Ryoo Seung-wan, Kim Hye-soo, Yeom Jeong-ah, Jo In-seong's 'Smuggling' confirmed for summer release

Director Ryoo Seung-wan's 'Smuggling' has confirmed its summer theatrical release.

Director Ryoo Seung-wan, who made a comeback in 4 years with "Mogadishu" in 2021 and swept both critics and box office hits and breathed new vitality into theaters after the pandemic hit, returns with his new work "Smuggling."

'Smuggling' is a maritime crime drama about people who get caught up in smuggling on a peaceful beach.

    spacer.png

The poster, which was released along with the news of the summer release, contains the unique silhouettes of Kim Hye-soo and Yum Jung-ah, whom we met for the first time in the history of filmography. Here, the appearance of actors who have become a fresh combination with only their names, including Kim Hye-soo, Yeom Jeong-ah, Jo In-seong, Park Jung-min, Kim Jong-soo, and Go Min-si, is predicted to add to the anticipation. In particular, with the exception of Jo In-seong from 'Mogadishu', all the actors working together with director Ryoo Seung-wan for the first time raise expectations for a fresh synergy between them.

    spacer.png

In the launching trailer released together, it evokes trust in director Ryoo Seung-wan's work, as well as a cool sensibility unique to summer movies in the background of going back and forth between the sea and the city. In particular, the crime genre of director Ryu Seung-wan, who returned after a long time since 'Veteran', meets with new casts such as Kim Hye-soo, Yeom Jeong-ah, Jo In-seong, Park Jung-min, Kim Jong-soo, and Go Min-si, raising expectations for what color they will unfold.

'Smuggling' is a theatrical release that is once again presented by well-made production company Oeyun Naegang Co., Ltd., which has always provided satisfaction to summer audiences, from 'Veteran' in 2015, 'Battleship Island' in 2017, 'Exit' in 2019, and 'Mogadishu' in 2021. It is expected to give a thrilling pleasure to the audience at the theater in the summer.

  4. Pachinko Season 2 Will Break Your Heart All Over Again

Apple TV+'s sensational tearjerker will begin filming its latest installment in February.

If the Season One finale of Pachinko wrung you out like a sponge made of tears, you’re far from alone. Apple TV+’s multigenerational saga about a Korean immigrant family saw tragedy strike on multiple levels, with one terminally ill character succumbing to her illness and another hauled off to prison for suspected treason against the Japanese emperor. Many of our favorite characters were left in the lurch, leaving emotional fans to wonder: will Pachinko return for a second season? And now, with the series scooping up the trophy for Best Foreign Language Series at the Critics Choice Awards, read on for everything we know about the future of Apple TV+’s breakout hit.

Is Pachinko Renewed for Season Two?

Yes. In April, Apple TV+ announced that Pachinko will continue for a second season. “Words cannot express my joy in being able to continue telling the extraordinary story of this indomitable family,” said showrunner Soo Hugh. “I’m grateful to the amazing team at Apple and Media Res studio for believing and supporting this show and to our passionate fans who have cheered us on. It’s an honor to be able to continue working with this amazing cast and crew.” Hugh has said that the plan is for the series to run for four seasons, but so far, only Season Two is confirmed.

What Will Pachinko Season Two Be About?

Pachinko is adapted from the award-winning novel of the same title by Min Jin Lee. Given that Season One didn’t exhaust the material, there are many more stories to tell.

When we last saw Sunja, the matriarch of the family, she was standing on a street corner in Osaka circa 1938, selling her homemade kimchi to shoppers at the local market. According to Hugh, a “little bit of a time jump” will take us to World War II, where Sunja, now her family’s breadwinner, “will become stronger, even though there are so many burdens on her shoulders.” Fans of Lee’s novel know that Sunja will struggle to make money as ingredients grow scarce during the war, then decamp to the countryside with the help of Hansu, the wealthy father of her eldest son, Noa. “It’s about the story of her, continued from Season One… even heavier, but still, there’s joy,” Hugh teased. “Still, there’s joy.”

Executive producer Theresa Kang-Lowe teased how this setting will shape Season Two's tone, telling Deadline, "I think where we’re going in Season Two, the stakes get even bigger and it’s actually even more dramatic because what happens is you see with occupation how something is coming towards everyone in Korean-based families. What happens in Season Two is the scale grows and the stakes get even higher. I can’t tell you more than that, but I can tell you… we always say that Season One is epic. Season Two gets to an even greater place of epic-ness in scale."

Per Hugh, Season Two will also focus on Sunja’s sons, Noa and Mozasu. The boys appeared as children in Season One, though little about their childhood was explored. Speaking to Deadline, Hugh touched on the brothers, saying, “The brotherhood between Mozasu and Noa, I think because they’re so young in Season One, we don’t get a capture, but in Season Two, that brotherhood is just magical.” Book readers know that tragedy is in store for the brothers, as an adult Noa will one day take his life. In the show, we saw Mozasu and an elderly Sunja dance around this painful history, but never address it explicitly. If Season Two skips around in time like Season One, it could move into the brothers’ adulthood and explore this family tragedy.

Hugh also teased an expanded role for Kyunghee, Sunja’s sister-in-law, who becomes her best friend and partner in the kimchi business. “In season two, Kyunghee comes into her own as just her own person and her own being, and she’s just one of my favorite characters in this story, so I would love, love to see that,” Hugh said.

As for the present timeline, we last saw Sunja’s grandson Solomon striking a deal with Mamoru Yoshii, a seedy but powerful Japanese businessman with deep roots in the pachinko parlor business. Jin Ha, who plays Solomon, teases that his character’s Season Two arc will be about “moral conflict”—and “completely new,” rather than sourced from the novel. “I think we are seeing him question his preconceived notions of what success looked like when we meet him at the beginning of the season, and I’m rooting for him to find a healthier and less toxic idea of success,” Ha told Deadline. Hugh described Solomon's latest business decision as "a deal with the devil"—no doubt he'll pay the price in Season Two.

When is Pachinko Season Two Coming Out?

No premiere date has been set, but production is moving along. Pachinko is set to begin the first part of filming in Toronto on February 1, 2023, and wrap on April 21, 2023. The second part of the shoot, taking place in Busan, Korea, will begin in late April and conclude by the end of June 2023. Leanne Welham, known for her work on His Dark Materials and Conversations With Friends, will direct four episodes of the season.

What these dates mean for Season Two's release date isn't quite clear, but we're hoping for a late 2023 or early 2024 release. Watch this space for updates as we continue to learn more.

  6. Korean-language works win Critics Choice Awards for 4 consecutive years

'Pachinko' named Best Foreign Language Series

    spacer.png

Apple TV+'s original series "Pachinko" has become the Best Foreign Language Series at this year's Critics Choice Awards, making it the fourth time for a film or a series in the Korean language to win a prize at one of the acclaimed U.S. awards.

The series beat eight other nominees, including another Korean-language series "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday (local time).

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, the epic saga tells the story of a Korean immigrant family across four generations from the perspective of Sunja (Kim Min-ha), the family's matriarch.

It starts early in the life of Sunja, who is born to a hard-working family in the southeastern port city of Busan during the 1910-45 Japanese occupation of Korea. After being forced to move abroad to Japan, she struggles to protect her family through devastation and tragedy while trying to find a sense of belonging in a foreign land. The later life of Sunja is played by veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung.

A large part of the series was filmed in the Korean language, with Japanese and English also being used.

"Pachinko," which was released last March, has garnered popularity with its well-made cinematography and its heart-wrenching, dynamic story of a family. Following the eight episodes, the production of the second season has been confirmed.

The series was named one of the best TV programs of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI) last month and has been scoring several wins at awards, including the Best Breakthrough Series for a Long Format (over 40 minutes) at last year's Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Founded in 1996, the Critics Choice Awards is presented by the Critics Choice Association to recognize the finest cinematic achievements. The win of "Pachinko" in this year's awards has again shown enhanced attention to Korea-related content or content made by Korean creators in recent years.

    Spoiler

Bong Joon-ho and his "Parasite" won Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film in 2020; "Minari" and Alan Kim clinched the Best Foreign Language Film and Best Young Actor awards in 2021; and Netflix series "Squid Game" and Lee Jung-jae notched the Best Foreign Language Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series awards in 2022.

Although failing to win an award, "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Series category.

The Korean-language films and series that have won awards or been nominated at the Critics Choice Awards were all in different genres, from legal dramas and survival thrillers to the history of the Korean diaspora, showing that various sides of Korea-related content are recognized globally.

Director Park Chan-wook's Cannes-winning film "Decision to Leave" was also nominated for this year's award for Best Foreign Language Film, competing with Germany's "All Quiet on the Western Front," France's "Close" and India's "RRR," but failed to score a win. The trophy went to the Indian action film "RRR."

  10. ‘Pachinko’ Season 2 Filming Officially Delayed to February 2023 at Apple TV+

Along with the delay, there is also a shift in the filming locations as earlier it was set to shoot in Toronto and Japan, but now it will film in Toronto and Korea

The filming for the second season of the Apple TV+ Series, Pachinko, which is currently in pre-production has been officially delayed for three weeks. The reason behind the delay is not known, but one of the reasons could be the current weather condition as it is around -10°C at the filming location.

The production was scheduled to begin this Monday (January 9) in Mississauga, Toronto, ON, Canada, which has been delayed for three weeks. Now, Pachinko Season 2 will begin filming on February 1, 2023, and wrap on April 21, 2023. Earlier, the Toronto filming was scheduled to wrap on March 27. This is likely to cause a delay in the start of the second part of the shoot, which will now take place in Busan, Korea instead of Japan. The first season was filmed in Vancouver and Korea.

Earlier we revealed the second part of the shoot will begin immediately in Japan after filming is done in Toronto. Now the filming is likely to start by the end of April in Busan, South Korea to finish by the end of June 2023. Leanne Welham is attached to direct four episodes of the second season.

“Pachinko” depicts the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family through four generations as they leave their nation in an indomitable struggle to live and thrive. Beginning in early 1900s South Korea, the story is recounted through the eyes of a heroic matriarch, Sunja, who succeeds despite all odds. The first season of Pachinko premiered on Apple TV+ on March 25 of this year and was renewed a month later for a second season.

The series stars Yuh-Jung Youn as older Sunja, Lee Minho as Hansu, Jin Ha as Solomon, Anna Sawai as Naomi, Minha Kim as teenage Sunja, Eunchae Jung as young Kyunghee, Junwoo Han as Yoseb, Inji Jeong as Yangjin, Jimmi Simpson as Tom Andrews, Kaho Minami as Etsuko, Steve Sanghyun Noh as Isak, Soji Arai as Mozasu, and Yuna as young Sunja.

“Pachinko” is written and executive produced by Soo Hugh, who created the series and serves as showrunner. Kogonada and Justin Chon are executive producers and directed four-four episodes of the first season. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce for Media Res, the studio behind the series; Theresa Kang-Lowe executive produces for Blue Marble Pictures, and Richard Middleton also executive produces. David Kim and Sebastian Lee co-executive produce.
