Sol Kyung-gu and Kim Hee-ae fight for power in The Whirlwind

by lovepark

RBR52P_2f.jpg

The success of K-dramas has drawn movie-exclusive actors to make their small-screen debuts, and the latest addition to the growing list is Sol Kyung-gu (The Boys, Kill Boksoon). Starring alongside Sol is Kim Hee-ae (Queenmaker), and I for one am excited to see these two powerhouses absolutely devour their roles in the upcoming Netflix political drama The Whirlwind.

The teaser opens on a stormy night, and the president of South Korea clutches his chest before crumpling to the floor. The camera then zooms in on Prime Minster Park Dong-ho (Sol Kyung-gu), and he says, “I assassinated the president.”

This sudden power vacuum tosses everyone into a battle against time, and for those who have already crossed the line, there exists no limits. Standing in opposition to the prime minister is the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Jung Soo-jin (Kim Hee-ae). She, of course, has her own entourage of supporters, and like all politicians vying for a seat at the top, she believes power is above morals.

With the president gone, Prime Minister Park lays out his ambitious plans: a week to gain control over the NIS, the Prosecutors’ Office, and the police; another week to dig into the president’s son; one more to catch his rival Jung Soo-jin; and finally, one last week “to toss all the garbage out of this world.” In just a month, he believes he can turn the country on its head, essentially becoming the titular “whirlwind” that will destroy everything in its path.

This momentous task won’t be easy, though, since powerful figures from conglomerates to the media will be jumping into the fray as well. The teaser also reveals quick peeks at its impressive supporting cast from Kim Mi-sook (Payback) to Park Geun-hyung (Beauty and Mr. Romantic), foreshadowing a dynamic match between one evil against another. “That day, the president’s heart stopped.” Or so the story goes, but for the protagonists of this particular tale, it’s only just the beginning.

Taking up the pen after seven years is writer Park Kyung-soo (Whisper, Punch) — doing what he does best — and in the director’s seat is PD Kim Yong-wan (If You Wish Upon Me). The Whirlwind drops on Netflix June 28 and is slated for twelve episodes.

The accompanying trailer begins with Park Dong Ho, who decides to cause a whirlwind after witnessing the corruption of those who once promised a fair and just world. Park Dong Ho, Jeong Soo Jin, and the president all entered politics together wanting to create a just society, but after entering the Blue House, the President and Jeong Soo Jin became corrupt, and Park Dong Ho now points his blade at his former comrades.

After the president is seen clutching his heart and collapsing, the trailer gives viewers a glimpse of the intense rivalry between Park Dong Ho, who cannot stand the corrupt world and wishes to destroy it, and Jeong Soo Jin, who will stop at nothing to stand in his way and seize power for her own ambition. Review: ‘The Whirlwind’ Commits The Worst Sin Any Show Can – It’s Boring

Published: June 28, 2024

The-Whirlwind-1-1024x576.jpg

With ridiculous leadership squabbles currently underway in both the U.S. and the U.K., two of Netflix’s most sizeable and vocal markets, the time seems right for a political drama that burns the deep-rooted corruption and bizarre pageantry of public office for fuel. Enter, then, The Whirlwind, a verbose K-Drama that never met a monologue it wouldn’t languish over for twelve long hours.

It doesn’t take much effort to imagine the world of The Whirlwind, in which politics is intimately tied to big business, since we’re already living in that world. But the topicality doesn’t help the show work better as a drama. Instead, it’s a largely dull and brutally overlong affair that is much too self-satisfied to qualify as a breezy binge.

Inside the Blue House, South Korean President Jang Il-jun (Kim Hong-fa) benefits from a cushty arrangement with the Daejin Group, a prestigious conglomerate, which is perhaps just as well since they own the hospital he’s rushed to when he suffers a cardiac arrest in his office.

Prime Minister Park Dong-ho (Sul Kyung-gu) has poisoned the president as part of a scheme to expose his corrupt dealings with Daejin and root out further rot in the Blue House by being promoted to Acting President in Il-jun’s absence. It’s a dark plot, but such is the way of things in politics, especially since Dong-ho is motivated by the death of his friend, assemblyman Seo Gi-tae, who was also investigating corruption.

But Dong-ho is opposed by Deputy Prime Minister Jung Soo-jin (Kim Hee-ae), who is willing to use every opportunity to thwart his efforts and use the President’s ill-health to further her expansive political ambitions.

All the pieces are here, then – crooked relationships, deeply immoral characters, conspiracies, double-dealing, and all the usual political shenanigans. Why, then, is it so boring?

This is hard to put a finger on since The Whirlwind comes from Park Kyung-su, a screenwriter of some renown. But it’s certainly the writing that’s at fault, since the performances – especially the leads, with Hee-ae returning to the shrewd girl-boss archetype almost immediately after Queenmaker) are pretty stellar throughout.

But this is a show that operates with a surety in itself that ends up coming full circle and being off-putting. The monologues are hard to take seriously at times, ranging from dry to so overwrought that they’re laughable. We’re reminded again and again of the tricky moral underpinnings of governance and shown the ethical dilemmas that even well-intentioned statesmen are invariably faced with, but the po-faced seriousness of it all is just tough to engage with on any level beyond curiosity.

It doesn’t help that the characters are largely hemmed into their government postings rather than being possessed of any real depth. Key background details and character quirks are omitted in favor of pushing the plot forward and building faux-tension from various arbitrary ticking-clock devices.

It seems weird to criticize a serious political drama for not being fun enough, but The Whirlwind is like that. Its humourlessness is just dry, with too-familiar genre mechanics and an ambition to be resonant and meaningful that mostly serves to highlight how much less enjoyable it is than similar dramas that take themselves a bit less seriously.

Politics will always be interesting, especially in a period of flux like so many of us are in now, but TV still has to work as entertainment, and The Whirlwind unfortunately doesn’t.

‘The Whirlwind’ review: underbaked political drama tries too hard to impress

Netflix’s new Korean series takes itself too seriously to be authentic or convincing

You’ve fallen into quicksand, but don’t you dare try and reach out for help. Whoever grabs your hand will be dragged down with you,” South Korean President Jang Il-jun (played by Kim Hong-fa) tells Prime Minister Park Dong-ho (played by Sul Kyung-gu) sinisterly as he grips Park’s arm. “You can scream all you want, but it won’t matter. Everyone in your camp will suffer. This is the end for you and I.” But little does the president know, he would soon go into cardiac arrest and collapse in his own office.

The Prime Minister has been a passive whistleblower in the world of The Whirlwind, quietly investigating the president’s illicit activities and corrupt dealings with Daejin Group, South Korea’s most prestigious and cunning conglomerate. Though, there’s little Dong-ho can do mid the quicksand that is politics, slowly getting swallowed up by the growing depravity of those who South Koreans look to for leadership.

But when assemblyman and close personal friend Seo Gi-tae is killed amid his probe into the Blue House’s illicit ties with the rich, he finally decides to take matters into his own hands and see through Gi-tae’s unfinished work. To achieve his goals, he goes down a dark road, poisoning the president in an attempt to kill him (although he would later find out was not entirely successful). That would make him the Acting President, during which he will be granted enough immunity to cleanse the Blue House of its immoralities.

The deep-seated corruption in The Blue House isn’t willing to go down without a fight, and that manifests in the form of Deputy Prime Minister Jung Soo-jin (Kim Hee-ae), a shrewd, egotistical woman who is not above getting her hands dirty. As President Jang lapses into a coma, a power struggle between Dong-ho and Soo-jin quickly emerges as they each try to use the President’s incapacitation to further their own goals.

On paper, The Whirlwind has a lot going for it. The K-drama is the first project for esteemed screenwriter Park Kyung-su (2017’s Whisper, 2013’s Empire of Gold) in seven years’s first project in seven years. The show is also led by two acclaimed actors, Sul Kyung-gu in his first-ever television role and Kim Hee-ae, who led last year’s majestically Machiavellian political drama Queenmaker. So, what could go wrong?

Unfortunately, this Netflix K-drama is not Park’s best work. For the most part, The Whirlwind tries too hard to impress with intellectual language and overwrought monologues. Working off the age-old question of ‘what defines the line between good and evil’, it attempts to reflect on how far government corruption can go and the ethical dilemmas both leads find themselves in, but the overly dramatic series takes itself too seriously for it to come off as authentic or convincing.

Park Dong-ho does his best to present his character’s morally questionable actions as utilitarian, but the character’s inherent stoicness keeps the audience at arm’s length. Kim Hee-ae, on the other hand, offers a brilliant interpretation of Soo-jin’s unyielding brutality and ambition, even if the script fails to provide her character with more substance than just a Deputy Prime Minister on a power trip.

Political dramas are hardly new in the K-drama space (or on television in general), but many still struggle to go beyond the melodramatics. While The Whirlwind strives to be more philosophical and highbrow than most, it falls disappointingly short of its goals. If anything, the series is still a thrilling watch with twists that promise to keep viewers on the edge of their seat – but does little beyond that.
