Consort Ling's firstborn, Princess Hejing died the same year as her mom. So, that title (First Rank Princess) rightfully could have been given by QL himself.

So total all Qianlong's daughters granted a First Rank Princess are 3 of them. Daughters of Empress Fuca, Consort Ling and Consort Dun.

Fuca's daughter has it right to received that title but Ling and Dun are indeed lucky considering the fact the title only reserved to Empress's daughters.

For Ling's case probably because of  Qianlong's love for Ling but for Consort Dun's case not because of her but solely because her daughter......

based on how Consort Ling kept on elevated to the higher ranks while Consort Dun kept on getting promoted and demoted. lol

Either way, i think the reason behind it because he feel happy to have a child with his favourite consort after so long and also for having a child at 63 years old ( which he thought he could never had a child again at that age).

Presumably they would've been titled before/when they got married and that happened when Qianlong was still alive.

I have checked, Princess Hejing died in the same year Ling died., 1775 so it must be Qianlong granted the rank to her. Probably because he loved her since she is his first child with Ling after more than 10 years together. Like how he loved Consort Dun's daughter, Princess Hexiao and make her first rank princess because he thought as his age that time he could never had a child again so he was so grateful and doted on her since all his other childs already left the palace.

So in my opinion, it the same reason... he granted the title to both princess. He favoured Ling so much of course he wanted to have child with her and after so long he had one and on the other, he didn't expect to have child again because he was so old, she was born at his golden age, of course she is so precious to him.

The other 3 are Consort Jia, Consort Yu and Consort Wan (not featured in Yanxi).

Consort Yu and Wan generally not so favored judging that when he was enthroned, the two ladies were only given the title of Cangzhai (the second lowest rank) and sadly, these two ladies lived very long lives yet neglected.

Consort Yu at least had Yongqi whom is QL's favorite son but she was gradually neglected after his death. Even sadder is Consort Wan. Despite becoming QL's concubines before he ascended the throne, she was only promoted to Imperial Concubine (Pin) in 1749 (Consort Ling who entered the harem much later was promoted to a "Pin" the very same year she was made a concubine in 1745) and held that rank for FOUR DECADES before being promoted to a Consort (Fei) in 1794. She outlived QL.

Oh man, what a sad life...for Consort Wan. Judging by the ranks of Qianlong promoted his wives after he enthroned i guess that Gao and Xian probably the longest served as his wife along with Fuca compare to the other 5 of his early wives. He promoted Fuca as Empress, Gao as 3rd rank consort and Xian as 4th rank consort the other are just lower ranks.

So not all his early wives were buried  together in main tombs.

and... It seems like Consort Ling surpassed all Qianlong's concubines and his early wives in terms of ranks and QL's affection/ respect except Fuca.

**p.s : I really like an actress who play Consort Yu in Yanxi. She looks regal same as Charmaine Sheh.

Anyway, just an extra info to share based on the latest wiki updates. Not only Empress Xiaoyi (Ling) was added the title "Chun" during the reign of Jiaqing Emperor (which led to speculations and theories that it was added by her son who became the next emperor) but Empress Xiaoxian (Fuca) was also only added the title "Chun" after QL's death. So both are recognized as "his".

Oh so "Chun" on XiaoXian name was not added by Qianlong (?) ...can we trust this info?

or maybe ....for Empresses, to stamp and added the character same with the Emperor only can be added after the Emperor death..? Like how "Chun" were added on Empress Xiaoyi and Empress Xiaoxian's name after Qianlong died.

I agree on what you said about his feelings for Fuca which he well-documented it in his many poems to her. There's a lot of regrets over that little time they shared together. With Consort Ling, despite the absence of poems, his actions spoke very well of his affection towards her.

Qianlong and Ling had wonderful life together, as you can tell by his actions on her. In her death decree, he described his relationship with Ling as is still fresh..meaning after her death, so probably the memories with her still fresh and alive for him. That's why he care to make her as an Empress although there was no need to do so futhermore that was after 20 years of her death.

While for Fuca, he can only redeem by wrote a poems for her.

I think that, he punished his sons for not giving much attention of her funeral and his officials not because he was so angry with them or they did something that cannot be forgiven. But because he regret on his action so he need to vents his anger, his sadness, his regret on other by find faults on them. hahaha maybe...later he did regretted his action on punishing his sons right..

Does anyone know why Consort Ling's first daughter (Princess Hejing) was made a First Rank Princess (Gulun Gongzhu), which is usually reserved for daughters of the Empress (for example, Fuca's only surviving daughter was Princess Hejing (different jing character) of the First Rank), while her second daughter (Princess Heke) was made a Second Rank Princess (Heshuo Gongzhu), reserved for daughters of consorts & concubines?

Maybe not Qianlong who gave the Gulun Rank to Hejing, probably Jiaqing Emperor did that? Like how Jiaqing  make his younger brother, Yonglin 1st rank prince. Yonglin was given second rank prince by QL. After QL death, Jiaqing make him a first rank prince.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok i am a bit confuse with the Han/ Manchu and the banner during that era, there was a high and low banner (?)...anyone care to explain about this and what is booi?

Also, i read this on Consort Chun that she is  Han Chinese Plain White Banner.

" The 20th-century historical text Draft History of Qing incorrectly recorded Imperial Noble Consort Chunhui's family name as "Sugiya" (蘇佳). While some Qing dynasty imperial consorts who were of Han Chinese origin changed their family names to Manchu-sounding names after marrying the emperors, Imperial Noble Consort Chunhui never changed hers. This was because she came from a commoner background, and her family was hence not eligible to be placed under a Manchu banner."

She cannot change her family name because she came from commoner background and not qualified to be placed under Manchu but why Consort Ling who was born from lowly Han background family can changed her family name to Manchu? as Manchu Bordered Yellow Banner.

  4. I read that total all Qianlong's early wives before he enthroned were 8 women...

Empress Fuca, Consort Xian, Consort Gao, Consort Chun, Consort Zhe and who are the other 3 women? Anyone know?

And among them 8, only 4 of them were buried with him together...

@ChloeR According to a chinese friend who told me her read up in weibo, QL kept company of Consort Ling even when she was on confinement. To think that a consort could not serve the Emperor's basic needs (ehem!) during that period and still he stayed by her side that entire time really showed the deep love he has for her.

I also think Qianlong really has a deep love toward Consort Ling.

Hardly for the Emperor to accompany his consort who couldn't serve him. Most of the time as what i watch in drama..the emperor only stop by and visit his consort for a brief moment then leave.. and go to the consort who can serve  and fulfill his needs.

So if it true Qianlong really chose to be by her side during those time means, there were more than just "serving his needs" between them. Probably Ling is a good listener to him and easy to talk and share anything. Men always need and depend on someone who can listen and understand them.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------@

Qianlong wrote lots of poems for Fuca but none for Ling despite all the info we read about how he doted on Ling so much. I guess that, all the memories he had with Ling enough for him to remember her that there is no need to tell how he feel on poems. All the attention he gave on someone he deeply love probably enough for them to understand each other feeling.

Unlike with Fuca, theyve been separated by a sorrow and bittersweet memories. How he regret on not realizing Fuca's serious condition and brought her on trip thus leads to her death. Fuca also not happy when she left the world because of losing her son. Seems like he regret because he not done much for her when she was still alive. So he pours all his feeling on poems.

i have finished watching the dvd. The tvb version like you have said before cut many scene such as :

    i. when YL hurt broken her arms, QL slept on the chair the whole night beside her.

ii. when QL noticed his arms bleed and Liu asked him to see the physician.

iii. Consort Yu waited outside Yanxi Gong (because she feel guilty YL got hurt)

iv. Quan Zi told YL Empress waited for her after YL saved ChenBi

    v. in later episode, a scene when Yongqi left Yanxi after lectured YL then YL sat infront of QL and said Yongqi is bla..bla.. (idk what she said)..this part was cut...in dvd after Yongqi left, QL already held YL hand and talked part why she sent her kids to others.

vi. YL told Yongqi to go for gun range practice

vii. scene where QL stand from his sit and walked (after he sentenced YL to be jailed in ep 34)

    and many scenes more....

Also they also change the background music for some scenes such as :

    i.  on the part when QL touched YL's face after saving her from snow

ii. YL and YCW scene at Yuan Ming Yuan Garden..

this all i have noticed so far.....

Not so happy la with this dvd...it give me different vibes and feeling...esp the soundtracks because it play a major part in Yanxi too...

i bet Haolan will be like this too since HK also cannot wait for this drama..sure TVB will buy the copyright again...

  6. i bought the dvd of Story of Yanxi Palace all episodes in Eng Sub...but one thing i dislike about the dvd are the themes (opening and ending), the production changed it to the cantonese songs.

I prefer more on the original themes....hmmm i am not so happy and satisfied actually although the eng subs quite accurate and better than the one subs by viewers. :(

i bought Empresses In The Palace dvd back then and they kept all same without change it any part or the theme songs.

I dont really know how to translate that, but basically most pampered in the harem. I do wonder why they dont consider QL love Consort Ling but only pamper, but base on those videos I do think that similar to the drama QL may not have mentioned his love for Consort Ling but his actions seems to have reflect his affections.

@heychumi well in my personal opinion probably the historians wants to acknowledged Fuca as the only one loved by QL. Mostly because he wrote poems for her. Like how they described Fuca is QL's true love solely because of that. (but sometimes I wonder what if there is no poems for her, how the historians wants to described QL loves for her because from what have been shared mostly based on....poems).

That is why they cannot described QL's favoured for others esp his most favorite concubine, Ling Consort as a love eventhough through his history record with Ling and the death decree, I can tell somehow he loved her although not as much as his love for Fuca.

So like how the historians make the world acknowledged Step Empress as the most hated QL's Empress they also can do that by making Fuca the most loved.

    _______________

    Thanks for the video.

Anyway why she cannot fulfill his basic need? Because she was sick? And he always kept her close?...did he personally took care of her when she sick?

  8. @ChloeR I do think he will bedded her for real not just merely testing. He's really wanted her so badly... you can tell by his face.

When did QL said YL only know how to make him mad? Which ep?

    ______________

@Cedric Ong thank for clarified that point. I thought he told in his decree he will write for her thus make me feel all the poems he wrote probably to fulfill his words.

    ___________

"when Step Empress was strip off her title, while on the way back from the trip QL already send words back to the palace to renovate the queen's chamber which was next to his room for Consort Ling"

Seems like out of many theories about the fall of Step Empress probably the one make sense the most is about to appointed Ling Consort to be an Imperial Noble Consort. How he cannot wait any longer to renovate the chamber for Ling.

Thanks @Cedric Ong you are great, appreciate the decree update, but the Chinese seems too deep for understanding :)

I want to share a long post. I have to apologies in advance but somehow this drama just interest me to research more.

Well just wanted to share this youtube post, not sure if it has been shared before. It is about QL 3 empress. The last part is on how QL actually raise Ling Fei from a humble servant all the way to Imperial Noble Consort. Note here is that, she is not only a servant but of Han blood. So the position she was elevated is really amazing.   After watching this clip, somehow I can relate the word Ling other than being smart also means understanding, which from the drama, YL despite all her mischievous deeds and antics, do understand QL.  Also in this clip, it was noted even when Ling Fei was promoted as Ling Ping - QL actually made her the highest rank of all the Ping Fei despite her lowly position.

I actually watch another video earlier but I could not find it any longer, that clip, the historians actually mentioned that QL will bring Consort Ling for all his excursion. But there was one time when Consort Ling was sick, her name did not appear in the excursion list. But surprisingly, at the end of the trip her name pop out. Apparently, after she recovered QL actually ask for her to be escorted to join him. It shows that QL did not like to be separated with her for a long period. Also in that clip, it actually mentioned that when Step Empress was strip off her title, while on the way back from the trip QL already send words back to the palace to renovate the queen's chamber which was next to his room for  Consort Ling. How I wish all this details could have been put into the drama as well....(anyway if anyone do find this video in you tube could you please share as I was trying to rewatch)

Thanks and my apologies on the rambling.

I hope you can find it and share here the video historians talk about her followed QL to most of his excursions and the order about Empress’s chamber for Ling.

He referred to himself as her husband is because Fuca is indeed his only legally wedded wife. The rest are just his concubines. Remember a scene where YL weeping over MY's death? She said to Fuheng she felt guilty pushing MY to wed and wear that red wedding dress because she couldn't wear it in this lifetime (even when she is already "married" to QL).

I read somewhere that if Ling was to behave like YL in Yanxi, she would have long been beheaded. Lol. Nevertheless, a spunky, smart heroine is always the most beloved to modern viewers. Haha.

Speaking of Ling, the drama Yanxi considerably quite close in depicting their relationship of 30years and still feel like new. And gifted her the posthumous title and stamping "Chun" is him already considering her as his proper wife (though not mentioned in the decree). And I agree with the actor Nie Yuan said about QL, YL is always in his heart but since he is an emperor, all he could do is giving her endless favours.

Ooh. I thought he regards their relationship like husband/wife instead of Emperor/Empress because he's only feel that way with Fuca. After all I feel their relationship is wonderful. QL is always have a soft spot for Fuca. One thing funny for me when he said he will write poems for her. Its feel like an obligation for him. It's unnecessary to mentioned  it actually. Since I always feel that if you really wants to do something for the one you love, there is no need to tell other in advance.

Haha I know this type of heroine like in Yanxi is the one viewers wants to watch nowadays. It's quite fresh for Yanxi actually when they changed the stereotype period drama heroine to be more modern type. Yes, she could beheaded and there is no way an Emperor will fall in love because you are different from other.@)hahaha

For me, I feel amazed when he described his relationship with Ling still fresh and new even after 30 years living together esp since he has so many women in his palace. Their relationship probably filled with adventures lmao.  (meaning he is always discovered new interesting things about Ling throughout their life together). He even mentioned her life nearly half of a 100 (about she died at 49), I know but somehow when he said this means he appreciated every single moment they've been together.

In interview, Nie Yuan said Fuca is QL's first love but YL is his true love.

These are what i got from baidu, a chinese version of wiki. These are the words/decree/edict from Qianlong upon the death of each woman, with some description of her life, some praises, her death and general funeral instructions.

As u can see, his words for step empress was the least among the 3. He totally skipped praising her char.

Pardon me. The words used are quite profound, old way of saying things. I won't be able to translate every word. So i will list key points or parts that i understand.

    Fucha

From a well-respected clan. Became my partner......no of years mentioned as Empress.

Virtuous, filial, obedient, frugal, well-respected (this part is more of description of her char).

Died in...... I feel very pained. I understand my wife well as a husband. Will write poems to her.

I choose Xiao Xian as her name....Xiao=filial, Xian = virtuous.

Give her all of a funeral as an Empress.

    Step Empress

She didn't make any mistake after being an Empress but last spring during out-of-palace journey........her char changed and behaved very unfilial in front of the Empress Dowager. Unrational behavior. Like a mad person. I ordered her back to the palace. After a year, her illness worsened and passed away. Her blessing as an Empress is thin, thus can't be respected as one. My actions towards her is proper considering her mistake. Already merciful to her by keeping her title. But the funeral can't follow an Empress. Only imperial noble consort.

    Ling

1st few sentences talking about assigning who to handle things. I posthumously named her as Ling Yi Imperial Noble Consort.

Wow. the 2nd line, almost 90% i don't understand. Ok, her char is gentle and polite (what? that's totally not the Ling we know in this drama, haha), Everyone respect her.

The rest of the 3rd line i can't translate as well. Seems to be talking about her job (probably handling the palace well).

Unluckily she passed away from illness, nearly half of a 100 (which is right, she passed at 49). 30years of company like new/fresh (meaning he never tired of her). I now felt so empty.

The next part i don't understand again. Her life is virtuous and wise.

The rest i think are about some items related to her titles given to her. Probably a reminder that she's worthy of these titles. And her funeral accordingly.

Thank you for this information. Although you've been busy but still helping me to find this info.

    __________

    Fuca

This line "I understand my wife well as a husband.....and I feel very pained".... He referred to himself as a husband to Fuca instead of an Emperor/Empress. Seems like his marriage/ relationship with Fuca is the most perfect and happiest among all.

    Step Empress

Even after her death, QL still not forgive her. When I read the decree I don't feel he had grudge or angry at SE anymore but just a simply plain and empty decree without any feels. Only to justified his action on SE before her death. QL seems is a very forgiven person, he even forgave the officer who requested a proper funeral for SE later and when the officer tried again, then executed him. I always thought if you deeply love someone, no matter how much you hates and despise the person once you love, at the end even after so many years you will remember about the sweet memories that once you had.esp when the person already dead. I guess QL probably had no love for her....because whether you exist or not is still the same and doesn't matter to him.

    Ling

Gentle and polite. Haha totally different as what we have seen in drama. I used Google translate for some of her article keep on mentioned soft..now I know why. She been described as a gentle person by QL.

This line "30 years of company feel like new/fresh (meaning like never tired of her).. I now feel empty. I feel like she is second love of QL. For 30 years still feel like new to him wow....and now I understand why he didn't let any of his concubines to be buried in the main tomb after Ling. He seems like no one he feel deserved and suitable to be in there.

QL explained about the titles given to her probably wants to clarified that she deserved it esp when he wanted to put her next to him in the main tomb. This is to avoid any objection since Ling well known came from lowly Han background and started from as lady in waiting. His long decree about Ling, her char, titles etc explained all.

*another question. Is it true her funeral was described like this?

"On the day of her death, Emperor Qianlong ordered almost all the emperors and grandchildren to wear filial piety, adding eighteen to seventy-six of her original ceremonies, only one less than the empress’s.

^ wasnt it the step-empress who damaged the zither?

Also, there was a scene when the step-empress ordered Yuan Chun Wang to deliver something to Yangxin Palace. One was Yingluo’s favorite flowers Gardenias and the other was a pouch or was it the zither? Im not sure of her intention. If someone could explain it, that would be great! ^_^

Additionally, I dont know if anyone notices this but Qianlong is very very obvious in his favoritism. LOL Notice how in the earlier parts, Gao guifei and Chun Guifei never get to sit at the table with the emperor and the empress at banquets. Despite being the same rank as the former two, Yingluo gets to sit at the same table with Qianlong and Step-empress during the trip to Hangzhou. On top of that. She also came late haha xD

Yes but why did they send it the zither to QL and QL asked Liyu to throw it? Somehow like the people behind it want to make QL think YL hates him.

I also noticed that too. Supposedly she wasn't allow to sit altogether with Emperor and Empress right? Only Empress can in the main table. This scene make YL' s position equally with an Empress.

Yes the earlier part, QL' s affection towards the other concubines and consorts can be described as OBLIGATION but his affection  towards YL is his own INTEREST & DESIRE.

After all sleeping with different  women every night is one of an Emperor's duty with intention of producing heirs.

p.s: QL in ep.where he wanted to force YL to sleep with him. His face seriously looks like a lecherous and naughty man lol.

    _________________

I think the reason QL shocked after he was told YL' s pregnancy because:

1.QL forgot about he bedded YL at first until  Ye Tianshi told YL pregnant for 3 months then he remembers about the time they slept together 3 months ago first night after YL back to Yanxi.

    2. Because he thought YL will never wants to carry his child, so he came in surprise to see that YL finally 'willing' to conceive his baby.

@lyserose I remember the painting because in ep. 63 (?) QL looks at the painting he drew with YL and reminisce the scene. I feel he is so deeply in love with her when watching the scene. Then Liyu came in to tell him about Yanxi Palace summoned a doctor because someone sick. And I wonder who damaged the zither QL gave to YL? Are the culprit did that because want to let QL think YL hates him?

My bad yes fourth rank..but i didn't know he had eyes on Rong because of her riding horse skill. I only know he favoured her because of her beauty and her body odour.. but as much he favoured her still he didn't promote her to more higher ranks.

    ----------------------------------------------------

    @ChloeR

I wish there will be a subs soon. Sometimes i didn't understand the very little things QL did in the drama..like what @lyserosesaid in ep 26, he came over to see Fuca who was asleeps but his eyes wondered around to look for YL. If lyresose didnt mentioned this, i wouldn't notice it. After that i immediately  back to watch ep 26.

I only understand when scene in ep.33-34 after i watched over and over...but it quite obvious his intention coming over to Changchun only to see YL (except the first visit, it was clear to see Fuca).

    -----------------------------------------------------

Yes the drama makes him loves Fuca dearly (even in deep sadness over the death of Fuca's childs) but in later episode seems like he completely forgotten about Fuca since he is so inlove with YL and tried hard to win her heart. You got a point about QL's devotion there during Fuca's and YL's. Remember when he tried to force YL to sleep with him and at that time Fuca is just woke up from coma. And during a time Fuca's pregnant, he was so happy with the news because finally he will have a child again with Fuca but on the other hand he already fall in for YL and wanted to have YL by offering  himself to YL indirectly (refer to the scene he ordered  YL to change his clothes. It's different when YL already become his woman, instead he used Chen Bi to win YL back. After they get back together, the other women are no match with YL because QL have eyes only for her.

In my personal opinion, in drama Empress Fuca is QL's first love and YL is his true love  and in history i truly think that Empress Fuca is QL's first love (maybe true love) but Consort Ling is his second love.

In history they regard Empress Fuca as QL's true love because he wrote many poems for her until his death. So historican concluded she is his true love. But you look at the history, QL also wrote poems for Gao but none for Consort Ling (Cedric mentioned after i asked her before) eventhough Consort Ling known was favoured more than Gao. I read that mostly of his poems more like he feel regret and longing for her(?).  For some reason, i feel that feeling regret for someone cannot be interprete as love...missing maybe. Fuca probably the most nice woman he ever met and losing her make him feeling empty and so he wanting to meet her again. Thats why he wrote poems for her a lots. For example, you have a very close male friend then later you found a guy who you fall in love and get married with him and at the same time you will feel empty because your male friend drifting apart from you...thats how it feel as the way i see it..hahaha

    ----------------------------------------------------------

i find it quite interesting with the differences of QL's character in early part and the later part. Early episodes, he was so like an Emperor should be then in later episodes he is more like a lover. I don't how to explain this but i can see the different/ changes with QL when Fuca is still alive and after YL became his concubine.

@lyserose "My curiosity on Consort Rong is that, since was reported to be greatly favored by QL, I am curious on her ranks. If I wasn't mistaken, she ranked lower than Consort Shu and she made it as far as being a "Fei" only.

I also curious about that too before..i have checked she only promoted to the third rank/a consort only. Although she was known greatly favoured by QL but her ranks not that high. So in my view, QL was attracted to her appearance (she smell nice and quite a beauty) but not highly think of her. More like she just an accesories for him lol....

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

i re-watch ep 33-34 when Fuca was in coma. I think the main reason QL keep on going to Chang Chun Palace actually because he wants to meet Ying Luo and not intend to visiting Fuca.  At first he went to see Fuca later when he found out YL was there and the next day he went straight to see YL first at the back.

After that, the next visit he couldn't do so because Er Qing came in between when he was about to ask Ming Yue about YL. Thus he direct to see Fuca and only after ER told him YL also in Chang Chun, he went to see her only to find out YL & Fuheng were together.

** EQ said she will tell YL about the good news but what is it? QL wants to make her concubine or let her take care of Fuca? Later when Li Yu asked QL then he threw the announcement decree (?) away...

About their coffins. Qianlong was buried in Yu Ling/mausoleum with Fuca on his right, Ling on his left....others include Gao, Jia and another less-known Zhe (also surname Fuca, but not related to Empress Fuca). So there are 6 (QL + 5 ladies). One extra space was empty.

    v2-a1e09c124c8ebd91a74ebc3a3a782891_hd.j

Interestingly it's speculated Qianlong had left a space besides him for Ling. 1st the coffins were confirmed by experts that they were never moved. Ok, Empress Fuca was naturally reserved on his right. Then we look at their time of death.

    Info from here :

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qianlong_Emperor#Family

    Qianlong (1799)

    Fuca (1748)

    Ling (1775)

    Gao (1745)

    Zhe (1735)

    Jia (1755)

Ignoring Fuca empress....the rest besides Ling all died long before her....and already held" Imperial Noble Consort" (either alive or posthumously) at their time of death....while Ling was probably only "Noble Consort" during their period. Yet they weren't placed nearer to the Emperor's coffin (which is fixed at the centre). So the guess is Qianlong already thought very highly of Ling at that time. Even before her 1st daughter (b1756) and son (b1757).

Of course it's just speculation. Maybe Qianlong just left a space knowing someone but not necessary Ling would be suitable later. Anyway in the end, she took that space in actual history, nobody else. Even position 7 which is empty, he never put anyone in.

Experts just find it unusual b'cos usually they (all same ranking) would fill up the space by sequence of death (except the Empress).

    Chinese article :

    https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/43856428

Since in the recent topic here mentioned about the main tomb and 'the empty space beside QL' so I just wants to add on....lol with my theories.

    * after Cedric explained about this before I also have a thoughts that the empty space probably QL left it for SE since she was the only living Empress after EF. It just too bad the dark incident happened. Then Consort Ling took that spot since she is the highest rank consort as an Imperial Noble Consort and the 'acting Empress' that time.

    * QL let no 3 spot on his left for SE first then later for CL since both of them were the leader of the harem during their respective period. Since no.2 reserved and fixed for his 1st Empress (Fuca) so he wanted to reserved no 3 for his other Empress. Be it SE, CL or other.

    * CL became QL's concubine in 1745 the same year Consort Gao died. From the history records, she seems to be favoured by QL start from the very beginning so maybe like Cedric explained before about the speculation QL left that space for Ling is TRUE.

    And....

The sequence of QL's wives death :

    Zhe (d.1735 - no.5)

    Gao (d.1745 - no.4)

    Fuca (d.1748 - no.2)

    Jia (d.1755 - no.6)

    Ling (d.1775 - no.3)

No.2 fixed for Fuca. If QL reserved no.3 then the other spot should be fill following their death from 4-5-6 but actual arrangement in the main tomb is from 5-4-6. Zhe died first shouldn't she be at no.4 then Gao at no.5?...and could it be no.7 was meant for Step Empress actually, there is a possibility if she didn't become an Empress..

I think the placement of QL's wives in their respective tombs is how he valued them individually and personally. He probably valued Gao more than Zhe that why Gao at no.4 and Jia could be a little bit less valued by him compared to the other that why she at no.6. Maybe.....

........ and if we look at the arrangement, QL already reserved the no.3 spot even when Fuca was still alive (years before her death in 1748) and also no one know at that time whether Step Empress will be an Empress or not right?  (especially Step Empress was chosen to be an Empress later was not by QL's decision but by Empress Dowager. QL even postponed her promotion).

So we can assumed QL never thought of appointed SE to be an Empress before Fuca's death and the suggestion by ED was made only after the death of Fuca. Also since the other 2 wives died earlier than Fuca and he didn't place them near him but from there we can tell the spot no.3 already been reserved by then.

If QL reserved no.3 after Fuca death/SE already an Empress, I'm sure 100% confident for SE but it was already reserved  start from 1735 when he made Zhe to be placed at no.5 by skipped no.3 & no.4.

So maybe like Cedric said before QL left that space without knowing who deserved to be there but at the end Ling took that space.

Haha. My bad. Could be that is the result from what I read directly via the help of our dear friend, Google Translate. Your interpretation probably is more accurate. Not directly trained by Fuca but since Fuca was the head of the harem, so indirectly received training/supervision as a palace maid. I read from a blog that in an elegy to Fuca, QL mentioned that Consort Ling had benefited from the 'education' offered by the empress, though the exact meaning of this is unknown.

History always fascinates me. It was the same how I searched high and low about Choi Suk Bin after watching Dong Yi.

I am not sure if there's some error with the translation since I can't read chinese, but it was interesting to learn that Consort Ling was his most beloved concubine and honoring her with a funeral ceremonies only one less than an empress and still honor her years after her death. And as @Cedric pointed out in earlier post, adding "Chun" to her title meant he put a stamp that she is his, thus acknowledging her as a proper wife. The one great thing about Yanxi is at least, whatever that we were being fed did not stray far from history. Ofc, Fuca is irreplaceable but it is great to know that Consort Ling was deeply favored as depicted in the drama.

From what I read, QL seems more sentimental towards his early wives whom he married before he ascended the throne. Out of the 5 who joined him in his burial mausoleum, Consort Ling is the only concubine he took in after he became an Emperor.

Same with me. Once I'm interested in something, I will always search here and there to find more info about it. Just like before when I was so into Empresses In The Palace.

And with Yanxi Palace, I'm so keen to know more about Consort Ling.

    ------------

With the Chinese link, I used google to translate and its the same about her funeral.

I read before that Consort Ling's funeral almost the same as the funeral of an Empress, that why I looked for it and found the article. Although a bit confusing to understand at first but quite informative and interesting to learn more about Ling.

Ling quite lucky among all QL's concubine/ consort. Being honor from the start till the end. First 10 yrs, although she was childless during that period, still she got promoted few ranks faster (a sign she's favoured by QL). Another 10 yrs, she bore QL many children in quite a short time one after another ( again a sign she is QL's favourite). Then again next 10 yrs, she was elevated to the highest ranks despite she started as a maid compared to the other QL's women that time. I read that Consort Shu enter the palace earlier and still alive that time also, if I'm not mistaken. Not to say, she was buried next to QL, a space he left empty and at the end he let Ling took that space. Next 20 yrs after her death, still she got privileged when QL make her an Empress Xiaoyi. I read QL's grandfather, Emperor Kangxi also has an Empress named Empress Xiaoyi.

Yea added Chun to make the person belong to him, that why I asked Cedric why QL did not added Chun when he given Ling the title Empress Xiaoyi earlier. Since her char Chun added by Jiaqing. And Cedric explained, need a few years to added the 'Chun'.

That why I'm more interested in Yanxi compared to Ruyi. Although there was some doesn't make a sense like how the servant behave toward the emperor or Fuca suicide etc but still we can get a picture or storyline same as when we read the history. In Ruyi, we knew that Ling was given a slow death but in history she was honoured. Its contradict.

Fuca is still irreplaceable and the most loved and favoured by QL and Ling's position probably second after Fuca in QL's heart.

Yes I kinda noticed that too and I mentioned about it when I found out QL wrote poems for Gao and the info about the tombs and who was buried with QL from Cedric in previous pages. I probably views his sentimental feeling towards his early wives as a respect to them for being with him from where he just a Prince until he became an Emperor.

Although most of QL's women that was buried with him were his secondary consorts before he became an Emperor and there was a record all of them being favoured by him but still he didn't placed them near his tomb. Also there was a few consorts he got after he became an Emperor that was favoured by him like Consort Rong/Fragrance Consort, Consort Chun etc but they didn't get a place to be buried with him. And Consort Ling the junior among the early wives got placed to the space next to his tomb. I think this is very special since he let the space vacant and when Ling died, he let Ling to be specially next to him. Cedric explained before the arrangement of tomb supposed to follow the sequence of death. Ling, the last one died among other but the closest been buried to QL.

But with Consort Ling, she was known being favoured by QL and from this I can tell although QL favoured many women other than Ling, still Ling the most favourite one among all (except Fuca).

    11 hours ago, lyserose said:

Anyway, based from what I read, while Consort Ling started off as a maid, though not a general maid but a maid directly assigned to serve concubine or empress, thus she received some training from Empress Fuca because QL already fancied her?

Where did you read that? I only read she was a maid but was not directly received training from Empress Fuca. Because Fuca leads the harem so all female maids under her management. She supervised them through the senior female maid. Remember in Yanxi, forgot which ep but the scene where YL set up a trapped to Prince (?). She was caught having an affair with royal guard then, since she's a maid, the decision to punish her decided by the Empress Fuca.

Quite interesting to know if Fuca trained her because of QL.

Now I am digging on Haolan since we have YL and QL in that drama too and that history is pretty interesting also.

I wonder in history about Haolan/ ED Zhao's son is really a Lu Buwei'son not Yiren. And she also have 2 illegitimate child's with Lu Buwei.

Cannot wait to watch. Its too late because the drama will air a year later in Nov 2019. I'm afraid if it didn't well receive later. The hype of Yanxi/ YL & QL still become the talk among viewers....they should make the drama airing now.

The "hair cutting" reason is just an official excuse given by QL. For this particular part, Ruyi's depiction of the hair cutting is probably more accurate than in Yanxi, because it must have been done in private that only QL knew the exact reason. Even then, nobody knew whether she actually did cut her hair or that was just a made up official reason since it is a grave blunder, thus a reasonable excuse for her fall from grace.

Some said she protested against his intention to acquire more concubines (I don't really buy this since she's been aware of this arrangement for many years), and some speculated that it was related to QL's intention to promote Consort Ling as depicted in Yanxi. Either way, whatever she committed must have been so graved for him to be so unforgiving. And I also don't remember ever reading about SE being one of QL's favourites (except in Ruyi) and he has always preferred Consort Ling than SE.

But based on both accounts from Yanxi and Ruyi, Step Empress is portrayed as a devoted wife who really loved her husband..

I think the most solid reason among those you mentioned above probably because QL's intention to promote Consort Ling as an Imperial Noble Consort.

As many known that there was a rules that Empress and Imperial Noble Consort cannot exist at the same time in the harem.

By promoting Ling to that level will only make Step Empress losing face and look down by others while Ling get all the advantage and respect because this action show that Qianlong really highly think of her and she is the most favour by him.

16 years of stability and peacefull life as an Step Empress so I believe she was one of a devoted wife to QL and a good ruler in harem.

I read that during that trip Consort Ling were there too.

But I also think that Consort Ling not an ambitious woman who after ranks and high position. She was described as beautiful, kind and smart from what I read (although idk whether it true or not). Her personality that make QL favoured her.

Her char Yi from Lingyi means perfect/ wonderful and Yi from Xiaoyi means good manner. This explains how QL described her as a person.

After watching Yanxi, I keep on searching about Consort Ling. Sometimes I even have a feeling QL always wanted to make her an Empress when she was still alive but cannot do so bc of her lowly background and other reasons so he make it real when he abdicated her son and that was after 20 years of her death. He could skip that but still he chose to granted her title Empress..

  20. About Ling Consort's funeral...read this in one blog...the bold one, wonder what is that...

"On the day of her death, Emperor Qianlong ordered almost all the emperors and grandchildren to wear filial piety, adding eighteen to seventy-six of her original ceremonies, only one less than the empress’s.

Later Emperor Qianlong’s poem Elegy to Emperor Yihuang and Imperial Concubine mourned: “Children and young men are married, leaving only childish and pitiful truth. The leader of the orchid palace is a leader. When we are born, we are born with illusions".

    Can anyone translate this.

    "不过她享有的殊荣也不差,在魏佳氏去世后,乾隆帝在她原有的仪仗中增加了十八件,达到七十六件,仅比皇后的仪仗少了一件,而且从魏佳氏留下的遗物中可以看出,她生前已经拥有东珠朝珠,大家可要知道东珠朝珠是帝后才有资格佩戴的,可见令妃的地位并不差。"

No, QL also never verbalized directly that he loves YL. Throughout the drama, the fact that he loves her been verbalized by others namely Step Empress, Yuan Chun Wang and Chen Bi. Interestingly, no one ever mentioned that YL loved QL. While YL herself did verbalized in her monologue that she did ever loved Fuheng whole-heartedly and said to YCW that she not only liked Fuheng, in fact loved him, YL never once said out directly that she loved QL. The most that was said was when she complaining about her look and comparing herself with Chen Bi and her jealous antics made the surprised MY guessing that she had fallen in love with QL which she poorly denied.

Can you tell me in what episode Step Empress and YCW said QL loves YL? And what did they say ?

    23 hours ago, lyserose said:

I agree. The older Step Empress is rather pitiful. Since the early episodes, she was devoted to loving her husband and she was very happy to finally have QL's attention when he had a fell out with YL. Despite all the bad things she did in the past, she did tried her best to keep her promise to YL and never harm any of the royal children. But QL had never favoured her right from the beginning. He respected her but never loved her. They unfortunately only had the kind of relationship that was bound by duty. That was all. I feel extremely sad for her when she asked QL (in episode 70 on the ship)....if he ever once thought of her during the fire and ambush incident? She was deeply hurt to know that QL only cared to protect YL.

I don't know but somehow I think this situation in drama probably happened in history too.

Like in history mostly described Step Empress and Qianlong's relationship more like bound on duty and full of respect instead of love. SE probably longing for Qianlong's love and attention as a life partner and when QL cannot give that, she finally reach her limit and cannot stand with it anymore thus leads her to cut her hair.

YCW was a good brother but he is too possessive. And tbh, I don't believe his words when he told YL that he wouldn't mind YL marrying any other man except QL because he sabotaged YL and Fuheng's chances several times too. He just wanted to keep her all to himself.

On YL's return to Yanxi Palace in episode 58

YL was greeted with her palace still in good keep. MY praised  Xiao Yuan Zhi (he was sent back earlier) for getting things done despite the short period. XYZ said when he came back, Yanxi palace was already in good keep so MY made a remarks that QL still care about YL that he ensure her palace being in good keep and YL was happy to hear that too. Turned out, it was Step Empress who ordered for Yanxi palace to be restored as it was to welcome YL back (since Step Empress had wanted to ask YL to join her to take down Chen Bi). On whether QL was aware that YL had return to Yanxi..... yes but he didn't visit her immediately. He told Step Empress to let Chen Bi learn palace etiquette at Yanxi (his move to make YL jealous of CB) but he was disturbed when Step Empress mentioned that YL has been sick since in Yuan Ming Garden. It was only after Fuheng told him that YL returned to the palace 3 days after learning about Chen Bi that QL visited her.

The dialogue in episode 59 when he visited her and saw her for the first time after 3 years

QL was not happy when he heard that YL was sick partially because of improper eating schedules. MY said, YL has been copying Buddhist script with ink mixed with blood, thus affecting her diet. When he first walked in and YL greeted him, he was being petty when he told her to not do the curtsy since she is sick and there was no need to pretend to be strong.  When YL cleared the table, he saw the marks on her fingers and YL explained it was the effect of dropping blood. He ordered YL to stop copying the script (since her health has been affected) but YL said, she had to disobey him since she had to keep her promise to Dowager about the script. QL then said, initially he didn't want to care at all about YL but she has been taking good care (on his behalf) of Dowager. He said since YL chose to continue copying the script with blood ink, she should not blame others for whatever consequences after that. When QL was about to walk out, YL reminded him of his promise (refer to episode 48 where she came to see him in guard's uniform) to not allow anyone bully her. She said, everyone in the harem saw QL visiting Yanxi palace that night and if he walked out on her, how would she be able to regain her place in the palace. So, QL agreed to a sleepover at Yanxi only to give face to YL and childishly said "The rest, don't even dream of it". LOL

On QL's monologue after he slept with YL....

He said "You know the thing that I really want to know (whether YL loves him or not) but why are you not giving me the answer...". QL never asked the question directly, in fact when YL told him about taking the anti-pregnancy medicine and told QL to put the past behind and stop being angry at her, QL said to her that she knew he wasn't angry only because of her taking birth control medicine, thus hoping she would satisfy him with an answer regarding her true feeling for him (like he told Chen Bi, he could not accept that he has no place in YL's heart).

Thanks once again. You should be the one subbing all the episodes of Yanxi Palace :D. So we won't trouble you and keep on asking you to translate.

*Btw I probably didn't notice this but did QL ever said he loves YL directly?

*I re-watch a scene in ep.67 and I feel sorry, sad and pity on Step Empress when she heard YL & QL acted lovey dovey while waiting outside and Liyu looks closer into her eyes, and I think there is a tears.

*also Liyu seems to know YL is the most important to QL. Every single time when QL in bad mood, he will call for YL to come over or keep on mentions Consort Ling to QL. Liyu also provoked QL to go to Yanxi in ep.55 after he had argument with YL over the death Er Qing.

*I like it when QL..... 1.He lied or more like cover up for YL in front of Step Empress when YL killed Er Qing and 2. When he asked YL to stop make it kite and wants her to play zither. Because he didn't wants her to be blame as the one who killed Chun Consort.

    --------------

What is the song in ep 37, when QL touch YL's face after he saved her from falling during the snow walk and the background music in ep.55, after QL confronted YL about birth control and he left the Yanxi Palace.
