If Chinese organizers follow international practices, they will pay for the airline tickets & hotel bill too. (This is where commercial sponsorship comes in.)

China loves these ensemble concerts, where different signature songs are performed live. You can make a decent living out of it for years, like Singaporeans Mavis Hee ('90s pop star) & A-Do (one-hit wonder).

The occasion is the Seoul press ops for the G20 concert 2010 Asia Song Festival.

She's the top C-Pop female singer in China, & has performed on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

It's also a TVDaily article, so maybe sister portal Korea Star Daily will re-publish a Chinese version.

Shangdu  Sports News 2010-10-22 Beijing time. The 8th Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Festival Opening Ceremony proceeded as scheduled at the Henan Provincial Sports Center.

The cultural event brought together many well-known domestic singers, but it was the fly-in of  WONDERGIRLS which really surprised many viewers. WONDERGIRLS had  successfully broken out of Korea with 'Nobody' to launch their own Korean Wave. With their might, WONDERGIRLS then triumphantly cracked the  American market as well. These good achievements made them one of the best-known exports among the many Kpop groups. It is worth mentioning  that this is WONDERGIRLS's first trip to Zhengzhou. WONDERGIRLS greeted the Zhengzhou audience in precise Chinese, their pronunciation truly startling. For this event, WONDERGIRLS not only performed the Nobody Chinese version, but also their new 2DT Chinese version.

This year's opening ceremony & large-scale cultural evening gala featured a huge lineup of cast & crew. The stars were resplendent: Tan Jing, Wakin Chau, F.I.R., Wang Feng, Stefanie Sun, Yang Kun, WONDERGIRLS & other superstars went onstage in succession. In addition to their splendid performances, what they did backstage was also eye-catching. Reporters Li Xue, Xue Lu, Liu Tao/text; Wen Changliang, Jia Junsheng/photos.

[summary of middle portion, which narrated the encounters with certain performers:

- Tan Jing was fighting a cold, but vowed to sing well. She confessed her exposure to gongfu was via a Hua Mulan opera ("more style than substance') & nothing like Shaolin's. She was impressed with Zhengzhou, the stadium, etc. then excused herself to go onstage.

- Wang Feng was very professional, inquiring about microphone type & instructing the soundman on music keys & pitch. He was also very low-profile, accompanied by just 2 others & finishing his rehearsal in 10 minutes. Before leaving, he casually autographed a fan's shirt rather than the offered book.

- F.I.R. had arrived in Zhengzhou early, but went to explore Shaolin Temple instead. They know some martial arts ("taekwondo stuff"), but wanted to see if the mythical '18 Bronzemen' & Wing Chun are for real. Jay Chou's 'Nunchucks' (meshing gongfu & pop music) was a huge Mandopop hit; they mused about recording something similar with rock music.]

Hailing from Korea, WONDERGIRLS of 'Nobody' fame in Asia had set off a mimicry mania in China. But they said it was their first time participating in a Shaolin Wushu Festival.

When the 5 girls arrived for interviews, Wang Feng was still onstage, warbling away in falsetto. After being directed by their manager, they quietly sat down one by one along the front-row eats, just like students, & waited out the dress rehearsal.

Only the staff personnel were hanging around. There were no fans cheering for them. As the warm afternoon sun shone on their bodies, they seemed to be enjoying this feeling.

They sat quietly next to one another, neither whispering among themselves nor talking to the staff. No makeup, in casual clothes, their heads bowed over their cellphones as they typed out SMS text messages.

After a while, some male staff walked up & gestured for autographs. The girls smiled &, after signing, each of them passed down the line to the others. Very courteous.

This reporter walked up & tried to make small talk, wanting to attest a great affection for them & for 'Nobody'. But despite much gesticulations, they all looked puzzled, shaking their heads & smiling.

It became an awkward scene: Reporter laughed, they laughed too, neither side knew what it was about.

This reporter immediately thought: Why did I not learn a few lines from watching the Korean TV dramas? The idols are in front of me, yet we cannot communicate verbally. They become strangers, despite the familiarity. (Please continue reading page A06*)

Wow, the article titles such as.... 

Well, this is my opinion. It is just me or the reporter or whoever wrote the article need some mode, history of writing skills or more reporter training class. What kind of marital art did they expect from the guest artist that just hailing from Korea about half day only. It is not fair to compared WG with their local performers or local artists who for sure that getting much of a chance to practice/rehearsal when the stage is being set. Umm... Yet another local biased in the local media, I think xD 

Still appreciate the article though. Thanks for letting us know about the girls when the fancam and information seems like very limited.

  ^ The headline is tongue-in-check. That's what copy-editors do: conjure up snappy one-liners.

The reporter also has to write with martial arts as a theme cuz it is a government-backed Shaolin event, after all. Not a pop concert per se.

To preempt further misunderstandings, let me clarify that there is no negativity about any of the artistes.

The Zhengzhou newspaper's morning edition is also appearing online. No WG stuff so far, but the process is not done yet.

Hearing 'Nobody' playing onstage, she did the hand moves & imitated the MV dance for her entourage.

She rehearsed well & was polite. At this point, the mass-group performers turned up & some started to cheer her on. They jostled for autographs after she finished. Her bodyguards stepped forward & whisked her away. The fans were disappointed but understanding.

- Wakin Chau arrived 10 minutes before his set & quickly got ready. The dark backstage was lit up by cellphones & cameras from fellow performers taking photos with him. The reporters did not disturb him out of respect &, as affable as ever, he voluntarily signed their notebooks as a token of appreciation. Post-performance, everybody surrounded him again before the staff escorted him away.

- Yang Kun said he was taken with the changes in Zhengzhou with every visit. Asked about writing gongfu-themed music, he pointed out such songs are usually more about a sporting spirit (faith, spiritual, positivity, inspirational). He is also open to filming gongfu films, & plugged his Dec 3 concert.]

Too bad Stefanie Sun didn't get to meet Sunye. Their younger selves look very much like each other: pixie-faced & beaming smiles.

Read a fanaccount of meeting WG earlier this morning.

The girls (& Stefanie Sun) were staying at the Yuda Palace Hotel 裕达国贸酒店.

They had retired for the night she went there to stalk after the concert, so she returned again at 4 in the morning (too tired to sleep).

Stefanie's fans also turned up soon after. The songstress checked out at 7-plus. Not that many people around since it was dawn.

WG checked out at 8-plus, for their 10am flight. (Yoobin tweeted later they reached Seoul around 3pm Beijing time.)

SunLim came down together, then Yeeun alone, then SoBin. The girls (& the staff) apparently took different cars to the airport.

The WF said she had assumed they would head out for supper post-concert. But the hotel staff told her they did go to Zhengzhou East on Oct 21 (i.e. the night they flew in, wow, must have been 1-2am).

The rest of the account is about dodging the JYP staff to get all 5 autographs.
