At least for me, I hardly put any effort into those translations, and that's why they suck. I will admit that. I was just doing them on the fly without even transcribing the Korean first, and often remembered later on that I skipped something. Sorry about that. It wasn't like I was getting paid for them or anything.
I remember not liking the phrase "rest in peace" for "편히 쉬다" part either, but that was a literal translation (I suppose "rest in comfort" would have been closer) and the original sounded weird in Korean anyway, so I just left it there. I didn't think to use "be at peace," which would have gotten rid of the condolence-sounding problem, but the main verb was to "rest." I guess I should have just left out "peace" altogether now at hindsight.
With regard to the verb "버리다," I had chosen "to leave," which I now realize leaves out a lot. This particular verb was used repeatedly in several episodes, and if I was the official translator for subs, I would have kept the wording consistent, but since I was only filling in spots that were only in the SBS version without knowing what was used in DramaFever or other major Eng subs (I sometimes watched the DF version later on but tried to ignore the subs because the amount of inaccuracies bothered me too much), I just chose whatever made sense at the time. The Korean word means to throw away or to discard. Abandoning or forsaking are similar, but I don't like those words either. It's more like giving up or cutting ties.
The Korean writing itself is really bad. In fact, a few days ago, Korean fans on DC were naming favorite lines and unfavorite lines, and the favorite lines were very sparse while the unpopular lines were... just everywhere. Sometimes the word order isn't quite right so that they can mean something else other than what's intended, sometimes the word choices are so extreme that the characters seem inconsistent, some word choices just weren't appropriate at all, etc. With the current political fiasco in South Korea, the joke is that the puppetmistress appointed the director and writer to do this project.
Some of the lines in the SBS version were re-recorded later on, so what is in the international version tends to be what was in the original script. While Korean fans usually like the changed lines in the SBS version better, that's not necessarily always the case. It's really the actors who gave life to these characters. Each of them studied hard for their roles, coming up with their own backstories and rationale for their actions, etc. For example, Kang Hanna asked the writer about Princess Yeon Hwa because she couldn't get the whole picture of her character from just the scripts, and was told that YH and WS had spent some time together when they were little. Based on that little tidbit, Kang decided that YH had feelings for WS from early on, but had suppressed those feelings as WS didn't seem likely to succeed the throne. In the case of Yoon Sun Woo (Wang Won), like 80% of his lines were improvised by him because the script didn't give him much. We are even thankful for some of Wang So's skipped lines that were in the script because... even with the superb performance of LJG, those lines couldn't be redeemed.
So yeah, the subs were often inaccurate, but the original writing in Korean was flawed, too.

@ilovecoffeeandbooks @ladybirdz
Actually, why not. What can it hurt? Here are the addresses of the production companies of MLSHR:
BaramiBunda inc.: 37-4 Samseong-ro 119-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul (zip: 06094)
GT Entertainment: Seokkyeong Bldg. 2F, 108-3 Nonhyeon 2(i)-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul (zip: 06059)
YG Entertainment: 3 Huiujeong-ro 1-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (zip: 04028)
NBCUniversal: ...has several offices. Don't really know if it's worth it to contact them at all. BaramiBunda and GT (directly related to the director, Kim Kyu-Tae) probably have the extra scenes.
@misspiggie YG has some rights, but the director has to say yes first.

NICE IDEA !!!!!... They (whoever responsible of torturing us) should be punished! .Guess SBS etc..will get a MOUNTAIN of postcard from all over the world. Me too never satisfied. Lurking around the web to see other drama...end up ep 14 MLSHR. Sick!
SBS only broadcasted MLSHR and doesn't have any extra contents. It's the director who is ignoring the fans. He doesn't care and is not interested in releasing anything.

@ruizaio As always, thank you for the information! I take there hasn't been an update? I really want this to happen, but I'm starting to lose hope ㅠ ㅠ Is there anything else we might do to convince the PD?
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do. All we can do is wait and pray that the production companies will say yes even if the director says no.

SBS is no different from other international broadcasters with regard to any extra content of MLSHR. They don't own anything and can only show what the director/production companies give them. And the production companies aren't exactly motivated to provide anything because they got their paycheck a long time ago.

so originally, there was no travel element on both the actor and the actress role? they just added that after he left??? i think it was originally him who will time travel but later changed to the lead lady traveling time?
That's right. At first, there was no time traveling. That was added with Kang Ji Hwan. With LJG, it was just going to be about a fledgling doctor-in-training becoming a legendary healer that gives hope to people in Goryeo.

How does Kim Hee Sun (KHS) play into all these changes then? I didn’t know the character had evolved so differently since LJG was forced to bow out. The buzz was about KHS’s big return after marriage & baby, thus the pairing of KHS & LJG seems highly anticipated.
IF LJG did star in “The Great Doctor” (神醫), he would be the focal point. But with “Faith” (信義), KHS became the focal point. I can hardly believe that KHS will be bridesmaid to LJG (in “The Great Doctor”), given her star power.
LJG was the first to sign the contract for the Great Doctor, and KHS was supposed to be his love interest. Back then the story was purely going to be a medical sageuk set in Goryeo with some fantasy elements (think Legend). Then more actors (who'd worked with Kim Jong Hak before) signed on.
Then LJG had to cancel, and the actors including KHS decided to wait. When they got Kang on board, they made his character the doctor from future that travels back in time and falls in love with the Goryeo lady played by KHS (you can see that the focus is mainly on KJH in the trailer). Then again, Kang had to leave because of extenuating circumstances, and KHS and other actors still stuck around.
Then finally Writer SJN joined the team (by then they had like 80 versions of the script for episode 1) and they basically reversed the roles between the male and female leads. The director was very grateful to KHS for waiting for that long (over 2 years) and had said the drama wouldn't have been possible without her.

i was surprised when i learned he was originally should play the lead on that drama but military duties didnt allow him to proceed.. same set-up, time travel and goryeo time... but somehow was kind of relieved that he didnt proceed with that, it makes MLSHR special to me since its his first addicting "time travel" story..
Back when LJG was part of "The Great Doctor (神醫 shin eui - divine doctor)," the story was about him becoming a legendary doctor in Goryeo with the focus on Korean traditional medicine. After he left, they got Kang Ji Hwan and added the time traveling element, and after Kang left, Writer Song Ji Na joined and changed the story to Choi Young and a female doctor from the future. This is also when they changed the title to "Faith (信義 shin eui - faith, loyalty)" to avoid issues with other sageuks coming out at the time (one was going to have the same title but then changed it to Horse Doctor, and another one also featured a timetraveling doctor). So even if LJG had gotten to play his role back then, it wouldn't have been a timetravel story.

@ruizaio What do you think of the leaked kiss photo before the drama started? Some people thought it was another angle of the forced kiss but her clothes and hand's position were different. I was thinking that probably was a secret meeting during the last year of Yo's reign. I wanted so badly to see that scene and at the end it seems that is another deleted scene.
The hand was a crew member's. I've resigned myself to think of it as a rehearsal of the forced kiss... although it would be nice if there were more kisses or other general lovey dovey moments of So and Soo.

Any development on dvd? i have a few friends who kept asking me where they can buy the dvd. they dont go to forum or ol, limited english.
Have the director made up his mind? blu-ray too expensive. but if it's dvd they definitely will purchase it
We are still waiting and gathering information to convince the director. If it gets decided, it will either be released as both Blu-ray and DVD or just in the DVD format. Then there will be a pre-order page set up on one or two online stores (YesAsia or Innolife) and we will still have to wait for six months or longer for them to actually come out.

@ruizaio Thank you for the fascinating insight into the language used. Is this an example of scenes where the speech used is inappropriate, or is 너를 은애한다 acceptable in this case?
Also, does So using this particular phrase indicate that his feelings for Soo are more than merely romantic, but familial as well, or am I just reading too much into it?
은애한다 is inappropriately used in many other fusion sageuks , so it's not just a problem with this writer. Also, Wang Wook and Lady Hae used this expression, too. It's not just Wang So. At least when General Park asked about his daughter and Eun, he used a more direct expression 이쁨 (cherishing), and Hae Soo used 사랑 in her answer. The fact that this writer still used 사랑 in other contexts (it was also used for Jung with regards to his mother's love) does show that she was inconsistent with her wording. She should have just stuck to it instead of blindly copying the term from other fusion sageuks.

Thank you for this - I was wondering too. Would you mind please breaking it down for me more literally?? I understand 너를means you/your in the object form but not sure about the rest. Perhaps 은 is a past/ present modifier but then what about 애? And 한다 is the declarative formal low form of the verb 하다 - to do, to have - often used with adjectives. Sorry to be such a pain but I have a very basic understanding of Korean and I am still learning so I get curious when I can't figure something out. Or perhaps it is ancient language often used in Sageuks??
은애 refers to mercy (은) and love (애), and is more appropriate for the love and affection of parents for their children. So it isn't exactly appropriate to replace "사랑," but for whatever reason, is used a lot in fusion sageuks. 괴다 is the right word but not many modern day Koreans would understand. 연모하다 would be a better choice.

@smitten1710 @fengari @misspiggie
Actually, had LJG not been kidnapped by the Korean military, his role in Faith (the Great Doctor back then) was going to be a traditional doctor of Goryeo. The story of Choi Young and time-traveling woman doctor was writer SJN's work when she joined the production later on.

@sosooyah19 I remember @ruizaio clarifying that someone confirmed with Minhwee that the flower on the hairpin is a lotus, to which @Hanazumi also posted her interpretation to the meaning of lotus.
Waiting to hear your revised analysis However, it is interesting that Soo perked up when she heard that Jung had brought peonies... perhaps there is an added meaning to that flower in the drama as well? Do you remember?
@ruizaio The hopes of an uncut DVD version sounds bleaker by the minute I wish they would have had a special episode at the end, incorporating deleted scenes as well as the alternate ending that LJE hinted at. Oh well... still holding out hope that we will be pleasantly surprised.
Actually, a later interview with the designer at Minhwee said that the flower is (Moutan) peony. I guess whoever answered the phone when the Korean fan on DC asked didn't know.
The Korean fans are trying hard to convince the director to give up the unreleased scenes... hoping that he'll be generous.
Also, I have compiled a list of some known deleted scenes on the Blu-ray/DVD team's Tumblr page. You can read it here:

well, its the only way we can forgive the roller coaster issues that happened in MLSHR...
won't he get paid for the additional work? even if there's a demand? i mean people will buy it.... and i just thought it was not unusual to have a directors cut... movies have it, why cant a series?
In Korea, DVD/Blu-ray releases of dramas barely break even in terms of cost/profit. In the case of Blu-rays, they can't even produce them domestically, so there's a lot of cost involved with that as well. It is true that there have been other Kdrama director's cut releases (including the head director of MLSHR's previous works), but in those cases, the director himself loved his work enough to want to improve his work. Also, the fans had to show enough interest and love (in the case of DOTS, the DC fan community sent some presents to the director to basically bribe him - despite the huge success of the show, they too had to fight tooth and nail to get it) to convince the production that it will be worth it. It's just the way it is in Korea.

Gosh... but LJG's SOON and IU's handkerchief post survive though, so can we assume that they just prevent it from looking too obvious? I just try to remain hopeful here
They didn't remove the articles themselves, but edited out the parts where the ending was mentioned.
@ziggy123 The director doesn't get anything out of a director's cut (more work for no money) other than just satisfying whatever his professional ego wants his work to be. In this case, we are actively refusing his two (or more) versions and asking for something different (more of the deleted scenes that he purposely left out). In fact, we may even get someone else to reedit the episodes as long as he agrees to release all the unseen footage. But would he give permission? He may be offended if we don't tread carefully.

@Gabi Bros The actors don't have anything to do with the DVD production. I'm starting to wonder if there is a psychological mind game going on between the actors and the production because all the interviews mention the edited out scenes and the production goes after those articles and gets rid of them. Same for Kang Hannah's comment to IU's IG post. Her comment confirmed that the hand with the handkerchief was Wang So's, but for whatever reason, she took it down.
@akinahana89 People quickly lose interest once the show is over. Also, if the specifications of the set isn't satisfactory (inclusion of most if not all deleted scenes for example), they won't actually order the DVD/Blu-ray set.

[Drama 2016] Moon Lovers ❤ Scarlet Heart Ryeo, 달의 연인-보보경심 려 \^0^/ Soompi Kdrama 2016 Winner

@misspiggie Imagine Wang So referring to Hae Soo as a richard simmons. The actual Korean word isn't as harsh, but the impact would be similar.
EDIT: Wow, I didn't realize that richard simmons was the filter for curse words on Soompi. That explains so much...! The particular word I used started with the letter B.
Somebody on DC just posted more info about one of the deleted scenes from early episodes. It's about this scene:
Initially, this picture appeared in a press article that introduced some of the key plot points for future episodes to come. The description about this particular picture in that article was that Wang So was apologizing to Wang Mu for killing the assassins.
The person (who didn't specify how s/he knows this - either from the leaked script or the actual script, or could even be from a member of the crew) posted an explanation under the title of "Why Wang So had mercy on Wang Yo." (Link will only open in a mobile browser if accessing from outside of Korea)
Basically, the scene above takes place after Wang Geon gives Wang So permission to stay in Songak. Mu takes So back to the temple he burned, asking him if it's true that he did kill all those people and if he'd killed lives like that before. Mu laments the fact that So shed so much blood and tells him not to do something like this ever again, that he should have mercy when wielding his sword. Then Mu turns around, and Ji Mong explains to So that this merciful side of Mu is why Ji Mong serves and follows him. So also vows his allegiance to Mu at this point.
This, this skipped scene would have forshadowed how Mu's reign would be short because of his merciful side and explained why So would be so loyal to Mu, why So would spare Yo's life later on, and why Ji Mong leaves So in the end.
