Eng translation summary in this twitter thread

Korean fan's thread (can use translator)

There is one part that both twitters said differently.

About Sobong account, the first twitter said SHS didn't manage the account herself, but the Korean twitter said she confirmed she managed it herself.

Have a nice Friday and weekend !!!  :heart4:

Yes, Shin Hye Sun, Mr. Queen and we fans have been suffering a lot..  :P

At first there were many speculations about BL part and absurd comedy from original drama.  Then the Covid affected their shooting schedule and also the casts needed to test for Covid. Next it was neglected by Netflix (I'm still mad that Netflix didn't air Mr. Queen, now they started promoting Vincenzo. So it means they intentionally skip Mr. Queen).  And after airing there were also those controversies which made me sad for a while.

But despite all of those hardship, nothing could stop this drama from being a big hit. It gained no. 1 rating from the first to latest episode and all main/supporting casts received high recognition and praises.  And now there is going to be spin-off episodes.

I'm so proud of Shin Hye Sun.

  3. After watching movie ‘Tenet’ I am amazed that it’s quite similar to Mr. Queen.

The main concept of ‘Tenet’ is what was called ‘Temporal pincer’ .

Here we have a normal person who travel forward in time. And simultaneously that same person in the future has a way to invert his entropy and travel backward in time through portal called ‘turnstile’. So we have a person who started from the ending point of an event and travel backward and met the same person who knows what happened at the beginning side. Both will share the experiences of both ends and with that knowledge they can change the course of event and create another parallel universe of different outcome.

If we started with a theory that the soul of Bong Hwan and So Yong is actually the same entity but existed in different times. And somehow entropy of Bong Hwan’s soul was inverted and traveled back in time with the knowledge of history and cooking skill (and also modern vocabularies) while the entity of So Yong’s soul travelled forward in time (with knowledge of what happened between SY and CJ) and both met at ‘turnstile’ or portal which is the lake/pool and shared knowledge to each other and then changed the fate of So Yong and Cheol Jong.

Spoiler alert - reveal ending of ‘Tenet’

    Spoiler

At the end of ‘Tenet’, the protagonist realized it was himself in the past who knew what will happened in the future so he set up the team and recruited himself in the future to join the mission.

It’s similar to Mr. Queen in Ep 1 when Bong Hwan fell into the pool , it’s So Yong who swam to him and kissed him, can be assumed it’s the moment that So Yong recruited Bong Hwan because she knew this is herself in the future who can change the fate of her and Cheol Jong.

Now it sounds more like a sci-fi period drama rather than fantasy-period drama.

Probably I thought too much after watching a drama and a movie...

I just don’t want myself to have a headache alone, so shared it here.

  4. Hi,

As this twitter shared in this thread earlier, I am also worried about the possibility that it's the interview scene after BH woke up at the end.

Because I want this drama to end happily so I can't admit to myself that this will happen.  :bawling:

I've been thinking about this for 2 days and tried to find some points to prove that this scene happened before Bong Hwan became So Yong.

    iCwnrUF.jpg

In Ep 01 he talked about a chef of emperor Qin Shi who invented fish cakes and his opinion was that "the chef was very lucky".

But in EP 12 after banquet, So-Bong said this

    IUqu8Y6.jpg

After his experience in Joseon, his thought changed that the chef wasn't lucky but got inspiration from his determination to live.

So the interview scene in EP 1 should happen before BH became SY and I can still maintain my hope for a happy ending

     :hooray:

This video talks about the influence of eyebrows.

It compared Shin Hye Sun vs Tang Wei who have the same age, same body shape and same eyes shape but why both have different images and feels ?

Because Shin Hye Sun's eyebrows are thicker and straight (only have angle at the end) like male cartoon character in animation movie.  This also gave feeling of plain, innocent person.

In Mr. Queen she painted her eyebrows darker which suited her male character.  Video also compared that her eyebrows are almost the same shape as Park Seo Joon.

On the other hand, Tang Wei's eyebrows are thinner and more arc, like female character in animation, giving more feminine or chic feeling.

    zcIIhAW.png

    LSsy6GH.png

Just change her eyebrows style from actual (left) to new (right), we can see the different images.

(personally I think her thick straight eyebrows help emphasize her eyes, and it's probably a secret that made us feel emotion from her eyes when she acted, from the left image, her eyes seems losing some power).

  6. Hi everyone, love to see your all, my friends, especially @meechuttso who is back again

    i7cGKa7.jpg

Actually nowadays I'm so happy and feel content with Mr. Queen and all Hye Sun's success.  Not only me that loves this drama but also my mom and my colleagues who are not even K-drama fans.     And I am so glad that now SHS became popular in my country (at last !!!), I read lots of comments from local fangirls (and fanboys) saying they fell in love with her in this drama and now they started to watch her previous works.  Moreover, many local newspapers and popular webpages also wrote articles about Mr. Queen and Hye Sun. Sobong's meme (and also Choi Sanggung's meme) are now popular.  Mr. Queen rank no. 1 top viewer for Viu application in my country for 4 consecutive weeks.  Local K-drama facebook all talked about this drama (each post with 500-1K comments that I read them all :P)  I can't believe this is really happening.  :bawling::kiss_wink:   I think all of you who has been Hye Sun fans longer than me understand my feeling when seeing our beloved actress whom we supported finally reached this point.

I'm really enjoying Mr Queen and so proud of the entire cast. Can't believe Hae Sun Instagram has gone from 1m followers to 1.5m followers which shows how she has become a household name.

I recall an IG post from the writer-nim before the drama started shooting that he said 'The script has been finished, so please take care of it."  I think right now he must be very pleased that his work was taken care so well by all casts , director and staffs.   For SHS IG, wow...I can't believe either that last time it took a whole year to gain 500K followers, but now it increases 100K in every week.  :hwaiting:

Each week's routine I just watched Mr. Queen 3 times per episode, discussed with my mom and friends , watched BTS video, checked IG and twitters and saved all those beautiful things and those activities already took all of my free time and then the new episode came out and started the new cycle again.   I'm so sorry about the wix page. I realized I didn't have time to keep posting all update things in my blogs. I also feel like I don't have anything more to write or add in my blog because out there it was already overwhelmed with many fans' opinions and good stuffs about this drama and SHS.   I feel the same as meechuttso here.

Contentment is a strangely boring thing.

And another reason is that there were more viewers in my blog.  I don't know who they are, besides all of my friends here. Actually I am grateful for everyone who spent time reading my little blog :kiss_wink: it's just my personal problem that when I reached a point in doing something that became bigger and required energy than my expectatoin , I just feel shy and embarrassed to go on. So I think I'd better spend my time enjoying these days of Shin Hye Sun dominating the world.  :P

    Spoiler

I just found this in mydramalist, someone put SHS as a cast in this short movie

I've tried to look for her in the movie but coudn't find.   :crazymad:

Can someone with good eyes help me ?

Or is the information incorrect ?

    HYESUN IG LIVE TODAY!

    SHE'S LOOKING SO EVER RAVISHING!

Some translation gathered from Eng and Korean twitters (my apology for any incorrect and my grammar :P)

    • She said she just finished shooting movie today and going back home. Someone asked how about tomorrow, she said tomorrow she will be at home.
    • She also mentioned about KJH that he's good at live IG and she said she's close to him because of shooting Mr. Queen together for many months. (from May till Jan)
    • For favorite dish, she said she likes sweet and sour pork
    • For beverage she likes ice choco, mint choco and tea. But doesn't like drinking coffee
    • For icecream, she likes walnut icecream, but actually she just likes all flavours of icecream
    • Asked whether she likes playing game, she said she didn't play game much because she's not good at it.
    • She was asked twice if she's having a boyfriend and she said no (but when answered the 2nd time she blushed). But she said she also wanted to have a date.
    • She was asked to give a wink and later she said she did the right eye wink better than left eye (and show us)
    • Asked about her phone, she said she's using Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus
    • She's taking the role of influencer in the new movie she's shooting (She's Dead). So she said she's trying to be familiar with doing live broadcast. (But it seems that she didn't do it often. At the end she wanted to end the live IG but didn't know how to do it - so cute :kiss_wink: )
    • At first she intened to do the live IG until the battery ran out, but being in the car and had to look at the screen and read many messages gave her motion sickness, so she ended her live sooner (someone commented probably this is the first time that celebrity IG live was ended due to motion sickness  - YNK also said in twitter that next time they will tell SHS to prepare motion sickness medicine in her purse )

    ‘철인왕후’ 혐한·역사왜곡 논란 속 돌아봐야 할 것은…

Looking back at the anti-Korean and historical distortion controversies of 'Mr. Queen'

    1. The controversy about the writer of original novel is anti-Korean

"The fact that Korean, Chinese, and Japanese content is shared with the public across national borders and controversy is broadcast live on the Internet has a heated side. As nationalism in Korea, China, and Japan was strengthened and the controversies over Hanbok and Kimchi became more sensitive, the confrontation against their own culture is on the way. Of course, anti-Korean is bad. In other words, contempt for other cultures in other countries is wrong. However, the appropriate behavior that fits in the era of 'Trans Asia' where contents can come across each other is not a 'Rage against anti-Korean' or a 'Nationalism Olympics'. From us, it is time to look back to whether there has been a disproportionate or insensitive cultural appropriation to other countries in the Korean Wave content. If you are country who exports cultural content exporter, you must have a global sense."

    2. The controversy over history distortion

The production crew apologized for the criticism that the line “The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty is just a tabloid” disparaged the value of the Annals. However, it is questionable whether the value of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which is a UNESCO World Recorded Cultural Heritage, was degraded.Isn't it just a line that expresses the confusion experienced by modern people who have time slipped in his tone? Of course, it is understandable that it provided a source of misunderstanding to foreign viewers who did not know what the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty or Royal Ancestral rites music were, not Korean viewers. However, if you are a foreign viewer with common sense, you will see it in consideration of the genre and between-the-line meaning. For example, there will not be many foreign viewers who see 'Kingdom' and believe that the Joseon Dynasty was a zombie den.

In fact, that dialogue is not the authentic story represented by the Annals, but it contains the imagination of the other side of unrecorded history. The 'how' and 'why' are important. To imagine the other side of history is not a distortion of history....(this part the writer referred to another Korean movie which I don't have enogh knowledge to translate, so I skipped).....'Queen Cheorin' imagined a different Cheoljong other than the Cheoljong recorded in the dynasty. It is an imagination that Cheoljong, who was recorded as the “Scarecrow/puppet King,” caught in the gap of the sedo politics, tried to reform Joseon through his double life. This idea is not unfamiliar. If King Jeongjo, Crown Prince Sohyeon, and Gwanghaegun had succeeded in reforming, the nation's good luck would not have changed, and would not have been constantly looking for candidates for reform monarchs.

As part of such imagination, it is projecting the last hope of the dying Joseon to Cheoljong. In particular, isn't it interesting to him, who is a 'Boy from Ganghwa', because it can give him a people's character that no king of Joseon ever has.

    3. The controvery of using real historical figures of supporting characters

Poongyangjo's clan association responsed with strong warning, saying that it had damaged the honor of a supporting character (Queen Shinjeong). The production crew changed the family name to'Pung Anjo' and'Ansong Kim' in the introduction section of the website. There was a controversy over the role of admiral 'Bae-Seol' in the movie 'Roaring Currents' (명량). This is because the movie did not sympathize with the descendants who are angry with the ancestor's defamation after seeing historical creations. If you are a citizen of a modern country, you must object the history of the ruined old system. The history like the people of the Joseon Dynasty is not supposed to be privatized as the work of my family. It is true that Andong Kim clan and Poong Yangjo clan contributed to the ruin of the country. If you dare to identify yourself as a member of a family rather than a citizen of a modern state, regret/remorse on the actions of your ancestors should be taken precedence.

    4. The criticism of parodying the name of the'Octagon' club

In particular, the controversy is growing as the co-production company'Studio Plex' is found to be a subsidiary of YG Entertainment, which was involved in the Burning Sun case. The scene of the'Octajeong' gisaeng house is controversial in many ways. Although it seems to be a disgusting representation of the room salon culture, it is because a queer element is found in the guest reception scene after recognizing that (So Yong/Bong Hwan) is a man and woman (transvestite). Opinions are divided on whether to view it as a transsexual fantasy (of a man) disguised as a woman or as a lesbian practice of a transvestite with a soul of a straight man. In fact, the setting that the soul of a modern man dwelled in the body of the queen itself has the strong meaning of gender confusion. It is still too early to predict the way the drama will turn into. However, in the midst of that, Shin Hye Sun's acting, who leads 90 % of the play, is outstanding. For the time being, I want to watch more of the drama with the heart of supporting Shin Hye Sun.

I think during this time it’s better for production team and actors to lay low so they will not be a target too much and wait for Ep3 to come out and let the rating shows that many people still support and enjoy the drama.

This morning tvN just release more preview.

From Ep3 synopsis in official website, I think there shouldn’t be much controversy.

  10. Today I read a post from Korean webboard that interpreted and explained the meaning of opening intro.

I don't know if it will be accurate to what will happen in the drama.

But I think there are many interesting points, so please allow me to share here.

All explanation and gifs credited to original writer of this post.  :heart4:

    (spolier alert)

    kvxXV79.gif

The scene showed the past of young Won-Beom (Cheol Jong) alone in the well.

He fell into a well when a child, facing difficult situation alone.

And a flower petal (So Yong) was falling to Won-Beom in that well, probably to rescue him.

    V5ECPfK.gif

The first appearance scene of Choel Jong will flower petals falling down is similar to what happened to him in the well.

    Ueeb55y.gif

Cheol Jong noticed the falling flower petal on the head of So Yong. This could mean something.

Probably seeing petal always reminded him of the incident when he was young.

    Spoiler

    0DAXNzu.gif

The scene from teaser, Cheol Jong had a nightmare and in his sleep he embraced (someone in his dream) and said "You save me 'again' (네가 또 나를 구했구나)"

    What did he mean 'again'?

So he was saved once in the past and he was dreaming of that person.

(Remark - Probably he was saved by So Yong, however, later he was sent to GangHwa Island and didn't know who she was. But when So Yong met him again when she was selected as a queen she might recognize him and fell in love with him. I think if Cheol Jong knew who she was in the past then he will feel sentimental with her. Probably the scene at the lake, So Yong might tell him about the past and his feeling started to change but because of her late cruel behaviour, he still didn't know which one was her real personality and had conflict on if he should love or hate her).

From the casting news and IG, both are child actors who took the role of young So Yong and Won Beom. So there will surely be the scene telling their childhood story in the drama.

    The next scene.

    Plate with pattern = Palace

Water in the plate = Lake in the palace

Petal floating on the water on the plate = So Yong who fell into the lake in the palace

    Au2cHbv.gif

This scene showed egg-topping rice bowl on a white plate in the center of the table, and also steak on a square wooden plate, meaning of So Yong (Bong Hwan) who is a chef but now he was in conflict between traditional Korean and modern culture. The surrounding food are also means people who surrounding So Young in the palace.

The life in palace of awaken Bong Hwan was expressed here with metaphor of cooking/food, and he also overcame the difficulties with his cooking skill.

    JgsCT32.gif

An arrow shot by So Yong/Bong Hwan went pass through the table and the food.

    Table = Palace

Modern Food = So Yong/Bong Hwan

Palace Food = Palace People, Palace Life

So Yong/Bong Hwan, who shot a big bow and overcame the many difficulties of life in the palace

    9E30BNC.gif

The moon floating in the night sky = Won Beom/Cheol Jong at night with a lot of troubles

The scene changed from Cheol Jong/Won Beom at night to a scene with the moon and the sun floating around.

    Moon = Cheol Jong/Won Beom
    Sun = So Yong

It also expresses the Won Beom who led a different life between day and night

And with influence from So Yong, Won Beom was gradually changing and growing into the true king Cheol Jong.

    bYg5oRB.gif

Eventually the moon (Won Beom) and the sun (So Yong) merged into one.
All misunderstandings and conflicts were resolved and the two eventually became one.

It is a total solar eclipse where the moon and sun become one.

And no need to explain, it also means the merging of Bong Hwan's soul and So Yong's body.

It turned out that the day Bong Hwan and So Yong fell into the water was a total solar eclipse. So the souls may swap back again on the day of the total solar eclipse.
(Remark - this sentence I translated from original post, so I'm not sure it's just a metaphor of solar eclipse or the solar eclipse was actually happened on the day that So Yong fell into the lake).

It can be interpreted that at the end the love of Cheol Jong and So Yong is possible.
And Bong Hwan went back to his time safely.
(Remark - This one also from the original post , but in my opinion another possible ending is that Bong Hwan completely transformed into So Yong and in love with Cheol Jong like in Go Princess Go).

    rWS1OpA.gif

    The last scene.

Queen Cheorin surrounded by flowers and butterflies.

Giving hint of a happy ending.

(Remark - I think butterfly also represents transformation or rebirth. It can be interpreted that Bong Hwan transformed into So Yong, or it can be the original soul of So Yong comes back and after conflicts with the king resolved then reborns into sweet and nice person ? Only way to know is to keep watching until the end !! ).

Again, all credit to the original post.

Still, I don't understand why this drama production didn't just use fictional character for royalties like King, Queen and Queen Dowager? Less problem for sure especially with those funny censored 19+ scenes LOL

    Intereting question.  Why ?

I think the reason they used real historical persons is that the writer intended to have Bong Hwan uses his history knowledge to make some impacts or change the course of history.  So the queen can have more parts in political plot and still maintain the attention as the key person. That's the thing lacking in 'Go Princess Go' which after the queen became more feminine I found her character became quite boring.

They also chose to use the weak puppet king Cheol Jong because they can create more interesting character by giving him dual personality. He is smart but he has to hide his ability. It's different from the original Chinese version that everyone in the palace knows the king is smart and is skillful warrior but that made him quite a bland character.

Being appear as weak person and has lots of enemies in the palace requires Cheol Jong to find allies and later he will find it with So Yong when her knowledge proves useful. It's interesting to see the king and the queen being the same team fighting both Kim and Jo clans together to gain true power.  I think in later episode it will be less 'comedy' but will become more of 'fusion'.

I agreed that those 19+ censored scene of the queen dowager probably crossed the fine thin line of some audiences.  But in the overall the reference to historical figures is still important to make the story and characters more serious/interesting and not too much absurd like the original version.

    Spoiler

The more I think of it...

    Is it possible that...

It's all planned by tvN to make all of those controversies.

There are lots of complaining in 4 different issues from just only 2 episodes, it's not normal thing.

And today tvN came out to make apology statement and promise to delete those scenes from replay service, but they still emphasize the theme of this drama as 'fusion', 'fantasy', 'comedy'.

    And from now on .....

    - the supporter will always support

    - the neutral will know about this drama and eager to watch to see what makes the controvesies like this

    - the hater will also watch because they want to check if there will be any more scenes to complain.

It's the twist of twist of twist

  12.

    My personal opinion.

The producion team and the beginning of drama already stated clearly that the drama is fictional and the characters and events are unrelated to historical events. Also they already presented this drama as 'fusion' + 'comedy' + 'sageuk' drama , they didn't say or try to sell it as a sageuk 'based on true story with accurate historical fact'. I think most audiences can distinguish between comedy vs reality.

Regarding the issue about the original story was from Chinese writer who is anti-Korean, it has nothing to do with the content of drama.

Instead I think this drama's trying to present a lot about historical Korean costumes, foods, royal manners, wedding ceremony, political conflict between Andong Kim and Pungyang Jo clan. Everything may not be 100% accurate becaust it's a comedy drama, but it helped made more people interested and want to know more about Korean cultures.  And also the production, story and especially acting in this Korean version are far better than the original. I think Korean people should be more proud that their country has many talented actors and production teams to make a good drama like this from original low-cost drama to achieve this kind of love and attention worldwide.

Another thing I want to point out is that Bong Hwan is the character who represents the view of us audiences in the modern time on how we sometimes look back to our own historical cultures, because of time differences or our lack of enough understanding, at first we may find it wierd or ridiculous the way Bong Hwan felt. But I believe in the later episode when Bong Hwan spends more times in that era and gradually transformed to be So Yong, he/she will becomes appreciated the value and nostalgic beauty of the past cultures. I think that's also a thing that this drama wants to add.

And every scene, the costumes, her hair, the headgear, the camera angles to her beauteous and ever-morphable face, so enchanting, enchanted. So I am going to watch everything at least twice and enjoy every bite of this royal feasting every weekend until spring time!

Totally agreed with this. I feel so content after long wait.

And there're 20 episodes for this drama..For me it can be compensate as if I watch her movie 10 times.

  15. Some part from press conference interview today.

'Queen Cheorin' is a new adaptation of a web drama that aired in China in 2016, and the copyright was purchased (to remake) in Korea.

Director Yoon Sung Shik said “When planning with the original copyright, we only brought the set-up that the soul of a modern man, especially a playboy entered the crown princess” And “The rest of the story and scenes can be seen as completely different. The original work focused on B-class sexy comedy, but we had to approach it with a universal sensibility, so the sexy code was refined to the level of a 15-year-old viewer rate, and the chemistry of So Yong and Cheol Jong as a show-window couple, surrounding story of cooking, story of Cheol Jong's secret and dream, and the unfolding twists were added to the original story of utter dislike between Cheol Jong and the queen."

It is a fusion historical drama with comedy. I wish you watch it with the word fusion in mind. It's the scenario that takes place when the modern soul enters a specific role rather than the historical facts of real people in history, so I wanted to start the story from the imagination and expectation of what could be different from reality. In particular, Cheol Jong was chosen because Cheol Jong appeared as a weak king at the time that Joseon Dynasty declined most. If such a king meets an impact that can change reality, so I chose from imagination and hope to see what if the future could be different.
