I'm not fluent in Cantonese and just needed some help. What are the meaning of some of these Chinese characters? Some are slangs, but not sure about the meanings though.
醜八怪 (ugly eight monster) - It means "a very ugly person" right?
打氣 (hit air)
離家出走 - It means "to leave the family"?
見死不救 (see die, don't save)
鬼馬 (ghost horse)
縮頭龜 (withdraw head turtle)
死無全屍 (die not whole body)
應有盡有
永不分離 - Does it mean "never separate"?
眼光 (eye bright)
敬酒唔飲飲罰酒
人死不能復生 - I think this one means "when a person dies, he/she cannot come back to life". Correct me if I'm wrong.
-
^Thank you soooooooo much for the translations! I really appreciate it.
-
I can read the Chinese characters, but I don't know the meaning of them. I watch a lot of TVB series and I see actors and actresses use these words. I just wish that they have English subtitles along with Chinese subtitles in TVB series. It will be so much easier for me.
Does anybody know the meaning of these Chinese characters? Your help is appreciated.

don't know all of them, and some of them...i think other would be better at explaining, but...
1. 豈有此理 - (i tend to see this used in historical dramas more than anything, but it can still be used today) people use this when they're angry at someone and think that that person has done or said something ridiculous. In short, it means "Outrageous!" or "Absurd!"
I hope someone can provide a more literal and also a more accurate translation though.
3. 福氣 - Literally, it means an air of fortune/happiness/bliss. Someone who has found a good spouse, someone who lives to an old age and has a big and happy family--people with things like these would be described to have 福氣. Doing well on an exam, finding ten dollars on the ground--these are things that would not relate to this kind of fortune/happiness. Chinese tend to describe fortune in terms of 氣 / air I think because, perhaps, we see people as breathing or living in their luck...good or bad? haha, not quite sure about that though.
4. 看熱鬧 - A hard phrase to describe in English, 熱鬧 is a positive adjective describing a kind of bustling, exciting atmosphere--and this atmosphere stems a lot from there being a huge crowd of people. For example, since I'm from a quiet, sparsely populated suburban area in the U.S., when I go to Hong Kong where I see a huge number of people hurrying to and from different places, and if I enjoy that type of atmosphere, I can describe that place as being very 熱鬧. Or if you go to street fair/celebration to have fun, and part of it comes from there being many people just as excited to be there as you, then the street fair is also very 熱鬧.
看 means to watch/look. So 看熱鬧 means literally to go and look at the 熱鬧. In other words, 看熱鬧 means to go participate in whatever activity/event that crowds of people are participating in (and it's either fun, exciting, or full of energy/life).
5. 羨慕 - to envy, to admire a person - correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think you can use this verb on anyone or thing but a human being
(not equivalent to jealous, since 羨慕 does not have any bad intentions or feelings behind it)
8. 堅持 - to persist, to be determined
10. 莫名奇妙 - spontaneous, random, out of nowhere/out of the blue (usually to describe a person)
11. 執著 - it's hard to explained, but if you say is person is 執著, then that person tends to always not be able to let go of certain matters. they're always obsessing over a matter or situation, and, hence, in a sense, very stubborn. It's not a positive adjective.
12. 固執 - stubborn, obstinate, willful (definitely not a positive adjective either)
13. 環境 - environment (for example, like the environment in which someone grew up, or the environment in which you go to school), it can also mean physical environment; and, it can also mean situation (for example, police wondering if it's safe to go into a place might ask about the 環境 inside that place; or you can ask about someone's financial situation)
14. 透明 - clear, invisible (ie, water is clear; plastic is clear/see-through; she purposely treats me as though i'm clear/invisible--as though she can't see me; i feel invisible)
i'm pretty sure about these ones, but if someone can think of even better ways to explain them...please do so. ^^
Also, if you want it romanized, please ask. I know the ones I translated in Cantonese and only some in Mandarin, so someone else would probably be better at doing this.
Thanks a lot for the translations! I really appreciate your effort in helping me translating Chinese characters.
Thanks Aki_ and Aziraphale for helping me also.

@DingDonggg : I already suspended your account for 2 weeks for posting racist comments about the Chinese race. Why must you create another account and bash Chinese women? I can see your IP and your other accounts, you know.
