shows up and WJ says he wants to take her with them to Ming Cult headquarters. It looks like it’s gearing for the same final 50 eps so no luck there.

The first video... isn’t the song from one of Luo Zhi Xiang’s (Show Lo’s) older albums? It sounds vaguely familiar!

The 3rd mv is also one of my favourites.

YES YES! It was this exact scene that I watched today when I thought that he was the cutest kid! Look at his giant doe-eyes! He’s quite adorable.

Thank you for the gif! (I couldn’t be bothered to make any myself but I’d love to save them onto my computer.)

I like it when YX said he knew WJ wouldn’t use ZM for their plan (WJ didn’t even have Anto say it out, his face said it all). I think WJ was pretty surprised and conflicted when they suggested to use ZM as their alliance. But then when it became clear that they just want to use her and get rid of her, I want to slap all of them. Not to mention they forcing WJ to almost doing it without considering his feeling at all. I feel like YX is the only who actually cares about WJ’s feeling.

YX is like a father figure to WJ. From the beginning he always has a proud face every time Wuji does something heroic. And he has the best reactions to all romance related events!  I like how the camera man always pans to his face when it comes to Wuji’s love triangles!

I also want to add, watching Joseph dressed as a beggar is so cute. He’s so doe-eyed and innocent looking because of his large eyes.

BTW, just read that due to the popularity of the latest remake of "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre", China is going to remake “The Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain” <雪山飛狐> and there are rumors on casting Lin Yushen (林雨申) as Hu Fei’s father.

    Full article here - https://www.jaynestars.com/news/china-to-remake-the-flying-fox-of-snowy-mountain/

If this is true, I’d be very happy. I’ve been waiting for a decent remake of Flying Fox. I liked TVB’s 1999 version with Sunny Chan, even if it strayed very far from source material. It also starred like half the cast of HSDS 2000.

Watched tvb version for the first time last night

Skipped to the last part to wait for minmin

I understand Cantonese very well and it's my favourite dialect but omg the voice over totally put me off from continuing to watch. They all sound v stagnant. Wuji sound abit cartoon?

Is the mandarin technically dubbed too because it's not their original voices? I know sometimes the actors have different accents depending on where they live, Taiwan vs China etc.

@kimmortal and to other people that have read the book, can all you explain why WJ still want to marry ZR once he knows about the oath ZR make to MJST not to marry WJ or bad things will happen?

Every time I watch that scene in the 2019 version WJ is like so flippant about it, like mate, your kids are pretty much cursed! Is in the book it got explained better? I already forgot what happened in the 1986 version.

So yeah, please help me understand people!!! :persevere:

He says it doesn’t count because MJST died while still under the misunderstanding that Ming Cult are evil. If she were still alive she would retract her statements and allow ZR to be with WJ. Book!Wuji is very naive and always tries to see the good side to everyone, to give people the benefit of the doubt, and to believe that good will prevail.

  10. I finally finished the 2nd edition novel HSDS.

    Here are my thoughts:

    Spoiler

As I was still reading, I kept picturing Joseph and Yukee in their respective roles, but strangely enough, starting from Shaolin Heroes Meet up to the end, I now picture them as completely separate fictional characters.

Book versions of all these people are so drastically different that, by the end, I AM actually very satisfied with how everything turned out. I even like that Wuji shows so much affection by kissing all the ladies or caressing their shoulders/arms.

Actually, I’m a little disappointed that 2019 series becomes so friggin SAD once WJ and MM get together. In the book, once we get to Shaolin so much happens but the series doesn’t show it. In the book, the Yellow Dress Maiden beats and humiliates ZR. ZR’s crimes is exposed to all the heroes once WJ finds the Dragon Sabre and Heaven Sword, it turns out Xie Xun heard everything that happened on Snake island but pretended to play along so as to not arouse ZR’s suspicions since he was still poisoned, Xie Xun drew pictures on the walls of the dungeon where he was imprisoned as his testimony depicting the events of Snake Island, Zhao Min steals the 9 Yin Manual and Book of Wumu from ZR, they reforge sabre but leave sword broken. Finally, the love story. ZR’s crimes are mostly all forgiven because YL is alive and ZR is shown to regret her actions and trying to atone. Jinyong writes a happy ending of sorts because he has ZR help to make YL reveal herself, apologizing to YL, forces WJ to confront and admit his true feelings (thereby playing matchmaker to WJ and MM) and the ladies are even shown to have forgiven each other and become friendly. People don’t seem to like the ending where ZR shows up unexpectedly because WJ still owes her a favor but I actually like it. I think of it as more of a joke. The ladies seem to get along, referring to each other as Zhirou jiejie and Zhao jia meizi. That’s indicative of their respect, which could also mean that they just want WJ to treat them well, and if they end up all being together in order to live happily then so be it. One man, multiple wives. It’s only open-ended on the logistics of how they intend to live, but as for who WJ chooses, he already answered that.

In any case, this was the 2nd edition translation, which I thoroughly enjoyed and I appreciate Jinyong keeping it lighthearted in the end. Yes, MM does leave everything behind to follow WJ. Yes, ZR doesn’t get punished severely but her guilt is something she’ll always carry with her. Yes, WJ is dumb and gets tricked into leaving Ming Cult.

In some ways, I’m sad that 2019 series didn’t do all those things (which was my first confused/shocked feeling after finishing the series), but on the other hand, we got to explore characters that upheld stronger beliefs in their national pride and family values. We got more political strife, more commitment in love, and even a way better ending for YL. Her ending in the book was open-ended because she just wanders off muttering about the WJ in her mind (like, dude! She’s still a lonely girl with a tragic past who doesn’t have any friends or family anymore! Just because she didn’t die doesn’t mean her problems aren’t still there! Are we just going to ignore her? Jinyong did). But in 2019 series she lives with her dad choosing to forget her tragedies, all while giving her blessings to our OTP in her heart. Way better.

In short, I now see the novel as one story and any live action drama as a separate story. I still say that 1986 and 2019 are my favourite series but I also really like the novel.

Thanks for reading my rambling. Now off to continue my rewatch of the show!

Oh! Hahaha, no, I was talking about the Vietnamese dubbed voices. @kimmortal had posted some videos of Vietnamese dubbed scenes with Vietnamese voice actors, and I don't much like Yukee's voice there. She sounds a bit more... "hao jie jie" like you put it. Viet fans have a whole community for that, and the TVB dubbed voices I was talking about are like old school Vietnamese dubs where a group of voice actors specifically only dubbed TVB series up until the last few years. I thought the Chinese dubs for this series (the regular screenplay without any international editing) were FANTASTIC. I truly thought they were Yukee's and Joseph's real voices until her I heard Yukee's real voice, which kind of shocked me haha.

Yeah, this is the difference between Vietnam Long Tieng and US Long Tieng. US are still dubbing Hong Kong shows but I find it’s getting more difficult to find USLT for Mainland china series. Like you, I grew up on USLT, but lately I’ve started watching VNLT (like Hoa Moc Lan Truyen Ky and Tan Anh Hung Xa Dieu) and I got used to it. I also appreciate how “soft and young” they sound compared to USLT which often sounded deeper and older.

This VNLT dub for HSDS is quite good so I’m really enjoying it. I can’t upload full eps to Youtube due to copyright but making the clips is fun!

Also from ep 42 I just realised WJ actually try to rub harder on the bite mark. so it can stay scarred longer, maybe?

I think this is because he couldn’t forget her, probably before the wedding?

Has anyone out there ever found a compilation video of all moments he was thinking about her?

And maybe a video with all cuts of Minmin fainting into Wuji’s arms? Lol

That whole suicide thingy is so fake and dumb. Oh my goodness - but all those Ming people just believed it. It's so frustrating. ZR must have felt that she's losing WJ fast and the suicide act will get him back to her.

UGh! In the book, she manipulated a lowly Ming Cult member that was attracted to her by visiting him and looking all sad as if she wanted to talk but couldn't bear to form words, then she left. This caused the guy to worry about her so he paid her a visit later and found her trying to hang herself. (Scheming much?) Wuji returns, revives her, sees this act, feels all guilty so he pushes the wedding sooner.

All of you are right in that book Wuji is so different (yes, he kisses everybody several times very deeply on the lips LOL) in how he develops throughout the story that certain scenes needed to be changed to suit his personality. I still think the Beggar Sect bell scene would have still worked because in that scene Wuji was "acting" distant and mean to MM, while she was charming and kind to him, but in his heart he was conflicted. That would have still worked with Joseph and Yukee. Just throw that in right after he rescues her and before he strangles her.

I also want to see ZR try to assassinate MM because it showed how ruthless and evil she was, yet also very powerful in a short period of time.

Also, like people have said before, book MM never tried to implicate ZR because she's too smart to bother. But Yukee's MM confronted her out in the open, which wasn't as smart. Still, it made for some nice gifs of Joseph's eyes as we fans figured out that he's starting to suspect that something isn't right but just won't say it.

Sorry to keep making comparisons between 2019's show and book. Reading the book is how I'm managing my withdrawal. The book gives me more cute scenes and I just picture Joseph and Yukee in my mind.

  14. Gah! I really wished they’d kept

    1) The dialogue about MM owing WJ a wedding night and him pretending to bite her hand.

    2) The scene where WJ wanders aimlessly into the restaurant just before his wedding and sees MM sitting sadly by herself (and she kisses him)

    3) The scene where they hide in the bell at Beggar Sect meeting and eavesdrop on Wulin gossip (people are nosy, aren’t they?). They sat soo closely and MM didn’t know about the tragedies so she was extemely affectionate toward him. He in return, squeezed her arm and made her cry silently. Yikes!

    4) The scene where she lies to her father about being his woman already so they’d let them go.

    5) The scene where they brave dangers in that temple full of fake Shaolin disciples of Cheng Kun.

    6) Their days spent at the little house close to Shaolin Temple where they pretend to be farmer husband and wife.

    7) Zhou Zhirou sneak attack wanting to kill MM

This is as far as I got in the novel. Why, oh why did they not shoot these scenes? Was it because previous adaptations already had them? I’m not bored watching these again :P

  15. Sorry to keep bombarding this forum with my thoughts, but I have nowhere else to express them. Who can I talk to? My coworkers or my babies? Lol

Reading WJ and ZR on the island was so difficult. First, ZR is a liar and hypocrite. Second, every sentence that comes out of ZR’s mouth is her comparing herself with Minmin at best, and at worst accusing WJ of having feelings for MM (granted, she’s correct). But my god, any conversation between them was always about MM or the hypothetical question of what he would do to ZR if she ever makes (read: made) a mistake. I know the reader is privy to only relevant plot-related convos of theirs, but it still seems like their whole relationship was always going to be defined by the fact that it didn’t work out between WJ and the other girls so that’s why the only option left was ZR. That’s not how you want to start a relationship lol.

I know some fans are still upset that WJ (either in the novel or in 2009’s series) was portrayed as only choosing MM because she was the “last girl left standing”, but it seems to me that THIS Snake Island moment between ZR and WJ in the novel shows what it would have looked like if WJ truly picked whoever was left, as if to tell readers, hey look Wuji settled for whoever was there and he was unenthused and reluctant. Compare that with how he ended up with MM, he wasn’t unenthused and reluctant, he was happy. Now, does he still think about the others? Perhaps, but it’s like relishing in a beautiful past memory. As long as he keeps it quiet in his heart and mind, it’s not a crime.
