    Notwithstanding the record 40.9 percent rating that cliffhanger scene in Episode 11 of “Descendants of the Sun” got on Wednesday, chances of having a second season for the blockbuster Korean drama are slim.

    Lee Eung-bok, one of the people who created the 16-episode drama, aired simultaneously over KBS 2TV In South Korea and video platform iQiyi in China, admitted it would be nice to have a second season but is not sure of the possibility. Among the reasons that Lee cited which makes a Season 2 difficult are to keep all the members of the main cast who would have difficult schedules to coordinate.

     

    That’s because the current season was pre-produced, so everyone’s schedule was freed to shoot the 16 episodes. Being pre-produced is one element which contributed to the success of the drama, so clearing again everyone’s schedule to shoot for a second season would be a nightmare for the production staff.

    Lee shared, “The shooting in Greece alone took a month. We needed three takes to create the earthquake scenes, had to construct a large-scale set on Mount Taebaek and constantly sought permission from the South Korean military to use their equipment and locations.”

    Another reason is Season 2 would need two writers and again, and it would be difficult to find them again, Lee pointed out, reported Yonhap. It seems fans of “Descendants of the Sun” would really have to just content themselves with the three-day special to air on April 20 to 22.

    It took the producers of “Descendants of the Sun” six months to film the whole season and complete the post-production. The producers then submitted it to the Chinese censors for review.

    Lee admitted that he and production partner Bae Kyung-soo did not anticipate that “Descendants of the Sun” would become a megahit across Asia. He gave credit to the well-written script and the acting of lead stars Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo whom he disclosed were not the production’s first choice for the main roles.

    It is not just the show that is logging record ratings but also the soundtrack which sold more than 20,000 copies last week and dominated domestic online music charts. An OST album that reached the 20,000 mark is considered now an achievement in South Korean music market because of the competition from online streaming and digital downloads.

    Does this confirm that the 4 leads will not die in the finale, as the producer is indicating that the schedules of the actors would be 

    difficult to get together. For  a season 2.  Therefore, if he was able to get cast.again they would do a sequel.

    :) I missed the 15 mins  commercials prior to the broadcast when live streaming ..haha

    We are blessed with DOTS, best kissing scene of all time in KDrama with episode 9 truck scene and episode 12 hugging scene.

    @mulder9999 I think they make the large bucks from syndication and licensing. Besides that, around 10 minutes before the air time is solely dedicated to advertisements. All the product placements in the drama is also considered advertisements. 

    EDIT: But then again, KBS is a public TV station, it's also funded by the South Korean government.

    even though I can't understand Korean, can't wait for the engsub to be out,  so watching it live from Korea KBS2 via satellite feed.

    since I rewatch  each episode with engsub anyway

    Just wondering how's KBS making money from this series if there are no commercial breaks during its run?

    is it only by selling it overseas they make profit?

    in Hong Kong or Australia commercial networks sell advertising slots to make money..how's KBS going to recoup costs and make profit if no ads are shown?

     

    I'm watching via tvpad4 which live streams all Korean channels...KBS2 direct from Korea..

    i was surprised no ads came up,. I normally watch online and wait for the English subs, 

    but couldn't  wait for episode 12 so took a direct feed on KBS2  and surprised no ads.

    Yes, ep 2 could have ended the whole series everyone happy.....we could then have a sequel later..

    but now, 4 episodes to go...what going to happen?   And if the finale ends with sad ending, everyone will riot...

    And I'm gonna need a scene were he inspects her scar. 

     

    This is what makes the drama so interesting, the scriptwriter is very clever in weaving in past scenes with future scenarios.

    rewatching the entire series when completed will bring different perspective of each of the characters.

    I 'be watched the whole series twice now, and episode 9 & 12 at least 5 times each....

    i'm  more or less convinced that it's not going to be a fairytale ending..

    had MKY & SJK broke up in episode 12' then I would be inclined for a happy ending..as 4 episodes would be enough to get them back together.  But since they still a couple in ep 12 , then the likelyhood of a tragic ending is higher to tug the heart strings and make it a KDrama.

    The white pebble is significant now as KMY will return to URK , whether alone or not to be determined.

    Also Argus words about SJK may prove to haunting true. 'He may never come back'

    Also the US army captain says to SJK, 'stay alive, live well' this may have opposite effect.

    obviously as a fan a happy ending would be great, but a sad ending will make the series have a lasting effect and memory of Captain SJK.

    Watched ep 12 again for the 5th time, how cool was General Yoon and the President....

    also Kim Ji Won in ep 11 and 12 has brought out her character more...more 3 dimensional than in the earlier episodes.  She came a 

    across as spoilt brat  and not likable in the early episodes... She actually growing you now...she had a great scene when she was sick and called her father.... Also good was the chicken soup scene..

    both couples interaction is flowing so naturally now on screen... But looks like some bumpy road ahead in the next 4 episodes left.

      I think KMY would have known that the card would have been used since they in the chopper together..

    plus  KMY already back in Korea now, so that card wouldn't be  useful in Korea I think..

    I have this bad and resigned feeling for the next episode.. I think the YMJ/SDY will hve the worst outcome.. The toughest jobs goes to sergeant major seo! And the most heartwrenching scenes too... I wish YMJ and SDY will really overcome all odds and last! Totally in love with their love story.

    JinGoo said the ending will be 'refreshing' in an interview. The other time I heard the word refreshing used to describe a plot, it turned out really sad!! Different from expectations, refreshing, but totally heartbreaking :confounded:

     

    I think the ending is going to be different from what everyone is expecting, I don't think it's going to happy ever after.

    i think the pebble is going to be the link to the ending..as YSJ says at the end of episode 12 when gives the pebble to KMY 

    "now its your turn to see if it works". It's not  going to be a smooth ride towards the end.imo.

Dr Kang she is stronger smarter, braver, what a change !! SJK is a fabulous actor, shout out to the writers and his acting when he was crying for the lost of is comrade I was crying with him like a baby. I watched this episode 3 times and I don't think I can't handle the pain :bawling:

     

    That was a great scene with YSJ showing his vulnerable sensitive side, but what was even better was KMY through her imagination to cover his eyes so that he could forget that he took out his friend argus...to erase this memory just like he shielded her eyes from shooting argus telling her to forget this act..

    both need to forget to move on...

    the scene is quite poetic ....the writers and actors have brought the whole series to a level where each scene to brought to life onscreen..

    its truly a magical journey they have given us, best KDrama ever....
