  1. HOLY richard simmons WHAT. WHAT. I NEED ALL JAPANESE SPEAKERS IN HERE STAT!!

    @justamom and whoever else!!!

I LOVE YOU, JAPAN. GOD BLESS YOU.

Edit: I ran it through the ol' google translate and using my limited Japanese I finnagled out what the questions were. Might not be completely accurate:

Is there any line or scene from the drama that touched you?

Have you seen any of the director's other works? How is this drama different from them?

The OST is quite nice. Was there a particular song that you liked?

To LSK: What was it like working with Lee Ji-Ah (the actress who played PDH's wife)?

To LJE: What was it like working with Jang Kiyong (the actor who played KI)?

Is there any particular place in Korea you would recommend to the female readers of Marisol fashion magazine in their 40s?

Bums me out that they asked about YH and KI but didn't ask them how it was working with each other.

Doesn't seem like there was much substance in this interview, sadly. Maybe they're being careful to avoid the same issue there was in Korea in Japan. They're selling the drama pretty hard as a "human story" there from what I saw.

I noticed that Lee Seon Gyun and IU have been conspicuously silent in the press post shooting. Nothing, zilch. Usually after such an impactful drama there’d be lots of interviews, etc. The whole controversy must have hit them hard.

Even when they mention the drama in variety shows, they generally avoid any mention of the main pairing in favor of junghee's love line or family or the general warmth of the drama. You can just see the MC's faces go stiff when either of the main actors are mentioned in relation to the other. Not because they're against the pairing but because they're afraid of controversy hitting their show.

If the drama is still this controversial over a month after its run, I'm really worried about how it'll do during the end of the year awards. I was secretly holding onto a tiny little hope that they would win the best couple prize (because c'mon... where are you gonna find a more touching love story. It's not possible.) but thinking about it now I must have been delusional to even think it was possible. :bawling:

    Edit: @ann04

I like your opinion. Let's go with that. :D

I think you're right--the fact they can't just casually talk about the main couple and act like the controversy doesn't exist is because they're afraid of saying something that'll spark more controversy. If their relationship was really intended to be platonic (on DH's part at least) then there would be nothing to skirt around. They could just talk about their relationship from DH's perspective as if there's no romance. But they can't. Because it's there. It's everywhere.

    Thanks @rellea you’re the best!!!

Where did you read this? I saw some comments on DC Inside but there was nothing from the PD team. Please share links!!

    edit:

honestly, I think from the scripts alone it will be clear enough. As a writer I understand. You shouldn’t have to write a “teacher’s guide” for the readers.

I think they put updates on their cafe daum page (http://m.cafe.daum.net/Mymister). I tried poking around but there are certain pages you can't access unless you've reached a certain membership level on the site. Which is where I'm assuming all these people are getting this news from.

Yeah, I agree. In a way, it would take away from the drama if they gave us the "right answer". Still, I would have loved to hear about the thought process behind developing their relationship.

  4. Apparently the commentary they filmed for the director cut DVD/blu ray is 6 hours long!! Holy cow they work fast! I'm so excited!! But it looks like they won't talk specifically about donghoon and jian's relationship... I guess since so many people interpret the drama differently they want to respect the various opinions. Which is the only way they could have gone about it in the end, really, but it's still a huge bummer. :(

"No matter how I see it, the funeral looks like a wedding"

    http://gall.dcinside.com/board/view/?id=mymister&no=57092&page=1&search_pos=&s_type=search_all&s_keyword=장례식

Here's my translation of the first link:

In some ways, the funeral was like a wedding.

It felt like SH's way of repaying DH for the 500000 won he gave him for his daughter's wedding. Like a wedding present to celebrate their future together. Also, as SH himself was a barrier for DH, this resolved that issue (I think maybe they're referring to how he told DH not to divorce YH no matter what?). BongAe passed away blessed as well. She died having said she was the happiest she ever felt in her life. And leaving behind her words of a good "inyeon" and to live happily. This could be seen as her blessing the two. Yura's formal greeting to YH and the way DH took on the role of head of the household making it so that YH had no choice but to leave. The way Choondae looked at JA then at DH it was like he was entrusting her to him... the highlight was when JA and DH placed the urn in the case together. It felt like a life and death promise (to be together in life and death?).

But one thing though, his voice has always been famous, and because of it he has become the subject of endless silly impersonations.  I'm sure it gets old.  LOL!  Can I beg @rellea or some other kind souls to translate the following short video, especially the parts about working with and ruining his female co-stars and other people's love of imitating his voice?

    Ask and you shall receive:

    Spoiler

MC: You had a lot of action this time around. It was very new to us (the viewers) to see LSK’s action.
LSK: Yes, this kind of rough action was a first for me.
    MC: How was it?
LSK: It hurt a lot. But as much as it hurt it was rewarding. We were ripping each other’s hair out and grappling. It was very realistic.
MC: Doesn’t it get awkward after shooting a scene like that?
LSK: Rather, there was the kind of comraderie from back in military training (meaning the comraderie felt between 2 people who underwent extreme hardship together.)
MC: When you’re filming a movie you don’t have time to see your son much do you?
LSK: Yes, I couldn’t see him much last year. So I’ve been almost exclusively at home for the past 2 months since my drama ended.
    MC: That difficult child raising...
LSK: Yes, so I’m looking to decide on my next project ASAP, haha.
MC: Have you seen the return of Superman? If an offer were to come in from that show do you have the confidence to take care of your son by yourself for 2-3 days straight?
LSK: Ah... well... that’s pretty much my daily life lately. But I don’t really want to show people the state of my house. Child raising is fine—it’s my dirty house that’s the problem...
MC: Lately, there are a lot of people on tv imitating your voice. Jin Ihan, jung joon young, heo taehee, yoon doojoon, and jung sungho. Are there times you wish they would stop? ‘They don’t even sound similar why do they keep doing it’?
LSK: As long as Heo Taehee stops. Stop it. I said stop it, you.
MC: “If you’re an actress, grab on to LSK“. You’ve probably heard this saying before. If we look at your past, successful projects, all the actresses who acted opposite you became successful. Why do you think that is? Are you particularly considerate to them?
LSK: Ah... well... They’re all originally talented actresses. If there’s anything, I guess when I act I look a little more closely at my partners’ lines. Ah I’m praising myself too much. They were all originally talented actresses.
MC: Then 1) they were just originally talented and 2) it was thanks to my extra effort to learn their lines
LSK: I’ll have to ruin someone next time. I’ll have to ruin someone haha.
MC: Is there any actress you would like to act together with again?
LSK: If they want to then I’m always open. I’ll ruin at least one person.
MC: You’ll break the actress jinx.

I think she/he's referring to the whole dialogue about "how can a child like you pity an adult like me? I'm pitiful, and it makes you hurt. And that hurts me, when you hurt because of me." He/she is saying that 'like' or 'love' is actually what Dong Hoon is trying to say.

The dialogue in that scene is actually more like:

"I can't stand to see you hurting out of pity for me. And seeing you like that, I can't stand to live because of how pitiful you are. How can a child like you... how can a child like you out of pity for an adult like me [go so far]... That hurts so much I can't live."

They're right. Switch out the "pity" for "love" and you have yourself one passionate and heartfelt love confession.

@rellea it's good to see you!!! Your translation was the very first thing that went up on the fan site:

    https://givemeslippers.wordpress.com/2018/06/09/the-weight-of-what-we-carry/

I've also been hanging out at DC Inside and am flabbergasted at the depth of insights and discussions people are still bringing to the table even today. It's like we're all in some massive withdrawal/denial party.

I'm usually a HUGE football/World Cup fan and it's helping not helping with my withdrawal at all, as evidenced by my activity here. I have a feeling it'll be like Secret Love Affair - it took me six months to stop thinking of it every day, and by the end of that I'd watched it about 30 times.

I had the same question about the DVD version. I asked the My Mister team and this is what they sent me (see linked posts). The specials are going to be exactly the same, but only if you pre-order. If it makes you feel better, I watched a few episodes of My Ahjussi live while I was in Seoul and like I said before, it really felt like a different show. That's also my self-justification for ordering the Bluray

Wahh what an honor! I'm so flattered!! :scream:

I'm constantly shocked by how so many new insights keep coming out. It's like a neverending Christmas there. xD It also makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one whose life is on pause because of this drama.

That's really good to hear about the script! I'm even more excited now. :)

Reading what you said about hearing Donghoon's breathing in HD is making me regret not taking the plunge and buying the bluray version, and I don't even have a bluray player lolll.

@rellea oh that's so cool, congratulations on the DVD. Do you already have it? Or are you waiting for it? Let us know about any important differences if you stumble upon them

    Thanks. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have the DVD yet. I think I read somewhere that it'll be ready for release sometime in November. I'm not sure how many people will still be here by then, but I'll be sure to report my findings!

  8. Hello everyone. It's great to see the conversation is still going. I've been over at the DC forum in the meantime and pretty much not trying all that hard to get over MA. Usually I get tired of obsessing within a couple weeks and move on, but here I still am a month later. So I bought the director's cut DVD. 200 whole dollars of my hard earned money. That's a lot more than I usually let myself spend on things like this. But it's the next day and i still don't regret it, so I must have made the right choice. I have a feeling I'll still be as excited to get it in the mail months later as I am right now.

I was just wondering something about the director's cut. Does anyone know if the script will be included with both the DVD and bluray director's cuts or is it only included with the bluray?

  9. So I found this amazing, detailed analysis of Donghoon's perspective on DC and I spent the past few days translating it. I wish all of you could read it in Korean because the original post is so much better written, but I did my best.

After reading this, I was like "Welp. No need to look for any other DH interpretations. This is it."

Let me know if anything is unclear and I'll try to find a better way to word it.

    Warning, it's really freaking long.

    Spoiler

It may be going a bit too far to say that every prop, background, screen layout, etc. have meaning, but when something is shown repeatedly and continuously, we can assume that it was deliberately inserted by the director in order to convey a message.

Some props that fit this criteria are:

Donghoon: the stuffy-looking bag he wears no matter where he goes at all times.

Jian: her excessively large overcoat, large bag, and instant coffee mix.

Of these, if we observe Donghoon's bag, we can get a sense of his internal shift toward Jian.

We see in episodes 1-5 that even before he became aware of Yoonhee's affair, Donghoon was already dying--a "pitiful" person struggling through his life sentence of earnestness.

After episode 5, as he learns about Yoonhee's unfaithfulness, the things he had lived while bearing thus far became too much to bear and Donghoon crumbles. What makes Yoonhee's cheating especially bad is the fact that her partner is Do Joonyoung. Do Joonyoung--the antithesis of all the values and rules that define Donghoon and that he upholds in his diligent and earnest life. That is the kind of world Donghoon lives in: a world where the person he hates so much he doesn't even want to think about why is successful. He forces himself to struggle through this world out of love and duty to his family. That family is collapsing.

The man Donghoon despises, who is the counterpoint of every single one of his values, is the man Yoonhee chose to cheat on him with.

To make matters worse, Yoonhee had known about Do Joonyoung's plans to have him fired and then for her to divorce him (in episode 7, he asks DJY "Did Yoonhee know [that you were trying to get me fired] or not?").

So, what Donghoon tells Yoonhee in episode 11--that she had "given him a death sentence", deemed him "worthless", and that what she had done was her "telling him to just die"--were not just things he said in the moment in his distress. And it is for the same reasons that the way Donghoon had stood for a very long time in the middle of the Han River bridge in episode 6 was so dangerous.

In the midst of all this, when did Donghoon find the time to think seriously about his relationship with Jian?

If we think about it from his perspective, his relationship with Jian is a really strange one.

An abnormally perceptive girl (DH asks JA in ep 3 how she knew he had gotten a bribe) who can see through to the parts of him no one else can (ep 4 "struggling through your life sentence of earnestness"). She threw away the bribe for him and in return for keeping it secret asks for food and alcohol. Then, she suddenly kisses him, but far from being interested in him, she regards him with hostility.

Despite all this, he cannot help but pity this child who is so similar to him.

Donghoon does not understand why Jian kissed him (although this puzzle would later be solved when DJY reveals the truth about JA). After the kiss incident and Hugye(?), DH and JA pass over the kiss like it never happened. DH must have been uncomfortable, but he reached out to her and greeted her like nothing happened out of his pity for a scarred and guarded child.

It is then that he discovers her true identity: a kind child. Not just a scarred child, but a child who despite being scarred and guarded is also kind.

When he asked Jian the meaning of her name, he lets out a deep, sympathetic sigh and offers her warm words which, though short, were laden with goodwill. "That's nice. You have a great name."

Donghoon probably doesn't think that the things he did (carrying her grandma) for Jian or the things he said to her were anything amazing. Because "being kind to people" is simply basic courtesy to Donghoon. Which is why Jian's returning favor surprised and bewildered him; she hit Kim Daeri hard because he had been badmouthing him.

How does Donghoon respond to this? If we look at episode 6, outwardly, Donghoon expresses anger, regret, and gratitude to Jian in turn. From his response, I felt Donghoon's bewilderment at the situation. From the girl he only ever felt hostility from, while looking at Jian who is watching him with a frustrated expression, he detects goodwill.

In the following bar scene, Donghoon and Jian have a conversation about two separate topics. Donghoon, about his wife's affair, says "If no one knows, it's nothing." and Jian, about the past she wants to hide, says "Then I would be scared that someone would find out. If I'm going to live in fear my whole life, I'd rather have it displayed in Gwanghwamun for everyone to see." They are talking about different things. Despite this, they are comforted by the other. "I'll pretend I don't know." "I feel like you know everything without me having to tell you." It's mysterious how they are able to gain comfort from one another while talking about different things, but even more mysterious is how we, watching them, are able to understand [this comfort].

It is probably a similar kind of comfort to that which many audience members receive while watching My Ahjussi. While watching this drama, I feel like old scars I had forgotten about or that I didn't even know I had are being pulled out and gently touched/healed. Donghoon and Jian, while talking about different things, are discovering and gently touching each other's hidden or forgotten scars. (This is perhaps the same comfort that JA got while listening to DH "persuade" the villa owner to apologize in episode 4.)

In episode 7, Donghoon tells Jian about the nursing home for her grandma and when Jian asks him to buy her food, he responds "I'll buy you alcohol too", expressing his gratitude. (Jian's hint about the public payphones had played a large part in Donghoon finding out about the affair and was the reason he could find DJY and warn him off.)

He is able to talk about DJY, who Donghoon can't tell his brothers or anyone from his Hugye group about, only with Jian. Jian's words "Why did he do it?" "Is that any reason to fire someone?" "What are you going to do? Will he really stop?" "Aren't punishments for those who did something wrong? Want me to kill him for you?" From these words, Donghoon sees that Jian is taking his side, and from her pitying gaze he reads compassion for him.

This pitiful child is.. looking at me pityingly. Though he had intended to buy her food and alcohol to thank her, Donghoon once again is comforted by her.

At the end of episode 7, after fighting with DJY on the rooftop, he goes not to Junghee's bar, but to the bar he met Jian twice at (episodes 6 and 7) and drinks alone. He asks the bartender if that girl didn't come. "The one who's always under dressed for the weather. With the pretty face." From this scene, we find out the real reason he came to this bar: The only person he can talk to about DJY (though he can't talk about Yoonhee with her). The person he receives comfort from every time he sees her. The person who takes his side.

At this point, Jian has already started to become the person who, by eating and drinking together, becomes his comfort. It is not in her words that he finds solace, however. Just that a person who is similar to him sympathizes with him and takes his side is a huge source of strength to Donghoon.

"When I run, I disappear. But I feel like that's the real me."

In Jian's words, there is an unfathomably deep darkness. This darkness and depth makes it impossible for DH to see JA as a child. When DH hears JA say things like this, now and then he lets out a quiet sigh.

For a split second, he smirks at nothing. This is a comfortable place where they can sit and drink without doing anything: a place where he drinks with Jian. At the beginning of episode 8, Jian and Donghoon drink without saying a word, looking like two of the most comfortable people in the world.

Donghoon is comforted once again as he walks Jian home and when they say goodbye. During their walk, he reminisces about his best and only friend "Sangwon"--a forbidden topic in Junghee's bar. In his monologue about internal forces, he is able to confide in someone his hardships and crumbling state.

Jian's blunt words seem almost to be telling Donghoon's own story. The way spring, summer, fall, and winter keep repeating is tiresome and she doesn't know why she keeps getting reborn--her words are also Donghoon's thoughts. This mysterious child is very similar to Donghoon. He does not reply to Jian's question (why do I keep getting reborn) except to say goodbye, but we see from his conversation with Junghee in a later scene that her words left a deep impression on him.

Jian sends one, sincere word to his lonely back: "Fighting". There are 2 reasons for Donghoon's surprised expression:

Jian is not the type to say things like this so he was surprised at her sudden change. He was also surprised that, as if she had seen through to his inner feelings, she had given him the words he most needed to hear that day (the day he had fought with DJY on the roof).

Episodes 8-9: Donghoon, who has become a candidate for directorship, is conflicted. He sees that Jian has missed their stop and he thinks about calling her before going to the supermart. His expression as he leaves the station is conflicted (I recommend those who are able to go back to this scene and check). When he returns, he looks at the station and Jian comes running out, looking around as though she were looking for someone. Their eyes meet.

On their way to Junghee's bar, Jian expresses her support for him when she tells him to make sure he becomes a director. She takes his side and tells him, "Don't worry, you'll become a director. I want to see it. DJY crumble pathetically." DH is once again comforted. Though Jian is unable to see it, DH smirks when she tells him not to worry and that he will become a director. But when DH hears that JA's reason for hating DJY is "Because you hate him, ahjussi", he tells her to call him 'manager' and picks up his pace, keeping a distance between them.

The first time DH has the chance to properly think about his gradually forming relationship with JA came due to external forces: the phone call that informed him JA hadn't stolen the bribe to help him, but to steal it. In his conflicted state of mind, DH rejects JA's request for a meal.

Director Yoon tries to bring DH down by questioning his relationship with JA. His colleagues' concern (about his relationship with JA) for him and their gazes trouble him. DH knows that no matter the truth, his relationship with JA will be an obstacle to his directorial candidacy.

Outside Junghee's bar, DH offers JA a timid greeting, but he knows that his actions and feelings are shameful and is tormented by this. If JA had done nothing but deceive and trick him, then DH would have no reason to be tormented. It is because he saw sincerity in her support of him and saw how even in the midst of her difficulties she took care of her family--because he saw her kindness, no matter what anyone says DH cannot deny what kind of person she truly is.

DH makes a decision to no longer be shameful and finds the old man to learn about JA's past. The line from episode 4 "I'm scared to learn of her past" comes to mind here. The past he learns about is frightening, gruesome, and painful.

On the stairs up to the loan building, DH recollects his brushes with her and a single tear falls. A child as pitiful as her... that child who was beaten, bruised, collapsed, who despite all her hardship never asked for help and instead bore her suffering alone with a can of beer... looked at him compassionately, comforted him, and to give him strength, told him "Fighting". That kind heart no one knew about. That pure heart. That scarred heart was so painful to him it brought tears to his eyes.

His meeting with Gwangil. DH, who came to pay JA's debt, physically fights him. Gwangil reveals that "That b**ch killed my dad. That b**ch killed him" and DH tackles him again. But he pauses briefly. In that short time, DH is not trying to understand JA's actions. As soon as he heard that she had killed someone, DH immediately understood her. Why JA's words and actions are so cold and why she deliberately ends relationships before they even start. The true meaning of the words she had confided in him "I wish it would be displayed in Gwanghwamun for everyone to see". Just how lonely must she have been. How long must she have walked silently alone in her scarred state, not even knowing that she had been hurt.

If DH had thought ahead to how this might affect his chances at promotion and calmly solved the matter with the law like an adult, then the problem would have been solved. But DH does not stop fighting and instead rushes once more at Gwangil. This is because beyond just understanding and compassion, DH felt the scars that JA had unknowingly hidden away to a painful degree. Wouldn't he have wanted to hit that b*st**d just one more time?

When JA passes him quickly by, he calls out to her "Why are you ignoring me again?" He thought she was mad at him, but she returns with a passionate confession he truly never expected. Just how bewildered and shaken must he have been to call that pitiful, kind, pretty JA a 'crazy b**ch' and even hit the back of her head.

This is when something interesting happens. Donghoon's bag.

If Jian's oversized coat and bag symbolize the heavy weight of her reality, then similarly, for Donghoon, the stuffy looking bag always hanging on his shoulder represents the self-imposed shackles of society. This bag is always hanging from DH's shoulder as he leaves for work.

In episode 11, when Gyeomduk brings him down to Junghee's bar, the bag is on his shoulder as he walks inside. Even when he runs, that bag is still slung on his shoulder (in episode 12, when he runs for the last train). Like an unbreakable shackle, the bag hanging from his shoulder gives off a stuffy feeling.

In the ending scene of episode 10, Jian forcefully tears away the shackle-like bag from his shoulder. Her refreshingly straightforward, orchestrated confession as well as the breaking of the shackles brings a sense of catharsis to this scene.

DH eventually comes back to his senses and picks up his fallen bag, but does not put it back on his shoulder, instead holding it in his hands as he leaves.

Starting from the end of episode 10 up through his time with Gyeomduk, Dong has time to himself to think, and I believe that DH realizes then what his feelings for JA are.

At the beginning of episode 11, DH is shown sitting in a daze at home. If before, DH had been made to think about his relationship with JA due to external forces, this time, JA's confession is a chance for him to thoroughly and deeply examine what JA is to him.

To make matters worse, he finds out that YH knows that he is aware of her affair with DJY.

DH, who has failed this life and doesn't know how he should live on, lets his heart fly away and goes to see Gyeomduk.

After his meeting with Gyeomduk, DH does 2 big things.

Thanks to Gyeomduk's encourage to shamelessly think only of himself, DH faces the two problems he had been struggling to deal with.

He goes to DJY, yells, gets angry, and even warns him with his fists before coming back to his seat, where his gaze then looks for JA.

He makes the decision to try and win the review/interview while embracing his relationship with JA (ep 12, JA's lines).

In ep 11, DH chases the leaving JA all the way her house and tells her what he had been too surprised and unprepared to tell her when she confessed. Though JA is trying to leave his life and is determined to be thrown away by him and acted like a crazy b**ch, DH will not throw her away. Instead, he tries to pulls her closer--not into a common man-woman relationship but into a dear and precious one.

The slippers that JA had thrown away in shame. "Buy me another pair of slippers".

In this scene, where JA pushes DH away and he pulls her in, DH is not wearing his bag on his shoulder, but holding it in his hand.

DH could have tried to make her see clearly and told her, "Why do you like me? Why me--an older, married man? I have a wife and a child--even if you like me, we can't work out. There is no future for us.", but he doesn't. This is because DH knows very well why JA likes him and that she is not dreaming of a future with him. And he also knows better than anyone--perhaps even better than JA herself--that those feelings are not so light that they will disappear from a smack to the head. Feelings that will not end no matter how hard you try. Others might not understand, but Donghoon knows exactly what it is like.

To Donghoon's words "You are clinging to me who is pitiful like you and crying", JA replies "Why were you so kind to me? Isn't it the same thing? We both pity each other." Donghoon has nothing to say to that.

Donghoon and Jian both understand what feelings they have for each other.

Jian, who waited for him because she missed him and who only came to like him more. She asks him, "Did I make it awkward?" Indeed, does DH feel uncomfortable and awkward with JA? DH finds the very fact that she likes him heartachingly sad. That this child has no choice but to like him hurts him and makes him sorry. These two, pitiful people who are so alike have no self-compassion and cannot feel sorry for or hug themselves... So they are crying and hugging each other.

**about this last line, I think it wasn't translated in the drama, maybe? But there is a line in the last episode (idk where) where Donghoon says that he hugged himself and cried for the first time. As in, he embraced his scars and comforted/loved himself for the first time. That is what the OP is referencing and what the two characters were doing for each other because they could not do it for themselves.

And after DH is promoted, he no longer carries his bag around.

The changing relationships after episode 12 are even more important, but this post is getting too long and might stop making sense if I keep going, so I'll stop here.

From the pictures and the post, it seems like something about how ki hoon always had an idea that Ji An has preoccupied dong hoon's mind for quite some time.

The drama is over, but there was still one scene I was curious about--the driving scene with Yura and Kihoon.

Was the reason for Donghoon's sadness... really Yoonhee's unfaithfulness?

Two days after the results for the directorial position and the party at Junghee's... We have the driving scene with Yoora and Kihoon.

"Don't laugh. Our hyung is sad."

    "Why is he sad?"

"When that guy is sad, he's really sad.

"Today, in order to join his sorrow, I have to break up with you."

*note: the phrase "join his sorrow" has the connotation of feeling the same sorrow/pain as the person in question.

Might the fact he says that he needs to break up with Yoora to join DH's sorrow mean that Donghoon broke up with someone (also read as separated with)? Here, he says that in order to join Donghoon's sorrow, he must not kiss Yoora, so is the cause of Donghoon's sadness really divorce? That's a little strange.

It seems like the pain Kihoon says he will take part in is not because the brothers know about Yoonhee's affair but because of Jian's departure.

We can be certain of this by re-examining episode 14.

Junghee says "The one she doesn't hate isn't you guys--the one she doesn't hate is our Donghoon."

Yoonhee, Donghoon, Kihoon, Sanghoon's faces all stiffen knowingly.

And although right after the talk of Jian leaving, they all shout "Hugye!" and excitedly clink glasses.. Donghoon's expression is that of a man who has lost everything. On the happy day that he was made a director, Donghoon is sad. Just as Kihoon told Yura, like Pavlov's conditional reflex, when Donghoon is sad Kihoon also becomes sad.

They send their mother off, and Jaechul suddenly asks, "Why did that girl quit?"

Donghoon goes inside without answering but Kihoon, upset, puts out his cigarette.

Let us go back to the car scene from episode 15.

Kihoon takes Yura home and returns to his house. Sanghoon is outside. Kihoon suddenly takes out a cigarette and holds it. Sanghoon asks again, "Why did that girl quit?" It must have been bothering Sanghoon as well.

"I don't know! Since when does that guy ever give a proper answer!" Kihoon answers agitatedly.

Kihoon may have known since long ago how Donghoon felt about Jian.

When Donghoon received a message from Jian, Kihoon had encouraged him "send her a reply/contact her".

In the last episode, he asked DH whether he was still in contact with Jian and wondered frustratedly "Why doesn't she contact you!!?" I don't think this scene was put in without reason.

Kihoon knows at once when his brother is in pain. He was also the first one to find out about Yoonhee's affair.

Kihoon already knew that Donghoon and Jian had become essential existences to one another.

And I'm not sure if I conveyed the humor properly, but I just thought this was funny:

title: Jian completely ignored Donghoon's invitation

In the last episode, in the scenes before the ending scenes, Team 3 says that they want to have a meal with Jian...

DH: I'm a CEO now (proud). Come over some time. Song Gwajang, Kim Daeri, Hyungyu are all there.

    JA: .......

JA: I'll buy you a meal. I want to buy "you" something delicious.

(JA: Just the two of us...)

  11. So I haven't gotten around to the posts yet (they're so long!) but I stumbled on this mv and the song is so beautiful! It's the OST for the drama Live (which also got great reviews). The lyrics are a great fit for our favorite couple (I added them at the end).

    Lyrics:

I walk with no strength, tired and struggling.

    My slumped shoulders are heavy.

My red eyes are never dry

Because the world is so boggy.

But at the end of the day you are there.

You, the one person who listens to what I have to say.

Because you are there I can live on

You may be the one reason in my life

    You are ooohh...

You are the person I am grateful for

For giving me the strength to live on

    For letting me dream again

Though my tired heart exhausts me

And the world keeps rushing me

Because you are there I can live on

You may the be one reason in my life

    You are ooohh...

You are the person I am grateful for

For giving me the strength to live on

Although this road is much too long

I can take a breath again and walk on

Because you are a place for me to lean on

As long as it's you, nothing else matters

    You are ooohh...

You are the person I am grateful for

For giving me the strength to live on

    For letting me dream again

  13. I only included the meat of this post. It's a long one based on the background lines in the offices during the first and last episodes. I noticed that some subtitles for these scenes weren't accurate.

Not everyone might agree with this post, but I thought it was interesting enough to post anyway.

    Here goes:

The first episode opens to a bustling office scene. A female employee has a phone tucked under her chin while she arranges some documents and gives her lines. "In this case, I don't think that the....(?) Yes, concrete will not be strong enough (the strength of concrete is not sufficient). I think we will have to look for a different method of reinforcement."

<We will have to look for a different method of reinforcement>

While this line is said, the scene changes to Jian watering the plants. Could her act of giving water to the plants have meaning as well?

Several more scenes showing Jian are shown while male employees speak jargon about concrete and strength and so on in the background. We then see Donghoon working hard at his desk accompanied by this line:

"Well what can we do... We have to reinforce it... It's a new building... We have to reinforce it."

The line <We have to reinforce it> is repeated several times while Donghoon and Jian are shown in one screen and then alternatively.

If we were to analyze this, Donhoon's and Jian's present situations are like buildings with concrete of insufficient strength and thus dangerous. Everything about their lives needs a method of reinforcement. And I believe that the scenes and lines imply that is each other. To give each other the strength for a new life.

And in the last episode, episode 16.

Donghoon has started a new company with his employees when a phone call comes. Donghoon walks over to pick up the phone and says something along the lines of the following: "Yes. Yes. I've checked it. Ah, but when considering emergency situations, in order to evacuate 4,000 people in 20 minutes, you will need one more stairway. Yes. If we go by the current design, there would not be enough time to evacuate in emergencies." And then we see LJA's brightened and sophisticated figure.

Donghoon certainly appears much brighter. However, the lines <need one more stairway>, <if we go by the current design there is not enough time to evacuate>. In the end, Donghoon, in his current, stably designed condition, still needs some kind of emergency exit to escape the tightness/harshness of life. That is LJA.

My conclusion from the above lines is "Donghoon's exit is Jian."

Could I have gone too far? They say that Won Suk PD never puts any fluff in his works (ie everything has meaning!). I'm certain that there is meaning even in the seemingly ordinary scenes and lines.

The poster updated with clarification since people were confused by the wording of "exit":

My thoughts are such: there is an already designed/constructed building, but it needs a stairway for emergency situations. Similarly, when the now comfortable and stable Donghoon comes across emergency situations in the future, he will need his own stairway. That is Jian.

So my conclusion is that in the long life ahead of him, the one passage that will let Donghoon breathe is Jian.

They're split between the shippers and non-shippers too. The fighting was intense, but it's mostly settled down now and people generally seem to accept that they're in love. Tons of funny edits and fanmade spin-offs.

There were some half-joking comments about people shipping JA with DJY and DH with JH.

I thought about translating some posts but I wasn't sure if people here would be interested. I'll try to find some of the ones I liked and translate them for everyone.

Doesn't this song remind you of Ji An? I believe IU composed it herself and wrote the lyrics.

The harmonization at 1.45 is so beautiful.

I always imagined little IU when I listened to this song, but now that you mention it, it really is a good fit for JA.

I think Bad Day is the saddest song IU ever made. She said wrote it when she was in middle school, too. On a day when she particularly hated herself... She's said in an interview that no matter how harshly someone criticizes her, she will always criticize herself more harshly. And that she could never enjoy her successes because she was always thinking that she would fail and disappoint everyone next time. For all her fame and accomplishments, IU has an incredibly low self-esteem. She says she prefers to think of it as a good thing because it keeps her from getting full of herself, but I can't imagine that it's done her mental and emotional health any good. :(

  16. I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, but I was going through the DC Inside forums and thought this was really interesting.

Everyone remembers the persimmons (some subs called them tomatoes for some reason) that JA kept buying for her grandma and leaving behind, right? Someone brought up an interesting point about how in media, something red is often placed to represent the red string of fate (e.g. the red scarf from Goblin).

In My Ahjussi, persimmons took that role. Persimmons look more orange than red to me, but they're usually considered red in Korean culture (like how green traffic lights are called 'blue' even though they're clearly not).

The first time JA and DH met in the store, DH grabbed the persimmons she took out and ran out to try and give them to her but couldn't find her.

Then, when she was hit by a bike and dropped her persimmons, DH grabbed them and chased after her again. That was the episode he found out about her grandma, told her "you are a good person", the first time JA started to open her heart to him, and the reason he started to willingly spend time with her. So in a sense, the persimmons (fate) were what brought them together.

I thought this was really interesting because I'd noticed persimmons kept appearing in the earlier episodes and thought they had to have some meaning but couldn't guess what.

Here's the link to the post if anyone can read Korean and wants to read it for yourself:

Wow, @rellea, thank you so much for your translation:

Here's another interview, this time with Kim Min Seok, the youngest member on Dong Hoon's team:

    http://www.zenithnews.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=115361:

    You're welcome!

So about the article you posted, it's mostly about Kim Min Seok rather than the drama so I only translated bits I thought were relevant or interesting from the article:

Apparently he tried out for Kim Dae Ri, Kwang Il, Ki Beom, and Hyung Gyu. (Imagine him as Kwang Il though!)

About the slapping scene between JA and KDR, LJE said it was her first time hitting someone so they rehearsed it many times before filming. They concentrated while filming but after it was over, they tried hard to lift the mood so it wouldn't get awkward.

Q: As the youngest actor on set (among the office staff and excluding LJE), was there a senior who took particularly good care of you?

A: They all looked after me a lot. LSK sunbae-nim in particular always high-fived us whenever he came, hugged us, and asked us to get drinks with him. After the first filming, he suggested we all eat together, so all the office staff cast ate together on the set. While eating and talking together about the drama, we naturally got very close. I think the atmosphere on set only became so warm because he approached us first and set aside time for us.

Seo Hyun Woo also took very good care of me. We knew each other from college so it was nice to work with someone I knew.

Q: Were there any fun episodes while filming?

A: There are too many. One time, we were filming in Yeoncheon during the winter and it was -17 degrees. We were shooting a scene where we needed to take pictures for our work and everyone was bouncing up and down and wearing woolly socks. But when we started filming, we had to act with serious faces on like nothing was wrong and it was so funny.

Q: There were controversies surrounding "My Mister", but it was a very touching, lingering drama. What kind of project is it to you?

A: My Mister is a warm drama. It is a mysterious drama that made my heart go numb and that I cried along to. There were times that happened while filming too, and I felt like I had really become a team member.

I liked the scene where DH becomes a director best. We didn't rehearse that scene, but I think the hugging, laughing, and yelling came out well in the drama. It felt like a high-ranking member of my team was really being promoted so I got excited and teary-eyed.

I translated the article Joseph Lim posted of Seo Hyun Woo's interview.

He mentions that he already knew LSK as his senior from their university days. He says that many of the actors were from the same arts university, so that helped them with the comrade-like rapport in the office.

"I worked with Sun Gyun hyung a few times in the past on movies, but My Mister was the first time we properly acted together. In his private life, he is a very good sunbae/senior, but on the set, he really felt like Manager Park. I began to see him not as the Sun Gyun hyung I knew but as if he were really my supervisor Dong Hoon and before I knew it I was looking at him with a respectful and admiring gaze.

Although I am only a supporting actor, I felt that Sun Gyun hyung truly believed in not only me, but everyone on the team. I think we were able to overcome the difficulties we faced during shooting thanks to him, who always gave us courage and often handed out praise. In my case, especially, I felt a lot of pressure because this was my first drama, but that part of him helped release my nerves. The way Sun Gyun hyung allowed us to focus solely on the scene and pulled us forward was very much like a veteran actor.

"I first came to know IU as a singer before an actor. I knew her only as a very good singer, but I was shocked by her acting many times while filming. I felt her deep skill, like that of a true, self-made actress who started out working on indie films and made her way up step by step. The character of Lee Ji An had already taken root inside of IU. I felt a very strong energy from her every time we filmed and her concentration was incredible. I was increasingly surprised by the way she tried to constantly maintain LJA's emotions and thoughts.

There were many times I thought to myself "she's really good at acting" while watching IU. Other Idol actors her age and young actors usually approach technical or emotional acting through trial and error, but there were no mistakes like that with IU. Every time I watched her, I just thought to myself "How does she act like that?". I'm not praising her as a colleague, but simply expressing my surprise and amazement (can't think of a better way to translate 신기함). Of course, IU's JA wasn't a role a friendship could sprout with in the story and, perhaps because of that, I couldn't approach her heartily so I just admired her acting from afar.

"I think [My Mister] was a project that Sun Gyun hyung and IU-ssi acted while trusting each other. I am glad because it seems that that trust was conveyed to the viewers through their acting and was proven/validated (as in their trust in each other was validated by the great end result). As the drama reached its climax, we (the supporting actors) were also swept along and grew tense/excited. In reality, at first, like JA and (his character's name), IU and I were uncomfortable and awkward with each other, but as the drama went on we became a little closer and more at ease. Not too long ago during the wrap up party, I called out 'Ms. Jian!' when I should have said 'Ms. IU!'. That is how much deeper an impression JA left on me than IU."

  19. I've been listening to a bunch of IU music lately to cope, especially the ones with lyrics that remind me of My Ahjussi.

Her song Heart is the perfect representation of Jian's feelings for DH

And Knees (one of my personal favorites) was written about IU's own grandmother, and I think they capture JA's sadness pretty well. The subtitles on this video aren't the best, but they get the message across.

There were a few comments on Naver saying that they were reminded of Every End of the Day. Personally, I think JA is much too straightforward about her feelings and the song is too bubbly to suit her, but it's a cute song.

For those of you who recognize Chinese characters, In-Yeon is 因缘 or 缘分。

My understanding of that word since I was a child is that in-yeon is a kind of invisible string that ties two people together, whether in a friendship, romantic or other sense. But more often than not used in a romantic sense - eg we broke up because our in-yeon has come to an end.

The interesting thing about 인연 is that another possible, but rare character for that is 姻缘 or marriage destiny, ie the person you are fated to marry. Just saying

@chickfactor @rellea maybe you can share more on how this is used in Korean social context?

It can have a similar connotation in Korean speech depending on how it is used. For example, if I were to say "Do you believe in in-yeon?" Then I probably mean do you believe in soulmates. But in-yeon is commonly used in daily speech to describe non-romantic relationships between people too.

Let's say that there are two people who are very bad for each other. Their acquaintance/relationship constantly brings the other down over and over again. You might say that they have a bad in-yeon.

Or if two people meet on the street but never meet again, they had a "short or passing in-yeon".

If two people loved each other very much but end up breaking up after exhausting all their options and trying their best to make it work, then you could say that their in-yeon (bond connecting them) came to an end and that it wasn't in-yeon (fate).

In DH and JA's case, they build each other up and bring good to one another so they have a "good, precious in-yeon."

Little tidbit: if you switch the letters around you get 연인 (yeon-in), which means "lovers", haha.

But yeah. We all know their meeting was in-yeon in both senses of the word, but I think Grandma was just talking in general about how good this man is for her granddaughter.

Sometimes shaking hands isn't just shaking hands.

    - The post-funeral scenes were pure gold. The bus scene. The conversations on the stairs. JA's sass - "Are you planning to be super nice to me and then say, "Okay, that'll be all" and leave me?" Halmeoni's timeless advice... which makes me wonder: How much of the subtlety got lost in translation? Like "ae omma vs. jib saram". I'm especially curious about what Halmeoni said about DH and JA's relationship. I'd be eternally grateful if someone could interpret that Korean bit. Some real motivation to level up my Korean skills!

P.S.: I'm curious - How do you guys interpret the show's title? Looking back, why couldn't they have just named it "Ahjussi"? I don't think it's merely because there's a movie with the same name. For instance, there are dozens of shows with the same title as my drama love, First Love (the 1996 drama).

    So about what Gramma says:

First, some background knowledge. She mentions "in-yeon" (인연), which can be interpreted as a bond between people or as a destined meeting. When I say "destined meeting", I could be referring to the belief that every meeting is fated to occur--so just the fact that I'm replying to your post and that you will most likely see it and possibly respond means that we have some kind of in-yeon even if this is the last time we ever interact again. That's the "casual" definition. Or, it could mean a relationship with special meaning--someone that you were predestined to meet and who has a huge impact on your life (not necessarily in a romantic sense).

Anyway, this is my translation of what she told Jian:

"It is a very good in-yeon (about DH and JA's relationship). And a precious one. When you think about it (literally, look slowly/calmly), every in-yeon is miraculous and precious. You must repay (him). Live happily. That is repaying (him)."

Also, the director explained the title during the press conference. He said that the drama is about how two people who seem like they would have nothing in common become precious to each other, and the title is supposed to reflect that. Like how someone might say "my mom" or "my friend" or "my neighbor".

I think the extra twisting of knife (he looking back at her, and she doesn't know he did; then she did, and he doesn't know) was a bit of an overkill (would it have killed the director to just make their timing right for once? A year later, she is back in Seoul and doesn't call. He has kept track of her progress via the chairman. She hears his voice but doesn't approach. He smiles brightly when he sees her. He clearly wants more while she is non-insistent. He does the handshake and says thanks. She says she'll call. He probably thinks she's moved on from her crush phase, he is sad to see her go but okay with it! Moving on in life happily. Now Ji-An is the mystery because previously she had the forward personality and now she's all coy / shy - burnt too many times and probably still thinks he was never interested! Well, he can always wait for the phone call and a dinner! IF that happens. Still up in the air after 16 episodes! I understand that it was to show that she now has a life, a separate and independent fulfilling life, and is not a hanger-on. And he is free. But I don't understand why they couldn't spell it out and be together in 'this' lifetime. You cannot live your life thinking there will be another! I did not understand the voiceover: DH says 'are you comfortable' and she replies 'yes'. What does that mean or was it reference to some other previous scene / dialogue? Because technically shouldn't this question be asked to DH instead of Ji-An? It always seemed like he brushed her feelings off and was the uncomfortable one.  It looked like, if DH is thinking that, then he's satisfied with how her life is and that he was able to help her get there and that's that, he doesn't want anything more, he's satisfied that she's at a happy place. The handshake seems like a goodbye too. But then again, DH would not have reached out his hand to Ji-An, if he was still married and he didn't want more, he definitely would never have looked back at her either, and that crying scene in the apartment was his way of letting out the past, all that had happened - but even the divorce is left hanging in the air - and that's okay, I guess? Whatever).

I felt like she didn't call because she was afraid that if she heard his voice, she would miss him too much to go on and wouldn't be able to stop herself from running over to him. For all she knew, he was still living happily with his wife and didn't have room in his finally peaceful life for her to return with all her unrequited feelings. She moved so far away partly to get over him, after all. That she hadn't called him is just proof that she wasn't able to do that yet.

In the last scene,  Donghoon was insanely happy to see her again and to see that she was doing well, but he looked a little sad too. Maybe he was a little lonely because he wasn't the only thing in her big, round eyes anymore. The girl who said she only began to live after she met him has a life and friends outside of him now.

On the other hand, Jian seemed a little overwhelmed that the man she loved and that she had missed for so long suddenly appeared before her again. She looked happy to see him but really nervous too. Like she wasn't sure where she stood with him anymore. When they stood there and gazed at each other for a while and then DH asked to shake her hand, I think she got the courage to ask for more. And DH smiled so hard. He was so happy. Oh, my heart.

I loved that Donghoon didn't tell her to go join her coworkers. He was always saying "가" ("Go.") or "간다" ("I'm going.") and that was how they always parted ways. I was expecting him to tell her to go in this scene too, but instead, to keep her with him longer, he asks for a handshake, and hangs on for dear life until she promises to call him. Look how hard he was holding onto her poor, tiny fingers!

I've never seen DH as honest about his feelings as in this one scene. They both met each other again, this time as happy, well-adjusted people. Maybe this is finally the right time for them to work. What a fantastic way to end the series.

I thought I would have my life back once the drama was over, but I'm still as hung up on it as ever. Time to rewatch the whole thing over and re-experience the feels and sads! Fingers crossed for a bunch of behind the scenes and Q&A footage!!
