For me there was no triangle. For a love triangle to be compelling, there should be some reciprocity or even clear sign of a possibility of a loveline switch.

But at least in my view, DM was clearly into DS only from the start to the end. Never wavered even when the letter lie was exposed, and the lie exposure only put her in a state of hurt and confusion as to whether she loved the DS in the letters (which was a persona that the teen JP expressed but was nothing like the JP of the present), or whether she love DS as-is. Her confusion then was not whether she like JP or DS.  It was just DS version 1 or DS version 2.

So I watched the drama with a clarity that if JP did fall in love with DM, it was one-sided all the way and I was never bothered by those unrequited feelings.  Basically I rooted for Dodal from the moment DS walked into the networking party to meet DM for the first time.

I guess, that made a lot of difference in terms of enjoyment of the drama.

So yes, Start Up is not perfect.. the letters lie dragged too long and it would have been better if the time jump happened at least 1 episode earlier so that there are more time devoted to IJ and how DM grew into a competent CEO in 3 years and how DS grew his wings in 2STO.  I wanted to see more business aspects on how a Start Up secure revenue and investments etc.

Still PHR wrote a well paced story that is full of heart and with many details coming full circle.

Easily one of the best dramas of 2020 for me, and certainly ranks amongst the top in terms of satisfying ending.

I agree with you on this. That Dalmi wasn’t ever drawn to the real JP in the first place. She WAS drawn to the Dosan-in-the-letters. I didn’t think JP fell in love with DM either, at least not till Dosan came along. He said it himself, for 15 years he didn’t look for her but Dosan did after he read the letters.

While the letter writing gave him comfort, he didn’t fall in love with Dalmi then either. There was hardly any indication they have a real contact then. The real connection was when Dosan came into the picture. Dosan sought out the girl in the letters more than JP did. That made JP competitive and it triggered JP to take action.

  2. Let’s remember that we are not writers of this drama, the question to ask is what is the writer trying to tell us? What is the message to be conveyed through these characters?

The writer has made JP appeal so much to all of us, especially his back story that we all felt for his difficult beginnings. Dosan’s back story only came up much later. I emphasise with JP because it felt like Dosan stole what could have been his. He went to look for grandma because he felt like he wanted to pay her back. I guess that is his ‘fate’ in this story, to pay her back by finding Dosan and inevitably helping Dalmi find her love. Unfortunately, he didn’t realise that he was falling for her.

JP will not be endgame. In episode 1 the cherry blossom petal flew from the old corn dog shop all the way to Seoul, past JP, to Samsan Tech office & fell on Dosan’s head, that was a clear sign that linked Dalmi & Dosan. JP was like a cupid, or middleman. But i guess cupid fell in love with the one he was destined to matchmake.

Did he deserve her? Well....it would have been nice if he fought for her, and wanted her more. I found him lacking on that part and he did not love and fight for his love for Dalmi as hard as Dosan did. JP is competitive though! He goes for Dalmi when Dosan says something that triggers him.

If Dosan didn’t turn back and talk to Dalmi about the map and getting lost which started a connection between them, would JP pursue Dalmi instead? I doubt so.

I just want to clarify the rumour that this project was offered to another actor and rejected. The truth is the very actor xxx was offered 2nd male lead role (HH) and he didn’t accepted. His agency published a rather vague news hehe. It was stated in the CJ company’s financial form, when the project was initiated, Actor list as park Bogum, xxx and park so dam.

The writer has also said that this project was written for BOGUM.

Thanks for clarifying this. The whole show felt like the story of Park Bo Gum's career, in a way. I mean, he went to military service like HJ will eventually in the story. The stories are fictional but so many parts feel like him in reality.

Any this is how news can alter out perspective...so they  aren't always too truthful either, making click baits to capture attention.

Why were those brand suing him for breach of contract? Is it because of his relationship with someone? I really don’t understand why entertainment industry has that kind of perception that having a intimate relationship with someone can make your career miserable? Why? What’s the point? :expressionless:

I am wondering if the breach of contract thing is a much later part where he eventually quit acting altogether, to save what is really more important, the people he love. What I find really confusing about this drama is the jumping back and forth and withholding a lot of information to create that suspense. Did I miss something out but don't remember the "I will not be your emotional outlet" phrase said in ep.14 but was played in the preview.

It is a sad life to be a celebrity when your private life 'belongs' to the public and you are punished for doing things normal people do. So many korean actors/actress marry much later in life or do not at all and I wonder if the celebrity culture has an impact on that. (It seems opposite in the western world though)

Hmm.. Even tho that kind of situation was not really unexpected for me, but I was still quite shocked by how JH said it. Because she said "I love you. Let's break up." And not "Do you think it's better if we break up?" Then it feels like she was not really hesitated. As if she was sure that this is the best option. I don't know how to feel about this.

And it also made me feel like I'm missing something. Because I thought, both HJ and even JH herself were ready if they're forced to announce their relationship to public. If I'm not mistaken, when the news about Charlie Jung commited suicide revealed for the first time, and HJ was suspected to be his boyfriend, the manager unnie MJ asked JH about the possibility to reveal their relationship to public, and that time, JH agreed to that idea, saying "I'll do anything if it can help HJ."

So why does it seems like she had a change of mind now?

Well, we don't know what the reporter said to JH yet, anyway. And those words about breach of contract made by HJ was kinda weird, too. I don't think this kind of scandal is big enough to be considered breach of contract and for HJ to pay a penalty because of that.

I guess we'll have to wait for next episode for a clear explanation. It's only 2 episodes left. A lot of stuff are still confusing right now, but I still believe they can wrap this up with a happy ending. Even tho I'm not sure for HH's case, at this point

I believe MJ has a part in making JH change her mind. Maybe the revelation of their r/s might cause something worse and MJ convinced her so?
JH saying "I love you. Let's break up." is like a self-sacrificing statement. She has made up her mind that breaking up is the better thing to do, and a way that she can give love to HJ, as a contrast to always 'receiving love' that she felt bad about. Sometimes we find these characters who think that their sacrifice is a way to love when it actually hurts the other party more, like in this case for HJ.

If she has asked him "Do you think it's better if we break up?" it would have opened a conversation to help her hear him out. I guess she didn't because she would know that HJ would convince her out of it, and the severity of the situation means she cannot be swayed about this decision. HJ is like the voice of a sage....so much wisdom...still he can't escape the problems in life.

  5. "Jeong-Ha says : I don't want to be your emotional outlet anymore..."

This was said in the preview for tomorrow's episode. I think JH is saying that to HH. Cos HH keeps looking for her when he is upset. JH has always been clear about her boundaries with HH, though she admitted that she shouldn't have called him to send her that day. That was crossing the line. She is a smart girl but in a tricky situation.

Also, I feel like JH is losing her love for HJ. She is always being considerate of his schedule. Or she feels like she shouldn't impose on him to the point that HH is becoming an easy temptation. This is so complicated. I don't understand what she means when she talks about happiness for a while. It feels like she doesn't see a r/s as a long term one and is ready to fly when difficulties rise or is she too independent? I hope they overcome all this!

Nonetheless, I love how they portray the reality of celebrities, and this gives a picture of what could be happening when we read news about celeb couples breaking up because of their busy schedule.

I felt that SHJ  isn't giving priority to his relationship with JH/ that he has taken it fr granted

    1. Only  when jinwu asked him what JH would think abt his ex-gf interview, SHJ thought abt it n called JH

    2. Also Jinwu reminded SHJ wouldn't it be better for him to see his gf now than n his friends.. given the situation

    3. Shj is going overseas but JH didn't know n even tried calling him.. it seems to me that SHJ is a very private person but wouldn't someone tell his gf atleast by text if they r going overseas? ( maybe next week will throw some light on this)

    4. SHJ wants to work all the time as he loves it but does he realize that he doesn't have time fr his gf? He keeps telling thst he loves his work but surely he need not pack his schedule so tightly right.. even Minjae tells him to take a break? So isn't he giving more priority to work ?Or Is this how the industry works?

5.SHJ seems oblivious to JHs feelings n what she is going through.. from her expressions n reactions.. wouldn't he wonder why she isn't asking abt rumors n other things!!. i guess its JHs fault as well fr not being open in the relationship

I guess these r deliberate to show that neither of them r perfect n are normal ppl like us.. each with their own flaws..

All throughout I felt HJ was too perfect and finally in episode 12 finally there was a flaw in our beloved character. Not that I want it but still necessary to see growth in him. This is what fame can do to one, the crazy schedule and the lack of time to think might have caused him to put his r/s in the backseat. I'm sure his heart for her didn't change but external things can throw a spanner in a r/s.

JH said earlier to take it slow. Then again, I felt HJ should fight for her more, protect her more by expressing it to her. They have a strong trust connection, the way the looked at each other before the filming when JH was tagging along was a sign of a couple who trusted and knew each other well.

The seemingly lack of communication in their r/s is something that didn't sit well with me. Or maybe they just didn't show how close they are? Going overseas is a big thing even if it happens frequently, so if they are dating, she would probably at least know it?

JH's character gives me the impression that she is rather closed but I think because of HJ she is growing to open her heart and that is also probably why she is feeling hurt.

  7. Are there forums in other places? I thought the threads here seem to move a lot more slowly compared to last time.

I love theswoonnetflix on instagram. They do nice comparisons over there.

Also, anyone guessing who is the one taking the photos of HyeJun? I think that part when he entered Jeongha's house after his filming. Who do you think sent for it? The reporter or Tae-Su from A-June entertainment?

Btw I love how he so clearly drew the line between himself and Ji-A....that's the way to just clearly respectfully reject a clingy ex-gf.

  8. I also feel so frustrated with all of you wrt DY’s situation. Her job application as task support team stated that “age and educational background was irrelevant” but it seems not so. I felt it is so unfair that someone who had such good credentials are not allowed to enter the workforce anymore, as if it is wrong or discouraged to take a break to go invest time on your own children. Honestly what is this world valuing these days? In the next episode, it seems like DY will resign, I’m guessing partly also because she doesn’t want to implicate EH, and she acknowledges that she has not been truthful in revealing all her qualifications, granted it is out of desperation.
I see a theme in INTEGRITY here and the struggle to have that, our characters are not perfect:

    - I like how EH doesn’t abuse his power to help DY totally with the competitions,

    - or that DY acknowledges her less than truthful application is wrong and she should pack up even though she has done good work

    - or Ms.Go taking DY’s idea as her own and not acknowledging it but the line is so gray here also...

(I can’t think of anymore for now)

Yet having integrity doesn’t come easy. It is always easier to lie. Sometimes truth is hard to keep like what’s happening with author Kang...which is also the question of whether was it right to do so or not? These are hard questions to ponder upon and we get to glimpse that internal struggle of the characters in this drama.
