  2. Straddling fantasy and reality in ‘Vanishing Time’

Director Um Tae-hwa’s “Vanishing Time: a Boy who Returned” offers a mix of genres unfamiliar to Korean cinema -- it is fairy tale-like in its plot, fantasy-esque in its computer graphics, but also firmly rooted in reality.

Um has always been interested in “the area where the real and surreal clash, or influence one another,” he told reporters after a press screening on Tuesday in Seoul.“I imagined what it would be like to live in a place where time stops. I imagined it would be a lonely existence,” he said.

    restmb_jhidxmake.php?idx=5&simg=20161102

In the film, Soo-rin (Shin Eun-soo), a young girl, moves to the fictional island of Hwanodo with her stepfather after the death of her mother. She spends her days lost in her own imagination and later befriends Sung-min (Lee Hyo-je), a young boy living on the island. The two become close, developing a language of their own within a shared fantasy, deep in the forest.

Out of curiosity, the two visit a construction site in the mountains, but everyone at the site goes missing in an accident, except Soo-rin.

A few days later, a grown man, in the form of actor Kang Dong-won, claims to be the young Sung-min and approaches Soo-rin. He explains that he was trapped inside a time warp, where he alone aged while others remained the same.

Only Soo-rin believes him, while the villagers and police suspect the grown man to be the culprit behind the disappearances.

The bond between the two young souls in a world where everyone is skeptical forms the core of the film, which has the notion of faith as its biggest theme. According to Kang, “this film, essentially, is about people’s ability to have faith, and their innocence.”

    restmb_jhidxmake.php?idx=5&simg=20161102

Kang, 35, who embodies a 13-year-old boy for his character, pulls off the feat convincingly with his trademark boyishness.

“I had to find the right tone,” he said. “I tried to think of how the audience would perceive the character.”

Actress Shin, born in 2002, is 20 years Kang’s junior. In her on-screen debut, Shin deftly portrays a young girl who is intensely sensitive and perceptive of details that others often miss.

“I tried to imagine what it would feel like to be in her position,” she said.

The film hits Korean theaters on Nov. 16.

  3. Best celebrity eaters

KBS World‘s “Entertainment Weekly” dedicated a segment to finding out which celebrity has the best on-camera eating style.

During the segment, the TV hosts analyzed the eating habits of different celebrities, such as Park Bo-gum, Jung Jun-ha and Deffcon. After conducting a survey they narrowed it down to three.

Yoon-hoo, the son of singer Yoon Min-soo who has even shot several food commercials, came in at No. 3. Despite being very young, the child star has proven himself to be a formidable eater with his endless appetite for noodles.

Hyeri from Girls’ Day came in second place. She demonstrated her tremendous appetite on MBC‘s variety show “Real Men.” She stretches her mouth to great lengths in order to eat her food in one go.

First place went to Ha Jung-woo, who has been recognized over the years for his acting as well as his eating. His food fighter spirit was truly highlighted in his recent film, “The Tunnel,” where he shared dog food with a stray dog. According to the production staff, the dog food was real and not just a prop.

  4. Shinhwa to unveil new song this weekend

    19202947.jpg

Veteran K-pop idol act Shinhwa surprised fans with the announcement of a new track that will be unveiled prior to the release of their upcoming album.

The boy band said on Wednesday through their official homepage that the track “She Said” off their new record will be made available online on Saturday.

“We are making this track available as a surprise for fans that are looking forward to the group’s upcoming thirteenth album,” said the boy band’s agency, Shinhwa Company.

The new track was described as a mid-tempo ballad about a budding romance between two friends. It will feature soft guitar and piano in a style reminiscent of slower songs typically released during the autumn season.

The boy band originally debuted in 1998 under SM Entertainment and is regarded as one of the first generation of idol groups.

  5. 'Dr. Romantic' trades trendy for classic

    By Lee Haye-ah

SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Yonhap) -- The upcoming SBS medical series "Dr. Romantic" will be a classic tale of doctors searching for meaning in their lives, its director said Tuesday, inviting viewers to join the quest.

"It won't be difficult. Our screenwriter wrote the script in plain language," Yoo In-shik said in a meeting with reporters at SBS headquarters in western Seoul. "Of course, I thought more than I would for other jobs about what this work entails and how doctors approach it, because the job of a doctor carries a heavy sense of duty."

The new series premieres on Nov. 7 with veteran actor Han Suk-kyu in the lead role of Boo Yong-joo, a famous but eccentric surgeon who one day moves to a small, rundown hospital in the countryside. For reasons that will be explained later in the drama, Boo hides his true identity and goes by the appellation "Teacher Kim." Together with two young and passionate doctors played by Seo Hyun-jin and Yoo Yeon-seok, Boo builds the remote hospital into a top institution with a reputation for its cutting-edge technology and integrity.

    AEN20161018010700315_02_i.jpg

"We talked a lot about the meaning of the word 'romantic,'" Yoo said. "'Romantic' is when we derive pleasure from doing something without expecting something in return. 'Dr. Romantic' is a story about doctors who want to do their work rather than attain something through the job."

Han, an iconic figure in South Korean cinema, is starring in his first non-historical TV drama in 21 years. Moreover, it's his first time playing a doctor. Yoo recalled that he didn't hesitate for a moment when Han expressed an interest in the role.

"When we met and talked, I could sense something very 'analog' and warm in him, something that brought back memories of our past," he said.

Yoo was also full of praise for Seo, saying the actress had demonstrated her abilities well before she gained fame through her role in the recent hit series "Oh Hae-young Again."

On Yoo Yeon-seok, the director said he expects the actor to carve out a fresh image for himself through his new role that suits him like a "perfect fit."

"Our drama may not be that hot or trendy, but it's familiar," Yoo said. People from all walks of life enter the hospital, from an exhausted taxi driver to a person run over by a cultivator and someone who has just tried to commit suicide.

"I think it'll be a drama that talks about humanism," the director said. "It's a story that embraces the agonies of all generations of people working and living in this world."

Cooking show finds breakthrough with Eric
Three Meals a Day's population soars with newly cast members

"Three Meals a Day," a popular reality cooking show directed by producer Na Young-seok, returned with its sixth season set in a fishing village, last Friday on tvN.

Again, Na chose actor Lee Seo-jin as the main cast member of the show to lead the series as he has for the last three years. But the biggest question was whether the newly joined members Eric Mun of the boy band Shinhwa and actor Yoon Kyun-sang will harmonize well with Lee.

In the previous two seasons, Lee and singer Ok Taec-yeon of K-pop boy band 2PM showed great rapport and teamwork. The two seasons were set in rural areas in Jeongseon County, Gangwon Province, and Gochang County, North Jeolla Province, where they planted seeds and harvested crops to cook their own meals with limited kitchen utensils.

However, for the new fishing village episodes set on Deukryang Island in South Jeolla Province, Mun's unexpected cooking skills have grabbed audiences' attention and his expertise in fishing made him a perfect cast member. The series regained its popularity with the first episode's average viewership rating recording 12.6 percent, according to Nielson Korea. The finale of the series starring Lee in Jeongseon finished with the lowest average viewing rating of 9.6 percent.

The viewer ratings showed that it was the most-watched show by the age group ranging from teens to those in their 50s among the TV shows aired in the same time slot.

"Honestly, I don't expect much when a guy says he is good at cooking as Taec-yeon himself said he was a good cook, but he turned out not to be," said Lee during the press conference at Imperial Palace Hotel in Gangnam, southern Seoul, last Thursday. "But Eric is really good at cooking. He said he learned through cooking TV shows. I never thought one could really become a good cook by watching TV programs."

Na agreed that he did not expect to see such amazing cooking scenes in the latest season although he knew Eric was a sophisticated cook and fisherman. But the director hesitated in casting Eric, as the singer-turned-actor is a rather shy person and he finds himself uncomfortable with strangers. However, Na decided to put Eric in his show when he remembered the actor's appearance with Lee in the hit drama "Phoenix" in 2004.

"I remember Lee took care of me a lot when I joined the shooting of Phoenix 12 years ago," said Mun. "It was my second time acting and I took a leading role in a big drama series and I was under pressure. But Lee taught me many things and treated me to dinner often. I took the offer to join this show when I heard Lee is starring too."

This is the first entertainment show that Mun has joined without his band mates from Shinhwa.

In the first episode, he prepared potato sujebi, a soup with potato, for lunch. He also used meat from a crab he caught and cooked it in a soybean paste to make a crab doenjang stew.

Na said that he hopes to continue producing TV shows that portray scenes of metropolitan residents preparing meals in rural areas using only foods they grow themselves or fish from the sea.

"We can fix our meals easily in the city, but I wanted people to remember how difficult it is to prepare a proper meal in a slow life. The show does not contain any spectacular or dramatic scenes, but it has its own viewing points," said Na.

  7. the show really hit big time numbers... and I personally super loved it... and reading @PutriSalju thought on it as a first time watcher of the show at what are your guys first impression@Phi @joyue_1 @innasalvatore @nessanonejja

LSJ was pretty chill in this season, and I do think this version seems the easiest on the first day as compared to other version... this time around, I think Eric and YKS are pretty much prepared and informed of the show... thus the mat-hyung was less grumpy and bossy that he usually is.. Na PD got him dongsaengs that pretty much all he needs to live quite comfortably in this season, the food and the work....

  9. Shinhwa's Eric says Eun Ji Won influenced his decision to go on 'Three Meals a Day'

On October 13, Lee Seo Jin, Shinhwa's Eric, and Yoon Kyun Sang attended the press conference for the upcoming season of tvN's 'Three Meals a Day' in the fishing village!

Eric, who revealed that he'd been hesitant about appearing on the show at first due to his reserved personality, opened up about the factors that influenced his decision to join the cast in the end. He shared, "I've always liked '1 Night, 2 Days' and was envious when I saw Eun Ji Won (from Sechskies) on it. When you perform on stage as a singer or act in a production as an actor, it's all work. I thought it would be enjoyable to work in a great setting with great people like on '1N2D'. The envy I had toward that still lingered, which influenced my decision to go on the show."

Which Shinhwa member does Eric want to see visiting him and his crew during the show? Eric answered, "If one of the members were to come, I'd recommend Andy. He and I are similar, but he's not as reserved about meeting people as I am. He cooks well, he's neat, and he's crafty. If Andy comes, I feel like I won't have to do anything."

The newest season of 'Three Meals a Day' premieres October 14 at 9:15 PM KST!
