  1. Hi alll!!! I'm late for ep 11-12 discussions. Huhu

I was quite busy and now I don't know where to start to backread :sweatingbullets:

Ep 12 was interesting. I think Noh's reveal that she's from North Korea kinda nullified all the theories made about how the portal was opened. Most theories were the portal opened when the flute was broke in half, and it caused a disturbance that resulted to the portal being open. But Noh came to Corea a long, long, long time ago. Now I wonder who is pulling the strings behing all this, surely theres a bigget power than Lee Rim. Even Rim seemed to be shaken in ep 12. And my early theory that Rim is keeping mum alive is to use as bait for Gon is right! Hahaha

Also...is the PM dead or the doppelganger dead? I'm not sure if it was always doppelganger PM in Corea from the beginning or the actual PM...I feel like a chunk of whatever happened to PM and doppelganger is missing. I'm curious what happened to whichever version of her. I assume one of them is dead since the lady has a lighning scar. Huuuuu

Looking forward to ep 13. I wonder how they will wrap this, there are so many new reveals and frankly the possibilities for back stabbers is abundant.

Zombie Detective is a survival comedy drama about a zombie who struggles in the human world after he takes up the identity of a detective four years ago.

The said drama will provide unique and fun storyline that has never been seen before with a zombie character that has sexy and charismatic look.

If Choi Jin Hyuk will accept the lead role, he will be playing the character of a detective agency CEO Kim Moo Young.

The said character loses his memories in the past and decided to humbly accept his fate as a zombie.

In order to survive in the human world, he hides in the hills while practicing how to live like a human being.

However, he discovers a corpse without any family members nor friends. He then infiltrates the village with that identity as Kim Moo Young.

Taking up Kim Moo Young’s identity, he becomes a detective and his journey started to begin.

Zombie Detective will be directed by one of the co-directors of The Producers, director Shim Jae Hyun and is written by Baek Eun Jin.

    Lol! This drama sounds hilarious.

No, it is called Penthouse: War in Life.  Or War in life is just the English title. :D Imagine how silly/ disappointed is that women are fighting over so trivial things while men in other dramas are fighting over global economy/Korean economy.

You did not see it because they don`t release any news. I am sure they will release articles about cast confirmation when they already finished filming the drama like they did for another SBS drama, Good Casting. It`s hilarious. It has a broadcast date. It`s October 5.

Lol. Maybe the women are fighting about bigger things too. Fighting only about houses while men are fighting about world economy might result in backlash to the drama. Korea is focusing on gender equality now...several airing/recently aired dramas got criticized about it.

5th October?! That's the Monday-Tues slot. Seems like the rumours on the twitter is inaccurate then. According to the schedule pic, the premiere is 30th Oct, in the Friday-Saturday slot. Heh

I want a crack drama like TLE that was a mish mash of genres that somehow worked and was so much fun. But I have a feeling this will be on the serious side. Hohoho

  4. @larus have they changed the title from Penthouse to War of Life?

At first glance, the logo reminds me of The World of the Married logo, then I rechecked it...it's actually different. Lol

I don't think I saw articles about other cast confirmation. So I'm glad they have started filming. Does it have an expected broadcast date yet?

Edit. I found this broadcasting rumour (click picture). Penthouse will air after Alice on Sat-Sun in end of October to Jan. That is the prime slot for drama awards. Hahahahaha.

Fun tidbit: Alice lead is Joowon, Penthouse lead is Eugene...Baker King feelssss~~~

  5. An article about Eternal Monarch from The Korean Herald and Yonhap News. Both of these are Korea news agencies. The article might give some understanding to why the drama is recieving lukewarm/cold(?) response from K-viewers.

    ----------------

Star screenwriter struggling with lower-than-expected popularity of 'The King'

SBS' fantasy romance "The King: Eternal Monarch" was one of the most anticipated TV series for the first half of 2020 in South Korea, for the reunion of star screenwriter Kim Eun-sook and actor Lee Min-ho.

    -snip -

read full article here: http://m.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200518000644 or https://m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200518004900315
    -end snip-

In "The King," however, such characteristics have failed to impress audiences. Rather, controversies over its historic scenes have undermined the reputation of the drama.

Experts point out that the series fails to fully explain the parallel universe to the audience, who also complain of the similarity of the two different worlds -- the Korean Empire and the Republic of Korea.

"It's a romance drama, but the love between the two lead roles isn't at the forefront," cultural critic Ha Jae-geun said. "The story unfolds at a relatively slow pace and the parallel world is too complex to understand."

At the same time, some people claim that they are distracted by excessive advertising through product placement in the drama as brand names or corporate logos are displayed too often and protagonists use the advertised products too frequently.

Also, the drama has been under fire for its Japan-like styles in some scenes. People noted that turrets of wooden palace buildings of the Korean Empire have some Japanese characteristics, and a Japanese vessel looked similar to a Korean warship in a maritime battle between the Korean Empire and Japan.

The producers of the show apologized for the controversy and promised to correct the scenes.

"It's hard to find some clever, creative conversations and catchy soundtracks in 'The King,' that the writer has presented so far," Ha, the cultural critic, said. "I think the show needs to focus more on romance and speed up the pace to attract more viewers in the remaining episodes." (Yonhap)

It's the last week for TWOTM so people are probably all tuning into that. Let's just patiently wait for next week and keep our support on TKEM. :)

TWOTM is not in the same timeslot as TKEM, it overlaps just slightly but TKEM starts before TWOTM. TKEM overlaps with variety shows on both Friday and Saturday. From observation, it would be very difficult for TKEM ratings to pickup drasticly in the 2nd half. Especially with the negative buzz going around it.

With that said, keep supporting and enjoying TKEM. Imo, the drama has many flaws which many have pointed out. The 1st half unfortunately did not manage to grip viewers to stay for more.

I hope TKEM becomes more interesting and the ratings pick up or at least maintain and don't drop more. Fighting TKEM!!!

Aside from his shooting skills his combat skills is good and so is his sword skills. I saw plenty of videos of him fighting on the streets of busan with a sword. His a greater fighter but his shooting skills is not good

The info shared was based on info from the episodes. I didn't rewatch to confirm but based on the comments the last in place amongst his comrades was told during the funeral scene. The sword skill is from ep 7, he is good with the sword but not as good as JY :D.

  8. I read comments umder this video and got some info about Gon

    1) he can't shoot well (obviously)

    2) his combat skills is ranked last among his comrades

    3) JY sword skills is better than him

Lol. I find this funny. Because he's the Commander of Chief in Korea but his fighting skills are less compared to others. Maybe he's a good strategist with all that math knowledge. Hehe

    Awww...the video is restricted :(.

I notice lately SBS restrict videos. I wonder why. They didn't restrict the videos for TLE when it aired, in fact the TLE SBS clips and bts clips made me like the show more. Clips are good for promos. I noticed they also restricted Vagabond clips before, and now Eternal Monarch clips. Why SBS why? Sad. I wanna watch too. I have to wait until someone either uploads the clip on IG or reupload the full clip on YT :(.

    SBS stop restriciting videos~~ huhuhu

  10. Regarding the ratings, please be informed that dramas don't only compete with dramas. There are many other shows in the same timeslot: documentaries, news, variety shows etc.

Therefore if the ratings does not pickup in the future eps, don't be too disheartened. It doesn't necessarily mean the drama is bad or people are disliking it so much (sometimes that is the case), but imo it's mostly just viewers have other shows that interest them more or they have other stuff to do than watching TV at 9.55pm (Korea time) each Friday/Sat.

I made a mini research about ratings, because I find it interesting that drama ratings are low across the board, especially the weekday (mon-thurs) dramas. I'll share my observations in the spoiler tag below.

    Spoiler

    Preface

Writing, directing, acting, editing, chemistry, likeability, angst, emotions etc2 play a part to make a drama or variety show more engaging and viewers want to stay for more. However I noticed the quite consistent low ratings mid week. Therefore, a research was made to study this phenomenon.

    Objective
To search an explanation why current dramas have lackluster ratings, especially the midweek dramas.

    Method
Compare all show ratings: dramas, variety shows, news and more that share the same time slot.

    Results and findings
    1) dramas don't only compete with dramas, they also compete with variety shows, news and other shows.
    2) A summary of some ratings (drama vs variety show (VS) in the same timeslot):
    a) drama A got 1 % vs VS A 9%
    b) drama B 2% vs VS B 7%
    c) drama C 3% vs VS C 9%
    d) drama D 8.6% vs VS D 9.3%
    e) drama D 8.1% vs VS E 15%

    *note: drama/VS names redacted

    Notes:
    1. Variety show ratings are more flexible, ratings spike is common eg: VS E previous ep was 9ish%, this week the guest were contestants of a popular singing competition and the ratings jumped to 15%.
    2. The highest rated cable show of all time (as of writing) is a variety show that got a whooping 35% ratings. To put it into perspective, highest rated cable drama is 24%. Imo, this shows how popular VS can be.

    Conclusion
Variety/other show ratings do have an impact to drama ratings.  Drama ratings and variety show ratings should not be treated as separate lists, as it gives an impression that a drama/show is flunking without any competition.

ps: real life activities such as public holidays, people spending time with family etc might impact overall ratings as well.

    End of research.

    _________

Personal note: I do think ratings is a good way to measure how interested the general public are with a drama. It doesn't necessarily mean the drama is good or bad. Good or bad are subjective and it really depends on the individual.

For example, I enjoy EM but I do also have comments about it. Imo EM had potential to be more exciting if they didn't dilly dally and witheld information from viewers. The premise is interesting, the storytelling not so much. Combine that with questionable editing, questionable character development, some underacting, some overacting, lack of bgm/ost at some points etc2...in my opinion, it's not hard to see why viewers are not eager to watch the show in real time aka at 9.55pm (Korea time) each Friday and Saturday. They could watch it another time, it's on streaming sites anyways. Another problem with EM is the negative buzz it has in Korea. I noticed it got negative buzz from the press conference until the latest ep. Hopefully it will garner more positive buzz as the story continues and the plot thickens.

    Fighting Eternal Monarch!!!!

The dual characters should be anticipated already since the premise of the story is parallel worlds. For me, I just didn't expect so many people to be involved because of the main villain active eliminating and grooming of his army of supporters.

I was lowkey expecting a doppelganger LMH drama. I was expecting him to play both the king in Corea and the detective in Korea. And they will have funny doppelganger hijinks. Turns out I was incorrect. Heh

I hope Gon is detailed out more. For the titular character, I feel he has less to do compared to the others. Imo, writing him as calm and collected made him a tad bit boring because the other characters are more lively and have more funny interactions. An example is when Gon is in the same scene with JY and ES, Gon kinda faded in the back because the bickering doppelgangers were more fun to watch. Huhu

Shin Jae was the highlight of the episode. FIGHT ME ON THIS.

He was! Shinjae shined in this ep. And I expect him to shine more.

I do feel that Shinjae plays a vital role to move the plot. His reveal made sense, we already saw there are 2 versions of his mum, he was once rich but now poor, there's a version of sick kid Shinjae. His character is more layered than other characters.

Imo as Shinjae's character is peeled more, details of other characters will be revealed too. Since he has a somewhat childhood connection with Gon and also spent his teenage years with TE. He's like a hidden connection between TE and Gon and also Lee Rim.

    jZ9KJ5.gif

Even Gon said Shinjae is the reason why he must return to his world.

    nx9kJl.gif

I'm so curious how Luna will fit in the narrative though. I don't see Luna or TE as someone who is easy to control like the other doppelgangers.

I am a bit late watching episode 8 today. Then I laughed at myself when I pressed pause at the kimchi PPL. I was wondering why it's so special right? Since they sell small packs anyway. Then I read Jongga- the brand I normally get then I read it's kimchi bukkeum. Lol. So I Google it and goodness me no wonder I don't recognise it. It's not sold here where I stay. So guess the PPL worked since I will wonder what their bukkeum kimchi taste like.

High 5! I laughed at the multiple PPL too. And thought that kimchi looked delicious :D. Plus I lowkey think they are doing blatant PPL on purpose.

I'm suprisingly fine with Taeul's confession, even Gon's ditto reply. To me it looked like TE was just letting everything go and just saying whatever she thinks/feels(?) at that moment. She also had that long monologue about fate, seize the moment, feeling this is the right time and whatever is going on between them is shortlived. I didn't even care that they both lacked emotions during that scene. Imo, emotions between them were not required, she was just saying whats on her mind.

Again...I'm surprised that I'm just accepting the many loopholes in ep 8. I see them but I don't care enough to complain anymore. There's nothing I could do about it. As long as the plot is moving, I guess I'm a happy watcher. Hehehe

Come to me ep 9!!! Wohooo

I think the reason why almost 1st half of every episode is a flashback is because this was originally conceptualized for tvn so that means around 30 mins cut. I think they insert the lost 30 mins into the next episode as flashback. Just my two cents.

Wow! Really? It was actually made for tvN? What happened, why didn't it air on tvN? It does somewhat make sense since cable dramas do tend to have super long eps. Huhuhuhu

  15. The first half of ep 7 was a huge flashback of what happened before the hug at the end of 6. I was so miffed. They could have told it in chronological order, show them investigating, Taeul remembering Gon and then sees him at her driveway...that way the hug between Gon and Taeul would have more emotional depth. Instead of shoving it abruptly at ep 6 ending. Sigh.

Anyways...the 2nd half of ep7 was good. Gon and Taeul are working together, they now have a similar goal to capture whoever is disrupting the balance of the 2 worlds. Finally I’m convinced Gon is smart and collected, he used the time stop well and managed to convince JY that he was telling the truth. Luna appeared and she reminds me of KGE in Coin Locker Girl.

I've been saying this from the beginning that I think uncle didn't kill doppelganger Lee Gon. And kept him somewhere in Korea for whatever agenda he has. I think he plans to use doppelganger Gon to be his proxy and be ruler of Corea, since clearly uncle can't, because on record he is dead in both worlds. What uncle wants seems to be ultimate power. To do so he needs minions and proxies. In ep 7, it was shown that uncle now has power over a conglomerate in Korea. He replaced the conglomerates in Korea with doppelgangers. Let's suspend our beliefs and assume all doppelgangers uncle bring in are superb actors that can fit in into any situation lol.

All in all...Keep on this exciting track show! Don’t give us unnecessary flashbacks again. Excited for Ep 8. Luna in action! Shin Jae vs JoYoung! And Gon realizing he might exist in this parallel world. Wohhoooo~

  16. Some info about Park Ji Yeon, the actress playing the pregnant lady~~ I'm quite into K-musicals, so when I first saw the pregnant lady I thought she looks familiar. Turns out she's the leading lady in musical Rebecca . She has several kdramas under her name, but I am not familiar with her in dramaland. She was also a supporting character in Mr Sunshine.

Here is her IG account. I don't think I've seen this scene yet in the Eternal Monarch.

Here is a clip of her singing a duet from Rebecca musical~ she has an amazing voice.

    Spoiler

Ps: unrelated...but that's emperor Lee Hyuk from The Last Empress singing with her. Hahahaha

    Another clip of her singing~~

As an international viewer, I don't have any complaints about history because unlike Korean viewers and/or history lovers....I don't know any Korean history to begin with. I do have comments for other stuff like plot transitions, inconsistent flashbacks, lack of OST etc2 though.

More comments about historical inaccuracies and knetz reaction under tab..

    Spoiler

I find its understandable for knetz to nitpick on historical inaccuracies. Korea and Japan share so much history, and not all of them are pretty and rosy. Korean citizens in general are very nationalist, they can even make their goverment listen to their voices.

The director/editor/writer/crew (basicly everyone involved with the production) should have been aware of the historical inconsistencies/inaccuracies aka did more research. To international viewers, it may look insignificant but to Korean viewers or history lovers these small details can ruin their enjoyment. Let them voice out their opinions. Hopefully the production team can be more careful with future episodes.

Eternal Monarch is not the only drama that receives complaints like these. Lots of other dramas recieved complaints too. It's just international media/translation sites sometimes don't pick up complaints for other dramas.

I'm enjoying this drama my own way. I don't see the hidden details many of you here see. I'm also not that enthusiastic to dig up all the hidden clues this drama has. But nontheless I'm excited for ep 7!!
