I am a lover of loyal minor characters as Liao Yuan and i miss him. He is one of the reason that i'am pissed. Our Phoenix lost his loyal second and friend just died tragically...

But i am curious about the man whose gave a totem of his word. How could Liao Yuan just die and never ask for the favour that he earned.  The scene seemed meanful. Before watching him die, i was sure that he would be instrumental in some way at bringing back XF.

I know right?? Honestly the most heartbreaking part of the wedding scene...

I was going to ask that next (how people who never read the novel are finding the show). I do think the story is still solid in spite of the changes.

I read the novel and although I have mixed feelings about some of the changes, I still think the story is solid overall. The biggest change from the novel was the addition of the trial in the mortal realm, which I think added a lot of emotional depth to the drama. Another fairly big change is JM's relationship with XF after she starts to suspect him of killing her father. In the novel, she never accuses him of killing her father. She actually pretends not to suspect him at all, lets him visit her frequently during the three years, and pretends to want to marry him. I like that they changed this in the drama, because I didn't think it made sense for the naive and straightforward JM to suddenly become so manipulative and two-faced. It made much more sense for her to be straightforward with her suspicions and confront him right away, like she does in the drama.

One thing I am not a fan of is how they changed XF's character. I really don't understand why they made him into such a big mushy sap in the drama. In the novel, he really earned the title "God of War" not just in his military feats but with his domineering personality as well. He really knew how to throw his weight around and wasn't just this helpless bystander afraid to step on anyone's toes. There was this one extremely memorable scene I really wish they put in the drama where he rushes straight from the battlefield to interrupt the official announcement for RY and JM's wedding, barging into throne room wearing his armor and covered in blood. They also rewrote a lot of scenes to downplay the aggressive and domineering side of his personality--for example, the "mutual cultivation" scene, the scene where he fight his mother to protect JM, and the battle during the wedding. He also never had the brotherly relationship with RY that they show in the drama--they were hostile to each other pretty much from the beginning of the novel. In the drama, there are a couple of scenes where XF tries to reconcile with RY that I think are both a waste of screen time and a unwanted departure from XF's original proud and unforgiving character. However, I do see one benefit to XF's softer character--I like how he seems much more conflicted and emotional in the previews of his interactions with JM after his resurrection. In particular, there's a scene where JM turns to walk away from him and he stops her from leaving by hugging her from behind (something he definitely does not and would not do in the novel). So I do look forward to seeing the changes in his character as Demon Lord.

As an aside, although I don't like how they rewrote the wedding battle scene to give RY the upper hand, I really like XF's actual death scene. I could never picture the proud Phoenix from the novel desperately grabbing onto JM to ask her if she ever loved him, but I still found that scene incredibly poignant in today's episode.

I think it is not so bad yet. I may be a bit delusional at this point but hear me out.

In writing, there is telling and showing. If I remember correctly, it is only until Jin Mi confronts Run Yu that we learn of his duplicity including the 60,000 years of prowess to make the reviving pill. So what this tells us is, Run Yu knew all along that Xu Feng survived. The above clip may be the production team fleshing it out. It's fair game since it was a scene never really written only. We were told about it after the fact.

The trailers/spoilers have the scenes of Jin Mi's road to redemption (searching river of Oblivion, crying in pain, drawing Phoenix) so I remain optimistic.

But why is RY in the room when XF wakes up? That part still makes no sense...

I'm going to go against the prevailing thought and say that while the changes annoy me, I don't think that they have reduced the quality of the drama too much. I think it's still essentially a compelling story, and I have no desire to drop it. However...if they really did change XF's resurrection, then they really did go too far. That would completely mess up the rest of the story.

I don't know about anyone else but I found it pretty pathetic how the water and wind god couldn't put up a better fight. I mean come on he did a better against the empress all the other times. And that lady assistant of RY, I really dislike her. Just because she loves or whatever him doesn't mean she mess with other's life.

I can't wait for the face offs. Let the anger be release!

They didn't dwell on this too much in the drama, but in the book the author makes it clear that no one would have been able to kill the Water God if he hadn't given up half his lingli in order to make Jin Mi's dagger. This is also why Jin Mi feels like she is personally responsible for his death.

The Wind Goddess doesn't die in the book (she isn't involved with fight at all), so I agree with you that she shouldn't have been killed so easily.

Yea..  Happy ending..  I fnish the novel. Hope all the epilogue will be in the series...

I love the all the epilogue.

Btw..  In the final chapter how JM being restruct? Anyone know?

    Spoiler

It seems like she reincarnated? It's not really clear why she has her immortal memories though, and whether or not she is human. Hopefully the drama will explain this better.

After this mutual cultivation, she agrees to marry RY?  Or, she still does not understand what is love?  And this is also before killing XF, is it not?  Does JM does not understand that, after sleeping with a guy, she gives her consent to marry another one?  Its really unfair for JM  becoz of that Elixir pill.  But she is back from the mortal realm does she not understand what is love/feelings for a guy.  She confessed her love for the King(XF) so many times in the human world.  I am still confused about the JM's understanding abt. love.:anguished:

This is confusing to me too. In the book

    Spoiler

JM refuses to break her engagement with Run Yu after her "mutual cultivation" with XF, even though XF asks her to. She also doesn't see any connection between mutual cultivation and love/commitment (she thinks the point of mutual cultivation is to get ling li).

However, in the drama it really seems like mortal Jin Mi develops a much deeper understanding of love. I wonder if the immortal JM is simply going to go back to the way she was before her trial (which would fit with the book better, but wouldn't really make sense in the drama), or if the cracks in her unfeeling pill are going to impact her character going forward.

OMG OMG OMG  kyakkk ottokeee....

that photos from their cultivation (celestial language for making love) night!

I wonder in which episode will that be... and it looks like it happens somewhere in Floral Realm? my shipper heart can’t take it.. (need oxygen even now lol)

when that scene occure, I’ll be dead and you can find me in the ditch...

    Spoiler

In the book in happens in the garden of XF's Qiwu Palace...and based on the photos showing the Phoenix Flower Tree, it's probably the same in the drama. Also, the bottle of wine JM buries in his garden before leaving on her mortal trial is definitely the bottle of wine XF is going to get drunk on before JM comes to his garden.

Honestly, I'm a little angry about this. Everyone is rushing to side with RY now, some even says that XF deserves being punished for having such horrible parents and for "stealing" his brother's girl. It's like the drama has decided to change the male lead in the last few episodes. If they keep this up, no one is going to care about XF anymore, ugh :(

I'm also annoyed by this, but I don't think it's really the writers' fault that this is happening. I think they are doing a very good job at creating a three-dimensional villain with motivations viewers can sympathize with. It's a lot easier for them to write a villain who is evil and power-hungry for no real reason (like the Heavenly Empress), but writing a complex villain makes for a better show. There are a lot of dramas that only have villains like the Heavenly Empress, and honestly they are kind of boring after a while. I think it's much more interesting to watch someone who you can sympathize with, and struggle with watching them slowly become more and more twisted.

It's true that they've been spending a LOT of time on RY for the past few episodes, but I don't think that that pattern will keep going until end of the drama. Once they finish RY's backstory (which seems to be wrapping up in the next episode), I think the drama will go back to focusing on XF and JM.

  9. I honestly don't see how Night's character is significantly different from the novel version. The major difference is that in the novel, we don't find out the whole truth about Night's backstory and desire for revenge until much later in the story. Aside from that, the drama's story about his childhood and his mother's sad fate is just a more detailed depiction of what happened in the novel. I think Night in the drama and in the novel are pretty much the same character--justified in taking revenge, but not justified in how they manipulate Jin Mi into their revenge plot.

Also, I think some people here are misunderstanding the scene where Night confesses his love to Jin Mi in front of the Water God. He already knew Jin Mi was the Water God's daughter, so all that talk about him being willing to suffer the consequences of breaking his marriage contract to be with Jin Mi was a bluff. He knew that none of that would happen anyway, so pretending that he would be willing to be punished that doesn't show any sincerity on his part.

    Love the theme song.

There is a part where JM spill the pill and part where she sacrifice herself between brother fight. I think i saw that XF manage to transform back to phoenix.

If he reborn as demon lord , does this mean the phoenix change to black? Then look like crow lei... Lol

He's not exactly reborn--it's more like resurrection.

    Spoiler

After he dies, there is still one sliver of his soul left, and Jin Mi uses an elixir to revive him from that bit of soul. He's still the same Phoenix, and not a crow.

After he is resurrected, he defeats the rest of the demon kings and becomes the lord of the Demon Realm. The reason he wears all black is because that's what people from the Demon Realm wear.

Will this series have happy ending?

Pls pls make it happy ending..

    The coffin scene takes place

    Spoiler

at the end of their mortal trial, not at the end of the series. After they die in their mortal trial, they reawaken back in the immortal realm as their original immortal selves.

The series has a happy ending, don't worry. :)

Well same here same. I just find him fishy, but really didn't expect that much of him.

I hope the wedding happen sooner so I can see JM have much more chance to repay what she owed to him (oh I love me some good angst) and more scene for the end and extras. I felt the novel end too abruptly with no explanation how she got back together with him after the final battle climaxed. It's clearly not enough for me. Lol.

It looks like they're going to incorporate material from the epilogues into the ending, so it probably won't be as abrupt as it is in the novel.

Before reuniting with her father, Jin Mi was only a fruit fairy, now her father wants her to live up to her potential. So he takes her to see his teacher help so she can help breaking the seal on Jin Mi's real power and then, he asks the Heaven Emperor to "promote" Jin Mi to God status so she can inherit her mother's title. But the promotion is considered unfair because most Gods have to spend years on building up their power and going through difficult trial in order to be promoted. Hence, Jin Mi has to go through a mortal trial, so she can get promoted when she comes back. The empress is planning to kill Jin Mi permanently during the trial because she's going to be at her most vulnerable as a mortal, all alone in mortal realm, without any protection by her side. Phoenix figures out his mother's intention so he followed her to the mortal world.

Oh I see. But how exactly would the Empress kill Jin Mi permanently as a mortal? Isn't the whole point of mortal trials that you die during them, and then revive as your original self?

Unfortunately there isn't a english translation of it yet if I'm no wrong. I do have the link to the chinese version though.

and Thankyou @visiopeia @sugarplum892 for rec those dramas. I'll check it out!

Thanks--I found an English summary, I guess that will have to do for now. :-)

Also, as for where they're going to fit the epilogue plot in the drama,

    Spoiler

I think it would be interesting if they tweaked the original ending of the novel to fit it--after her death, she is reincarnated as a mortal without her memories and Xu Feng asks for a heavenly trial so he can be a mortal too and accompany her until her lifetime is over and they can live together again as immortals.
