Watching ep 2 is like watching a separate movie, I almost forgot ep 1 and how it connects to ep 2. This is actually a refreshing concept in a drama. So like Arth is the advanced civilization while Wahan is shown to be the people still learning it. So now that it's implied that Eun Som is Aramun, then it actually fits SJK's character description as conqueror of Arthdal. Just that Aramun is supposed to be the god and the founder of Arthdal Nation, so am still quite confused on that part.

Tan Ya is described as the 'one who breaks the shell', so idk if Eun Som will be the one who will bring disaster. Though I believe that that 'disaster' doesn't necessarily mean bad for all. Both born in the same day during the Azure Comet so they are already connected. Tan Ya led Eun Som to Wahan. So everything is according to the prophecy. I'm so looking forward to how these two children of prophecy will stand against these barbaric Sarams of Arth. I remember when the writers said that Tan Ya may seem weak but she's the scariest of them. Looking forward to that as well:D.

Eun Som i guess will be the true ruler and will create the real nation for all of Arthdal, i agree that episode 2 was miles better then episode 1 and i think thats because it focused only in one area.

I think like many prophecies they are just misunderstood and like @ForgottenSoulx said he will more than sure bring calamity upon the tribes that slaughtered and took what didn't belong to them for their own greed in his name...Also,people from Whan Tribe might think for a moment that indeed be is a bringer of death like it was said but later on they will realize he is actually the saviour of them...

Usually in this type of stories(fantasy) the chosen one is born in a time of great distress and is meant to bring peace and prosperity and punish the sinners and we kinda saw how EunSeom was born...I doubt that the Gods would stay idle and watch this people do sooo heinous things in his name...Like we saw in this episode when The Elder ones of the tribe spoke in private about one of the prophecies and what it meant the Elder Mother that it wasn't meant to be interpreted as bad or good and to see the great picture behind the words...

So I for one i'm quite eager to see EunSeom journey in descovering who he is and what his destiny is...

Exactly hes the bringer of death and destruction to the people who deserve it and the saviours for the people these aggressors have attacked.

I just tuned on this drama because of song joong ki and needless to say i am hooked.... 2nd episode threw the light that eun some can be aramun .. but how it is supposed to bring bad luck... That's the biggest question

Bad luck for who is the question to the aggressive killers or to the people hes around. I think he will bring bad luck to the aggressors by destroying them.

The heavier emphasis of this angle of ming-yuan battle are the different factor that separate this version from other prev versions for me. From this angle,  perhaps the best case scenario (at least for me)  would be: ZM waited for him in Mongolia as she had originally wanted, while he fought the battle. Ming members never found out she's still alive so no room of underhanded schemes to use her from his members. Just focused on the battle with her dynasty. No matter what the outcomes are,  it would depend on the battle they fought, not some unfair schemes hatched to unfairly get the upper hands in the raging fight. Fairer for both sides. But perhaps this storyline would be too straightforward for a tv series.

No intended offense or ill intention whatsoever please.  Sorry if this sounds rude, not my intention please.

    Peace all!!

This is what i think would have been a better ending also the sword and saber were pretty meaningless to me.. they did nothing in this show.

I can actually understand both sides ZM gave up everything for WJ but they would not accept her and used her but i understand why they would not accept her when the enemy is her father. I mean that is pretty hard to get past and accept especially considering what shes done in the past.

Did anyone see also that this series will be split into 3 season with the last season airing in september which gives it like a 2 month off from season 2 to season 3? Anyone seen any drama like this before because it really doesn't make sense in my mind to give it a break when filming was already completed.

Gives time for another drama to air in the middle so they can work on FX.

    Some cheap scenes:

    • The forest scene, especially when they kill the blue blood dude, it looked like he was throwing up fluoride paint like the one we used at school.
    •  ES mother inside the cavern
    • The skull at the party thing!! LMAO, even bigger than his head.
    • When ES is walking with is mom in that desert

I actually think that a story CAN and will be judged, this has actually something to do with the people in front and behind the camera: the actors with their performance, the director, writters, make up artist, etc. Every one has a input in the drama (in different degrees of course). And so far Arthdal is much ado about almost nothin, story wise and narrative rhythm.

I mean of course the story will be judged but not just from one episode and i thought the blue blood was pretty cool , never noticed anything wrong inside the cavern but i agree that ES walking in the desert did look a bit cheap.

The main issue raised by well known critics for Game of Thrones was mostly on the character developments. Like for instance how Daenerys suddenly became a mad queen without properly establishing the prelude to it. All the other issues were fans issues. GOT has the most obsessed fandom ever. This is why anyone copying it in some aspects can expect reactions from GOT fanatics.

So this is my concern about Arthdal Chronicles, they have a complex plot but they only made 18 episodes.(Although I honestly laughed at the poor quality of poster and SJK make up.)

Which poor quality of poster and am i the only one who likes the make up?

    • Jang Dong Gun looks fine with his mane of glory
    • The story (and bad cgi/make up) kinda reminds me of a 2007 korean drama: "The Legend/Legend", just that in Legend, the story was kinda good.
    • The scenes were cheap, idk if it's the ligth/palette/the cameras, but with so much publicity and hype, the truth is that Arthdal falls short
    • And last but not least: Song Joong Ki's lipstick...

I'll give one o two more eps, but so far, the first ep was meh and wtf-y

Which make up did you have issue with apart from the lipstick and which scenes were cheap just curious?

I dont think the story can really be judged and the people behind this show will make a good story.

Totally agree with you on this. Towards the end, I really did wish he left them. In other versions, I always root for Ming Sect, but this one was impossibly. Only Yang Xiao was their saving grace, but he barely got any screentime! Still wish they added MAYBE like 1-2 more episodes. We could have used a more fleshed out ending.

Also, found some more amazing Fan MVs on bili. I love that it's been 1-2 months since the series has ended and there's still content on it. YAY!

    1. https://www.bilibili.com/video/av54202949?from=search&seid=6899337818801100270 -- MUST WATCH. Absolutely adore this one. Firstly because I love the female version of this song and not sure if this was just a male cover, but his voice is nice and I love anything that symbolizes Wu Ji's perspective. The editing really portrayed Wu Ji's love for Zhao Min, which is again, something I love and crave. The hairpin was such a nice touch at the end. ONE OF MY FAVE FMV!

    YOUTUBE VER.

    2. https://www.bilibili.com/video/av54239335?from=search&seid=6899337818801100270 -- Love this song, good pacing and editing.

In the other versions is the ming sect better cause i really disliked them here ;p but im a big fan of the actors of WJ/ZM i knew about Chen Yu Qi before but was not that impressed but she won be over with this drama her acting was really good. Joseph Zeng im a fan of as well im excited to see where he goes and what he does next.

  9. Finally finished so will give a few thoughts.

The first 40 episodes were like 10/10 for me but i feel like the last 10 episodes were super rushed and Wuji became way to forgiving towards his cult who were clearly using him.It was so obvious that the 4th general was working against wuji and building his own powerbase which he later used to become emperor in the book. Surely that was obvious as hell and super predictable, another annoyance was how whishy washy everyone was in this show apart from ZM no-one was ever sticking to their opinions and just agree with everyone it got super annoying by the end. Yang Xiao was the only cult member i liked by the end Fan Yao had no respect for Wuji at all which disappointed me.  Wuji was a character i loved and hated the most in this show i loved that he was pure and respects life and trusts people but that is also the reason i hate him a bit. I wish he had a backbone your the leader and the cult continues to do stuff behind your back and your super happy to their face and show no anger??

Wuji and ZM were clearly the endgame and i dont think Wuji had romantic feelings for anyone else. ZM was truly the saving grace of this show in the last 10 episodes for me . The ending felt a little rushed also they needed like another 10mins in my opinion to flesh out the ending properly cause we dont even know what really happens.

I rate this show 8.5/10 the last 10 episodes i struggled to finish honestly i did the first 40 in like 3 days then last 10 in 2/3 .. was super hard to finish but i still enjoyed the show overall i just like Male character leads with a bit more backbone but still loved Wuji for the most part. I loved that they did not use CGI alot if at all to me this was a big bonus and the acting was good especially young wuji.

I think ill check out return of condor heroes the 2017 version and see how this story goes.

Just watched episode 1 and thought it was a solid, strong start to the series. The script/plot wasn’t confusing at all and I like the embedded themes of identity and the sub-theme of humanity. I also didn’t have any problems with the production. Compared to other historical-fantasy K-dramas, this is show clearly has a stronger production. Ragaz and the kid who played teenage Tagon did very well and stole every scene they were in. Young boy Eunsoem is a cutie and good too.  KOB is so pretty, JDG looking good - the second leads left a strong impression from the get go.

Despite some stylistic similarity to GOT  - which is surprisingly minimal, especially for all the comparisons online. I am also not seeing any similarity or that this show is trying to be like a Korean GOT etc. On this note, I do think that this kind of thinking is why so many people dislike the show and find many faults. Like someone said - it was the same when Scarlet Heart - Moon Lovers came out. Someone also said that this show may not be popular with the older gen.; I disagree. I am 42 and didn’t find the show too young for my taste at all.

I also enjoyed the mom + Aramun god scenes. The question really is: did the god used mom to bring E to the lark or did she bring the girl to the god? Let’s see....

    Spoiler

I think the god brought E to the girl.

This drama will only have 18 episodes divided by 3 so only 6 episodes per Season. How can it wrapped up everything without sacrificing the plot?

Game of Thrones fan here and the finale GoT season was highly criticized due to being hurried.

From the pilot episode, the plot looks as complicated as GoT and 18 episodes only? I highly doubt if they can do justice to every character's storyline.

Okay, even if let's not talk about Game of Thrones, even compared to other hit KDramas with complex plot, the others had more than 20 episodes.

Every episode will be super long i think its enough time and GOT had bigger issues then it being rushed.

Could maybe have more seasons depending how it ends and how well it does.

I do think they were expecting Mr Sunshine levels or higher success though.

THe overall production in terms of outfit, CG, set etc just seems awkward and unconvincing. I doubt those who watched GOT would buy into this kind of production quality though.  Storyline doesn't bug me, the production quality did.

I disagree but everyone can have a different opinion i found the outfits totally fine the CG was also fine. I found the sets quite beautiful.

I watched the first and it was a bit confusing in the beginning so I had to watch it twice just to understand certain characters.  Eun som’s father - Ragaz, did he have a twin brother?  At the white mountain when the Saram were trying to make peace with the Neoanthals or the blue people, I swear it seemed like Ragaz had a twin. Or maybe it’s because of the way they transition the scene as they were leaving the mountain.

I dont think its that confusing and i would just assume they are different characters and not related until the show brings it up. If he has a twin and it was important it will be explained or would have been explained.

GAME OF THRONES fan obviously from my username so I am conflicted with this drama. The costumes and production are very GoT. Story about childhood friends and kidnapping is not so much. But quest for power is.

But Goodluck to SJK. I wish him success with this drama. :)

Literally nothing is like game of thrones wtf are people smoking lets not act like GOT has original costumes or production.

If anyone supports Tagon then they are evil though.. this guy i hope he gets killed in the worst way possible.

1986 is a much more tolerable Wuji and the plot is close enough to the book so that this version is easily watchable over and over again. That's why it's a classic and loved by fans. 5/5 stars.

Like others have said, for a happy ending for EVERYBODY, watch TVB's 2000 version. It's cute. But main lead is far too old to play Wuji. 3/5 stars.

I don't have much to say about 2003's. 2.5/5 stars.

In my opinion, 2009 follows the book in terms of characterizations, but that isn't a good point. It's a criticism. 2009's Wuji is annoying and wishy-washy and unclear -- even by the end -- who he really loves (even if he says who) and that ending didn't help. The ending is exactly like the book, which most people hated. Most of the plot is close to the book as well. 3/5 stars.

This 2019 is still a must-watch because Wuji is one that we've never seen before. This is the first time that it's obvious who he's in love with and the obstacle that keeps them apart is not any love triangle (or pentagon?) but more the discord between Han and Mongolian. The political side of the book is more fleshed out and I think it's executed well. The national loyalties/pride of both Wuji and Zhao Min is focused on more. 4.5/5 stars.

Maybe ill try to watch the 1986 version but it might be hard to watch due to bad quality i guess.

I love this Wuji i have not watched the others but i really like how pure he is even though its to much at times.

Return is currently in production, they should air end of the year (I hope anyway) or next year, the most likely I guess.

Legend and Return is more closely related since it is a sequel that happen 17-18 years later I think after Legend. HSDS is farther away like 90-100 years later after LOCH, so even if you don't watch Legend or Return you can still follow it. The link is only that the Sword and Sabre was made by GJ-HR (main chara of LOCH) and also later on there will a character that is loosely related to YG-XLN (the main chara of ROCH). But for the story plot itself HSDS does not relate with Legend or Return at all, so you can watch it even if you have no knowledge of Legend or Return.

Where did you guys watch is it this?

I hate that it doesnt include poems and chinese sayings though.

Imho, yes it's very good, even though the front half could be a slog in some part. It also suffered overused of slow-mo in earlier episodes. If you don't know anything about HSDS I would recommend you watch from the beginning, especially now that the english sub is available in YT. It is a very good adaptation of a classix wuxia novel. If by episode 24 you still don't like it then you can drop it, I know it seems like a ridiculous request to ask a person to watch until halfway, but that's when one of the most important character show up.

    Cheers, hope it helps ^_^

I know these shows are like a trilogy you dont need to watch the others?
