CALL Books Netflix Release on November 27

Thriller Is Latest Commercial Korean Film to Pivot to Streaming Release

UfeUCJvoFYPxkURhoyFH.jpg

The upcoming thriller CALL with PARK Shin-hye and JUN Jong-seo has become the latest mainstream Korean film to abandon a planned theatrical release in favor of a global streaming launch on Netflix. The streamer will debut the film online in its 190 markets on November 27.

CALL was originally scheduled to open in March but distributor Next Entertainment World (NEW) cancelled the release in late February, when the first major COVID-19 spike hit Korea in Daegu. The film was among the first wave of Korean titles that delayed their releases in 2020. It is the second major Korean film to skip theaters entirely and go straight to Netflix, following Time to Hunt, which similarly had to forego a late February release before finding its way to Netflix in April.

Rumors have been swirling in the media recently that several major Korean blockbusters, such as the SF action-drama SPACE SWEEPERS and the SF fantasy-drama WONDERLAND have also been in talks with the streamer, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Also rumored to be heading to Netflix is PARK Hoon-jung’s crime drama Night in Paradise (2019), which was recently screened at the Venice International Film Festival.

The feature debut of director LEE Chung-hyunCALL is a thriller about two women who are living in the same house twenty years apart but are connected by an old cordless phone. PARK Shin-hye recent scored a hit in the zombie drama #ALIVE alongside YOO Ah-in, which had a successful theatrical release before also being released globally by Netflix. The film also features JUN Jong-seo in her second screen role, following her breakout debut in LEE Chang-dong’s BURNING (2018), which screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and became the first ever Korean film shortlisted for the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards.

'Call' Park Shin-Hye x Jeon Jong-seo, a chemistry completed with beautiful acting.. "Proof of female character strength"

Input 2020.11.19. 8:19 am
Movie poster

The movie'Call' is raising expectations with an intense feast of female characters.

While Korean films featuring female characters such as'The Samjin Group English TOEIC Class' (Director Jongpil Lee) and'The Day I Die' (Director Jiwan Park) are being released and loved one after another, Netflix movie'Call' is unrivaled. Heralded the birth of a female character.

'Call' (Director Choong-Hyun Lee, Film for Production, provided by Netflix) is a mystery thriller depicting a mad obsession that begins when two women in different time periods connected by a single phone change their fates.

Director Lee Choong-hyun, who said, “I wanted to prove that female characters are genre-wise in Korean movies,” has built up stories with power around Seo-yeon and Young-sook who are trying to change the past and future in their own time. Here, a large number of actors with outstanding character digestibility and personality such as Park Shin-hye, Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Seong-ryeong, and Lee joined together to create an explosive acting synergy and a dense suspense.

First, Park Shin-hye presents a breakthrough transformation into Seo-yeon, who faces a killer in exchange for returning the past. “'Call' will be a film that proves that Park Shin-hye can handle genre films well.” It perfectly expresses the change and takes the center of the play.

In return for awakening Youngsook's madness, Seo-yeon, who became her target, and her venomous appearance, struggling to protect important people from Young-sook, who threatens her past and present, is expected to overwhelm viewers. Jeon Jong-seo, who captivated the Cannes International Film Festival with his debut film'Burning' (2018), breaks down into Young-sook, who knows his terrible future and is runaway, and presents the most powerful female villain character in Korean film history.

Jeon Jong-seo, who introduced Youngsook as "a character that cannot be defined even with modifiers such as psychopaths," exudes the repressed madness and digests the runaway Youngsuk with explosive energy, creating tension throughout the day. Seong-ryeong Kim, who has built up a solid performance by going back and forth between the screen and the CRT, played Seoyeon's mother struggling to protect her daughter. In return for director Lee Chung-hyun's belief that "I thought that only actor Kim Seong-ryeong could play the role of Seo-yeon's mother," Kim Seong-ryeong completed a three-dimensional character by performing delicate emotional acting between his 30s and 50s.

EL, who has captivated the public with her unique mask and personality, takes on the role of a new mother who monitors her daughter Youngsuk's every move and tries to change his fate with a magic ritual. “There is a unique atmosphere that only actor EL has. As director Lee Choong-hyun said, “We designed the expressions and gestures that can replace the lines in detail.” As director Lee Chung-hyun said, the new mother who suppresses Young-sook at once with an expressionless face and restrained expression creates a mysterious atmosphere for each god that appears and adds tension.

'Call', which will provide overwhelming suspense with unpredictable stories as well as unrivaled characters created by the explosive performance of Park Shin-hye, Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Seong-ryeong, and EL, will be released to the world on Netflix only on November 27th.

Smiling Jong-seo Jeon, angry Park Shin-hye... The reason this look is so creepy

The more you know, the more monster-like movie <Call> preview

1.<Ransom> Director Choong-Hyun Lee's work... An unexpected ending notice?
?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2F45c3d5d6bb6a4864990c37f782e7b67b.jpg

<Call> is the first feature film directed by Choong-Hyun Lee, who received attention as a rising star director in Chungmuro with the topical short film <Body Price> in 2015. This film has a history of winning several awards by being invited to six short film festivals, and with the unique method of one cut, the tension-filled elements in the monotonous development, and the shocking ending left a strong impression on those who watched the film. For this reason, as it is a new work released five years after <Body Value>, it is expected that <Call> will inherit the colors and influences of the previous work.

2. Original <The Caller>

?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2F20bde01e5ccd44b3bd0860a1f25708f9.JPG

<Call> is based on the 2011 Puerto Rican movie <The Kohler>. It is a mystery thriller that depicts an incident that occurs when the protagonist who wants to overcome the wounds of the past and settle anew makes a phone call with a strange woman living in a completely different time zone. It is a work that can be downloaded and streamed in Korea. If you are curious about what kind of movie <Call> is, it would be good to look at the original and compare it.

3. Works of the same space and different time zones

The first half of the trailer shows the contrast of two people living in the same space, although they live in different time zones in 1999 and 2019. Through this, the film plans to contain time-distorted scenes caused by time warp as interesting visual elements through the process of changing moment by moment in the same space. It is expected that 1999 will be treated as a red tone image, and 2019 will be treated as a modern visual beauty of blue tone. This passage is a key element of the movie.

4. They got along well at first

?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2Fbd3da274396649eb946422b8403a4185.JPG

The teaser and main trailer show that Seoyeon (Park Shin-hye) and Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo) were very close at the beginning. They live lives in different times of the past and the future, but they bring out a sense of mystery toward each other, which is such a different aspect. However, considering the characteristics of the original work, the symbolism of the medium of the telephone, and the situation of the two, I think that loneliness and desperate desire for communication may have been applied to the background of the two becoming close.

5. Problems with the return of a dead father

?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2F2bec317cd6b6448ca80ae756a806c558.JPG

The incident that led to a direct time distortion phenomenon caused by the relationship between the two who had built up a friendship simply through a phone call. When Young-sook, who learned about Seo-yeon's past and personal story, offers to save Seo-yeon's dead father (Park Seon-ho), the two realize that past actions can directly affect the future. This eventually leads to the aftermath of an unexpected event, and in the end becomes a dangerous factor that can adversely affect.

6. The core of the case: Jeon Jong-seo's future fate and identity
?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2F24555bd76d114c41b843cfbed5275d48.JPG

When Youngsook asks Seoyeon how he is in the future, the next scene shows Seoyeon as if facing Youngsook's grave. Considering that the tombstone marked November 27, 1999 as the date of his death, it is presumed that Youngsuk has reached his end. For this reason, when the first teaser trailer was released, it was expected that Youngsook knew her end and was runaway, but when I saw Youngsook's unstable appearance in the trailer released this time, I think she wasn't the person who could cause problems. do. Eventually, when Youngsook learns the method of time distortion and harass Seo-yeon, an incident occurs.

7. Park Shin-hye suffered unilaterally? Hairstyles and spaces change every minute!

?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2Fdb29858ca099405982ddaad477fd2d15.JPG

The scene where Youngsook's sudden behavior affects Seo-yeon's future life in earnest. The space where Park Shin-hye, who played Seo-yeon, was changed from moment to moment, and at some point it was confirmed that her hairstyle changed. Through this, Youngsook tries to achieve her purpose by controlling the future Seo-yeon.

8. What's wrong with your father? The appearance of a strange space!
?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2Fd1e2b2fd65b6479fbd528adda1a84549.JPG

Young-sook is ruining Seo-yeon's daily life with another unexpected act. The scene in which the appearance of his returning father changes strangely and the strange secret space that suddenly appeared in Seoyeon's house suggests that Youngsook's actions were taken. In addition, she is known as a serial killer, harassing Seo-yeon with her unpredictable behavior, and is enjoying such changes, emphasizing her absolute evil aspect.

?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2Fce1da6a056bd4586a64a9fc626955fce.JPG

As Young-sook's actions adversely affect Seo-yeon, Young-sook is angry and tries to get revenge over the phone, but it is impossible to get revenge on people in the past. Is there any way to control her runaway?

9. Park Shin-hye's character refers to Anya Taylor Joy in <23 Identity>?
Spoiler

?fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fliveboard%2Ffeelthemovie%2F41e86a41c9f344e69ccad38ac85bcaf9.jpg

Director Lee Chung-hyun said in an interview with the media that the Seoyeon character played by Park Shin-hye was completed by referring to Casey played by Anya Taylor Joy in <23 Identity>, and that Park Shin-hye also ordered and referred to such acting. Interestingly, if you consider that the protagonist of the original <The Kohler> suffered from trauma in the past, such as the violence of his ex-husband, Seoyeon from <Call> would be a character who suffered from trauma and injury. Nevertheless, if we consider that Casey and Mary of the original work faced the problem strongly in the midst of difficulties, I think that Seo-yeon would not be pulled unilaterally by Young-sook and face various difficulties in order to somehow take the lead.

An actress who is as dazzling as the sun! The second place is Park Shin Hye (Heirs, Doctors ~ Feelings of love ~ etc.)!

Second place is Park Shin Hye, who turned 30 in 2020! You're Beautiful, you're beautiful, and you've appeared in famous dramas in Japan, so you're one of the most well-known Korean actresses. Her charm is her big eyes, which tend to be black, and a smile that is as dazzling as the sun! It's a vitamin-like actress who can get energized just by looking at it. Recently, Park Shin Hye is working hard to shoot the new drama "Sisyphus: the myth"! The broadcast date is undecided, but I can't wait to see her new success!
