and to think it was such a most anticipated concert date! i remember watching it the first time. i was in love with taek but i thought JH was the husband. i was expecting something to happen on JH x DS loveline but nothing happened. i wanted to shake JH for not offering to piggyback her. instead, he was nagging her lol! but did you notice DS did not seem to mind the nagging? it seems it did not natter to DS if nothing sweet happened.
i remember a post asking where DS was when the neighborhood freaked out about the plane crash. actually, she went out right after dinner to see ji hyun. i think the pd did not include her on this scene to avoid confirming how important taek is to DS. i imagine she would be freaking out as much as taek's dad was.
i remember in R94, a shopping center where CB was supposed to be had collapsed. najung worried so much about him that when she saw CB she was crying her heart out while embracing him.

i would like to believe she has always loved taek above the others. but since she was so focused on the romantic love described in her romantic novels, she failed to understand the kind of love she felt for taek. not to mention her insecurities. she wanted the type of love she read in novels, i don't fault her for this because she was still young. im sure most of us went through the same stage when we were younger. DS, no matter her understanding was somehow delayed, is one lucky girl. she is loved by the first and only man she ever truly loved. for her, it has always been taek, the same way she is the only one for taek.based on my reply experience, reply writer seems to write a story of a love that is deeply rooted. a love that is founded in childhood and is affirmed thru the years. this is the common formula in all of the 3 reply series. i should have known after episode 2 that taek was the husband lol! but since the reply pd and team are also masters of trolls, they confused me and the other viewers along the way.
by the way, what's the episode for the next rewatch? epi 12 or 13? since i cant be sure if i can be around during the scheduled time, i plan to watch when i can find the time.

imo, taek x ds shippers were the minority in the drama thread and some of them had wavered lots of times. the opposition was just too strong. i found it funny while reading those posts saying they were waiting for a jh x ds momentous moment. i guess they were expecting ds to finally go to jh and just probably tell him, "hey i like you!" but they missed the one important thing the drama has been telling the viewers - she would only fall in love with him if he confessed first. thus, asking him if he was ok with the blind date, asking him to go to the concert with her, looking at his reaction while she was talking to that guy who got a crush on her, faking a foot injury. after all this, she continued being unladylike around him and taek was still the number one person on her mind. and ive always wondered how easy it was for her to give up when the pink shirt happened. to think the drama showed us DS crying over SW. i believe this was for the viewers to look back and compare with her reaction with JH pink shirt.
i always had this thought though, what if jh confessed? i guess they would date but DS would always take care of taek as she felt she was closest to him and knew everything about him because that's what the drama had established from the start. while jh would always say things that would hurt DS, without his intention because he was just being himself. and he would do lovely things DS wouldn't understand because this is also how he is. could i really imagine DS in this kind of relationship? i guess so if this was not a reply installment. and Taek would have to leave the gang because his character would ask that of him. To be consistent with the drama's narrative that without DS, taek felt he would be lost.
but wait, JH did confess! but by the time he did, DS has already understand what it means to love and be in love. She already knew who she likes from the start. they said she began to like taek because he kissed her first but actually, this was not the case. she saw taek getting relieved when she pretended not to know about the kiss, that it was just a dream. so in her mind, he didn't like her. even during JH confession in epi 18, she did not exactly know taek's feelings. if she was just a receiver of emotions, she would have received his confession. but she did not. so i guess this was why JH took it back as a joke to avoid the rejection that would have affected their friendship. this is in parallel to JH x Taek scene in sacheon. we all knew why taek had visited him that day but when JH started talking how it was ok, he told him it was not the reason he came. this was to keep their friendship the same way it was.
It has always been taek from the start. the way child DS reached out to him and gave him the fish candy. the way DS decided to piggy back him. one of the boys could have done it but DS always went those extra miles for Taek. these miles had been reiterated so many times on this thread. but DS was too young to realize why she felt this way towards taek and to define such feelings. taek was the first to actually understand his feelings for her. i think this was why adult taek was surprised when he knew ds thought he only liked her in 89.

He he.. You know your point abt CT is bang on.. and one thing that doesn't get mentioned is how he allows everyone to be..just as what they are.. The fact that he slides in a position where he appears to be the weaker one.. says a lot abt his maturity..because a truly confident person, alone, can do that..
Even as a viewer, there are so many instances that bring out the shock..because one moment we are told to see him in one way and the other moment he emerges in the contrary way..
THey introduce him as bumpkin apart from being genius at playing baduk..and someone made a comment on his low IQ in the beginning episode. And we revisit this same point in middle of the series..to show that he is indeed a genius at everything - maths, baduk, anythign..and has a ver very high IQ..infact highest from the looks of how they told bOra about it on the beach...
However, are you referring to me as the viewer who needs to watch the series again? - lol..then you are mistaken
im referring to viewers who only see taek's character as weak, babyish, and not a man.

im just concerned because i read all the posts in the drama thread, before i moved on to this thread. not sure if i could still manage to read jhxds thread but i do want to try. what a life!
my husband had already told me to get a grip. he witnessed my breakdown over chilbong lol! anyways, in the drama thread, i just observed that most of the disgruntled viewers were those who focused on jh scenes and/or skipped taek's scenes and/or those who, unfortunately, stopped watching after jh's confession or even before that.

on motherly love, i am happily married and there are times when my husband becomes my eldest child lol! and yeah to be fair, there are many instances i am also like his child. that's the kind of love that is deeply rooted and i hope will last till we're both too old to hug or kiss or you know... lol!
so you should be happy if your crush is motherly or fatherly to you. seriously. and run, if he's making you feel bad about yourself.
because of these views, R88 has become my most favorite drama. it's the most real story ever in kdramaland. and DSxTK is my ideal OTP. I dont know if i can consider myself a shipper but since this OTP is my favorite, I hang out on this thread because i want to know more about them.

SHe always eats like that....and we have seen that there is no reason to suggest she doesn't do so in front of CT - china (hogging), they are always eating in taek's house...come to think of it..i haven't seen her eat normally anywhere except for 24 yr old DS

anyways, after rewatching the full series twice, i do realize that DS had never been in love with JH. the reply people are masters of trolls so most viewers always end up imposing their fluttered hearts on their favored character. this happened to me in reply 1994 so in 1988, i avoided all analysis until i finished my second watch.
Taek is the most mature among all the four boys. He understands clearly the world of adults - a single father's need of companionship, a mother's worry towards her sick child, a grieving son who just lost a mother, etc. and these have been clearly shown in the series.
if a viewer can't see this, perhaps a rewatch is a must.

Also all appointments was up to 5 pm. While it was raining Trash meet NJ, Bora arrived to restaurant, the movie about to start and Taek washing his face so it was still way too early and by the time JH driving there JB waiting for Mi Ok and Deok Sun waiting for her friend it was sunny again ^^
i remember it was raining before the movie started and it was the kind of rain with the sun still up. that's why dongryong said, a tiger must be getting married. usually this kind of rain would stop after a while and come back later in the day or in the evening. i remember hearing this during one of my ecology classes.
when Taek's manager and gf were discussing about DS concert date, it was still raining outside. I also believed that Taek was on his way out when he passed them by at the hallway. Meaning, he left for the concert earlier than jh because when jh was driving through the traffic, the rain had stopped. I imagined taek rushed to the concert venue, maybe got lost along the way and for sure he took time to park his car. i would have wanted to see his parked car though lol. he was really out of breath when he arrived, i could just imagine what he went through. but he got there first! we saw how jh rushed through the traffic but then in the end, taek beat him to the finish line.
and also, we could see jb kept looking up at the sound of the bell/ring while he was waiting for his date. this mirrored exactly how DS would look to the door everytime it ringed when she was in the restaurant with the 3 boys. during jh's confession. whether jh took back or not his confession, it did not matter because DS was waiting for taek, the same way jb waited for mi-ok.
guys, this is really a major issue for me right now. i can't move on from this drama. lee seung hwan's empty heart kept ringing in my ears, with an intermission from byun ji seob lol!

That whole scene in the room where they're making fun of TK for his bad dating skills and the song after is surprisingly high on my list of favorites. Maybe it's the brooding look that PBG pulls off so well as Taek.

and it was my personal opinion that from the very start, pbg knew taek was the husband, rjy knew JH would lose the girl, and hyeri knew DS would be marrying the baduk genius. the production gave good excuses why they couldn't know but business-wise and career-wise, the actors and their agencies should know. agencies often go the extra mile and screen interview questions and shows being offered to their artists because they have to maintain certain public images for them. can i actually believe they will accept to do a project without considering possible scenarios and consequences?
they said actors didn't know so they wouldn't get swayed or they would not pre-empt their acting. but hey, they are professional actors who went a thorough selection process. im sure they have always known what to do and how to do it well.
i guess saying that you don't know your character's endgame is part of the contractual obligation, which is really fine and understandable.

exactly! it was enough that she liked him. she was happy doing things for him. other viewers always highlighted that DS only saw taek as a friend who was like a younger brother to her. that was why they could not get the connection of her being in love with him. i would have accepted their argument if it wasn't one-sided or "double-standard."
because you see, DS, in spite of those swoony moments she had with JH, seemed to be not affected with it all. when they were trapped between those walls, she slept soundly that night while jh couldn't sleep. then the next morning, we could see DS unabashedly back hugging JH to avoid her mom's rage over the lost camera. if she felt something, it would have been awkward for her. the cake-eating contest with JB right after the night JH told her not to go on the blind date was really funny i felt bad for JH. the first time i watched these scenes i knew DS was not in love though i was really expecting she would someday feel something deeper because i thought JH was the husband. and i was sure she also liked JH as a friend because when she was told he liked her, she readily liked the idea. bickering moments aside, there were also instances that they were nice to each other. but then, all along, it was JH whom she liked as a friend. she bickered with him the way she bickered with bora. ultimately, it was JH whom she had always treated as a sibling.

Hi everyone! Someone mentioned this thread to me. Hi there and thank you very much for inviting me over! Now, I can talk more about Taek LOL! Though you may have already discussed what im going to say.
I am a bit sad that I was quite late for the party. I watched reply 1988 while still mending my broken heart over chilbong lol! I just mustered up the courage to watch R88 and avoided all threads to avoid another heartache. I really admire the PD, writer, and the entire production of Reply series so I still found myself looking forward to this new reply installment, in spite of the pending tears and disappointment. I just have to keep in mind that it’s their story to tell, not mine.
I just finished reading the drama thread and oh boy, there were so many JH-DS shippers over there. It’s not easy keeping the faith when the world seems to be against you. I guess, the PD was right. The media (and most people), I presumed this include the public and the fans, only remember “Come home earlier” that was said by JH in the drama. In a way, he was right. Viewers had already formed conclusions on how the story would end and they had already set their mind on a JH-DS endgame.
SpoilerBecause I avoided getting trolled, I rooted for Junghwan right from the moment it was revealed that SW was in love with Bora. It was a convenient choice. Junghwan is a good guy and he likes DS and DS seemed to like him too. Many shippers rooted for him so I might as well go with the majority. And RJY’s name was written right after Hyeri in AsiaWiki LOL! This was the biggest troll of all! And who else was there anyway? Though I really loved Taek, there was not really much development on TK-DS loveline on the first half of the drama. Though I found the JH-DS scenes heart-fluttering, I still found some of them tedious and ordinary, especially the bickering. I got too much of it from R94 and from other dramas. Surprisingly, I felt a stronger tug in my heart during the China scenes, especially that close-up shot of Taek when he realized that it was DS who prepared everything for him. I swooned more when I watched them playing together at the beach and when he declared he liked DS as a woman. My heart would break a little bit each time I saw Taek looking at DS longingly. Because I thought he was not the husband. I really did not read any analysis on the husband hunt or paid particular attention on the 2015 husband. I could say my R94 experience had taught me well. So I watched the drama as a whole and just let the story take its course.
Why taek is my most favorite among the four male leads? Simply because, I got to understand him as a person. I don’t know if it was intended by the production staff but if you remove the focus from the husband hunt, I believe the most well-developed and well-known character was taek. We basically know him inside and out. Though he got less screen time on the first few episodes, he was the most talked about character in the neighborhood and even among DS’ friends. People kept talking about Junghwan’s POV when in fact, there was never any scene he was asked why he liked DS and how much. Unlike Taek. DR had asked Taek what he saw in DS. He even told him to reconsider. Because of the scenes with DR and SW, we knew that Taek liked DS for who she was and that, his life would be empty without her.
Indeed, rooting for Junghwan was frustrating. When I read the drama thread, I wondered how the JH-DS shippers managed to hold on to him until the end. Seriously, I wanted to know how. Because I gave up on him when he refused to give his jacket to DS that second time and I would seriously had a mental breakdown if, in spite of his hesitations, he would end up with the girl. It was like R94 all over again. If you love someone, you have to put yourself out there. You have to take the risk and forget about your pride. This is how I understood DS’ narratives that before creating misunderstanding that will last a lifetime, you have to tell the ones you love that you love them. This is the reason I could not root for Trash-Najung endgame in R94 and by the time Trash opened himself and admitted that he needed Najung too, it was too late. Chilbong had won me over, hands down and my heart in pieces LOL. And I could feel this was happening to me again because Taek was starting to win me over just by being honest and sincere with his feelings for DS. Thank goodness, the loveline was only 10% of the entire drama. It was not really hard focusing on the friendship and family dynamics because we saw around 90% of it on each episode. I was really oblivious to the ongoing shipping wars during and after the drama ended, which I guess was worse than in R94 season.Though I thought JH was the husband, I did have some doubts. One thing that bothered me was that, the childhood flashback was focused on Taek. I once asked myself why DS did not talk about JH when she talked about their childhood, when he should have been the husband. But I just thought maybe this was just to troll the viewers. Then from the first half of the drama, we found out that the husband smokes almost at the same time we saw Taek having a smoke during the China competition. But still, I dismissed this as red herring. Maybe JH would develop the habit because even unhealthy people succumbed to smoking at one point. In the future scenes, it was highlighted that the husband was not wearing warm clothing and kept using his left hand. Even during the first half, we already saw scenes of Taek not wearing socks and wearing thin clothes which were brought to our attention by DS herself. Sure, JH might have done the same but it was never highlighted to the audience. These clues pointed to Taek as the husband but what could I do? After getting trolled in R94, I really didn’t want to get through it again. So I just dismissed these as decoys and trolling devices. Later I realized that those clues were not really clues but the actual truth. Those clues were not trolls! Gosh, reply is indeed the master of trolls. They still ended up trolling me, actually. I was being trolled that I was trolled! It’s funny because I read in the drama thread that the present husband looked like JH (some comments in other sites even asked for an explanation on the hairstyle LOL) but they should not have given it much thought because seriously, the 2015 DS doesn't even look close to the younger DS. The PD and writer were not trolling the viewers and they are right when they said, the husband aspect was straightforward this time around. If only they kept PBG’s name beside Hyeri in AsiaWiki LOL! And the hairstyle was to hide the scar. Wow! Aren’t they brilliant?
Going back to Taek, as I’ve said, he is the kind of man I hope my son would grow up into. And if I had a daughter, I would want her to meet and fall in love with his kind. Taek may appear childlike and helpless but in episode 6, when he was in China for the competition where he needed to win 5 matches, he appeared most cool and mature, especially when he was walking alone down that alley (not sure what to call that area). It came right after his scene with Dongryong fixing the Walkman and his clothes for him. The viewers thought he was just a helpless and immature person but then, I remember DS narrative that this adult-like child had learned to acclimate himself to the world of adults, which I think was pretty mature of Taek. And that, even if he had adjusted himself well in the adult world, he’s still a child deep inside who missed his mom everyday. Just see how lovable Taek’s character is. Then we saw Taek entering their dark house, looking at the photo of only him and his dad and how sad it was to realize that it’s his birthday and no one was waiting for him, but surprise! His friends prepared a birthday party for him. Then cue to the first childhood flashback where we learned how Taek became part of the gang and how quiet he was as a kid and in spite of that, he still stayed with them and always went along with their crazy antics, with his expressionless face! After my rewatch, I realized that from this point, I should have started thinking that Taek could be the husband LOL. Come to think of it, DS narratives, if not centered on herself and her family, it was centered on Taek. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I think that the only time her narrative was not about her family or Taek, it was about Sunwoo as her first love, with that silly laugh at the end. We did not get much POV from Taek, but we did get a lot of information about him from his wife. And in episode 7, she narrated, “Before it’s too late, overcome your embarrassment and confess. To you, the one I love.” And camera focus on Taek. This should have been my personal epiphany of who the husband was LOL but I was too scared and maybe too cynical to believe in any meta or epiphany in R88.
How I started falling for Taek more than Junghwan? As I watched the drama episode by episode, it was just so natural for me. I literally felt like I was choosing between two good suitors. I like Junghwan because he is really a nice character too. I believed he was the most likely husband just because he was the convenient choice and the type of character that makes a viewer’s heart flutter. But it was hard ignoring Taek. Little by little, he won me over with just being sweet and nice and sincere. He has always made DS feel good about herself. Being nice to her, even though she kept being silly and messy. He found her cute even though she was not being cute LOL. And the things he did for her, without embarrassing her, just made me hope he would get the girl this time. I never heard Taek telling DS she was ugly. When she placed the stone on the center of the baduk board, he did not tell her she’s dumb. Just imagine if it was Junghwan. If someone says I am ugly or dumb, does my heart supposed to flutter? Should I consider those words sweet? Really, it’s sad.
I think some people had been concentrating on JH POV that they missed to see DS POV on the entire loveline. I realized this on my second watch that we got to see lots of swoony moments with JH but actually, DS did not swoon along with the audience. She wanted Taek to be his manito because maybe, she knew he could afford to buy her anything but JH had money too. When they were trapped within the walls, DS slept soundly right after. During those bus scenes, DS was busy crushing on Sun Woo. After reading a post on this, I also realized that on the morning of the night JH told her not to go on a blind date, she was shoving huge slices of cakes on her mouth in front of JH LOL. She was definitely not in love. I agree that what she felt for JH was brought about by what her friends had told her, that JH liked her. JH became a convenient choice for her. Same with Sunwoo. It was not about her liking someone. She actually wanted someone to like her. I do think JH would have stood a chance with her if he showed her his feelings, if he was nice to her. The problem with JH-DS loveline was that DS was not made aware of JH feelings. She never knew and she never even felt it. Her friends told her but how could she trust them when they were mistaken about Sunwoo? Plus the fact that JH was showing exactly the opposite of what he felt. This was why JH never stood a chance.
I wholeheartedly believe that Taek always had a special place in DS heart. She worried about him, she “mothered” him. Some say this was not romantic but well, in the real world, women take extra good care of their loved ones, whether it’s a parent, a husband, a boyfriend, a child, a sibling. It’s human nature to pamper the one closest to our heart. DS realized that Taek was not the baby they thought he was when she went with him in China. She totally saw a different side of Taek. I am not sure if she was falling for him at this moment. I think seeing him like that was overwhelming for her. But this what made Taek more special to her. She saw a side of Taek the others just imagined about and because of this, she understood him better. Maybe she was yet too naïve to realize that you were supposed to be closest to the person you like. She friendzoned herself around Taek because she never imagined him liking her as a woman. Taek was a baduk genius, considered as Stone Buddha in Korea, very popular among girls, while she thought she was just a plain and ordinary girl, even struggling to pass high school and barely able to go to a university. When Taek told her he had someone he liked, she was taken aback and it never occurred to her it was her. When their friends teased them after the beach scene, she told them they were crazy and there was shyness on her voice. But when her girlfriends told her SW/JH liked her, she began chasing on the boys right away. She crushed on the two boys without thinking so much on the possibilities.I think one of the most concrete clues to DS feelings towards Taek was when Taek cancelled their movie date, she was not able to sleep. She kept wondering about it and her emotions were plainly shown to the viewers through her monologue at the study room. With the pink shirt debacle, we were not shown she suffered a sleepless night over it. She just moved on. When the husband was confirmed, I felt like I have won something. Finally, the nice and straightforward guy has gotten the girl! LOL but really, I just felt happy because I really believed with all my heart that DS and Taek would be happy together. Theirs was a love story that is closest to the real thing. The emotions I felt when I realized why she lied about the dream-like kiss was so intense. She lied because she could not bear it if they became awkward because she truly loved him. If they became awkward she might lose him and even his friendship, and she could not bear it, in a way mirroring Taek’s confession that long ago night. Thus, making us see in that few words and powerful scene that her feelings for Taek was deeper and more serious than what she ever felt for SW/JH. Gosh, I was tearing up watching this scene. The PD had a reason for every scene and action, it’s really amazing when you finally able to put together all the pieces. So saying that there was a script change is unfair to the production team and just ridiculous. Some argued that they did not understand DS, the sudden shift from liking JH to liking Taek but they did not see any problem with DS liking Sunwoo (even to the point of making a confession on a radio program), then suddenly started liking JH. Looking back, I think DS’s crush on Sunwoo was deeper than what she felt towards JH. At least with Sunwoo, we had seen them talking pleasantly together. With JH, they were always arguing or we saw JH always telling her to wise up. Those could have been love sparks if we were watching an ordinary rom-com kdrama. But we’re not.
So yes, Taek was the husband, right from the start. I have realized this more when I watched the drama for the second time. I know it’s painful for some but the drama is really worth a rewatch, that is, if you want to understand it more. I would like to believe that after R94, I have become a more mature viewer. And when it’s a reply installment, you just have to have an open mind and just let the PD and writer tell the story.Ps. Sorry for a very long post. Off to backread this thread.

Why was empress ki excluded? It's a great drama and all the actors really did well.
Kim soo hyun and ha ji won really look good together, considering the age gap. As much as I wanted her to make a drama with ksh, i would be happier to hear about her dating status and wedding plans. If I understand correctly, ji chang wook wished her to have a special someone and have a happy marriage.
Im so overwhelmed with all good things being said about ha ji won. From early days of her career until today, she still has the image of a very bright and positive personality.
On song seung hyun, it would be nice to see him with ha ji won in a drama or movie. He's the first korean actor I liked.

With all due respect and in fairness to all celebrities out there, their dating status or history, should not define who they are as persons. Break-ups happen all the time. Getting dumped for someone else can happen to anyone. These celebrities are people too, just like the rest of us. And just like us, they have the right to fall in or out of love, as much as they want, until they find the right person for them.
And this is what I want for ha ji won too. It doesn't matter who as long as she loves him and he loves her as much. Aren't you all excited to know her special someone? I feel like I have been waiting to know for ages. And I feel excited just thinking about it. You know this faceless guy who ha ji won loves hahaha! Now, im dreaming.
And yeah, ha ji won also inspires me to visit the gym and try to keep fit.

and yeah, i also read that ji chang wok feels he's ha ji won's manager. to think he is much younger than she is. another testament of ha ji won's innocent and sincere personality.
i remember, yoo jae suk, one of korea's famous variety show hosts, always has good things to say about ha ji won. someone had even commented that its not in his nature to praise a celebrity so much but with ha ji won, he always says good things about her and every time they're together in a show, its obvious that he looks after her. very protective oppa.

my husband had already told me to get a grip. he witnessed my breakdown over chilbong lol! anyways, in the drama thread, i just observed that most of the disgruntled viewers were those who focused on jh scenes and/or skipped taek's scenes and/or those who, unfortunately, stopped watching after jh's confession or even before that.
