  1. Hmmm... saw these vids of JH in this boxing event- and he came out as part of the boxer's entourage... Does that mean that JH actually part of the boxer's training team? Cause it didn't look like he was there as a celebrity or to watch the match

SO, what next- JH brushing his teeth? 🙃 Seriously, I adore him, but there are ways to convey reality without having to actually watch every second of it... All he had to do was  double or tripple the speed of it! And he should know that by now we know his every day workout routine...

I do wonder what comments he received that compelled him to add this comment. :) It shows that there are people around him capable of telling him off, but appearantly they weren't convincing or strong enough to make him understand that that video wasn't good...

  2. BTW, saw this post yesterday, mentioning JH as if he will participate in the next Busan film festival, only I couldn't find any mention of that anywhere else... That's the frustration with JH's name- there a few actors with similar names, so it's easy to make a mistake-

This is what I worried about 😅 He really thinks that what he's obsessed with, everyone are obsessed with! If he's gonna be vloging, he needs someone who has the guts to dissagree with him and to edit him. Oh, well... It's just the first vid, I hope he will learn fast

"It's more influential than Netflix dramas"...Venice Invited VR Film 'Apartment'

Director Chae Soo-eung, who was invited to the immersive competition section of the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which will open on Friday (local time) with the interactive VR film "Apartment: Ripley's World," said, "As it is an unfamiliar form of film, I will receive a lot of criticism." He explained that it is a growing pain for new possibilities for movies in the era of new media. Photo by Aria Studio

"It is the old way to induce empathy with one-way authorism. Younger generations can empathize only when they approach it through hands-on storytelling."

This is the words of director Chae Soo-eung (42), who was invited to the Immersive (Immersive) competition section of the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which will open on the 28th in Lido Island, Italy, with the VR (virtual reality) science fiction film "Apartment: Ripley's World (hereinafter referred to as "Apartment").

"Apartment" is the only Korean film to be invited to the official category of this year's Venice Film Festival. Chae is the second Korean film director to be invited after winning the best VR experience award in the same category in 2018 for his VR short animation "Buddy VR." The VR expansion category of the Venice Film Festival, which was established in 2017, has changed its name to the immersive category that covers all XR works in 2022.

"The Apartment" is an interactive film in which visitors participate in the investigation of a detective (Jang Hyuk) in 2080. In the future when the memory preservation system "mind upload" technology has been commercialized, it is necessary to access the memory data of a brain-dead boy who is the only witness to the unsolved murder that occurred in 2009 to look back at the scene and find out the truth.

The movie "Apartment: Ripley's World" is an interactive work in which a detective (Jang Hyuk, center) who accesses distorted memory data of a brain-dead boy to find clues to a long-term murder case in 2080 is involved directly through VR experience and communication with a Generative AI.

At each screening, 15 to 25 audiences watch the 2D movie, which is about 30 minutes long, and one selected from the audience personally experiences the situation through a VR device. At the instruction of a Generative AI (artificial intelligence) actor who appeared on the screen, the reactions left by 2D audiences affect the mission performance of VR experiences.

After watching the movie, the audience talked and put together a story puzzle. The accumulated audience experience data affects the development of the story at the next screening time. The purpose of this work is to share this group experience. At this year's Venice Film Festival, a booth consisting of spaces where people can watch 2D and VR versions will be set up to be screened for six times every day during the festival.

The director once again broke down the theater boundaries and expanded the cinematic experience through the 3D and visual special effects (VFX) producer of the movie "Mr. Go" (2013), the general manager of VFX for "Enemy Girl 3" (2018), and directing the VR invitation film "White Rabbit" (2018) at the Cannes International Film Festival.

In a phone call with this newspaper on the 21st, he cited the recent rapid rise of audience-participating immersive performances as a cultural phenomenon that influenced the production of "apartments."

"VRChat videos have more impact than Netflix's 100 billion drama"

VR Chat is a VR-based metaverse community space where users can create and enjoy real-time games, chatting, drawing, sculpture, music, and performances using avatars that express their individuality. It is also attracting attention as broadcast content of streamers and creators around the world.

Director Chae said, "If the existing metaverse platform was nothing more than a device to visually show communication, VRChat has created an opportunity to communicate and empathize emotionally," adding, "As real-time communication takes place through streaming comments, VRChat videos have a much stronger impact than Netflix dramas with production costs of 100 billion won online."

"I thought a new movie should act as a medium in this era," he said, adding, "We tried to organize real-time memory data and communicate with each other by adding a Generative AI."

"Unfamiliar challenge in Venice, growing pains to survive even if criticized"

The audience in "Apartment: Ripley's World" communicates with a Generative AI who is set as a high-performance AI robot nurse through voice communication and digs out the truth of the past through the memory data of the boy, which is a mixture of lies and distortions. The photo shows the scene of the incident in the boy's memory.

Online, the culture of sharing reviews in real-time comments while watching movies, dramas, and game content together has become popular. "Recreation videos" that uniquely enjoy or reinterpret existing works, such as interpretation and reaction to movies and dramas, are also popular.

Director Chae said, "The re-creation has become a grammar in online social experiences," adding, "We wanted to revive the energy that people communicate and enjoy through movies in a new format through 'Apartment'. The final completion of this work is achieved when the audience talks to each other after the movie is over."

"Apartment: Ripley's World" (pictured) consists of two-dimensional video clips and VR experience, each of which includes a conversation process in which audiences put their heads together and put together a story puzzle.

This intention of directing is also in line with the purpose of the Venice Film Festival's immersive sector, which is expanding its scope to experiments on media genres. "If the film format has been made with film-based grammar for the past 120 years, the film content in the Internet environment should have different viability than before," he said. "I'm happy to present my challenge work in Venice."

"I am determined to be beaten harshly as it is my first time to show this work. It is a pain in growth that is necessary for the survival of my work."

So it is 30 minutes of a regular movie and then 20 minutes or so of what is essentially a game, only one person gets to play and the rest watch, if I understood correctly.

What is interesting from JH's side is that he probably had to film each scene of the last 20 minutes in several different ways to allow for the "player's" choice.

  5. I asked the person who posted where is the filming happening, and they said in England! So JH is in Europe right now. If this is true it's more than reasonable that JH will be attending his movie's premiere in Italy next week. Also- Ki seop was in Italy lasy week(?), so I wonder if they will be together

Director Chae Soo-eung's 'Apartment: Ripley's World' Officially Invited to Venice Film Festival

[Monday Newspaper = Reporter Chaeyoon Jeong] Production company Aria Studio announced on the 19th that the film 'Apartment: Talented Mr. Ripley's World' was officially invited to the 81st Venice International Film Festival's Immersive Competition section and released an international poster to commemorate the occasion.

'Apartment: Ripley's World' is an interactive thriller film set in 2080, when the memory preservation system 'Mind Upload' has become commercialized, about a detective who tries to find clues by entering the memories of a brain-dead boy who is the sole witness to an unsolved murder case that occurred in 2009, and digs up the truth behind the boy's distorted memories suffering from 'Ripley Syndrome'.

The released poster shows the back of a character who goes into the memories of a brain-dead boy who is the sole witness to a murder case that occurred in an apartment in the past.

'Apartment: Ripley's World' is an AI interactive film designed to allow the audience to enter the boy's memories to find the real culprit and choose the truth. The fact that the mysterious person appearing on the poster can be any audience member makes it even more interesting.

'Apartment: Talented Mr. Ripley' is the second invitation to the Venice International Film Festival by director Chae Soo-eung, following his win for Best VR Experience, the top award in the Immersive Competition category, for 'Buddy VR' in 2018. It is also receiving a lot of attention as the only Korean film among the 26 entries in the Immersive Competition category this year.

Meanwhile, the film 'Apartment: Talented Mr. Ripley' will be premiered to audiences around the world at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which will be held from August 28th.

Korean film 'In the Realm of Ripley' to compete in Venice's immersive section

"In the Realm of Ripley" by Korean director Chae Soo-eung, also known as Chuck Chae, has been selected to compete in the immersive section of this year's Venice Film Festival.

The film is one of 64 projects from 25 countries to be featured in the Venice Immersive Section at the 81st edition of the renowned festival, scheduled for Aug. 28 to Sept. 7, according to the organizer's official website Friday.

Starring Jang Hyuk, Moon Joo-yeon and Song Jae-hee, the interactive film is set in 2080, when memory storage technology is commonplace. It follows a detective who enters the brain of a brain-dead boy, the sole witness to a murder.

"Audiences will discover that media is not simply a vessel for storytelling, but an essential part of the experience, uncovering deeper truths hidden within it," production company Aria Studio quoted the director as saying.

The Immersive section, established in 2017, showcases outstanding "immersive arts and media," encompassing various forms of creative expression in virtual, mixed and extended reality.

This is not Chae's first success in Venice. In 2018, his short animated film "Buddy VR" won the Best Virtual Reality Experience award at the festival's 75th edition. (Yonhap)

The premise sounds cool, but it also reminds of a JLo movie, The Cell , and I really hope it's nothing like that. From what I understood it was really bad... I do wonder about the immersive part- does that mean that the audience will be able to influence the detective's decisions? Like a computer game?

    Hi everyone!

I've been a fan of Jang Hyuk since Fated to Love You. I've watched almost all of his dramas since then (even the old ones - Thank You, Robbers, Midas etc.). My favorite of his will always be Money Flower and Beautiful Mind, least favorite is Wok of Love (not because he is not the lead. The story is not that good as a whole even though the writer wrote Miss Korea, one of my all time favorites).

Glad I finally found a forum where I can express how much I adore JH. I guess I just miss him in dramas because there has been no casting news lately.

Thanks to this forum, I can see the latest updates about him. 🙂

Glad this thread is so active by the way.

Welcome @ChoJiJangKim!!:Pandabulous: You are indeed at the right place for discussion of everything JH :) We're usually more lively, but since JH hasn't had a new project in a awhile, we're a bit less active...

    :hotinhere2:

I'm sure as soon as news come in, we'll be back with gusto!

  10. Looks like  JH is going to appear in the Amazing saturday show  next week.

This week I'm seeing JNR was the guest, and JH joined them at the end, so I guess they are going to again do the show together next week. :)

Edit: I was wrong. No JNR next week
