Now I realize. Doesn't usually Empress Dowager call herself as 'Ajia'? Just like how Emperor call himself 'Zhen' and Empress and 'Bengong'. But in this drama, Empress Dowager didn't call herself as Ajia right? Is this because Qing dynasty didn't apply this type rule of how they call themselves? As I watch other dramas, imperial children call Emperor as Fuhuang but in Yanxi, they called QL as Huangama. Does anyone know?

    From this post:

I read that aijia is actually not historically accurate, although Zhen Huan and Ruyi both used it.

    Quote

There is no written record of any empress dowager of the Qing dynasty calling herself aijia 哀家 as commonly seen in the media.

And "ama" is the Manchu word for father, so Qing dynasty dramas use this term instead of Fuhuang, even though there is also no written record of it being used.

I think this revenge things was used too repetitively, i understand when she went as a palace maid to investigate and get revenge for her sister. And now she wanted to get revenge for the Empress by being concubine and slept with the Emperor while she didn’t like the Emperor. I just think it’s quite a stretch.

YL is very smart, should’t she first try to find another way which not include sacrificing herself.

I think of the show as a two-part revenge story. The first as revenge for her sister, the second for Fuca. Or, like Cedric puts it, seeking justice for both those characters. Imo, it does make sense for Yingluo to continually (well, twice) do this, because that's her personality. She seeks justice for those she believes have been wronged and she doesn't stop until she sees it through. She feels very strongly about people and would absolutely sacrifice herself if she needed to.

And secondly, I really feel frustrated that they left out the part on whether or not Yingluo came to know the truth over the whole thing - that Qianlong never slept with Er Qing, never was her lover (as Er Qing claimed so) and the child was not his. Yingluo brought up Er Qing and her so-called affair with Qianlong that causing Fuca's death when they had the big argument and subsequent falling out. So I find it impossible for Yingluo to easily forgive QL without knowing the truth even when she had already fallen in love with him at that time.

I agree! In the last part of the show, they rushed things so much that we never got really important scenes (even minus all the Chen Bi stuff they cut which I have no strong feelings about) like a scene where they cleared this up. I am happy to assume that they DID talk about this stuff because it would be a clear block in Yingluo's mind about going further with Qianlong, so of course they would've had to talk about it, but it would've been nice to SEE that.

I thought it to be the Empress Dowager who wanted WYL to leave the Forbidden City quickly together for the Sunmer Palace, hence those eunuchs who came to  pack and carry away the essentials. She wanted to leave while QL was busy talking to that old official whom Empress Dowager had asked to explain the truth about QL’s birth mother’s death. Her act of leaving would then cause QL to be very guilty for doubting and hurting Empress Dowager that way, which was really her ploy.

Wow, I really need to rewatch this episode then. I always thought that was QL getting upset about her interfering earlier (with the Empress Dowager's story) and did that and that's when ED took her along with her. I may have misremembered, sorry!

@believed btw what did Qianlong take away from Yanxi Palace? Cause in ep 64 when Yingluo was talking to the step-empress, she mentioned that all the decorations and furnitures in Yanxi Palace are all Qianlongs favorite things (those things mustve been stolen from Yangin Palace or given by Qianlong himself)

I'm not sure -- I'd have to watch that again, I just have the memory of servants coming in to take things and Zhen Zhu and Xiao Quan Zi trying to stop them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please! Presumably, it would be things that he's gifted her?

  6. Some little QL/YL moments that I love:

    - (always) when QL says that there's no way YL could've killed Consort Chun because she would rather let her live longer to make her suffer more + when he says he knew YL wouldn't have harmed Shun Pin out of rage (aka whenever he shows he knows her)

    - in 57? when YL thinks she's made her move to win him back (through Qing Pin and the Empress Dowager's story) but then she finds that all her stuff in Yanxi Palace is being taken away because he was actually mad about it (aka one of the only times YL doesn't have the upper hand in their relationship; I love this small moment because it's the first time, I think, that she's had to deal with not knowing how to deal with QL, which she definitely needed going into the last stretch of the show)

    - In 49 when QL lists off all the things YL has taken from YXD which shows 1) how honestly daring she is but mostly 2) how he lets her get away with SO much and I love that

Maybe not Qianlong who gave the Gulun Rank to Hejing, probably Jiaqing Emperor did that? Like how Jiaqing  make his younger brother, Yonglin 1st rank prince. Yonglin was given second rank prince by QL. After QL death, Jiaqing make him a first rank prince.

Presumably they would've been titled before/when they got married and that happened when Qianlong was still alive.

  8. Does anyone know why Consort Ling's first daughter (Princess Hejing) was made a First Rank Princess (Gulun Gongzhu), which is usually reserved for daughters of the Empress (for example, Fuca's only surviving daughter was Princess Hejing (different jing character) of the First Rank), while her second daughter (Princess Heke) was made a Second Rank Princess (Heshuo Gongzhu), reserved for daughters of consorts & concubines?

It doesn't really matter, but I was curious!

I know that Qianlong's last daughter (Hexiao) was also made a Gulun Gongzhu despite not being born of an Empress, but she was his favorite daughter, so I understand that aspect.

    @Cedric Ong maybe?

  9. One of my favorite things that they develop through the show is how well QL knows YL (and later on, YL with QL).

    • When he says that he knew she didn't kill Consort Chun because she would rather let her live to make her suffer longer
    • When he says that they shouldn't tell YL the real reason why MY died because if she didn't know then, she'll have realized it now (he really holds her intelligence in high regard and I love that)
    • When he says that YL wouldn't hurt someone (in this case, Shun Pin) out of anger
    • When he says that YL told him the wrong painting was the fake because she didn't want him to get too excited and put all his stamps on it
    • When he says that he knows why she sent her daughters to live with the Empress Dowager
    • (There might be more but I'm blanking on them, but please add them if you think of any!)

It's just sweet to see how much he picks up from her and pays attention to her, esp when everyone else completely miscalculates and misunderstands her. (Plus, it's so nice to see how much has changed from his super wrong ideas about her at the beginning of the show.)

Oh and I forgot to say that another thing I love about these moments is how genuinely shocked Yingluo is by them, like she's always so surprised that he just understands her, given how much she hides herself.

i have finished watching the dvd. The tvb version like you have said before cut many scene such as :

    i. when YL hurt broken her arms, QL slept on the chair the whole night beside her.

ii. when QL noticed his arms bleed and Liu asked him to see the physician.

Out of all the cut scenes, I'm the saddest about these ones being cut. I loved that he stayed with her all night, especially after he had to attend his meeting instead of staying with her like he wanted to, and I loved that he disregarded his own injury because he didn't want to make a big deal out of it. WOW.

@believed yeah someone definitely made up that summary. According to the novel, Yingluo is still alive both in her lovestory arc  and her daughter lovestory arc. Secondly, the ending for qianlong and yingluo that never made it on film is when after the ending we see on the drama, we see qianlong telling yingluo to come and look at the blooming gardenias with him. Yingluo who was too obsessed with her imperial noble consort ceremonial dress, ignores qianlong and keeps looking at herself. Qianlong in the end has to come to her, “whats so pretty about yourself, look at the gardenias instead!” Yingluo looks at him annoyed then asks, “am i pretty or the gardenias?” Qianlong answers the gardenias LOL Seeing her angry,  he tells her with a serious expression, “This time, next year, I will watch the gardenias bloom with you.” Yingluo asks him, “how about the next?” Qianlong then responds, “this lifetime, I will spend it watching the gardenias bloom with you.”

    The end ~

P.S: The summary above really doesnt make sense because Empress Fuca would never want Yingluo to suffer the same fate as her by marrying the emperor and being caged inside the forbidden city forever. Second, Yingluo didnt return in time to see Empress Fuca before her death so theres no way Empress Fuca couldve told her those things.

It's so weird because I keep seeing a variation of it in other places, but I was like wow, are we missing something here?

But I LOVE that scene you just described!!!

  12. On EncoreTVB the summary for Yanxi is:

    Quote

In the 6th year of the reign of EMPEROR QIANLONG (Nie Yuan), to find the truth of her elder sister’s death, young lady WEI YINGLUO (Wu Jin Yan) becomes a lady-in-waiting in the Forbidden City. Through investigation, it’s confirmed that her sister’s death is connected to ridiculous PRINCE HONGZHOU (Hong Yao), so she vows to seek justice. EMPRESS FUCA (Qin Lan) is a respected and virtuous person. Not wanting YINGLUO to take the wrong path in life, she spares no effort in showing her warmth and support. With her guidance, YINGLUO continues to grow and become strong and righteous, and even sets aside her hatred to really start living. Unfortunately, the death of the Empress causes YINGLUO to misunderstand QIANLONG. The initial hostility between them eventually transforms into mutual understanding and support. Courageous, quick-witted and broad-minded, YINGLUO manages to solve many problems, and is thus promoted to NOBLE CONSORT LING, assisting QIANLONG in his reign of the empire’s golden age. Before her death, YINGLUO tells QIANLONG about the late EMPRESS FUCA’s last wish, which was for YINGLUO to stay beside him and help him become a capable ruler. QIANLONG finally realizes FUCA’s good intentions. In the 60th year of QIANLONG’s reign, WEI YINGLUO’s son PRINCE JIAQING YONGYAN is installed as the Crown Prince, whose birth mother ROYAL NOBLE CONSORT LINGYI is posthumously honored as EMPRESS XIAOYI. Eventually, YINGLUO has dedicated her whole life to fulfilling her promise to EMPRESS FUCA.

For those who have read the book, does it extend beyond what we see in the show or have they produced this summary from historical facts? (Or, less likely, but still what-if! Were there scenes past the ones we got to see in 70?)

i bought the dvd of Story of Yanxi Palace all episodes in Eng Sub...but one thing i dislike about the dvd are the themes (opening and ending), the production changed it to the cantonese songs.

I prefer more on the original themes....hmmm i am not so happy and satisfied actually although the eng subs quite accurate and better than the one subs by viewers. :(

i bought Empresses In The Palace dvd back then and they kept all same without change it any part or the theme songs.

I think they might have used the TVB airing version for that DVD because I'm watching it on encoretvb right now and of course TVB has cantonese opening and ending. The subs are good, but I'm sad they've cut out some scenes :/

Make sure you watch it on a PC cause it wont work on phone i believe. And turn off your adblocker so that the video can play. Hope this helps!

Are these the full episodes? I heard that TVB condensed and cut out some of the original when they aired it (especially to focus on SE during the last 5 episodes). I also went on encoretvb last night and saw there were videos of only 20ish minutes? I'm not sure if I was looking at the wrong thing though.

EDIT: ooh, it looks like they break up the episodes into two parts

Glued to ep 20-23 they got subbed on ytube Plus 43  :)   One thing i really really love about YL is she has her own truth meter so precise and accurate that she does not fall for anyones bs .  In the ep 23 when CG presented her with Fuheng's belt , she kind of consulted her own intuition and belief again ...gave him s...t mind you , but trusted that he did not do it.

Thank you for the notice! I'd love to know how you know when each episode has new subtitles. I tend to check back weekly but I never know if it's fully subbed or not, especially when they go out of order (I'm SO happy they subbed 43!)

@believed Thanks for the blog. I visited it last night and downloaded so many photos for me to put on my desktop wallpaper. Please put more photos of QL and YL. Thanks in advance.

I'll try! I'm slowing making my way back through the series, depending on speed of subtitles, but I'm always rewatching the later episodes (which is why I'm always coming back with more questions about translation) so you'll definitely see more pictures of them.
