Jang Dong-gun and Jeon Ji-hyun, most popular actors for 2nd half of 2007

Jang Dong-gun and Jeon Ji-hyun have been selected as the most popular male and female actors for the 2nd half of 2007. The most popular in singer section are Rain and Lee Hyo-ri while Yoo Jae-suk and Shin Bong-sun are the most popular in the comedian section.

Marketing research firm Lee’s PR & Research Ltd announced the result of entertainer popularity survey that was conducted on 1,319 people aged 13 to 65 in 5 big cities nationwide from 25 to 31 August 2007.

In the male actor section, Jang Dong-gun defended his No 1 position which he has held since 2nd half of 2005 with 20.4% ( Translator’s Note: should be 1st half of 2005). Gong Yoo of MBC drama “Coffee Prince” took the 2nd place with 13.6%, No 3 is Jo In-sung (8.6%). Others in the top ten include Choi Soo-jong, Kwan Sang-woo, Ahn Sung-ki, Jong Il-woo, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Jun-ki and Bae Yong-joon.

In the female actor section, Jeon Ji-hyun rose to No. 1 with 9.3% from No.6 in the 1st half of the year. Lee Young-ae maintained her No.2 position with 9.1%. Yoon Eun-hye who became very popular through drama “Coffee Prince” rose to 3rd place with 8.8%. She was followed by Kim Tae-hee, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Hye-soo, Han Ga-in, Ha Hee-ra, Kim Ah-jung and Song Hye-kyo.

In the male singer section, Rain with 22.8% support votes took No.1 position for the 5th consecutive time. SG Wannabe (9.1%) the only ballad singer in top 10 took the 2nd place. They were followed by Tae Jina, Sol Woon-do and Super Junior.

For the female singers, Lee Hyo-ri (17.7%) defended her 1st position since 2nd half of 2006. She was followed by Ivy (13.6%), Chae Yeon (11.6%), BoA and Jang Yoon-jung.

In the male comedian section, Yoo Jae-suk enjoyed overwhelming popularity with 40.4%, while Kang Ho-dong (13.4%) and Park Myung-soo (8.5%) held 2nd and 3rd places. They were followed by Shin Dong-yub and Jung Hyung-don who made half of 6 MCs in MBC ‘Infinite Challenge’ included in top 5 list.

For female comedians, Shin Bong-sun who held 8th place at first half of 2007 rose to 1st place with 20.9%, Jo Hye-run (17.1%) and Kang Yoo-mi (14.5%) took 2nd and 3rd places. They were followed by Kim Mi-hwa and Jung Sun-hee.

For sportsman and sportswoman sections, Park Ji-sung and Pak Se-ri were selected as the most popular. Park Ji-sung with 32.1% support votes cleared away Lee Seung-yub (18.7%) and Park Tae-hwan (14.7%). Pak Se-ri with 40.9% beat Kim Yun-a (31.2%) who was No. 1 at 1st half of 2007. Michelle Wie took the 3rd place.

Actresses Gain Presence Onscreen

While the female persona Korean entertainment remains largely reminiscent of Hollywood during the 1950~60s, a few in recently released or upcoming films are beginning to reflect, with some realism, Korean women today.

Women onscreen tend to be either innocent asexual Audrey Hepburns (think Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, Song Hye-kyo) or smoldering Marylin Monroes oozing with sex appeal (Kim Hye-soo, Uhm Jung-hwa). Then there exists a third, very minor group of eccentrics like Katherine Hepburn that fit into neither category, like actresses Kang Hae-jeong, Bae Doo-na and Kong Hyo-jin.

In other words, it is rather difficult to meet truly realistic female characters in movies. A most disappointing example is director Kwak Kyoung-taek's latest offering "A Love." In this terribly old-fashioned story about a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, the heroine is but a mere caricature embodying romantic fantasies: the unforgettable first love, frail damsel in distress and untainted prostitute. She is but a superficial plot element that gives the male protagonist a story to tell.

Roles for sexual or even remotely sexually active women continue to be reserved for the more "mature" actresses. They tend to be over 30 and/or married. Sex icon Kim Hye-soo, for example, plays a string of femme fatale roles from "Hypnotized" (2004) to "Tazza: The High Rollers" (2005) and "A Day for an Affair" (2006).

Upcoming sex comedy "Lovers Behind" features two very different but equally sexy women. The film delightfully resembles "Sex and the City," with two women speaking frankly about love and sex. Lee Mi-youn, the Nicole Kidman of Korea enjoying a newfound peak in her career following her divorce from actor Kim Seung-woo, plays the role of a photographer who wants romances with no strings attached. Lee Tae-ran, who enjoys steady popularity in her acting career, depicts a woman who marries one man after another to enjoy a lavish lifestyle. While these female characters provide much humor, they are over-sexualized in a sense that their sexuality is the only thing that defines them. The film will be released mid-October.

Another recent film, however, brings to screen a fresh new female persona. In Hur Jin-ho's "Happiness," now playing in theaters, Lim Soo-jung's petite, slim and dewy-eyed character Eun-hi is at first glance another Audrey Hepburn. But Eun-hi is far from passive in her romantic relationship with Yeong-su (Hwang Jung-min), and does not hesitate to initiate sex _ without being a seductive temptress _ or propose to move in together.

"I wanted to show that when a woman is in love with a man, she too can be assertive," said director Hur during a press conference at a Seoul theater last month. For the baby-faced actress, this is a dramatic departure from her girlish roles as a high-school girl in "..ing" (2003) or the fairytale-like character in "I am a Cyborg but That's OK" (2006). She has finally grown up enough to play parts closer to her actual age.

Likewise, superstar Kim Tae-hee matures onscreen opposite award-winning actor Sul Kyoung-gu in "Ssaum (Fight)" coming to theaters December. The movie humorously portrays a couple who, once madly in love, are now fiercely battling each other. Kim casts off her sweet, angelic allure to personify an irritable woman who does not refrain from resorting to physical violence while arguing with her husband.

The fighting spirit in women does not stop with Kim Tae-hee. Audiences can look forward to Do Ji-won in her role in "Punch Lady." Do plays a submissive housewife who one day decides not to put up with her abusive husband any longer. She begins training hard to master the art of fighting after publicly announcing a duel on the ring with her pro-wrestler husband.

Although this is a rather comical theatrical situation, it reflects how women in Korean cinema are beginning to show a bit of dimension and color. "Punch Lady" is due for release at the end of the month.

이 여자들을 영화로 만든다면 누가 제격일까? 우아하거나 순수한 미모의 여배우에게는 맞지 않아 보이는 이들 캐릭터에 도전한 이들이 있으니, 바로 전지현 손예진 김태희다.

전지현은 영화 <슈퍼맨이었던 사나이>(감독 정윤철ㆍ제작 CJ엔터테인먼트)에서 송수정으로,손예진은 영화 <무방비도시>(감독 이상기ㆍ제작 ㈜쌈지 아이비젼영상사업단)에서 백장미로 변신했다. 김태희는 영화 <싸움>(감독 한지승ㆍ제작 시네마서비스)에 출연한다.

전지현은 <슈퍼맨이었던 사나이>에서 외주 프로덕션 PD로 거친 제작의 세계에서 살아 남기 위해 애쓰는 여자로 연기 변신에 도전한다. 전지현은 밤낮 없는 제작 현장에서 스트레스를 받는 억척 여성으로 술과 담배를 하는 모습을 보여준다.

전지현은 슈퍼맨이라고 믿는 사나이 황정민을 이용해 다큐멘터리를 찍고 히트를 치자 무리를 해서 프로그램을 만들다 진정성을 고민하는 역을 맡았다. 그동안 CF에서 전지현이 보여줬듯 아름다운 외모를 유지하면서 일도 척척 해 내는 알파걸과는 거리가 있다.

CJ엔터테인먼트측은 “외향적이지만 여성적인, 그리고 가끔 덜렁대기도 하는 모습은 전지현의 기존 이미지와 맞닿아 있다. 다만 프로덕션 PD라는 직업의 특성상 다소 거친 모습이 보일 수는 있다”고 밝혔다.

손예진은 현재 절반 정도 진행한 <무방비도시>에서 소매치기 보스로 출연했다. 손예진은 그동안 영화 <내 머릿 속의 지우개>,드라마 <연애시대>에서 보여준 사랑스럽고 연약한 이미지와 정반대의 터프한 악당으로 변신했다.

포스터 촬영까지 마친 <무방비도시>에서 손예진은 스모키 화장으로 섹시한 카리스마를 한껏 발산하고 있다. <무방비도시>측은 “손예진은 액션까지 포함된 소매치기 보스 역을 상당히 성공적으로 소화해내고 있다. 만족스럽다”고 밝혔다.

김태희의 변신 또한 주목된다. 김태희는 영화 <싸움>에서 설경구와 사이가 좋지 않은 부부로 출연한다. 크랭크업을 앞두고 있는 <싸움>에서 김태희는 설경구와 육탄전을 불사하며 영화 <미스터 앤 미세스 스미스> 못지 않은, 전쟁 같은 부부싸움을 실제처럼 소화해냈다.

<싸움>측은 “그동안 김태희와 상당히 다른 모습을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 설경구와 호흡이 잘 맞아 자신의 역할을 100% 해냈다”고 밝혔다.

내년초 개봉할 이들 영화의 대결에서 어떤 배우의 모습이 가장 강렬할지 벌써부터 주목된다.
