[need tutorial] Is there easy/free program that can do "cuts" of program

Hi,

I'm looking for easy program and step-by-step tutorial that I can do "cuts" of only the parts I want.

In another word, if I have downloaded variety show and I only want to keep certain parts of it (cuts) to save on my hard drive as .avi file, is there easy program that I can use and with step-by-step tutorial, hopefully with screen caps?
